She was famous as both artist and model, infamous as political revolutionary and social libertine, and Frida Kahlo's controversial life couldn't help but seem the stuff of great musical theater. Her story is brought to the screen by director Julie Taymor, whose musical compatriot here is also her husband; Elliot Goldenthal, student of both Copland and Corigliani, shrewdly sublimates his modernism in service of the rich, evocative music and songs of Mexico and Central America. Utilizing performers that range from the contemporary (Lila Downs) to the folk-classic (Costa Rican legend Chavela Vargas; Brazilian star Caetano Veloso) and traditional (Los Cojolites, El Poder Del Norte, Trio Huasteca, Caimanes de Tanquin, and others), Goldenthal generously displays the true breadth of Mexican folk music, while seamlessly infusing it with the minimalist corners of his own underscore and some winning songwriting of his own. The result is one of 2002's most compelling soundtracks. The enhanced CD features include musical film excerpts, as well as a video conversation between Goldenthal and star Salma Hayek and text interviews with the composer and director Taymor. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars It's good.......2007-07-22

But I don't think it's all it's hyped up to be on the other reviews, but, I do like it to the point of keeping it. It's the perfect 4star rating.

5 out of 5 stars Revolutionary times.......2007-05-14

I absolutely love this soundtrack! Everytime I listen to it, I feel as though I am in Mexico during the revolution and Frida's life. Everyone should choose their own life soundtrack and this one allows us to see into Frida's life more clearly.

4 out of 5 stars Black Dove.......2007-05-13

Fell into the movie trying to avoid study and hang out with a jilted housemate. If I'm honest, Salma Hayek was the main draw. Wafer thin.
However, I was enraptured by the story of Frida and the amazing performance (no wonder she was oscar nominated).
I bought the soundtrack the next morning. It really got to me.This is a great soundtrack and, yes, it does help if you have seen the movie but not necessary. I loved the latin passion (highs and lows). Chervala Vargas as Elliot Goldenthal describes in the slieve was once Frida's lover. I loved her Paloma Negra. So powerful.
There is something for everyone in this long soundtrack.
Do as i have: watch the movie and buy the soundtrack. Worth the time and money.

5 out of 5 stars makes me want to dance .......2007-05-07

I really enjoyed the CD, the musical selection is great and it seems very authentic.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoy!.......2006-12-30

I purchased this CD after seeing the movie. The music is enjoyable to listen to and passionate as I would think Frida was. I purchased this CD a second time to give to a female Hispanic artist who identifies with the trials and tribulations of Frida. This artist now paints while listening to this CD. Her artwork not only has improved but has become popular. I defiantly recommend its purchase.

This collection includes Ernesto Lecuona's complete 1954 recordings plus a series of 78s made in 1927-28. Ten of the recordings were previously unreleased. This is a lot of lightweight Cuban piano music to deal with at once, but it's definitely worth doing. Lecuona's music, which is having a major revival, may not be important. But it's consistently charming and entertaining. The 78s, which sound surprisingly good, reveal even more of a virtuoso than do the later recordings, but throughout we hear playing that expresses the spirit of the music extremely well. And yes, the famous Malagueña is here, sounding very sexy. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars Lecuona Plays Lecuona.......2007-05-12

Oh Boy! What can I tell you about this magnificent collection of musical jewels from our Maestro Lecuona. I bought the original Long Playing Record back in the 50's in my country.
I purchased it again shortly after my arrival to the US, and I was lucky enough to buy it on DVD from Amazon, once I found out they had it.

5 out of 5 stars Lecuona the Cuban pianist is Great!.......2005-08-17

In my opinion this is one of the best CD's from Lacuona, Most of his piano compositions are recorded here (original ones), What, Ms. Leslie Gerber forgot to mention is that Mr.Lecuona was a band leader,"Lecuona and the Cuban Boys", remembers him? Or maybe she does not have sufficient information about him. The music from Lecuona still is very well alive today. I came across his recordings on my own, no one ever told me about this great pianist. I happened to hear the Malague?a by another great Cuban composer and band leader Perez Prado (The Real Mambo King) in one of his albums and Lecuona was the author. That got me interested in him. I'm pretty sure that Ms.Leslie Gerber does not mean any harm trying to put this composer down. It's just that maybe all she knows is Gerber baby food stuff!

