First of all, hats off to Bon Jovi for trying something different with This Left Feels Right--a selective collection of their most popular songs with a twist. That twist isn't a purely acoustic reworking, MTV unplugged style--anybody looking for that experience will be sorely disappointed by what's on offer. What Bon Jovi have done is re-record these songs in a completely different way while maintaining the original lyrics, melody and song structure. What's different then? Well, quite a bit actually. Check out the almost trip-hop beat and distorted vocal of "Wanted Dead or Alive", or the lazy soul of "Livin' on a Prayer". "It's My Life" is a beautiful piano-only standout, almost worth having the whole album for.The tracklisting isn't perfect, concentrating largely on their 1980s period (there's nothing from These Days, for instance). As such, the venture works as an effective cheese-extraction exercise, keeping the elements that made the originals so great, but removing shouty, hairspray-fuelled "whoa-yeahs". What we get is something that is closer to Jon Bon Jovi's last solo offering--the criminally underrated Destination Anyway. It doesn't always work ("Bed of Roses" just sounds like a warbling cover of the powerful original and by the time they reach "Always" it's obvious they've run out of new twists), and no doubt there will be legions of bemulleted faithfuls who will denounce this as blasphemy of the highest order. Sure, it's probably just record-company filler, but it's a worthwhile investment and you won't be embarrassed to have it on when your mates come round. --Cortman Virtue

"This left feels right" sounds like it was done by a high school cover band trying to be artistic. Ranks WAY below Tesla (see "Five man acoustical jam" for those of you younger then 30).
I am a Bon Jovi fan and bought this without reservation. I suggest you sample the songs before you buy.

