There have always been two camps in the zydeco world of South Louisiana. The "song" camp takes its cue from Clifton Chenier, who used his big piano accordion and broad harmonic palette to develop distinct songs. The "riff" camp draws its lessons from Boozoo Chavis, who uses his small button accordion and hypnotic two-bar themes to create hypnotic dance rhythms. The differences are analogous to those between, say, T-Bone Walker and Muddy Waters, or Sam Cooke and James Brown. The "riff" school has dominated the Gulf Coast dance halls in recent years, but the "song" school still thrives in the music of C.J. Chenier (Clifton's son) and Nathan Williams. This album from Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Chas, I'm a Zydeco Hog, includes two Clifton Chenier compositions and 11 Williams originals in the same style and with the same high standards.

The album was recorded live at the Rock'n'Bowl, a second-floor bowling alley above a giant Thrift City in the Mid-City section of New Orleans. The bowling goes on while Louisiana's best bands play at one end of the broad walkway. Usually it's so quiet you can hear a pin drop. The combination of balls rolling down the lanes, musicians scraping rubboards and squeezing accordions, and dancers making the old wooden floors bend creates a dizzying atmosphere that is peculiarly Louisianan.

Producer Scott Billington has captured that fizzy excitement on this joyful recording, which is the best possible introduction to Williams's music. Two of the most infectious numbers, "Zydeco Hog" and "Everything on the Hog," are variations on Chenier's classic "I'm a Hog for You" and a reflection of the music's rural roots. Several songs are sung in the ancient Creole dialect, and several more are interrupted by Williams's shouts of encouragement to the dancers. When they respond in kind, the energy level of the music seems to rise another notch. --Geoffrey Himes

Nathan Williams and The Zydeco Cha Chas are probably one of Lousiana's most underated Zydeco performers. For more than a dozen years this act has been churning out high energy zydeco music laced with the blues, reggae, classic creole and just plain and simple rock 'n' roll. "I'm a Zydeco Hog" recorded live at New Orleans' Mid City Lanes "Rock'n'Bowl" in 1997 is one of the best live Zydeco recordings I've recently heard. The late Beau Jocque Live! was good. Keith Frank Live! is fine too. But Nathan and The Zydeco Cha Chas Live! is an experience. This CD captures all the excitement that was in the air during this exceptional "Rock'n'Bowl" performance. There are classic Zydeco sounds here too, including "Zydeco Hog", "Why You Wanna Make Poor Cha Cha Cry?", and the hard driving "El Sid O's Zydeco Boogaloo." Everytime Nathan Williams shouts "Etwal" (The stars are surely shining tonight) you know something special is about to happen. Close your eyes on this one and you're transported right onto the dance floor of the Mid City Lanes with all the excitement that is Nathan Live! Once you pick this one up, your gonna want more from this premier party band. So go ahead and explore two other Nathan CDs: "Steady Rock" and "Your Mama Don't Know." But first, "take your shoes off" and dance to the sounds of Nathan and The Zydeco Cha Chas Live at the "Rock'n'Bowl."

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The band's tight music is fun, spirited, infectious, & danceable.......2006-03-19

Playing Time - 43:55 -- Literally translated, zydeco means "green bean" (evolving from the French "haricot" or snapbean), but the term is used to denote the snappy, upbeat, syncopated dance music of Louisiana's black Creole residents. The evolution of zydeco has resulted in a multi-cultural gumbo, reflecting the background of southern Louisiana's French-speaking Creole population. Zydeco's roots in Cajun music are very apparent, but you'll also notice the influences of reggae, calypso, country, blues, Caribbean and rock. The soul music influence is best represented in Otis Redding's "Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa." The accordion is front and center, and Zydeco also has electric guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, and rubboard. With the support of the Rounder label, Nathan & the Zydeco Cha Chas have achieved national (and international) popularity along with such Zydeco artists as Boozoo Chavis, Rockin' Dopsie, Queen Ida, Buckwheat Zydeco, Terrance Simien, Sam Brothers, John Delafose, Canray Fontenot, and others.