4 out of 5 stars The Cuban Chopin.......2004-06-18

What a great album and great value. There is music here that will make you smile, break your heart, inspire you, and Lecuona's skill is breathtaking. If you enjoy classical piano music (with a Cuban/Spanish influence), you'll love this. No, it doesn't display the virtuosity, complexity or seriousness of Lizst, Chopin or Beethoven, but it's fun, beautiful, dramatic yet accessible. You'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars Lecuona, the musical genious . . . . ........2002-10-16

I feel compelled to identify myself first. I am Cuban born who arrived in the US in 1960 at the age of 16 years old. I am a US citizen since 1965 and a US Army Veteran of Viet Nam. I will die defending the right Ms. Leslie Garber has of expresing her opinions. But what I will not condone is her ignorance. To say that Lecuona writes "lightweight Cuban piano music" and that "Lecuona's music may not be important" is to show ignorance. A musician that composes GREAT music in several genres of the music world, a musician that in all genres has highly succesful pieces, and, a musician that after many years, (70-80 years) is still heard and admired can not be called other than MUSICAL GENIOUS and a CLASSICAL MUSICIAN. His music is so beautiful that it will live forever. From his Afro-Cuban compositions, to his romantic popular boleros, to his valses, to his Zarzuelas, Lecuona demonstrates once and again, time after time his immense musical talent. His Afro-Cuban "Cafetal", his romantic boleros "Noche Azul" and "Amapola", His vibrant and colorful "Comparsa" and "Andalucia", his classical Valses, just to mention a few things, makes Lecuona to stand together with the great musicians of the world. The fact that Hollywood made a film around "Estas en mi corazon" and that great singers, like Placido Domingo, want to sing Lecuona's music speaks immensely well of Lecuona/s greatness. The fact the popular instrumental orchestras like Faith, Conniff, Mantovani, Cugat have arranged and interpreted a lot of Lecuona's music also says a lot about Lecuona's versatility in his work. Lecuona is probably important to many millions of people and his music is certainly not lightweight. And if the only thing Ms. Garber can say about "Malaguena" is that "it sounds very sexy" is to demonstrate that she does not know a thing about music. It definitely does not give her the priviledge of commenting about Lecuona's music.

5 out of 5 stars LECUONA IS NO LIGHTWEIGHT.......2002-02-27

Lecuona is one of the most important composers of Latin-America. He is by no means the "unimportant" and "lightweight" Leslie Gerber (whomever that may be) claims, having been hailed for performances of his earlier (and "less mature") works by the likes of Maurice Ravel.

In my opinion the highlight of the set is the devilish "La 32". It's also interesting to compare his interpretations of the same works at different times in his career, like the two recordings of "Por que te vas?" and "Amorosa", especially keeping in mind that Lecuona seldom notated and improvised quite frequently, leaving the transcription work to his students.

5 out of 5 stars Latin Pop Music At Its Best.......2006-07-15

The first time when I listened to this song,I was absolutely encharmed and mystified. Believe you me,I couldn't comprehend a single word of this song. But it appealed to me in the sense of its music, tone and melody. As I listened to it again and again,I actually could murmur certain fractions of the song(though without still understanding the meaning)and became an instant fan of this superbly talented and charismatic Colombian singer Juanes. The convincing rhythm with the pleasant assurance of its melody seeped into my soul. I do understand a few lines now though and that has embellished my attraction towards the brilliant, briiliant song.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone should have this in their music collection.......2005-05-08

I've never heard any unsolicited information about these guys. I saw them on Letterman one night and thought they rocked and started pokin' around the net.

