Guitarist John Abercrombie has been one of those ECM heritage artists over the years, helping the label define its cerebral and sometimes austere vision of creative jazz. Abercrombie's playing is clean, melodic, and subtle--he reaches beyond jazz to incorporate bits of classical, folk, blues, and rock. Here he's complemented by an amazing group--drummer Joey Baron, bassist Marc Johnson, and violinist Mark Feldman--for the third time. Though busy in a number of different contexts, the group members are wholly in sync with Abercrombie's vision, leaving plenty of space for the music to breath, prodding when it lingers, and generally adding elegant accompaniment throughout. The group is almost tango-like in its ability to build songs passionately through tasteful restraint. Of the ten tunes here, takes on Ornette Coleman's "Round Trip" and Bill Evans's "Epilogue" are telling signposts of influence, but this is a band that presses on, creating beautiful music that lives in the here and now. --Tad HendricksonAlbum Description
The Third Quartet is master guitarist John Abercrombie's 25th leader recording for ECM. This third album from his current quartet with Mark Feldman, Marc Johnson and Joey Baron is the strongest yet from this band, in its seventh year of playing together. The repertoire on the new recording includes eight new tunes from Abercrombie, plus two classics of new jazz - Bill Evans's "Epilogue," and Ornette Coleman's "Round Trip."John Abercrombie is one of the most influential guitarists in jazz history. His oeuvre on ECM not only includes his own discs, but also recordings with Charles Lloyd, Jan Garbarek, Kenny Wheeler, Jack DeJohnette and others. His band mates have also played some of the biggest names in jazz and music: Pharoah Sanders, John Zorn, Bill Frisell, Dave Douglas, Bill Evans and Johnny Cash. Each have an impressive ECM roster or recordings, including recent leader albums from Feldman and Johnson.

John Abercrombie just gets better.......2007-05-15
Cobham. I am not a guitarist. I can only say he has an incredible sense
of touch & dynamics. I recently had the pleasure of seeing him play with
this quartet in Birdland, NYC.They were fantastic. I thought 'Gateway II'
was one of my favorites of his. This is way up there (all this groups
recordings come highly recomended).from 'Cosmic Chicken (somebody please
release that)to Arcade, the organ trios, directions,etc..listen to this
man & the people he surrounds himself with. You wont EVER be disappointed.
UNFORTUNATELY, NOT THE BEST QUARTET.......2007-05-04
John Abercrombie's Return To ECM.......2007-04-20
"The Third Quartet" picks up where 2004's "Class Trip" left off. However, the music here is more refined and this is simply because this particular quartet has been playing together for 9 years. This music is very hard to describe. I wouldn't classify it as free jazz, because there is structure to the music, but I wouldn't necessarily call this music bebop either. What I would call it is chamber jazz. It's a deicate balance of classical and jazz. The jazz aspect of this music is obviously within the improvisations, but the music follows more in the lines of classical. This type of jazz is something Abercrombie has been working on for many, many years. The instrumentation on this album as with the groups other two albums is quite unique: guitar, violin, bass, and drums. Mark Feldman plays violin and is one of the better violinist I've heard that can improvise in a jazz context. His ideas are always interesting and melodic and they add color to a piece. He definitely is one of the best jazz violinist I've heard. Someone like Regina Carter needs to look at what Feldman is doing and take notes. He's the new jazz violinist that people need to be aware of. Marc Johnson, on bass, has been around for a very long time. He has played with so many musicians, but I think his best early work is with pianist Bill Evans. Marc has also released some very fine albums under the ECM and Polydor labels, most notably the album "Right Brain Patrol" remains one of my personal favorites of Johnson's. Marc always provides great support to his bandmantes. Joey Baron, on drums, is one of the wildest and most original drummers of the last 15 years. He's been an active member in Bill Frisell's band and has been apart of John Zorn's group Naked City and has also played on countless John Zorn albums. Baron's work with Masada, John Zorn's group that blends traditional Jewish music with jazz, has been a very rewarding listening experience. Baron's style is one that is in constant motion. He doesn't stay in one spot to long and yet he provides this group with what it needs: a driving force to propel it.
"Third Quartet" is a good place to start exploring John Abercrombie's later work. It has all of the naunces and textures of an Abcercrombie album but with more of a chamber jazz leaning. Very highly recommended.

