So much more than mindless muzak!! Xavier, I yi yi yi yi I like you very much !!!.......2007-05-07
The CD opens with the classic number "The Lady In Red;" the band makes great use of the percussion, horns and piano as it often did in Cugat's Orchestra. Don Reid & Chorus do a great job with the vocals, too. "The Lady In Red" is chock full of energy and whets your appetite for more. "Jalousie (Jealousy)" follows; this tango opens with a dramatic flourish by the horns and harp and "Jalousie (Jealousy)" generates a whopping amount of energy, too. You'll want to dance to this number for sure!
Other great numbers by Cugat and his Orchestra include the classic "Cielito Lindo" with a particularly upbeat, faster than usual beat and vocals by Chacha Aguilar and Carmen Castillo. Awesome! "La Paloma (The Dove)" also shines as the orchestra plays this so well. "Perfidia (Tonight)" scores another coup for Xavier Cugat and his Orchestra, too.
But there's more. This CD features Dinah Shore with some of her earliest recordings; she sings along with the orchestra as they play the bolero tune "Yours (Quiéreme Mucho);" "La Cumparsita;" "Jungle Drums" and "The Breeze And I." Great! Dinah's voice is in excellent form on these numbers.
Bing Crosby also lends his talent on several tracks including "Siboney" and the wonderful "Baía" which is a slow, romantic samba.
The CD ends with "South America, Take It Away;" I believe that Bing Crosby is featured on this track even though he is not credited as doing the vocals. The chorus does a great job, too. The song has a big band flavor that was so popular in the 1940s.
The liner notes give you an essay about Cugat and his Orchestra by Peter Dempsey; and the songs credits are there, too. The art work is very good.
The quality of the sound is very good considering the age of these recordings. These are the original mono recordings, so please keep in mind that there will be some surface noise but it won't detract from the quality of the sound too much.
Overall, I highly recommend this for fans of Latin music from the 1930s and 1940s; and Cugat fans will consider this CD to be a "must-have" for their collections. The music is romantic and it also provides us with hours upon hours of easy listening music enjoyment.

Xavier Cugat--a classic film favorite!.......2000-08-18
I recommend this CD, it's one of my favorites. It is also good for ballroom dancing (vintage rhumba, tango, mambo, samba) since Xavier Cugat played mainly for dancers and uses even tempos.

Album Description
Scoop is the new contemporary comedy from writer/director Woody Allen who stars in the film with Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson and Ian McShane. Scoop is the second consecutive picture that the filmmaker has set and shot in London (following Match Point). The soundtrack for Scoop includes several classical tracks hand-picked by Woody Allen.Woody Allen reports that he chose the music based on "his instincts about what would work in the film."Capturing the playful spirit of the film, the soundtrack's lush orchestrations and quick tempo complement the mysterious motif of the story. The soundtrack consists almost entirely of beautiful classical music by Tchaikovsky, Grieg and Johann Strauss -- a unique assemblage for any soundtrack, especially one from a movie not entirely about classical music itself. These timeless melodies from The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, and Peer Gynt will be recognized with pleasure by every listener.
Scoop tells the story of Sondra Pransky (Scarlett Johansson), a student journalist for a college paper visiting friends in London who happens upon the scoop of a lifetime. Along the investigative trail, she finds magic, murder, mystery -- and perhaps love, with British aristocrat Peter Lyman (Hugh Jackman).

