5 out of 5 stars Lucia Popp.......2005-09-22

To hear the achingly tender voice of the late, great soprano Lucia Popp in live recital brought tears to my eyes and made me all the more mindful of what a tragic loss her death was. As always, her instrument is perfect and the interpretation of the material is elegant. This recital was done when she was in her mid thirties; her (then) husband, the conductor Georg Fischer, accompanies her on piano.

3 out of 5 stars Popp's Ambitious Song Recital.......1999-09-13

Lucia Popp was one of the world's premier lieder performers. This recital from 1975 shows her extraordinary musical intelligence along with a maddening tendency to sing material not really suited for her voice. The Dvorak, in particular, is ill-suited for such a small instrument. The Schubert is much more appropriate, even Die Junge Nonne, which she sings with lyrical intensity. Her Schubert Hyperion set, recorded a year before her untimely death, shows her artistic powers in a more glowing and autumnal context.

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal! In technique and sound ..........2004-12-07

Thomas Heywood is a tremendous organist, from his technical style to interpretation. This is one phenomenal recording. Played on the 1876 Centennial Organ at St. Joseph's Cathedral in Buffalo, New York, Thomas Heywood uses "all the stops!"

The fully restored E&GG Hook organ is allowed to speak throughout the entire program. One of the things that makes Heywood a great organist is his ability to showcase the instrument and not just his technical virtuousity. That said, the first piece on the work is the rarely recorded Alfred Hollins, Concert Overture in C major. This work has to be one of my all time favorite pieces! There isn't a technical flaw in the entire piece, and every stop on the organ is used in one way or another in the piece. Concluding this piece, one hears the Stenterphon and Tuba Mirabilis shining through.

After this piece comes symphonic arrangements of Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by Thomas Heywood. He is a superb transcriber as well as musician.

While we could address every track on the disc, you'd think we were embellishing. Far from it. This disc just makes an organist's mouth water. Two other pieces deserve mention. Heywood wrote a Humoresqe for Pedal Trombone. The piece could have well been written specifically for this organ, as it has a 16' pedal trombone stop and continues as a 32' Contra Bombarde. What a delight to hear this neoclassical composition.

Finally, an Aussie playing a spirited rendition of the Star Spangled Banner? When you hear this, you will stand up in honor of the piece and how well it is played.

5 stars? Not enough to do this album justice. You've simply got to hear it to believe it.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars PBS respectability and a Carmen from Iceland.......2005-09-24

This Cd is basically a ufnd-raising moment from PBS--ice enough, glossy, nothing really wrong. But the spirit of Carmen the gypsy is nowhere in sight, and between Abbado's careful conducting and von Otter's very chilly Scandanavian singing, I found little to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable piano playing..........2003-02-25

This kind of "gala" concert is not normally my taste but my word, what a line-up. I actually have the DVD of the concert and it is superb in every respect. The selection from Carmen is outstanding with Bryn Terfel particularly so. Gil Shaham is a superb if not entirely perfect soloist in the Carmen Fantasy. There are several moments of untrue intonation in this very diffcult showpiece but the violinist's panache and charm are simply irresistable.

The purely orchestral items are wonderfully done with Maestro Abbado on his best form as is the BPO. However for me, the highlight is the Rhapsody by Rachmaninov. I'm not a huge fan of up close hand shots of piano players in concert, but this occasion is mesmerising. Pletnev is simply incredible. I have never heard and seen such articulacy and virtuosity before. It is a superb performance from all parties and all at the service of the composer and the work.

The last section after the famous 18th variation has got to be seen to be believed. The colour and imagination in the playing is really amazing with Pletnev virtually standing up to negotiate the double glissando to the final bars of the piece.

This is close to perfection in a very difficult and musically treacherous work. The recording is also very well balanced and the camara work is also expertly done. Enjoy the audio CD if you want to but for the full experience go for the DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Three cheers for Mikhail Pletnev!.......2000-07-12

Anybody who loves Rachmaninoff's Paganini Rhapsody MUST listen to Mikhail Pletnev play it! He has proved that he is not only an outstanding conductor but also an exceptional, intricate pianist. By far, this is my favourite recording of Paganini Rhapsody.

