4.5 stars - Severely underrated.......2004-05-25
Following the release of their 1981 album, 4, Foreigner took a break from recording for a while. The band had recorded four incredible classic rock albums, so they deserved a rest. By now, the spotlight had shifted elsewhere in the music industry, and the band wasn't nearly as popular as they once were. But this wasn't going to stop the band from rocking. In 1984, the band released its fifth studio album, Agent Provocateur. Read on for my review.
To put it in the simplest terms possible, this album is not up to the standards of the "classic four" Foreigner albums, but it's solid nonetheless. With this album (as well as the follow-up effort, Inside Information), the band shifted its sound toward something that fused classic rock with power rock. For the most part, the fusion of the two styles works. Although this album was never nearly as popular as the band's seventies albums or their early eighties effort 4, it DOES contain the band's biggest hit in terms of chart position - I Want To Know What Love Is. Sure, this song isn't the band's most popular song, but it's their only song to ever hit number one on the pop charts! Sadly though, it proved to be the only really popular song on the album. That's a shame, because it was far from being the only good one present. The opening rocker, Tooth And Nail, brings back memories of the band's earlier days. That Was Yesterday and Growing Up The Hard Way are interesting tracks in that they combine synthesizers with the band's usual rock stylings - and they greatly help the sound. The straight-up rock stylings of Reaction To Action make it another excellent song that is well worth listening to. From start to finish, Agent Provocateur is an excellent album. It doesn't top anything from the band's former days of glory, but it's still damn good.
THIS TEXT REFERS EXCLUSIVELY TO THE ORIGINAL AMERICAN CD RELEASE OF THE ALBUM, AND WAS WRITTEN ON MAY 25, 2004. Unlike the first four Foreigner albums, nothing the band recorded past 1981 has gotten the remastering and rereleasing treatment. This sucks, because these versions of the albums not only don't sound as good as the remasters of classic four albums, they also are out of print and difficult to find. If the record company can remaster and rerelease Foreigner, Double Vision, Head Games, and 4, and put bonus tracks on them, why can't they do the same for Agent Provocateur, Inside Information, Unusual Heat, and Mr. Moonlight? And who wants to hunt down these albums if their sound quality is weaker than the remasters and they don't contain bonus tracks? Obviously, no one but Foreigner die-hards.
In the end, Agent Provocateur is a damn fine classic eighties rock album. It's not the place for Foreigner newbies to start (they should start with the hits compilation, Complete Greatest Hits), but if you're a fan of the band and you want to see what they accomplished after their days of great fame, this is well worth picking up, and I think the overall quality of the album will surprise you.

Album Description
2002 album from Mercury Prize nominee. A superior British trumpeter with an attractive tone and a versatile style, Guy Barker has thus far recorded as a leader for Miles Music and Spotlite. In England, after formal study, he played with John Dankworth, the visiting Gil Evans, Mike Westbrook, Chris Hunter, Carla Bley, Ornette Coleman ('Skies of America') and Clark Tracey. Baker also worked extensively with Stan Tracey and played at repertory concerts. His Isn't It set for Spotlite includes an effective version of Bix Beiderbecke's 'In a Mist.' Good solid CD.......2004-02-17
'part one' of the album contains 7 tracks, most by barker himself, with 'nature boy' (beautiful ballad) and 'queen of the night' (one of the strangest jazz covers of classical tunes I've ever heard! it's a mozart tune from the magic flute) being the exceptions. most of the songs are upbeat, 'underdogs'has a 70s-style funky feel to it, partly due to the presence of hammond organ (tho' the intro is more mellow). 'purr' is a nice ballad.
'part two' is a suite written for an imaginary 'film noir', a tribute to the 40s and 50s film classics that Barker loves. it's called 'sounds in black and white' though the music itself is far from monochrome.
overall, a good buy, one of the better jazz cds of recent times.

80s Power Rock and a Couple of Good Ballads.......2006-08-05
The most memorable and perhaps longest lasting songs on this CD are the ballads and quasi-ballads. Songs like "That Was Yesterday" and "I Want to Know What Love Is" continue to get airplay on 80s stations and now some classic rock stations. "I Want to Know What Love Is" is not only a ballad, but a POWER ballad.
However, in addition to these ballads are less memorable efforts that are okay, but distract from the better songs. "A Love in Vain" and "Two Different Worlds" are also ballads, but while not bad songs they are clearly filler songs stuck in to fill out a CD.
While the ballads are what will keep Foreigner in the minds of many people, Foreigner really was a hard rock group. "Tooth and Nail," "Growing Up the Hard Way," "Reaction to Action," "Stranger in My Own House" and "She's Too Tough" are the kind of hard rock songs that defined Foreigner. Most have a flavor of the 80s, though for some songs the flavor may be a taste, for many the songs are easily detectable as 80s. However, just because the songs are 80s, they remain decent songs, and even decent hard rock songs.
Because this album was a follow up to the monster album "Foreigner 4 and because of some of the weaker songs on the album, the album has been maligned by a number of reviewers and critics. Fortunately we live in the CD age, and you can program this CD to match your musical tastes. If you like Foreigner the hard rock group, just program the five or six rocking songs, and skip the ballads. If you like most of the music except for the weaker ballads, program them out. If you take off the weakest songs, what remains is a pretty good album. If we take off the weakest five songs of the ten, you end up with an album that, while short on songs, has the kind of strength that "Foreigner 4" had.
I've enjoyed Foreigner's music for many years, though I am not as big a Foreigner fan as many others that have reviewed this album. Comparing this album to other Foreigner albums, I think it's one of their better albums. Admittedly it doesn't reach the peak of "Foreigner 4," but every group has an album that just seems to be a definable peak that they either do not hit again, or that it takes a long time to reach again. If Foreigner had not released "4," it may well be that some fans would have regarded this album as their best, or one of their best. Because of the weaker songs I give this CD 4 stars. Conversely, some of the better songs on this CD pull it past 3 stars into a solid 4 star range. If you like 80s power rock then I think you will find this CD interesting.
