This sounds more like an anthology of Mexican orchestral music than the work of one composer. Sensemayá is the best-known music here, and it fulfills our expectation of Revueltas as a kind of Mexican Stravinsky, with a folk-influenced base supporting tangy dissonances and exciting rhythms. Some of the music in the two other scores is similarly adventurous, while other sections are almost pops-concert material. The Night of the Mayas is film music, uncommonly interesting for such work. The Girl Colonel is an unfinished ballet, completed by two other Mexican composers with sections from other Revueltas film scores. It's all thoroughly involving and worthwhile music, well played by an obscure, recently formed (1989) Mexican orchestra and vividly recorded. Because of its mix of well-known and uncommon music, the disc serves equally well as an introduction to Revueltas and as a delight to those who already love his music. It's also an even better bargain than the Naxos disc. --Leslie Gerber

Este CD reúne dos de las tres obras mayores de Revueltas: Sensemayá y La noche de los Mayas (solo falta la obra maestra absoluta del compositor: Homenaje a Federico García Lorca). Como feliz complemento, el ballet La coronela, que Revueltas dejó inconcluso a su muerte en 1940. Las realizaciones son de primer nivel. La Orquesta Sinfónica de Aguascalientes y su director, Enrique Barrios, sobresalen en La noche de los Mayas y en La Coronela, y ofrecen una versión del clásico Sensemayá que no desmerece frente a las mejores referencias: Bernstein (SONY), Mata (RCA), Salonen (SONY), en orden de preferencia personal, todas disponibles en Amazon. La grabación es impecable. Muy recomendable

I concur with the previous 5-star review. Three years ago there was little hope that these works would receive a hearing and now we have one, WHAT a hearing. A must for any fan of Latin American music and especially Silvestre Revueltas.

Brilliant Recording.......1998-11-18

I was quite surprised at this wonderful recording. As a big fan of Revueltas' work, I was excited that another major work was released. The production and selection of material for the disk was done very well, but what surprised me was brilliant musicianship from this ensemble (Santa Barbara) that made for a truly enjoyable disk. This has to rank as one of the finest interpretations of a Revueltas work in recent memory. Great interpretation and conducting by Ben-Dor!