5 out of 5 stars Never has a CD so instantly became my favorite!.......2000-06-23

I heard Gil Shaham's rendition of Sarasate's Carmen Fantasy and knew I had to have the CD. Much to my delight, after listening to the CD only once, I can honestly say that if I'd heard any piece from the Berlin Gala I would have had the same impulse. The collection possesses magnificience and power! The energy is phenomenal. Definitely not a CD you want to play if you want to doze off. All of the pieces are very accessible to the classical neophyte, giving it instant appeal. Do yourself a favor and have this one overnighted!

3 out of 5 stars lovely singing- poor sound.......2000-04-09

It's always a pleasure listening to Alain Vanzo - the 'Nadir' of this live highlights recording. Spoorenberg also is in very good voice, though I've never heard of her before or since. The 'Nourabad' and 'Zurga' are no less than average.

So, the singing is lovely, sometimes even wonderful. Why then is it only a three star recording? Well, it's a highlights-edition without the libretto (meaning that noone really understands what this is all about). It's also recorded live, not always bad from a theatrical point of view, but the sound quality of this recording is unfortunately rather poor.

But, if the beauty of the singing itself means more to You than the sound quality, and if You like the idea of the essence of an opera caught on one disc instead of two, this is very good listening for hardly no money at all.

This recording was my first version of 'the pearlfishers', and I loved it. Today, when I own three versions of the opera, my first choice is the Vanzo/Micheau/Bacquier complete 1959 live recording with Rosenthal conducting. Although, for newcomers to the opera, I can recommend this recording as an introduction to some of the loveliest music ever written!

5 out of 5 stars For Birgit Nilsson fans.......2003-08-22

If you follow Birgit Nilsson's career, she has 3 recorded Leonores

      1956 - Kleiber (review below)
      1964 - Maazel (Decca)
      1970 - Bernstein (this one)

The 1956 is her best!! This version is also good but the sound is not as good as the 1956 (surprise? I think it has to do with the remastering). I guess you wouldn't be looking at this set if you weren't into historical performances so this review is specially for such people.

      REVIEW:

I always by lesser known labels with trepidation because I can never know what kind of sound quality I will get. However, so far my experience with Koch Schwann is that they provide superb sound quality. This is the second Koch Scwhann set that I bought. Yes, this performance is in mono, but it is superb mono - the best possible with lots of space around the music. I think Och Schwann has access to the original masters because these transfers are superb. Everything is crystal clear. The mono sound quality is definitely full-price quality.

Having put the question of sound quality to rest, what about the performance. Well, this is Birgit Nilsson's first recorded Leonore, and in my opinion, it is certainly her best. It is definitely better than her Maazel performance. Here she seems more involved than in the Maazel performance. Perhaps it is because she was not that famous in 1956 (her Met triumph was 1959) so it is possible that she worked harder at her characterization here and there is a palpable difference. In Maazel, she seems to lack interest in doing the part well - perhaps she was then famous and very busy doing too many roles and that affected her. Yes, I would definitely recommend this Birgit Nilsson set in mono and at full-price above the Maazel Decca set in stereo and at mid-price. Firstly, the sound quality here is superb - you needn't worry about the mono - it is superb mono. Part of the reason is that this was done specially as a radio broadcast and not from staged performances so the producers made sure that the singers are clearly heard and the orchestra well- balanced. Secondly, Kleiber's conducting is definitely superior to Maazel. Maazel (25 years old, thereabouts) was very young when he conducted the Decca set with Nilsson and his inexperience shows. On the other hand, Erich Kleiber (father of Carlos Kleiber) was a legend - witness his legendary Figaro with Decca in 1955. Unfortunately, he passed away shortly after doing this broadcast.

There is another performance Birgit Nilsson as Leonore - the Rome 1970 version with Leonard Bernstein. That version is terrific but for one thing, the sound quality there is not as good. And although Birgit Nilsson with Bernstein was better than with Maazel, she is still the best down here. Yes, this is Birgit Nilsson's best Leonore. All the rest of the singers are in top form.

