Sinéad O'Connor's first studio record since 2000's Faith and Courage takes her far into her Irish heritage with 13 traditional songs dusted off and set to new arrangements. Accompanied by stellar Irish and English-based musicians such as Donal Lunny (guitar, bouzouki, keyboard, bodhran, bodhran bass) and vocalist Christy Moore, O'Connor, who also coproduced, casts a hypnotic spell, making the old songs resonate with pulsing rhythms and sounds. Such contemporary treatment takes nothing away from the austere splendor of the material--in fact, this often seems a mystical recording just recovered from some ancient vault. Whether pining over unrequited love ("Peggy Gordon") or bemoaning the plight of a soldier who fled the Irish wars, only to be conscripted under Abraham Lincoln in the War Between the States ("Paddy's Lament"), O'Connor delivers an intimate and thoroughly mature performance, her whispered voice occasionally giving way to a primal scream. Melancholy to the core and astonishingly beautiful. --Alanna Nash

Best in years.......2006-02-27
Sinead O'Connor's first couple of albums were magnificent ground-breaking stuff which still sound great today. After that, her successes were more sporadic as she searched for a focus for her vocal talent and identity, often sounding hesitant and constrained. This is her best album in many years, singing with renewed confidence on a collection of purely traditional Irish songs that she clearly loves, such as Peggy Gordon, Lord Franklin, The Moorlough Shore and The Parting Glass, with a sympathetic cluster of excellent musicians ranging from Donal Lunny and Sharon Shannon to the dub On-U Sounds of Skip MacDonald (Little Axe) and Adrian Sherwood