Though I like they're rockin' songs (esp. Way Out West & White Girls), it's the singers syrupy voice and back guitar of the slow songs that are like a drug.

I'm tellin' you, if you're in a mellow altered mood, program songs 5,6,7,9, and 12, and you'll see why 5*****.

5 out of 5 stars Patience is virtue.......2004-06-18

I bought this record the day it came out. I played it a few times and was unimpressed. 6 months passed and I decided to revolve the disc a few more times. Voila! I got it! I have since listened to it about a thousand more times. I can't get over how great this band is and how little exposure they've received.
Too bad a lot of people are missing out on this... and too bad they probably won't be putting out any more records. Get it, spin it, spin it again - be patient.

2 out of 5 stars GENERIC ROCK.......2004-06-08

Hard rock? Alt-country? Indie? It's hard to tell but this sounds to me like an ordinary promo debut rock act. The guitars seem particularly unexceptional, 80s hair maybe with few creative ideas and the vocals/lyrics invoke bold cliches (why not another numbered nervous breakdown?) and mention Jesus Christ so many times I'm beginning to suspect this is Christian rock disguised as cool.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite CD (so far) for 2003...........2003-09-01

Verbena's "La Musica Negra" is a breathe of fresh air, an almost perfect rock album released at a time when rock music really doesn't get made much anymore (not enough room for it amongst all the watered down punk and rap, kiddie porn songstresses, pretty boy bands, manufactured teen angst, and other corporate music monstrosities..).

This band deserves a better fate than it will probably get. I will do my best to get people to hear this, and then insist that THEY BUY THEIR OWN COPY. It makes me sick to see these CD's already going for ($)... (Yeah, what a bargain, but has anyone noticed that music really sucks these days since great artists like this don't get rewarded anymore).....
(And as a sidenote, I just realized that the title of the fourth song, "It's Allright, It's OK, Jesus Told Me So", is probably in reference to a line from a film made in 1999 entitled "American Movie").

5 out of 5 stars Verbena is amazing.......2003-08-25

After falling in love with verbena's into the pink cd upon first
listen I decided that I had to own this and ordered it as soon
as it was available. While the music is a little surprising to
into the pink fans because it is certainly not as raw, it is
just as amazing. With the departure of Anne Marie I find myself
missing some of the lovely harmonizing, although some does appear.
Just as into the pink before it, I find myself reaching for this
cd again and again. I believe it has been an awfully long time
since I heard a band a fresh as this one. Their talent is
amazing, their music incredible and they are just getting
better with time. This is a must have cd.

The inspired moods in which Morton Gould and his orchestra were inmersed when this recording was made was simply anthologic . Gould literally caught the perfect balance and the idomatism of Ernesto Lecuona , a cuban composer and author of Malagueña An emblematic song played for artists of the high of Paco de Lucia , Carlos Montoya , Jose Feliciano and the most famous orchestras of the world as Paul Mauriat ,or Frank Purcel .
This CD provides you a selection of well known and unknown pieces of that talented musician . It is a magnificent opportunity to know the high lyricism and latin flavour of Ernesto Lecuona .
Bravo for Morton Gould!

5 out of 5 stars Appeals to students who don't even like classical music.......2004-04-23

This is a great collection of classical music enjoyed by all types of music lovers. A good introduction to classical music for students who have never been fans of classical music. I highly recommend it for everyone.

4 out of 5 stars This material is worth more than a casual listen.......2001-01-09

In the 50's and 60's one of the biggest artists on RCA Red Seal was Morton Gould and his Orchestra. Recording staples like Grand Canyon and Billy the Kid kept the record company in the spotlight, but occasionally the conductor was able to do what he wanted. These were produced as Jungle Drums in 1955 and More Jungle Drums in 1964 Gould wrote the transcriptions of these piano pieces for these releases. RCA has digitalized the originals and presented them here as a set. The recording quality is first rate and packaging with information on the composer is welcome. This is a wonderful CD to experiment with to discover composers that are not in the mainstream. Well worth the discounted price here too.