Imaginations Revisited.......2007-05-12
Fans who had a problem with the larger than life sound on A Night at the Opera should find A Twist in the Myth a welcome return to the "classic" Blind Guardian sound. I happen to love A Night at the Opera, but I can also see how the complex arrangements, layered vocals, and related elements could turn off some metal fans. A Twist in the Myth hearkens back to the days of Imaginations From the Other Side. This is the most straightforward power metal album we've seen from Blind Guardian in quite some time. Don't get me wrong, there are still plenty of progressive elements, but A Twist in the Myth owes far more to Helloween and Iron Maiden than Queen. Oddly enough, you can judge this particular book by its cover. Comparing the magnificent cover art on A Twist in the Myth to the artwork for A Night at the Opera tells you almost as much about the differences in the two albums as actually listening to them.
A Twist in the Myth is packed with glorious (but not Hammerfall cheesy) power metal anthems, balanced by the occasional renaissance faire song (see Skalds and Shadows). I loved Fly, Carry the Blessed Home, and Another Stranger Me immediately, and it didn't take much for the rest of the album to quickly grow on me. It's an extraordinarily professional album as well, in every aspect from the musicianship to the vocals to the production to most especially the songwriting.
A Twist in the Myth is easily one of the best metal albums of 2006. It might not represent a big step forward for the band, but it is an extremely good power metal album that is more than worthy of the name Blind Guardian.
NOTE: Most versions of A Twist in the Myth feature an audio interview as bonus material. The interview is interesting enough, though not much different than what you'd find in Brave Words or other metal magazines or sites. I'd much rather have the bonus track (All the King's Horses) that went to the Japanese market. I know that Japanese fans are a big part of metal's success, but I can't help but be disappointed that there are parts of the Blind Guardian legacy that the rest of us continually miss out on.
A tighter, more concise album....but too short for the wait.......2007-05-10
Blind Guardian's last studio album, A Night At The Opera, was released in the spring of 2002. While their long overdue second live album was released in 2004, it has been a long wait for fans of the German power metal band for new material. Compounding matters was the departure of long-time drummer Thomas Stauch, for reasons which I'm still unclear about. When "Fly", the first single from "A Twist In the Myth", was released, there was more than a bit of controversy swirling around the band, and its direction. Was Blind Guardian "selling out", as overzealous fanboy types would say?
In a word, no. "A Twist In The Myth" is pretty far from any blatant attempt to pander to current trends, nor is it an attempt to merely tread water to appease that segment of the metalhead crowd which fears any change, no matter how minor. The biggest change you'll notice here is that the sound has been tightened up, if you will. Have no fear- you'll still hear heavily overdubbed, massively multi-tracked vocal harmonies and guitar symphonics, a la Queen. However, everything is more precise and "stabbing", and a little less sweeping and loose. The vocal harmonies have a tad fewer tracks layered, and the songs are a little more insistent in pace, and shorter in length. Those expecting another huge, lengthy epic such as "And Then There Was Silence" will be disappointed.
The songs themselves are pretty strong, with the possible exception of "Lionheart", which is lacking in a strong hook. The opener, "This Will Never End", is one of the band's stronger album-openers, although they have never been that great at choosing an opening track on albums after "Somewhere Far Beyond". "Otherland", "Turn The Page", and "Straight Through The Mirror" are all high-octane classics, filled with memorable melodies and guitar work. While "Fly" doesn't have one particularly outstanding hook (after all, this band is about the melodic hooks), it is an impressive evolution of the slightly electronicized sound from "Sadly Sings Destiny" (from their last studio album), and boasts a fair amount of atmosphere. Meanwhile, "Another Stranger Me" is pretty straightforward, but boasts a very catchy vocal line at the end of the chorus. The requisite ballad format is represented by a pair of tracks, the Queen-inspired funeral hymnal "Carry The Blessed Home" (inspired by Stephen King's "The Dark Tower- Book VII"), and "Skalds and Shadows", another of the band's medieval-styled ballads, in the vein of "A Past and Future Secret". "The Edge" and "The New Order" round out the album nicely.
My biggest problem with "A Twist In The Myth" is that, for a band which takes its time with releasing new albums, there's simply not enough music on this one. While I appreciate that they want to pare down the album to minimize filler, and the fact that they underwent a pretty major lineup change, I can't help but feel that this could have been more than it was. The new drummer/flutist/bagpipe-player, Frederik Ehmke, does an admirable job of fitting in with the band's over-the-top, yet straightforward style, although we have yet to see his long term impact on the sound. Hansi's vocals are, as par for the band's recent efforts, less roaring and more high-pitched, and the backing vocals, as usual, are first-rate. The guitar work is certainly emotional and well-structured, with plenty of adept fretwork that is a bit tricky, but never self-indulgent.
I'd certainly recommend this album to anyone who likes melodic metal and hard rock. I just wish the band had put more on record this time around. I can only hope that their release schedule will be more rapid in the future.
A New Direction for a Classic Metal Band.......2007-04-27
It had to have been hard for the band to play the songs from A Night at the Opera live because of all the orchestrations. The band seems to have kept that in mind when recording this album. If you're expecting to hear Queen-like vocal sections like the ones in A Night at the Opera, then you are in for a disappointment. Likewise , Orchestrations have taken a back seat. Rather than elaborate, layered Keyboard parts, this album's keyboards are much more subtle. There's a few strange "nintendo-ish" sounds, as someone else pointed out, hear and there. It's almost reminiscent of what you might hear from an act like HORSE the Band.
This album is probably most like "Imaginations from the Other Side" then any other album, because it is probably the most diverse. There's Thrash Elements, Acoustic Ballads, Straight-up Rock songs, and classic Iron Maiden-ish Metal songs. All in all, this album is a good buy for Blind Guardian fans (except the ones who only like their early days, and even they might find something to enjoy hear) and fans of modern metal.

