Best Complete Symphonies You Could Purchase.......2007-02-25
It was a decision I do not regret.
Atterberg's complete symphonies has to be the best CD purchase I have ever made, out of a collection of 500 some classical CDs. There's nothing revolutionary about Atterberg's music. He takes what has been done already, and does it better, to the extent that this in and of itself is the revolutionary component of the works. Sometimes, it can even be frustratingly simple, such as how he insists time and again to end a movement or work with a V, I. Yet the depth, the color, the masterful orchestration: Atterberg's music is worth a hear, whether you are a fan of the twentieth century serialism or Baroque period music. Especially listen to this music if you are attracted to the music of Sibelius, Howard Hanson, Hugo Alfven, or David Del Tredici.
When I buy a complete symphonies set, I am sometimes overwhelmed and do not know where to go with it. So hopefully this plan will help those who wish to listen:
A) Start with the sixth symphony. The melody, orchestration, and tempo are especially enjoyable. Atterberg composed this for a Franz Schubert contest and won. (Originally, the contest called for a completion of his unfinished symphony, but it was so controversial, that the idea was dropped.) Atterberg decided not to show at the awards banquet since he didn't want to applaud the victory of another composer. How suprised he was the next morning when he saw the newspaper headlines!
B) Then listen to the third. The first and third movements are gentle and have soaring, gorgeous moments, while the second is a loud storm, reminiscent of Britten's storm in Peter Grimes.
C) The second symphony is stylistically similar to the third, with the first and second movements containing triumphant and broad, yet gentle sections. The second movement is especially colorful, and is my favorits movement of all the symphonies. The last movement was written after a frustrating performance of his Suite No. 1 that went sour due to poor musicianship. Thus, it's sort of a loud and forceful, though not angry, response.
D) The first symphony sets the foundation for the second and third. This is one of his three four-movement symphonies. Thus, we're treated to a scherzo that is well-worth its insertion. The second movement resembles the slow, broad movements of Atterberg's other symphonies you have heard thus far.
At this point, you may wish to listen to the River piece, included as an extra work in the complete symphony set.
E) The eigth symphony is Atterberg's other four-movement work. Once again, a beautiful Scherzo, and a complimentary slow movement that is more exploratory and dismally curious in nature than previous slow movements. The first and fourth movements show a more rough side of Atterberg.
F) The fifth symphony, the "funeral," is written in a darker, more abysmal style with alightly more dissonance and conflict than what the listerner is used to hearing. The second movement, however, is characteristic of Atterberg's slow movements, except more mournful and longing. The forward-movement leading to the climax leaves the listener clinging to every chord progression and does not fail to deliver a fulfilling revelation at the end with a thematic call of the brass and shrilling, pulsating strings. The counterpoint amongst the strings is also gripping. The third movement recalls moments of conflict from the first movement and the serenity from the second, but ends with a heavy waltz, sort of like dancing in 3/4 time with Death himself, except he weighs 500 pounds.
G) The fourth symphony is a smaller work consisting of four movements. The highlight is the second movement, which is the slow movement; it's soft and introspective. The other three movements are loud and violent.
H) The seventh symphony, which is the Romantic, was where I started when I got the set. However, it was difficult listening at first. The first and third movements are loud and heavy on the brass, symbols, and drums/timpani. The second movement is typical slow-movement Atterberg.
I) The ninth symphony is different than the previous eight symphonies. It's more of a cantata of Norse mythology. The writing is somewhat peculiar for Atterberg. The work alternates between violence and stillness, all leading up to the final doomsday battle. The symphony employs several soloists and a chorus.
If you find that you have enjoyed this symphony set and want to hear more, the Piano Concerto and the Horn Concerto may be logical next steps. Also, try some of Atterberg's chamber pieces. He wrote a piano quintet that is an arrangement of the sixth symphony.
Also, if you haven't heard them yet, listen to Howard Hanson's second, third, and fourth symphonies; Melartin's third and fourth symphonies; Alfven's fourth symphony; and Del Tredici's In Memory of a Summer Day. The orchestration, style, and depth are compliments to Atterberg's works.