I'm working on the Andulcia suite, and just got this CD in the mail today to see how the songs are supposed to sound, and am blown away at Tirino's ability to play Lecuona and sound like him too!

This CD is a joy to listen to, Tirino's clarity, playing the greatest piano literature available is the most fun I've had in a while listening to a CD.

Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars A GREATE WAY TO BRING LECUONA BACK.......2001-09-11

Thank you Mr. Tirino for bringing this marvellous music back.
It is a wonderful job very well done.
This is the best recording of this pieces ever.Mr. Tirino has the perfect balance to play this music exactly the way Lecuona wrote it. Outstanding

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT LECUONA-INCOMPARABLE.......2000-07-28

THIS IS IT! The Lecuona recording that began the whole new renaissance of the great Maestro's music 7 years ago. TIME magazine hailed this as one of the ten best recordings of the year from ALL musical categories, "Fingers ablaze"!

These performances are incisive, colorful, stylistically very much LECUONA, (with even Lecuona's subtle changes in the scores included in these recordings), researched to a fault, executed with such breadth and depth of interpretation, color and old Cuban style. It is my humble opinion, as a Cuban, that no one can even come near to these performances...from begining to end it is absolute, utter perfection. This is a must in your collection, and the standard to which all other Lecuona recordings should be measured and compared. Tirino is THE Lecuona authority in the world.

I hope I have the oppourtunity some day to meet this great artist, shake his hand, and thank him wholeheartedly on behalf of all us Cubans everywhere for his work in bringing back Lecuona's music in such a masterly way. Thank you, and BRAVO, Maestro TIRINO!

On The Latin Album, they tackle a repertoire that includes big-band favorites and compositions from Piazzolla, Perez Prado, and Aaron Copland (in the form of El Salon México). These are mostly dance tunes, filled with crashing percussion, Latin rhythms, and familiar melodies. To their credit, the Boston Pops get this fiesta right about half the time--opening with Alberto Ginastera's "Malambo," they set a furious, rollicking mood that's heavy on the percussion. They shine on Jacob Gade's "Jalousie" (an early hit for Lockhart predecessor Arthur Fiedler) and on the more atmospheric "Mi Cambio" by César Villalobos. Unfortunately, their arrangement of Piazzolla's "Oblivion" is about as subtle as the music found in soap operas (and about as exciting) and "Perfidia" is a disappointment, "smooth" but hardly sultry. Still, the Pops know how to play their brassy, rhythmic showpieces, and the recorded sound here is excellent. --Jason Verlinde

3 out of 5 stars Good background music, but a little tame for latin.......2002-08-19

I expected a little more action. I tend to think of mariachi and I got village pan pipes.

2 out of 5 stars Don't Bother!.......2002-04-15

I bought this CD at a stoop sale for one dollar, and then sold it at a stoop sale for a dollar or two. I am very glad that I did not pay full price (or even half price) for it. I did not think it was a bad CD, but a bland CD. Every track on it I have heard performed better elsewhere. They are like Muzak versions of great Latin works.

4 out of 5 stars A mood-lifter!.......2001-03-29

Keith Lockhart, the Boston Pops, and the guest artists have a hit in this one! I can almost forget the snow outside when I listen to it. I loved "Jalousie!" And Mariachi Cobre stands out on "Granada" and "Son de la Negra." Five star tracks, both of them, with Steve Carrillo's great vocal work on "Granada" and the spirited interchange between the Pops and Mariachi Cobre's brass sections in "Son de la Negra." Purists may object to the combination of Latin music and an orchestra, but I think it's a treat!

5 out of 5 stars A great CD from the Pops.......2001-02-07

The Boston Pops due a great job on this CD. I really like Batuque. If you are looking for a great CD that will really make you dance this is the one.

3 out of 5 stars I agree with the music fan from Mexico.......2001-01-03