Review by William Cuddy - age 9.......2006-12-19
Scoop has comedy in almost every corner, a plot that seems elaborate but is simple for its viewers. I understand why all who watch it seem to get the giggles. It's an amazing film, but then again most of Woody Allen's films are funny and clever. Scoop mixes the suspense of his earlier movie, Match Point, with the current comedy of Scoop. The reality beats that of Casino Royale by far. Scoop's one-liners and physical comedy make it one of his funnier films. Some reviewers of his previous film, Match Point (such as Stylus Magazine), have given Scoop a bad review because they think it is too similar. This is not true, as Scoop follows quite a different story - for example, the appearance of Ghosts. It inflicts no damage on Allen's career. Now, onto the movie itself.
We start off with the death of the celebrity journalist, Joe Strombel, a reporter who is the foundation of the movie, and is the main cause of its beginning and end. We cut to a scene of Joe Strombel, and a group of people on a mangy boat. When we cut to the boat piloted by Death, it seems Strombel has been there almost an hour, and he has met a secretary. This secretary hands the scoop to Joe Strombel, and Strombel jumps off the boat to return to earth as a ghost. Earlier, Sondra Pransky, a journalist in training, had made off with a Film Director, and had now gone to see a Magician called Splendido (Sid in cast, and Woody Allen in life). She is picked to be put in a disappearing box (the kind that makes you disappear), and through that, she meets the deceased Strombel. Strombel tells her he had a giant scoop on his hands, saying that the mysterious Tarot card killer was Peter Limen, Lord Limen's son. But then Strombel mysteriously disappears, and when Sid, (Splendido) opens the box, Sondra had also disappeared; I believe this was a by-product of Strombel's disappearance. Sondra Pransky then drags Sid out to look at Peter Limen, the person who was supposed by Strombel to be the killer. She pretends to drown, and by then has, at that moment, won over his heart. I shall not spoil any more of the movie, for the sake of the pre-viewers. I give the film of which I have reviewed a great big comedic 9/10. I say, a Jolly Good film.
Another Comedic Masterpiece - Thank You Woodie Allen!.......2006-12-12
By now, most of us who have seen more than one Woody Allen movie, are familiar with his usual themes: Jungian symbolism, human frailty, love, and above all else, life's rich pageant of absurdity. I could see how to some, this could be an old, tired formula, but I don't agree at all. In the hands of the genius who created it, it is still fresh, interesting, and relevant. With a brilliant cast starring Woody Allen, the smart and sexy Scarlet Johansen and the suave, debonair and deranged, Hugh Jackman, this movie is a winning formula.
Just as Bob Dylan's music has returned to the simplicity of its origins, so has Woody Allen come full circle. Like Dylan, this is not to lean on something tried and true, but to come back and perfect it. This movie is highly entertaining and extremely funny. So, stick some popcorn in the microwave and prepare to be thoroughly entertained.

Musical Excellence.......2005-09-26
If you like the Buena Vista Social Club, these mambos will absolutely drive you crazy. The rumbas recall extravagant Hollywood dance numbers of the war years and are equally indelible. Duerme, Begin the Beguine, Para Vigo Me Voy, Acercate Mas, and more, feature excellent vocals. You may think Xavier Cugat old and dead, that his tunes were just schmaltz, but try these out on your player and see what made his name a household word.

On an island with Cugat's CD.......2003-12-03
If I were to spend the rest of my life on a desert island with only one Latin CD, this is the one I'd choose. I believe Xavier Cugat's best recordings were made on RCA Victor between 1937 and, especially, 1940 ("Cuban Love Song"; "Bim Bam Boom" on Harlequin). After switching to Columbia in 1941, the orchestrations got more sophisticated, creating that inimitable Cugat sound unrivalled by any other Latin orchestra. However, on several recordings, Columbia's producers probably asked Cugat to leave his rhythm section at the Waldorf because they preferred subdued percussion. It wasn't until the late forties that the beat began to pick up again ("Jack, Jack, Jack" on Harlequin).
In the latter half of the fifties, Cugat recorded three outstanding albums for Columbia: "Merengue by Cugat", "Bread, Love and Cha Cha Cha" and "Cugat Cavalcade". The latter two are on this CD representing the sweet and the sizzling. On "Cavalcade" the lush strings provide enchanting arrangements of evergreen Latin standards. On "Bread, Love..." the blistering brass explodes all the way backed by percolating percussion. Never had Cugat swung harder. Even so, the music is not devoid of depth and emotion. A case in point: "The Banana Boat Song", ably sung by Pepito Arvelo (the featured vocalist on this album) in a plaintive vein redolent of the banana picker's toil and hard life (as opposed to Harry Belafonte's gimmicky interpretation which became a hit anyway). Arvelo's soulful rendition of "Suavecito" is another high point. "Maria La O", states the theme on the French horn, an appropriate instrument for "Maria of the Winds". And dig La Paloma's unusual arrangement which segues into a rousing guaracha beat in the latter half; or "Coco Seco" (Dry Coconut) where the coconut dried up probably because of the fiery orchestrations! I agree with Rob Lee that ALL the selections are great.
So give me my island and this CD and I'll be muy contento.
ANOTHER FANTASTIC CD FROM CUGAT.......2003-01-05