Nathan Williams, Sr. mainly uses a piano accordion, but he's also credited for playing the triple-row accordion which would be a "single action" 31-button accordion which provides a different note on the push and pull of the bellows. Although not identified in the liner notes, the songs with the more unique stacatto sound would be the ones on which Nathan is using the button accordion. Although he grew up in a Creole-speaking home in St. Martinville, Nathan sings in English, and lyrics are included in the CD jacket. Many of the songs refer to their Zydeco music and "My Zydeco" says it best -- it'll "set your soul on fire, make you wanna move, make you wanna groove ... it's like white lightnin' y'all." The band is tight, and the music is fun, spirited, infectious, and danceable.... "like a hot toddy!" Guitarist Dennis Paul Williams is Nathan's brother. A famous painter, his art graces the album's cover and tray card Keyboardist Nathan Williams Jr. is studying music at the Univ. of South Louisiana, and he fronts his own band. Rubboard player Mark "Chuck" Williams is a cousin who has been with the band since day one. Bassist Robert LeBlanc has been a Zydeco Cha Cha for at least five years, and drummer Herman "Rat" Brown played with Buckwheat Zydeco for many years.

Compared to Cajun music, these guys seem to prefer faster tempos, more syncopated and heavy rhythms, simplified melodies, and more influence from R&B and soul music. Williams attributes King of Zydeco Clifton Chenier as a mjor influence. Nearly an hour long, this generous set underlines the band's ebullient, rocking style. Some songs (e.g. "Old Man's Darling" or "Your Love Lasts As Long As Your Money") could be perceived as being more rock or blues (with accordion) than Zydeco, but "Hang it High, Hang it Low" has plenty of energy nonetheless. "Do It Now" and the title cut come across to me as the better funky zydeco grooves. The band is very prolific with many releases during the last two decades. Definitely rock'em-sock'em original music, I guess I was hoping for a few more stylistic innovations in the genre from them. Some of the songs (and especially lyrics) come across as just a little too basic. The musical journey is still a bunch of fun, though. "I Was Born At Night (But Not Last Night)" indicates that these guys have been around, and they know the ropes. They'd also like you to come and boogie along. Let the good times roll! (Joe Ross, Roseburg, OR.)

5 out of 5 stars A Great Accordion Master and Zydeco Man " Take Your Shoes Off".......2006-08-17

Nathan Williams is one of the best zydeco artist in the world, but gets little recognition! If you were to see him live at "El Sid'os", his brothers club, you would see why. He is very polite and can make you move to the zydeco. All of his cds are great, but this cd is why they call him "Steady Rock", cause he rocks that zydeco!!! Every song is great on this cd, i like "Big Fat Mama", "Hey Bebe", "Walkin" The Floor" and especially "Everything on the Hog". Every song is kickin', so if you want some real zydeco, don't miss out on this one! Allon Zydeco!

Ever since Clifton Chenier generated his Creole sound of accordion-and-saxophone rhythm & blues, southwest Louisiana has been swamped with hard-working road warriors who have continued to modernize the sound and keep the roadhouses and bars of the bayous jumping. Accordionist Nathan Williams has become one of the hardest working of these musicians, and Let's Go! continues his path from zydeco to rock & roll. The band is down to one original Cha Cha (Mark Anthony Williams on the rub board), and the focus on electric guitar licks and a bass-and-drums rhythm section pushes the group farther to the center of the swamp-pop scene, but this is still rousing good-time music, with Williams's heartfelt vocals telling the great stories common to most pop music: wine, "little girls," busy or lonely Saturday nights, heartbreak, and hard work. No pretensions, just good-rockin' good times. --Louis Gibson

Nathan & The Zydeco Cha Chas have put out an album that keeps you on your feet dancing. The songs are top notch. The backing band behind the great accordian sounds from Nathan Williams are a perfect blend. This is the real deal if you want zydeco music. Get it!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Lets Go! Proves to Push Zydeco Further.......2000-02-23

On Lets Go!, singer/songwriter/accordionist Nathan Williams utilizes his contemporary Zydeco inventiveness by throwing hints of reggae, R&B, pop, and blues into the traditional Zydeco mix. Williams, a soulful baritone, progresses in this genre (once again) by throwing instantly infectious melodies at you while the rhythm section holds the groove down. You can here the bands diversity on cuts like "Everything Happens for the Best" (where hints of reggae come through) or "Hard Times" (Williams shows his natural vocal prowess with a down home blues moan). What becomes immediately apparent while listening through Lets Go! is that most of the tunes are instantly hummable and recognizable, yet they never tend to flounder after numerous listens. Nathan Williams may not be the most well known Zydeco artist, but his songwriting leaves him at the forefront amongst the seasoned vets.