A NEW HORIZON FOR SYMPHONY LOVERS..........2007-01-19
If you're like me, you have a passion for diving into lesser known symphonic realms, because a familiarity with the standard orchestral repertoire has created a need for new horizons. Reading a few reviews of Atterberg symphonies was enough for me to trigger my "impulse buy" mechanism. When the CD's arrived, I told myself that I would do the whole symphony cycle in one day (5+ hours end to end) no matter what I thought. I failed because I was unable to restrain myself from listening to these symphonies again for a second, third or tenth time. The SECOND SYMPHONY is by far my favorite. The sweetness of Sibelius with Mahler style brass along side the passion of Rachmaninoff, take you on a exciting journey through the possibilities of Swedish music. The second movement starts with a beautifully soft adagio of intimacy and love that ends up evolving into a monumental cadencial moment for Horns, Trumpets, Trombones and Strings. In the final movement, we find a fiery orchestral movement reminiscent of a Franck or Dukas symphony, with an evolved form of the second movement theme returning to vanquish the flames with a magnificent maestoso. The passion level in Atterberg's symphonies rival those of Mahler (my most favorite composer).
Every symphony in the Box is worth a listen, most of them are worth at least 10 listens. The THRID and SIXTH SYMPHONIES were worth that much to me. The only thing negative that I can say, is that none of the music takes me in a direction I've never seen before, with an exception of The NINTH "Sinfonia Visionaria." It is a very innovative and progressive piece with a baritone, alto and full chorus.
Bravo to the four German symphony orchestras that make this set, Frankfurt's was probably the best. There is more than enough zeal and enthusiasm contained within these disks for everyone to enjoy.

A brazen romantic.......2006-08-01
Atterberg's lifespan stretched into the second half of the twentieth century. But his compositional style remained firmly rooted in the musical expressions of the late romantic tradition, which flourished around the shift of the penultimate century, 1890-1910. As in the case of Arnold Bax, he was indeed a "brazen romantic." Thus his music is akin to that of Dvorak, Smetana, Bruckner, Mahler, Stenhammar, Elgar, Richard Strauss, Bax, Sibelius, and Vaughan-Williams, even if he had a style of his own. But he was reluctant to link it to early modernism and its atonal chromatism, as, e.g., Mahler, Richard Strauss, Vaughan-Williams and even Sibelius did. The musical world of atonal modernism was almost completely alien to him. His last, and very compelling symphony, called "Visionaria", was composed in 1956, and it has the form of an oratorio for mezzo, baritone, choir and orchestra, using texts from the Poetic Edda. Despite its late composition date, it shows just a few traces of atonal modernism, with twelve-tone rows in some of its melodies. It is basically a complex late romantic work, and, as such, perhaps comparable to the early Schoenberg's "Gurrelieder".
But don't let Atterberg's romantic conservatism prevent you from experiencing the astonishing beauty and power of his music. His symphonies are passionate, intense, very well composed, and often based on old Swedish folk tunes (this is especially the case with the eight symphony). The sound is thus very "Nordic," comparable to that of the early Sibelius (which, of course, was a greater composer than Atterberg - but he nonetheless recognized the quality of Atterberg's music). And in my view, among all his fine symphonies, the blazing first, the nostalgic and powerful second, the pastoral third, the dark and frantic fifth, the parodic sixth, and the enigmatic ninth are truly memorable and moving masterpieces that should belong to the standard repertoire of late romantic music (his second and fifth are my personal favorites).
Ari Rasilainen's Atterberg cycle is the first on disc. Raslilainen is a young Finnish conductor (b. 1959). It is perhaps not a surprise that a Finnish conductor supports an unfairly forgotten Swedish romantic composer. After all, if you love and understand Sibelius' early works, which I suppose most Finnish musicians do virtually by birth, you will probably appreciate Atterberg's music as well. Regardless or not if this holds in the present case, it is clear that Rasilainen is the best interpreter of Atterberg that we now have on record. Because this set is a reference set, in all aspects. First, Rasilainen's interpretations are first class -- he knows his Atterberg by heart. Second, without an established performing tradition behind the back, the German orchestras (Radio-Philharmonie Hannover des NDR, Radio-Sinfonie Frankfurt, SWR Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart, and NDR Radiophilharmonie) play with perfect confidence and brio. Third, a spacious and clear recording catches every note.