Jump (or be forced) directly into the three-plus hour DVD on this a/v split release for footage of Josh Homme and band on the stage in London during the hottest months of 2005. There are plenty of behind-the-scenes shots of the ever revolving group. Foo Fighter Dave Grohl pops up. ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons pulls a cameo. It's all here. Key performances include "No One Knows," "Little Sister," "Burn The Witch," plus smoking versions of "Fun Machine" and "I Wanna Make It Wit Chu" (from Desert Sessions Vol. 9 & 10). The audio-only disc provides listeners with 75 minutes of pure QotSA including a powerhouse reading of "I Think I Lost My Headache" and an appropriately ragged "Long Slow Goodbye." This often strange picture is a fine fitting snapshot. --Jedd BeaudoinAlbum Description
You can think of this feature-length concert DVD/live album, which features all the crucial Queens hits from their studio albums, as a "to go" version of their decibel-happy shows, but that really won't be doing the three and a half hours of live, rare, and acoustic performances and behind-the-scenes footage of the band and their pals like Dave Grohl, Mark Lanegan, Billy Gibbons, and former Queens bassist Nick Olivieri making fools of themselves, justice. It might help to think of Over the Years as a 21st-century version of Led Zeppelin's The Song Remains the Same for the volume of its material, or even A Hard Day's Night for its willingness to show the Queens having a laugh, but they'd rather you see and hear it for what it really is--the definitive encapsulation of the band and their music from their not-so-humble beginnings to their current status as one of the rock's biggest and most dynamic acts. Included in the concert footage from the band's sold-out Brixton Academy and Koko shows in London last summer are live favorites from Rated R and Songs for the Deaf such as "No One Knows," "Feel Good Hit of the Summer," and "Go with the Flow," as well as new Queens classics from their latest album Lullabies to Paralyze like the smash single "Little Sister" and their most recent bombshell, "Burn the Witch." In addition to the three-plus hours of live and uncut Queens mayhem, Over the Years also boasts 75 minutes of audio bliss that covers all the bases Queens fans need to get the rush of their favorite songs performed live and loud shot directly into their homes. Also included are the brand-new track "Fun Machine" as well as "Make It Wit Chu," a previously unreleased gem from singer Josh Homme's fabled Desert Sessions, an ongoing series of collaborative songwriting and recording sessions where marquee musicians such as PJ Harvey and Deen Ween are invited down to his studio Rancho De La Luna in Joshua Tree, California, to join him in collectively exploring new musical terrain.Customer Reviews:

A Falling Experience!.......2006-01-28
When I finally decided to purchase this DVD I was a little worried. ( I owned songs for the deaf, and downloaded every single, and a whole bunch of random songs.) I didnt know if an entire DVD would entertain me. I saw them recently on tour, And they are Incredible. The live accuracy of the (ever-evolving) band was perfect. You hear almost EXACTLY what they have on their studio recordings.
Luckily, their album sounds, and live show COLLIDES into this wonderful set of discs.
During the first batch of songs("Flow" through "little sister") I felt like all I did was spend $15 bucks. But at some point I finally realised I was completely engrossed. A Perfect balance of familiarity and Improv. And of course, the DVD goes on for TONS of songs after that!. I Wish I could come up with a fault of this recording. But there isn't any. Great Sound, Good Song selection, Awesome Visual/Angle Imagery.
It also has alot of Hilarous crowd interaction and Clips
If your just skimming this review, This is a Great DVD/CD set. The Sound Quality is listenable, not like cheap LIVE recordings. PERFECT for putting on in the background. And ABSOLUTELY AMAZING to sit down and watch with the lights dimmed, maybe a couple drinks. = )
one of better music dvd's i own.......2006-01-14
the only reason why i only gave this 4 stars is because it was basically only one show with only one line up. i really would have liked to get better recordings (and better camera angles) of their older shows. oh well.
hopefully a kyuss dvd will eventually make it's way to shelves.