Hap Palmer may be best known for his vocal contributions to the hugely popular Baby Songs video series, but parents of 2- to 5-year-olds, particularly those with a sturdier than average educational bent, will find a lot to love on Early Childhood Classics: Old Favorites with a New Twist. This release rids itself of tiresome attempts to turn performances of simple songs like "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" into minor personal masterpieces and instead injects its de rigueur dose of creativity directly into familiar lyrics. For instance, while there's the usual cow and pig on Old MacDonald's farm, we're also introduced to Henrietta's House, where there's a cat, Zebediah's zoo with its tiger, and the puppy in Pamelina's pet shop. Similarly, instead of the usual "Pat-a-Cake" cliffhanger, where the cake's put in the oven and that's all she wrote, we get to hear the ding-ding-ding when it's done and layer on the frosting. The sequence of songs is repeated instrumentally after Palmer's interpretations to allow for sing-alongs and the dreaming up of more new lyrics--a useful device for caregivers who think like teachers (those who don't, though, can make use of clever movement and activity suggestions in the liner notes). Each song's wordplay and simple rhymes are catchy enough to fall into the can't-fail category when it comes to enhancing vocabulary, phonics, and vocabulary skills, and the surprise lyrics lend themselves nicely to attentive listening. Early Childhood Classics delivers old-fashioned fun in a satisfyingly unsplashy way. --Tammy La GorceAlbum Description
Here is a joyful collection of all time favorite activity songs for young children. Hap Palmer's unique renditions preserve the charm and simplicity of traditional songs while adding new, original lyrics and melodies to extend and enrich the familiar classics. The simplicity and repetition of these songs guarantee active participation by encouraging children to sing and move with the music. While having fun and participating actively, children develop motor and musical skills and learn about animals, counting, identification of body parts, and phonics. As children sing along, responding to the imagery and humor of the lyrics, reading readiness is also enhanced. Alliteration and rhyme develop a child's ear for the sounds of language - an important pre-reading skill.
These songs are developmentally appropriate for the very young child - infant to 5 years. However, the familiar melodies and contemporary arrangements also elicit surprisingly gusty participation from first and second grade students. A variety of musical styles adds new life to well known songs with swing, blue grass, country, classical, rock, pop, and blues arrangements.
Fifteen songs are presented with vocal interpretation. The sequence is then repeated instrumentally providing opportunities for singing along and creating new lyrics using children's ideas. The instrumental selections also familiarize children with the sounds of a variety of musical instruments including piano, bass, drums, guitar, violin, viola, cello, trumpet, trombone, tuba, French horn, saxophone, flute, English horn, accordion, and a variety of percussion instruments such as conga drums, bougaraboo drum, ouiro, shaker, wood block and tambourine.
The instrumental versions of each song can be used in the following ways:
1. After children have learned words with the vocal version, they can sing along hearing only the music.
2. Children can create their own lyrics and sing the song using their ideas.
3. The music can accompany sessions in movement exploration and creative movement.
Suggestions for activities and variations are not limited to those presented in this guide book. There are endless possibilities awaiting your creative impulse.

The Kronos Quartet--apparently tired of performing some of the most riveting Western classical works composed in the last century--decided to take a vacation with Caravan. Where did they go? As evidenced by this globetrotting disc, seemingly everywhere. Music from the Middle East, South America, India, Portugal, and California (to name just a few) find their way onto this genre-blurring disc, along with a few surprises. They do a dizzying take on Dick Dale's "Miserlou," which we learn was originally written by Nicholas Roubanis in the '30s; perform a tune from India's bustling "Bollywood" film music industry; and tackle Terry Riley's inventive "Corgeo Funebre en el Monte Diablo"--the second movement of his Requiem for Adam (written for the late son of Kronos leader David Harrington). These are disparate but enthralling works that run the gamut from frenetic to reflective. Even though Caravan sounds less cohesive than Kronos's other world music foray, Pieces of Africa, this is still an enthralling collection and a must for Kronos fans. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:

Another great Kronos.......2002-07-09
This is mostly middle eastern/central europe stuff and even if I THINK I know way some argentinian/portuguise tracks are in this (because of that argentininan tango has it roots in middle europe.. portugal cobining bandelon with portuguese fado) it feels misplaced here but artisticially it is very good performed anyway and... hows about "Miserlou Twist" then.. well composer of that old hit has his roots in Libanon so.. :-).
Anyway is this very good, fun, well played and sound, production is also something extra.
You be pleased with this if you like stringquartets with more of a folklore style but my advice is that you by this togheter with Nuevo then you have two great great discs.
People used to Kronos cooperation with Glass, Steve Riech should like this but it is def. NOT minimalism att all.
Stunning.......2000-11-19
Then I heard of Kronos Quartet. They were raved about on a movie review for "Requiem for a Dream," which they are mostly responsible for the entire score on. So, I decided to give them a bit of a chance. I bought three of their albums, "Early Music," and "Kronos Quartet performs Phillip Glass." The most important of all of these is "Caravan."
The last CD I listened to, I was a little afraid to, because I figured I'd enjoy Western pieces a little more, and probably wouldn't like the more 'world' sound this album seems to say it has.
I couldn't have been more wrong, from the opening track, "Pannoia Boundless," I was in love, raving about it to everyone I knew. Every track seems to have an energy that oozes from within it, these dynamics that manage to grab me and toss me around every time. Even the weakest track, being "Cortejo Funebre en el Monte Diablo," because of the horribly synth-sounding beats, horns, and bells, still has a certain power after you get past the horrible intro of the song.
Either way, Kronos Caravan is a great listen for anyone just dabbling in classical string quartets and wants something a little more high power and intrusive than your average "background music."
And they never stepped off the train..........2000-07-22
Osvaldo Golijov's arrangements excel at highlighting various effects of instrumental combinations. That's a plus. However, these performances are mostly shorn of whatever vitality is inherent in the compositions, by the quartet's lack of rhythmic unity and attack - some of these takes sound like tentative rehearsals. The worst in this respect has to be "Aaj Ki Raat". Anyone who knows Indian film music is aware of its energy and manic quality. This performance, however, has none of that, opting instead for a navel-gazing lack of dynamism that actually serves to bury the melodic theme, in lieu of which we are given the sound of tablas, which even Zakir Hussain can't make jive with the ennervated ensemble.
Not surprisingly, the only impassioned performance is "Turceasca", likely because most of the music is played by Taraf de Haidouks, a Romanian Gypsy ensemble that lends its "quaint" and "primitive" spunk to the tastemaker quartet, producing a "rousing, olde country" stewe.
Anyone with an interest in music beyond her/his borders should pick up the real thing, spend a little money, force her/himself to get used to its strangeness, and maybe she/he will come away a little wiser. Oh, yes, purchase an honest classical disc next time, as well.
Beautiful!.......2000-07-13

Album Description
Songs of THE BEATLES with a Cuban TWIST.Here Comes el Son merges the spirit of The Beatles with the soul of Cuban music. It offers Beatles fans a rare bifocal musical experience: familiar Fab Four tunes rendered in grassroots Afro-Cuban rhythms. This musically rich CD also presents the music enthusiast with an exotic compilation of songs of the most famous Rock 'n Roll group in the world in styles never heard before.
HISTORICAL FACTS
Banned in Cuba during the early years of the revolution, Beatles music managed to break through and establish a following that endures to this day in Cuba. HCES emerges from that following as the FIRST record of Beatles songs played in traditional Cuban musical rhythms. It is also the FIRST record performed in English by Cuban musicians residing in Cuba.

Album Description
The Simple Twist of Fate CD had its genesis several months ago, when Dave's True Story was invited to play the annual DylanFest at a winery in upstate NY. The assignment was simple--the repertoire must be all-Dylan. The band members (Kelly Flint: vocals, Dave Cantor: guitar, and Jeff Eyrich: standup bass) picked their favorite Dylan songs and went to work on transforming them into the Dave's True Story style. Just before going onstage Dave commented, "either we're going to be tarred, feathered and run out of town for taking liberties, or they're going to love it." The audience apparently loved it, as there were many requests afterward from people to "buy the CD." The band had a great time doing it, so the next week they convened at Bennett Studios in New Jersey and recorded their Dylan program, including "Simple Twist of Fate," "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue," "I Want You," "Just Like a Woman," "You're a Big Girl Now," "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues," and a classic Dave rendition of "If Dogs Run Free."Customer Reviews:

Interesting side project.......2005-12-20
transition to Dylan songs very well. Also nice to hear Dave's more folk side of playing-- with still some nice little jazzy elements. I like all the 'Radio Mix' ones the most I think, & the slightly quickened pace of "Just Like Tom Thumb Blues" is a fine contrast to female covers like Judy Collins or Linda Ronstadt (& her lower voice too is distinctive contrast to them). I don't know if we need three versions of "You're a Big Girl Now," but interesting anyway. If you ever wondered what say, Peggy Lee, might sound like singing Dylan-- here's your chance. Maybe they can do some Joni Mitchell songs next!

I have always wanted to hear a "cool chick" do Dylan - Joan Baez was great - but hardly cool.
DTS have done a wonderful job.

Please do more Dylan!