For a reasonable price, you have a splendid piece of almost unknown music in this set, beautiful and beautifully performed and recorded. It is thus an essential purchase for everyone interested in the aftermath of late romanticism in music during the twentieth century.
Strongly recommended!
The Complete Symphonic Oeuvre of a Swedish Romantic.......2005-03-07
I will not review the individual performances here as there have already been some very good reviews posted here at Amazon for each of the separate releases. [Simply do a search here at Amazon using the keyword 'Atterberg' and links to all of the symphonies will come up.] I would also suggest you give a listen to the sound samples at various of the symphonies to get an idea of what they are like. My own favorites are Nos. 7 & 8, but others might want to start with No. 3 (that third movement is extraordinarily lovely and well-played by Rasilainen and his orchestra.] All of them have been reviewed by Swedish music maven David Hollingsworth. I've reviewed the 7th and 8th symphonies and Thomas Bertonneau has reviewed No. 9. No need to repeat all that here. We all agree that these are excellent performances of symphonies that are in the post-Straussian Romantic style. If you like that sort of music I can pretty much guarantee you'll like these.

Not Bad For a Concept Album.......2006-06-14
But it is good. Very good. Miri Ben-Ari is an amazing violinist (The Beautiful Temple and Sahara are her two other, less revolutionary studio albums) and her staccato-filled style aligns perfectly with the snare and bass beats and rap vocals that go along with it. Her talent is evident throughout the entire LP.
Which leaves the success of this violin-rap concept album up to those singing and rhyming over the notes. For the whole, the line-up of guests hold up and help deliver a decent listen.
1. Intro
2. We Gonna Win- Styles P is alone with Ari on the first song. I've never thought much of Styles P as a rapper and still don't after this track but Miri holds her own. 8/10.
3. Jump and Spread Out- Fatman Scoop and Vicious come with a hot dancehall/reggaeton sound on this track. Miri is awesome. 7/10.
4. Fly Away- Miri's best on the album. She's accompanied by Fabolous, who drops a better-than-average verse. Kanye drops a disapointing few lines. Musiq covers the chorus. 8/10.
5. Hold Your Head Up High- Lil' Mo whines terrible lyrics over a weak beat. The violin presence is little. 4/10.
6. Sunshine to the Rain- Scarface and Anthony Hamilton (who already have worked-well together) deliver a great song. Hamliton's voice sounds smooth over Ari's music. 9/10.
7. Lord of the Strings- a short poetic song with J.Ivy reciting a poem about Ari accompanied by Ari's violin. 8/10.
8. Chillin' in the Key of E- just Ari in E. No guests. Sounds great. 9/10.
9. Miss Melody- best song on the album. Akon sings over an almost-haunting repetitive piece by Ari. The beat, produced by Akon, is a perfect simple snare n' bass. The song is about 4 minutes long and is followed by a violin solo. 10/10.
10. New World Symphony- Pharoahe Monche guests on this track. The man has got to be the most underrated rapper around. His flow on this track is ridiculous. He raps to the violin rather than to the drum beat and it works. Not to down the beat, Kanye kills it. 9/10.
11. 4 Flat Tires- Cash Money and Miri Ben-Ari. Doesn't work. But Lil' Wayne's verse is good enough reason to go and buy the whole CD. 8/10.
12. She Was Just a Friend- Anthony Hamilton and Algebra combine with well with the string-light Ari on this one. Most R&B-type song on the album. 8/10.
13. I've Been Waiting For You- John Legend has a great voice and Consequence has great rhymes (he shows-up Kanye on this LP). Good song. 8/10.
14. Star-Spangled Banner- Doug E. Fresh beatboxes over Ari's violin. Her violin is amazing. His beatboxing ruins the song. 4/10.