Album Description
Joey McIntyre is a modern throwback to the classic song-and-dance men of show business, a veteran who has starred on Broadway (in "Wicked") and off (Jonathan Larson's "tick, tick, Boom!"), TV (Dancing with the Stars, Boston Public), film (Tony and Tina's Wedding, The Fantasticks), records (selling 35 million as the youngest New Kid on the Block and a hit solo single, "Stay the Same") and the concert stage. Inspired to do the album by seeing Frank Sinatra perform at L.A.'s Greek Theater just a few years before the legendary crooner's death, McIntyre covers these songs "his way." "This is the music I grew up listening to," he says. "These songs are still so fresh. We tried to respect where they came from, but also give it a modern pop sensibility that reflects the times. It's not a throwback. This record is essentially who I am." McIntyre performed several of the songs from the album during the 38-city Dancing with the Stars--The Tour. "I always wanted to study dance and the show was like going to school. I really learned ballroom dancing. I knew I'd be able to perform before millions of people. I just didn't know it would be 20 million." On Talk to Me, he leads with a firm right hand straight to your heart, launching the next round of his career as a 21st century song and dance man.Customer Reviews:

Album Description
First time collection on CD! This Jane Froman package features the 1952 Broadway Revival of "Pal Joey" (where Jane provided the lead vocals for Vivienne Segal) along with the original soundtrack to "With Song in My Heart" - the 1952 film starring Susan Hayward in the life story of Jane Forman (Jane provided vocals for the film). The classic Rodgers & Hart "Pal Joey" album also features a standout performance from a young Elaine Stritch singing her showstopper "Zip." Digitally Remastered.Customer Reviews:

A Jane Froman double feature........2006-09-16
WITH A SONG IN MY HEART
Susan Hayward played Jane Froman in the film but Froman herself dubbed the vocals. This album of songs was originally issued as a 10" Lp. None of the tracks are taken from the film: They are all studio re-recordings. Later, Capitol re-released it as a 12" LP with two extra songs added. It is that expanded [program included here. Froman is in great voice, though the orchestrations are overly lush and string heavy. Still, the songs include such standards as "It's a Good Day", "Get Happy", and "Embraceable You" making for an enjoyable mini-concert.
PAL JOEY
Capitol's cast album of the 1952 revival has long been a collector's item. The original Lp was deleted in 1960 and did not resurface until Broadway Angel released it on CD (briefly) in 1993. As the stars of the revival Harold Lang and Vivienne Segal had already made a studio cast album for Columbia - an album that helped inspire the revival - they were unable to re-record their songs for Capitol, and the label turned to Jane Froman and Dick beavers to fill in. The revised orchestrations sound dated now, but here is a chance to hear Elaine Stritch singing "Zip" and to enjoy the lusty voice of Helen Gallagher early in her career.
In the end it's the WITH A SONG IN MY HEART selections (making their debut on CD here) that make this CD worthwhile. For PAL JOEY the studio recording (available from SONY) is preferable, however if one is so inclined you can assemble your own cast album of the '52 revival by combining tracks from both releases.
"Pal Joey's" Pal.......2006-07-30
another great twofer from DRG.......2004-01-21
WITH A SONG IN MY HEART was the life story of Jane Froman, with the lovely Susan Hayward in the lead role. Froman herself supplied the singing for the film. Numbers include "It's a Good Day", the bittersweet and humorous "They're Either Too Young or Too Old", "Blue Moon", "Get Happy", "Tea for Two" and "I'm Thru with Love".
The 1952 Broadway revival of PAL JOEY was the result of the huge success of a studio album released by Columbia the year before (which featured Vivienne Segal reprising her original role of Vera and Harold Lang as Joey). Segal and Lang headlined the new revival with Helen Gallagher (SWEET CHARITY, HAZEL FLAGG) as Gladys Bumps and Elaine Stritch (ON YOUR TOES, GOLDILOCKS) as reporter Melba Snyder.
Having already recorded their roles for the Columbia album, Segal and Lang saw little need in re-recording them for the revival album on the Capitol label. Instead, the roles of Vera and Joey were covered by Jane Froman and Dick Beavers.
The cast album suffers on many levels. First, the absence of Segal and Lang is quite distracting, and secondly the new Overture can't even compare with the scintillanting original.
The Columbia studio album is the version to buy in addition to this, though both albums have their strong and weak points. As per usual, Elaine Stritch brings her impressive and formidable comic timing to the fore in the show-stopping "Zip", and Helen Gallagher's silvery voice is perfect for "That Terrific Rainbow".
A fine addition to your collection. [DRG 19054]