      5 out of 5 stars A superb performance........2003-02-25

I must say. This is a wonderful live performance. It has an electricity which is missing in most studio versions. Birgit Nilsson here is far superior to her performance for Maazel (Decca). Her voice is warm and intense here whereas she is steely and frigid in Maazel. Birgit Nilsson here is far superior to Janowitz in Bernstein's later version. Janowitz's lyrical soprano sound too anemic - it lacks power. You don't get any kick out of listening too Janowitz. Yes, her voice is pure and beautiful. She sings with commitment and feeling. The problem is that this is FIDELIO. you don't just want to hear beautiful emotions and feeling, you want a DRAMATIC SOPRANO to pin you back in your seat!!!!!! Nilsson's legendary voice has the power of a nuclear plant. She does exactly that. When she hits those top notes, you are literally blown away. Ludovic as Florestan is also superior to Rene Kollo. Ludovic sounds far more at his wits end than Kollo and Ludovic's voice has more power. There is far more intensity and emotion here. Helen Donath is wonderful as Marzelline. Lucia Popp may sing more beautifully, but I think Helen Donath sings with greater intensity and soul. You kind of feel what she is thinking. Here it's a close call between Lucia Popp and Helen Donath. Theo Adam as Don Pizarro is far superior to Hans Sotin for Bernstein(DG). Theo Adam has more venom and intensity. The other singers too sing with an intensity which is not found in Bernstein's more popular 1978 DG version.

The only drawback is the recorded sound is not too good. It is a live performance. And some details are lost in the recording. But what is lost in detail is made up for by the intensity of the singers. I give 5 stars for the performance. The recorded sound should be 3 stars. Ultimately, the best version is still Klemperer (EMI) in which Christa Ludwig intensity blows every other recorded Leonore away - the power of a dramatic soprano mixed with raw emotion and intensity. But this Bernstein is certainly an outstanding performance with the kind of soul and intensity seldom found in studio recordings. The Klemperer, of course, is the exception that proves the rule.

If you are planning on Bernstein, I think this version would satisfy you more than his version for Deutsche Grammophon(DG). And it's far cheaper too. Yes, you sacrifice clarity, but ultimately, you want a Leonore to pin you back to your seat and you want singers with raw emotion and intensity. This version of Bernstein's Fidelio is like being involved in an action movie, the thrill is there but in the process, some details become fuzzy. Bernstein's later DG version is like reading a book. Everything is more or less crystal clear. But you lose some of the thrill of being in the action. Finally, there are some bonus tracks in this CD set - some performance from a live recording of Fidelio by Erich Kleiber in 1956, with Birgit Nilsson again. It is interesting to see how Nilsson has developed between 1956 and 1970.

Remember: in classical music, cheaper does not imply inferior. Don't discount this version. Enjoy this superb performance at an incredibly low price. You may enjoy it so much that you don't see a need to buy Bernstein's 1978 DG version.

      5 out of 5 stars Wow!!.......2003-02-22

Good performance - less than desirable but good sound quality.

      5 out of 5 stars Sobrevivire.......2005-08-27

Ainhoa's performance of "Sobrevivire" is downright amazing, just completely off the hook.
I'm proud to say I was obsessed with this show, I loved it, I have every single episode recorded, and I am convinced that this is the best reality show of all time.
But back to Ainhoa's performance, wow, when I saw it, I knew right then and there that she would win the whole thing, it's not just the best performance in the history of Operacion Triunfo, in my opinion it's one of the best ever, even outside of the show. It's truly the reason she won, not that she didn't have the talent to win without it, but that really set her apart to the point that no one would ever catch up again.
Noelia is also pretty good, by Miguel Nandez I believe, I haven't seen the shows in a while.

      5 out of 5 stars I will survive (sobreviviré).......2003-09-24

This record include an outrageous version of the song "Sobreviviré" (previously recorded by Mina and Monica Naranjo) . This song and its on stage performance by Ainhoa is considered the all-time-best for this spanish reality show. You must hear it and see it.