15. Jump and Spread (Reggaeton Remix)- same song but even more Latin. Pitbull brings a very "crunk" sound to the final track on the album. Fatman Scoop is kind of annoying. Zion and Lennox also jump on this track. 9/10.
Overall, this album is worth buying because there is not another album like it. Miri Ben-Ari deserves a hand for her violinist skills and for being courageous enough to try this concept-album. It has some weak spots but the Akon, Anthony Hamilton, Lil' Wayne, Pharoahe Monche, and friends help save the whole.
4 out of 5.

Most underrated album EVER.......2006-02-23
I think some people said this song has too many features, or it derails too much from tradition, or that it's a dumbed down version of classical music. It's a break through piece of art in my opinion. Its fusing hip hop and classical music into another form of art work. If anything its should be categorized as modern classica. Sometimes it's more like she's a producer that makes amazing beats for the backbone, and then the artists completes it by putting in the soul and body. At the same time her presence is definitely know throughout as a performer, because her skills is just extraordinary. It's a shame many people have never heard this album.

Inversations is a great title, and drummer Ari Hoenig lives up to it by turning tunes on their ear, building interesting melodic structures without losing his connection to listeners. Working as he frequently does with the lyrically self-possessed French pianist Jean Michel Pilc and German bassist Johannes Weidenmueller, the Philly native immediately grabs our attention with a jabbing, hard-edged reconfiguration of Charlie Parker's 'Anthropology." On an album dominated by originals, he's equally good at accentuating the ebb as well as the flow on ballads. With nice contributions from saxophonists Jacques Schwarz-Bart and Will Vinson, the music is always in motion. You're never unaware of Hoenig's presence--he's an aggressive, more-is-more type of drummer--but he has the personality to make that approach work and the gumption to hold things together. --Lloyd SachsAlbum Description
On "Inversations," drummer Ari Hoenig's debut as a leader for Dreyfus Jazz, he not only displays the excellence he has come to represent as a sideman with such masters as Kenny Werner, Joe Lovano, Pat Martino and many others; but Hoenig also sets a bold new standard for himself as a bandleader that is sure to please the most discerning jazz aficionado. Hoenig's drumming prowess pervades this recording. His youthful vitality and unbounded energy are only two of the main ingredients of his profound musical substance that shine brilliantly on "Inversations.""Inversations" is comprised of nine tracks (eight of which are Hoenig originals) that feature Hoenig's trio sharing their musical skills in a wide-ranging repertoire of hard bop and free avant-garde jazz. Their acclaimed improvisations speak directly to the listener in a standard of jazz language that includes hip jazz riffs, quiet sophistication and syncopated dynamics.
Customer Reviews:
I'm pretty much speechless . . ........2007-02-23
Leader/drummer Hoenig and pianist Pilc have played together quite a bit before, but they've never unleashed the full artillery as they do here. First of all, Pilc is a ridiculously talented player, an ADHD-ish, frenetic groove-meister--and I mean nothing negative about that assessment. He charges out of the gate on the opener, the Charlie Parker number, "Anthropology," and Hoenig matches his every move. Together they create a kaleidoscopically feverish movement of sound and rhythm that blows away any lingering cobwebs.
The next selection, "Dark News," a dusky, smoky ballad, rings with hard-won authority that too many jazzers seek to evoke but don't have the proper access to and perspective on the hard life that most creative improvisational musicians daily experience.
"Rapscallion Cattle" (huh?), after laying down an entirely attractive mid-tempo groove, morphs into a blazing forum of drum pyrotechnics, followed by some very smart alto-sax statements from Will Vinson, a name new to me but someone to watch closely, then devolves into general controlled mayhem from all involved, and finally ends with a quite attractive pullback outro.
"W. B. Blues" opens with some righteous musings from the very accomplished bassist Johannes Weidenmuller, a long-time Hoenig collaborator, slides into a demonstration of way-colorful drumming by the leader, who, passing the baton to Pilc, uncorks a series of pianisms so bloozy as to break your heart. Hoenig counters with wildly idiosyncratic drumming, underscoring the feral heart of this crazy number.