The casting of cute, petite Bernadette Peters as the formidable Mama Rose in the 2003 revival of Gypsy led to a few raised eyebrows: Was this egregious miscasting? After all, previous Roses have included Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, and (on TV) Bette Midler, all of them strong women who can belt with the best of them. Peters took a slightly different approach to the role, emphasizing the dramatic reading of her songs instead of blasting her way through sheer power--she acts the material as much as she sings it. Nowhere is this as convincing as on "Everything's Coming Up Roses" and especially "Rose's Turn," the latter as good a rendering of showbiz madness as you're ever likely to hear. Peters's acting skills are further emphasized by the generous helpings of dialogue that frame the musical numbers. The rest of the cast is superlative, and Marvin Laird conducts a spirited orchestra. Discussions as to which recording of Gypsy is the definitive one will never end, but this album certainly deserves to be included among the finalists. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:
The best mama rose in my book.......2007-02-23
she uses her sex appeal to motivated the character. every thing about her mama rose rings true to a stage mother. by the end of the show her mama rose ripps throught the most intriging version of rose's turn recorded on media. the supporting cast is jsut as good, varying from fair to good. every thing about this production makes it one to rememeber.buy the cast recording and imagine a wonderful night at theater...it is sure to please
Bernadette Shines!.......2006-07-25
While I think Angela Lansbury comes as close to perfection as Mama Rose, Bernadette Peters is right on her heels. From what I have seen of Merman on tape and the original cast album, I don't think she so much created the character of Rose as much as she created a variation of Ethel Merman. I don't mean for that to be negative, any Merman was pretty great.
Forget about Russel in the film, and forget about Tyne Daly's vocally off (flat), mannered, and irritating performance.
Bette Midler also has to be included in the better versions list.
But Peter's (like Lansbury) doesn't just sing the score, she acts it, she becomes the character. And her Rose's Turn is a powerhouse.
Tammy Blanchard shines as Louise, the rest of the cast is fine. With one glaring exception, Danny Budtke singing All I Need Is the Girl, lisps his way through it sounding like a girl is the last thing he needs, completely unbeleivable.
A small complaint for an admirable recording.
GYPSY can't be beat.......2005-09-28
I saw Bernadette do this production and she was terrific. She imbued the character with the right amount of maternal terror as she pushes her kids through life in pursuit of her own failed ambitions.
Get this one. Get Bette Midler's. Get Ethel Merman's. Get at least one version of Gypsy and enjoy what the musical theatre is all about!
FANTASTIC!.......2005-08-04
In conclusion, this cd is certainly NOT to be missed and is also a must have for EVERY musical theatre buff and even for those who are not.
Bernadette is great! But why not Betty Buckley? Or Bette Midler?.......2005-07-20
1) Bette Midler
2) Rosalind Russel (though she is dubbed, she's still great!)
3) Bernadette Peters
4) Ethel Merman
5)Angela Lansberry (though she is better in Mame!)
Whatever you do, do not pick up Tyne Daly's version of it! I've heard rumors that she was violently ill recording it, but anyway, she still can't sing! (Though I can't see why they didn't record it another day when she wasn't sick...hmmmm....)
Enjoy this great soundtrack!

A Killer CD.......2007-03-08
Even at 70, George Coleman is a monster on tenor and Joey gives plenty of space to him throughout. Coleman is featured heavily on this CD, but don't forget that Joey is the greatest B3 player in the world and this band is arguably the best jazz organ trio playing today. They are so tight they can relax enough to explore the beauty of these standards with spontaneity and imagination. "These songs have been played a million times," says DeFrancesco in the liner notes, "but the level of live playing here is what gives the music its bebop and post-bebop beauty. We're all playing in the moment--balls to the wall."
Live: The Authorized Bootleg is one of the best recordings I have heard in quite a while. I strongly recommend it.