should've gone with the minority vote.......2005-12-22
I read quite a number of reviews before I decided to get this and, while not a huge Sinead fan, I am a huge Irish music fan and have been moved to tears by some of the old Irish songs I've heard her sing on other CDs ("Skibbereen" will rip your heart out & make you want to hit the next Englishman you see!). I must say, I should have gone with the minority vote on this one. What moved me to tears on this was not her voice but the fact that I spent money on this CD at all! It was PAINFULLY overproduced so even songs that might have been able to hold their own sounded.....distorted??!! Anyway, I listened to the whole thing once...will never listen to it again. It is, in fact, on the pile of CDs to go to the used music store, where, hopefully, they will buy it. Maybe someone else will like it (obviously, quite a few Amazon reviewers already did).
Her Best!.......2005-09-06
If there's anyone who deserves to make an album of National pride, it's definitely Sinéad O'Connor. Throughout her whole career she's been aimless trying to bring her nation's troubles into the public eyes of the world; not always successful and often hated, she's definitely been a clear influence on many female performers such as Alanis Morrissette and Liz Phair. Sean-Nós Nua is a collection of old Irish songs made new (which the title of the album means "Old Style made New") and what a truly stunning piece of work. "Peggy Gordon" is a heartbreakingly painful song about homosexual losses, which obviously has some personal meaning for Sinéad herself, as she is a lesbian herself. The collaborations on "Sean-Nós Nua" are top notch, which only further improves on Sinéad's frailty as an emotional vampire. O'Connor knows exactly how to suck each and every single meaning out of every word she sings, her voice is as strong as it was 15 years ago, but it's clear that she's matured as a both a performer and a vocalist. One of the highlights on the album is the haunting "The Moorlough Shore" in which she drains every emotion out of; it's clear that she knows what the words mean. Another highlight is the delightfully sad "Molly Malone" which reaches an emotional peak at the point of tears (for both the listener and O'Connor herself). If but anything but for the nostalgic; O'Connor has her finest moment on record ever, her emotional approach often reaches emotional peaks, for better or for worse O'Connor is just too convincing, no tough guy here, everyone who listens will for sure shed a tear or two during this session.
Please, please, more of this........2005-07-11
I have liked Sinead in the 80s and 90s, but was kind of turned off by her hair style, superficial I know, and by some of her statements. Although I am totally for free speech, causing so much controversy on a TV show for example, wasn't so good. Having said that, that people still boo her in the US for that at concerts, is horrible.
I have been in love with Irish music since about 1990s and been to Ireland 3 times since. I love Christy Moore, Planxty, the Chieftains and Jerry O'Sullivan.
This album is right there on top of my most favorite Irish folks albums. Óró, Sé Do Bheatha `Bhaile (Óró! You are welcome home!) blew me away. I often enjoy songs in Gaelic, but a lot of them are rather slow and sad. This one is so powerful and strong it gives makes me want to hear it over and over again.
Powerful modern instruments, which I also enjoyed on Christy Moores Traveller CD make this a wonderful album. And a must own for Irish music lovers.
Why do they always want airy mysticism?.......2005-03-01
I know that, the moment you set foot on Irish soil, and especially the Connemara bog fields, an instant melancholy of the kind etched on this album hits you. But Ireland is so much more (it's the current western world's big origin; or, how the celts were driven out of europe and still managed to conquer the world :-). But then again, all trad music is so much more than switching between this airy alienating mysticism of the first degree and o-so-jolly reels & jigs, however facy produced. This last type is not even encountered on this album (thank god) - it consists entirely of whispy overproduced, over-echoed voice, over fairly bland musical arrangements, occasionally interspersed with unimaginative "modern" production, of the kind that often characterizes "updated" folk records with miguided ideas about updating. An update of traditionals you say? An over-mystified misinterpretation's more like it. It all sounds the same, you can't concentate on the lyrics. Ambient music at most ("as rewarding as it is ignorable" in Eno's words, though it tends to fall short on the second premise, as it gets on one's nerves).
One of the only bands ever to achieve a pretty good update of the folksound were the swedish/finnish Hedningarna, and even they sometimes fell in the pitfalls of reel/jig or unispired "updating" or over "atmospherizing". Their singer, Sanna Kurki-Suonio, almost succeeded in doing a good one with "Musta", but she, too, fell for the mystic stuff and supposedly modern production. Another example of good versus bad updating is "Marine" the first effort of Soledonna, the female singers of the corsican group Les Nouvelles Polyphonies Corses. Whereas that last group's John Cale produced effort, though famous, is an example of miguided updating, "Marine", not being obsessed with electronic rhythms, nor with the mystic of corsican singing, provides a splendid mix of chanson française and corsican polyphony. Still, on their second record Soledonna also fall a bit for the electronic groove vs mysticism thing.
Read my lips: a) trad music is more than mysticism; b) mysticism is more than airy ethereal vocals; c) updating is more than showing you've read chapter one of "how to produce a fancy sounding record" or "well, wonder what this button on the switchboard does -tweek- oh, groovy sound!". In other words, I get what she's driving at, and I've heard worse, but I've heard better trad music, better updated trad music, and, especially and most problematically, a lot of music that can convey more convincingly the mystic feeling of god's glory or whatever that she's trying to convey (just play any Vivaldi for soprano solo or your average Bach cantate).
I've nothing against artists going hosanna on the religion thing - it's their life (though I think adhering to any organised religion equals taking a dump on your own mind's capabilities), but please, keep on producing some decent work, and leave spreading the word to mor(m)ons, or do it in a way that I might be convinced (imagine, I once almost came close to believing when assisting in a church singing of the Weinachts Oratorium and the Passion of Matthew).

The Long Acre.......2006-03-13
I first bought this album on cassette right after it came out, then bought a CD copy after several years searching. This is a terrific blend of modern Irish rock, folk and traditional. This is a wonderful album with lots of feeling and great musicianship - nice pipe playing on there too! I first discovered this band after hearing them play "Seven Into The Sea" live at the "LIVE FOR IRELAND" benefit concert and subsequent recording. I highly recommend this disc if you can find it!

New ground and old favorites.......2003-05-25
A compilation of appealing tunes from Green Linnet artists old and new. The selections tend to be rather high-energy, and many are standard Celtic fare, though a few do feature some world music instruments and stylistic elements. Artists featured are fiddler Liz Carroll, the bluesy Old Blind Dogs, the bass-driven Lunasa, singer Niamh Parsons, fiddle and guitar duo Martin Hayes & Dennis Cahill, Patrick Street, fiddler Kevin Burke, the multicultural Reeltime, a Belgian group called Shantalla, Andy M. Stewart, the rocking Wolfstone, the fusion group Kila, singer June Tabor, the House Band, and the Celtic Fiddle Festival. Especially cool tracks are Niamh Parson's resonant, heartfelt "Fear a Bhata", and June Tabor's deep-voiced rendition of Richard Thompson's "(We're All Workin' for the) Pharoah". This is great, fun CD for highway driving. Each song is both interesting in its own right, and different enough from the others to hold a listener's attention.