On "Farewell," a mournfully elegiac ballad, the band proves they can nail musical/emotional heartbreak as well as anyone. I'm especially taken by the expressively dolorous sentiments purveyed by Weidenmuller's brilliant solo, deftly followed up by Pilc's somber solo.
"Falling in Love with Love," the beguiling Rogers and Hart vehicle, receives a thorough deconstruction only to undergo a deft and loving retrieval. I'm especially taken by the highwire group interaction, highlighted by the Pilc/Hoenig antics played out around the middle of the number and casually trumped by Weidenmuller's great bass solo.
Music of this brilliance often astounds more than endears. Not here. "Astoundance" and endearment so regularly entwine that one can't, and, in the long run, doesn't care to, untangle them.
Highest recommendation.

Honest and Straightforward.......2005-11-06
The first single is a perky pop song titled "They're On to Me", and like the title suggests, it portrays the paranoia that ensues when a specific subject is dwelt on endlessly. "Monsters" covers very similar lyrical ground, especially when he sings "Once you start to question yourself, the road you take leads down, down, and this goes to show you, ignorance is underrated." For some reason that is never stated explicitly, Hest feels the need to battle the monsters that exist both inside and outside of his head. "A Fond Farewell" begins with him singing, "My mother once told me the thicker your skin, the better off you'll be when this world brings you down". It all suggests that he is prepared to fight for himself, but still bracing for the fall that seems ultimately inevitable. "Aberdeen" expresses the same theme again, when it addresses the protagonist's need to escape the suffocating atmosphere of a small town, without making clear whether he has the wherewithal to actually follow through. Even the love songs follow this same mindset, especially on "Fascinate You," where he narrates a tale of a man who sublimates his own identity to impress a potential lover, but with frustrating results. Despite all of this personal turmoil, the songs themselves are relatively straightforward, melodic, and catchy, suggesting a folksy cross between Teddy Thompson and Dave Matthews, with standard pop-rock arrangements.
The way I figure it, if Ari Hest had to fight this hard to get to where he's at, far be it from me to knock him down a peg. I respect his resolve, and I appreciate his music. The only real fault here is that he spends so much time being honest without ever revealing much about himself. The difference between being self-absorbed and self-obsessed is marked by attracting an audience, or alienating them. I just hope that he doesn't get any more self-serious than he already is. B+ Tom Ryan

Album Description
"...Infinite possibility, if I can only break down this fourth wall/I'm living in a room for everyone, finding my space under the sun..."and so goes the title track of Ari Gold's sophomore release, Space Under Sun (Released Nov 2003, independently over the internet on Gold 18 Records). In a market saturated with manufactured stars who for the most part are perfectly content churning out the same old cliché's, Gold is determined to shake pop up and find a space for his music in a postmodern world. "I wanted to make an album that I didn't have when I was growing up," Ari told Larry Flick of Billboard magazine in 2001 regarding his first album as an openly gay pop singer which would later take home the Outmusic Award for Outstanding Debut Recording. With Space Under Sun Gold goes even further musically & lyrically and creates a pop landscape that goes beyond boundaries and labels. After landing on Top Of The Pops with DJ Luck and MC Neat on the UK single, "I'm All About You" (Island Universal) co-written and produced by hitmaker Desmond Child, Gold began working on Space Under Sun. He collaborated with top notch industry songwriters and producers such as Peter Amato (Leanne Rimes), Marsha Malamet (Luther Vandross, Chaka Khan), MAJOR (Lamya), Mr. Khalil (Res), Steve Skinner (Rent, Bette Midler), Soong Lee (Allure) recording all over the globe from Atlanta, Miami, LA and NYC to London and Israel. Gold describes the album as "an intergalactic hybrid of 80's and contemporary R&B, spacey pop, and funky smooth soul." Gay City News stated that "Gold pushes the envelope as much as a rapper like Eminem does." Although instead of lyrics that are fag bashing and woman hating, the subject matter ranges from a guy and a girl (Kendra Ross, currently featured on the latest CD by Talib Kweli) fighting over the same man ("He's On My Team") to getting caught having sex in public with another man by the cops ("Caught), to diva worship ("Fan-tastic"), a matter that is crucial to many a gay man's evolution, seeking independence and self actualization ("More Than Enough," "Back To me") to romantic and sexual intimacy ("Funk That Ship," "Intimate.") There is also the tender ballad "Bashert (Meant To Be) in which Gold incorporates his Jewish identity of having grown up as an orthodox Jew. The 13 track CD includes a downloadable music video of "Wave Of You" directed by Guy Guido which was shot as a tribute to the late great photographer Herb Ritts as well as an mp3 of "Review My Kisses" a song co-written and produced by Desmond Child. Gold will continue performing in NYC where Time Out magazine said that he was a "smash success...wowing the local music scene" and Backstage called his musicianship, "flawless" as well as around the globe to promote his new CD.