Product Description
Singer, dancer, actress; stage, screen, television: Joey Heatherton is a multi-faceted jewel of a performer. She first came into public view right at the end of the Fifties, when she joined the Broadway cast of The Sound Of Music. In the Sixties, she was on television all the time. Route 66. I Spy. Mr. Novak. The Virginian. It Takes A Thief. Hullabaloo. The Dean Martin Show. And of course, all those Bob Hope USO tours. She also hit the big screen with the likes of Bette Davis, Susan Hayward, Richard Chamberlain, and Troy Donahue. She also recorded singles in the Sixties for Decca and Coral Records, platters that frequently trade in the three-figure range on eBay when they show up. And if you find one with a picture sleeve... forget it. Her first album came for MGM in 1972, and it is re-released here in its entirety, with covers of Patsy Clines Crazy and the Beach Boys God Only Knows among its 10 tracks. We have augmented this recording with those rare early singles and more, for a total of 21 songs. Joey has been involved with the project from its inception, right up to choosing the cover shots. All the photography in the package, by the way, is by noted lensman Harry Langdon. The record was remastered by Gavin Lurssen of The Mastering Lab in 2004 from the original master tapes, and it sounds as good as it looks.Customer Reviews:

Nostalgic but still good.......2007-05-30
However she has a great voice and for those of us aging fans that remember her USO days and/or her Playboy Magazine appearance it is still worth having. It's on my MP-3 player with the rest of my music collection and I still enjoy hearing her. Now if I could just fit back into my old uniform the nostaliga experience would be complete!

Still water runs deep: subterranean brilliance.......2006-08-25
This is music that's impossible to dislike--anyone who appreciates good music will not object to your having it playing in the background. But don't be fooled: this is music that repays serious listening, even though the frequent minor modalities, suspended rhythms, and mono-toned, languorous mood will make it difficult for many listeners to absorb the program at one continuous sitting. (Apart from the two standards, I would be surprised if even an attentive listener could identify the songs after a single hearing.)
Pieranunzi takes few chances and makes no mistakes. One of the tunes ("Thought") is simply a melody played through once. On the other tunes Johnson's bass is given either equal or greater solo time than the piano.
While Pieranunzi's exacting and deliberate approach (he uses conservative voicings of chords but is a master at voice-leading) encourages Johnson to cut way back on his technique (no hint of twang, exaggerated decay, double stops, or tocatta-styled finger wizardry), the bassist is nonetheless more active yet no less definitive in his solos than is the pianist. Together they complement one another--a true piano-bass meeting of minds, with the drums marking cadences and providing carefully placed intensifiers and colorings.
I suspect Johnson has to be most happy not only about the substance of his solos but the sound of his bass, which is captured with striking, perhaps unequaled, verisimilitude.

A Great Julie Andrews CD.......2002-01-27
I found the material to be very well put together giving the listener selections from My Fair Lady, Camelot, The Sound of Music, Victor/Victoria and others. What more could you want?
As for Ms. Andrews, she is superb. There is simply no one like her. I have heard comments that prior to the infamous throat surgery she was unable to handle the difficult material and hit those high notes. This is just not true. All you have to do is listen to these songs recorded in the early 90's to know that she still had a marvelous voice. Lets hope that one day she will be able to sing and record again. If not, these may be her last recordings so treasure them.
The My Fair Lady suite is wonderful and Ms. Andrews definitely hit the high note at the end of "I Could Have Danced All Night".
Her version of "Edelweiss" and "The Sound of Music" are lovely.
Also worth listening to is "Living in the Shadows" written for the Broadway production of Victor/Victoria so you won't find it on the movie soundtrack. The lyrics are by Leslie Bricusse who also penned "Crazy World", which is another great selection on this cd.
Overall this is a cd worth having in your collection, so buy it today. Otherwise you are missing out.
Climbing Every Mountain with Mary Poppins.......2002-01-22
every since I stepped into a theater and watched Mary Poppins
(many years ago). I admire her talent and her voice on this CD. I know it is not as clear a voice as she used to have but I still enjoy listening to her. I listen to this CD when I want a "pick me up" and am proud to have it as part of my collection.
