Elgar's Salut d'amour performed by the BBC Symphony Orchestra under Andrew Davis opens this two-CD set. After that, we go on a bumpy ride over performances of drastically varying quality. The "Poco Allegretto" from Brahms's Symphony No. 3 under Christoph von Dohnányi and the Cleveland Orchestra is breathtaking. Throughout the program there are a number of bite-sized editions of selections apparently deemed too long to sit through in their natural state. These leave the listener strangely empty. And this disc also contains a very weird arrangement of "Somewhere" from Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story, scored for two pianos and percussion, played by Guher and Suher Pekinel and Peter Sadio. Everett is right -- these are poor performances; the Duo is by far the worst of all the six or so available, for instance. The Wind Quintet is better served by Holliger or the Aleck Karis performance. Avoid this.

If you love the music of Elliott Carter do not buy this cd!.......2004-05-06

The consistently poor performances on this recording makes me regret i purchased this disc. In fact these performers owe me approximately 17 bucks. The inaccuracies of rhythm and pitch are consistant throughout the disc. In the Quintet the initial entrance of the winds is sloppy. Gra and Inner Song is sloppy and notes are missed and the performers gimp out on the multiphonics on every work on the recording. Do not buy this! If you love the music of Elliott Carter buy other recordings of these works!

Fresh Takes on Modern Classics.......2000-09-30

The wonderful thing about this recording is that there is really no crying need for it. There are no premieres here. Everything has been recorded before, and by heavy hitters like Andras Schiff and Heinz Holliger. In other words, the disk is not intended for educational purposes. The performers are not making a case for this music, any more than they would be if they were releasing yet another recording of Beethoven's late quartets. A project like this simply takes the value of the music for granted.

And the performances don't sound at all redundant. The musicians play with enthusiasm and great dynamic control. Everything sounds fresh.

One highlight is the "Enchanted Preludes" (which has been recorded twice before). Cellist Arto Noras and flutist Patrick Gallois generate a dancelike abandon that brings to mind the finale of Carter's Sonata for Flute, Oboe, Cello, and Harpsichord--all together appropriate, since "Enchanted Preludes" reporduces half the instrumentation of the Sonata.

Only the Duo doesn't quite reach the level of the rest of the disk. at least not on first hearing. I still prefer Robert Mann and Christopher Oldfather's performance on Sony. By the way, the Duo has now been recorded six times--surely some kind of record for an atonal, postwar chamber piece, and has proof, if any were needed, that the work has become a classic.
