In those thirties this ensemble spouted as the final result of a collective. In a similar way, you may establish related connections Hungary - Bartok , Rumania - Enesco, England-Elgar, Norway - Sibelius.
Lecuona Cuban boys sung from the bottom of their souls and hearts, the joys and sorrows of a people: Rumba blanca tells about reminiscences of the land they will never see. They represented possibly the most genuine representation of the real feeling , old traditions. But the true backstage is an enormous grief, behind the contagious rhythm and easy to follow single but expressive letters. I this sense their legacy will endure far beyond the years.

Originating in Cuba in the early 1930s, the Lecuona Cuban Boys "conquered" Europe between the years 1934 and 1939. They are credited with having introduced the dance the conga to the world. Their many records, made over a period of forty years and often keenly sought by collectors, have been transferred to CD by Harlequin Records of England. To date eight CDs have been issued in the series. Volume One offers recordings made during the 1930s, including two of the best - "Rumbah-Tambah", and "La Conga Blicoti". Eminent Cuban pianist and composer Ernesto Lecuona happily allowed his name to be bestowed on the group, he composed for them, he promoted them, and he was at the heart of the good spirits that kept them together, but he never featured as the group's pianist. The personnel numbered about twelve, most of whom played several instruments, and some of whom composed and arranged for the group. Each member also had a non-musical role to play, one in charge of the travel, another publicity, another finances, and so on. Their regular vocalist from 1934 was Alberto Rabagliati, an Italian. The notes provided in Volume One and subsequent volumes are enriched by recollections gathered from two of the groups original members. Listening to the Lecuona Cuban Boys, it is the exotic array of percussion instruments that makes a first strong impression - claves, guior, bongoes, timbales, quijada, maracas, gangarria. Whatever the music, even if it is the Russian folksong "Black Eyes", these instruments get into the act. High spirits are evident too. Band members cheer each other on, laugh, and generally sound as if they are having the time of their lives. The enjoyment is irresistible.

Harlelquin has made a great compilation.......1998-09-11

I have heard all eight volumes of the Lecuona Cuban Boys series and think that the job made by Harlequin Records in England is the most fantastic compilation. Even though I am only 35 years old, I have heard this music ever since I can remember. My parents were so lucky to see them in the stage and dance at their live performances in Lima, Peru, during the South America tour. I have look for this records for years and finally found this incredible treasure. I,d like to meet other people with the same interest. I haighly recomend all the albums of the Harlequin series, and of course look forward for the release of Volume 9. Hopefully some more of the South American recordings will be on it. I have a question for those who share this passion... Is Armando Orefiche still alive? I wish I could some day meet the "maestro" and shake his hand.

Astonishing stuff, really! Lecuona's Cuban Boys was one of the best and the most popular Cuban bands of the 30s, having lots of dance hits in America and Europe -especially in France. Although the great Cuban composer and pianist Ernesto Lecuona was not in fact a regular member of the band, Cuban Boys represented the unique artistic spirit of their mentor: Colourful melodies, full of "tropical" rhuthmic styles (rumba, conga etc.)and powerful vocals. (In this, extremely beautiful collection you can hear the Italian singer Alberto Rabagliati and even Miss Josephine Baker singing with the band). Among the first-class recordings of some of Lecuona's asterpieces of that era, like "Tabou" (the ultimate version), "Maria La O", "Siboney", "Amapola" etc, this CD also offers extraordinary versions of the traditional mexican song "Amapola" -a major international hit before and after the World War II- and the russian tune "Ojos negros" ("Dark eyes"). I'm sure you'll enjoy this collection. The feeling is timeless, the songs superb, the 78rpm recordings eternally delightful. Cuba-mania has never been as "juicy" as then: Right before the War, when the legendary Lecuona's Cuban Boys spread the originality of Cuban rhythmology all over the world.