Sol Gabetta Plays Tchaikovsky, Saint-Saëns, and Ginastera

Born in 1981 in Argentina into a French-Russian family, Sol Gabetta is a strikingly talented, brilliant cellist and, judging from her photographs, a winsome beauty. After winning her first contest in Argentina aged ten, she captured awards at various prestigious European competitions, including the Tchaikovsky in Moscow and the ARD in Munich. Now embarked on a flourishing concert career, this is her debut recording. The program pays homage to the countries of her birth and heritage, with Ginastera's "Pampeana" No. 2 in its orchestral version, and two staples of the virtuoso repertoire: Saint-Saëns' Concerto No. 1 and Tchaikovsky's "Rococo Variations," followed by three of the composer's less-familiar pieces. All display her natural, effortless technique, her warm, rich tone, charm, and youthful exuberance. Gabetta sometimes takes excessive liberties: very fast and very slow tempi, sentimentality and explosiveness, and a habit of swelling long final notes and tearing them off with an accent. She plunges into the Concerto with fiery abandon, but after a super-romantic first movement, the second is beautifully delicate, subdued and graceful. Tchaikovsky's Rococo Theme is all smiling charm; the Variations have lots of character but the contrasts are somewhat exaggerated. His "Pezzo capriccioso" is brilliant; the Andante from his first String Quartet and the Nocturne from his Six Piano Pieces, in his own arrangements, are slow and melancholy. Ginastera's four-part "Pampeana" alternates slow, sensuous sections with fast unbridled dances, all played with genuine idiomatic feeling. An exciting young cellist to watch. --Edith EislerCustomer Reviews:
You Will Not Hear A Purer, More Beautiful Cello Tone Anywhere!.......2007-03-07
This CD also features Tchaikovsky's three other works for cello and orchestra, given stunningly ravishing accounts by Gabetta. These are not mere "filler" works; instead, they represent Tchaikovsky at his creative best, and it is wonderful to have all his works in this genre on one CD, especially when given such lovely performances. The CD also features Saint-Seans' Cello Concerto No. 1, given a fetching performance here, which highlights its lyrical qualities more than its rhapsodic qualities, which succeeds once again in drawing attention to the purity of Gabetta's tone. Indeed, throughout the work, she produces a consistently light and pleasant tone, as befitting music by this composer. The CD finishes with a wonderful 8 minute work by Argentinean composer Alberto Ginastera from 1950 that is exciting, colorful and inventive. This recording is the first recording of the work in its cello/orchestra version (the original was cello/piano). Gabetta once again does not disappoint, delivering a thrilling performance.
The Munich orchestra plays very well on these recordings and the sound quality is bold and clear with a close focus on the cello. Perhaps the only drawback to this is that it seems that one can hear the cellist's movements and breathing at times. (If others also find this to be the case, please note so in the "comment" section under this review or in your own review.)
Those who have been waiting for a cellist with a pure, singing tone (to rival what some violinists bring to that instrument), wait no more! Sol Gabetta has just such a tone and these performances are an absolute must-have for those looking for a beautiful cello sound.
