5 out of 5 stars Wave...........2003-06-06

I first heard the opening track of this CD on my local NPR station, and searched and searched to find it. Those who feel this doesn't show off India's remarkable vocal range and control, need only listen to that track. The rest of the album is icing on the cake. Listening to the give and take of this collaboration is exciting. Obviously, a seasoned, but dynamic performance by Tito, coupled with the fire of India's vocal treatment lends something to this set. Definitely worth the time if you are a fan of either of these artists.

5 out of 5 stars best of India - best of Tito.......2002-05-23

This is the best album I heared of La India and also one of the best things of Tito. I would like to hear more of this kind of songs from La India. The salsa-stuff is a little bit booring, from the creative point of view, I think.

5 out of 5 stars Great combination of India's voice and Tito's playing.......1999-07-26

I was a bit sceptical when i bought this record because i only knew india from her salsa work. But i have to say that is one of my best jazz-vocal records. The combination of India's voice the intenes playing of Tito Puente is just great. The selection of songs is very good ranging from romantic to dancing. Altogether a great record!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent renditions of old classics from La India.......1999-02-02

Backed by the master of Latin jazz, La India outdoes herself with soulful renditions of old jazz classics. I'm 24 and the music has as much appeal to me as the more modern salsa of today. A must have!

2 out of 5 stars This album is not great, but tolerable..........1998-12-25

"La India" has produced excellent songs in past albums--danceable and beautiful beats. However, I was disaapointed with this one. "Jazzin" definitely has a jazzy, upbeat appeal and features old jazz classics, but these "old-timers" do little, if any, justice to the soulful, powerful, and youthful voice of India. Tito Puente also delivers, but salsa music is where the both of them deliver best!

Album Description

When he is talked about at all these days, it is mostly as the reflected glory of his association with Scott Joplin, Duke Ellington, or other luminaries of the early jazz pantheon. But now, with the compilation of all of his band's recordings from 1918 through 1920 on Jazzin' Straight Thru' Paradise, Wilbur Sweatman is finally getting the respect he has deserved for decades. Here are 25 tracks that chronicle the shift from ragtime to jazz and demonstrate Sweatman's seminal place in the development of the latter. At the same time, Sweatman's incredible clarinet pyrotechnics are on full display throughout. Jazzin' Straight Thru' Paradise features a 24-page booklet with extensive and illuminating notes by Steve Tracy, the noted scholar of the Harlem Renaissance, and over 74 minutes of the most exciting Dixieland-style music you'll find anywhere.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "Paradise" is the word!.......2005-01-29

Marvelous early jazz easily on a par with the recordings of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, though more big-band in style. I've been an enormous fan of Sweatman ever since hearing "Ringtail Blues" many years ago--"a ragtime orchestra gone berserk" was my description of this wonderful side. If only I'd gotten to hear the manic, drum-dominated "Oh! You La! La!" all those years ago, a side even more remarkable in its raggy jazzness than "Ringtail." And there is the remarkable Sweatman-penned jam number, "That's Got 'Em," which nearly qualifies as pre-1920 swing! There's a delightful kind of controlled sloppiness to the playing on these sides, a quality that is calculated and studied and always effective. I refer to a type of jazzy looseness that only the very best musicians can pull off. And these are great musicians. Bless Archeophone for giving us this priceless slice of jazz history. Get this one in your collection!

Album Description

Edgar Winter was born December 28, 1946 in Beaumont, Texas, brother of legendary blues guitarist Johnny Winter. After cutting his teeth in Texas night clubs, Edgar released his debut album Entrance in 1970, quickly followed by classics such as They Only Come Out At Night, (featuring the hits Frankenstein & Free Ride, both of which are re-worked on Jazzin' the Blues), the live record Roadwork (1972), the rock opus Standing On Rock (1981), The Real Deal (1996) and of course Winter Blues (1999). In the eighties Edgar played with various artists, including the likes of Todd Rundgren, Meat Loaf and Tina Turner.

As with Winter Blues, Edgar invited high quality guests to record Jazzin` The Blues: guitarists Steve Lukather (Toto) and Hiram Bullock, bass player Will Lee, drummers Gregg Bissonette and Rick Latham and trumpeter Lee Thornburg. Together they present an exciting voyage through the different spheres of jazz and blues, including master songwriting and creative soloing. With Jazzin` The Blues, Edgar Winter shows his ability to combine the past with the present without sounding muddled or pretentious while at the same time delivering exciting elements of new music.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Oh No.......2006-11-18

not at all what I would expect from Edgar Winter, and I mean that in the worst possible way. I enjoy Jazz, I don't enjoy what were great songs turned into musak.

3 out of 5 stars He has real feel for the music.......2005-08-23

You have to know the blues to really understand jazz music. That's why it makes sense for Edgar to cross over. You can tell he has real feel for the music.

3 out of 5 stars Fair.......2005-03-28

Three or four stars? I gave this cd 3 stars because it is fair at best.Edgar Winter is a kick-ass RB man / Rocker not jazzman! If Jazzin the Blues was more like Entrance or Jasmine Nightdreams this CD would be 5 stars! But it is not.I still dream of a reunion of the White Trash Band with LaCroix,Smith,Derringer and the rest. It could be a new CD or how about a double "LIVE" CD.I can dream can't I!I have admiration for Edgar Winter and have heard him live on 3 occasions....outstanding sax, keyboards and vocals , but please Edgar go back to what you do best.Kick-ass RB / Rocker!

5 out of 5 stars Been a fan for a long time, but..........2004-12-16

...this is the album I've wanted Edgar Winter to make since I heard Entrance and White Trash! Absolutely terrific songwriting--think Mose Alison combined with someone more personal like Joni Mitchell. Clever lyrics don't distract from the [...]-kicking playing. I don't dig the second track, which is a bit smooth for me--but beyond tyat, there isn't a false note on the album.

4 out of 5 stars I Like This CD!.......2004-10-06

Having seen Edgar Winter this summer at an outdoor festival, I was quite impressed with the chops he has maintained and the high level of musicianship that accompanies his act. He hasn't aged a bit, still sings like he was in his 20's and blows a mean sax and plays a meaner keyboard set up. This album is what I've preferred during my Edgar listening years -- more of the R&B, white trash style. Granted, it's toned down quite a bit with a jazzier influence, but it makes for a very good listening experience. Superb mix, great vocals, and some crazy renditions of his old hits, plus some very tasty new tunes. Probably what stands out the most to me, however, is his organ playing. He's got the keyboards dialed in to sound like a very meaty B-3 and the chord arrangements are sweet indeed. Great guest artists, including his current band line up which are super players. It's not very often you can get a album that not only has great vocals, great rhythm, great arrangements, a wide selection of tunes (fast, slow, funk, blues, soul, smooth, old swing band), a great mix, and great musicians --- all together mixed up in a basket of jazz -- Edgar style.

4 out of 5 stars Solid, but something is missing..........2003-06-04

My long time favourite is Bon Voyage, but when I saw this one on the shelf I bought immidietely. While listening, I had a feeling that all that groove and energy that I'm used to while listening to U.F.O. is gone in this album. (Or maybe not yet there, because CD is released 1995). However, it is still a solid piece of music and I would recommend it to a true fan of U.F.O.
              Keep Jazzin'!
