Why isn't this guy more famous?.......2002-12-23

I was hooked the first time I heard Daniel Viglietti, but I had to hear about him through native Uruguayans. I probably would have never heard this incredible music if I hadn't asked them: "So, what's music like in Uruguay?" They put on Viglietti, a variation of the CD "A desalambrar." I instantly needed to get some, but was frustrated by the complete lack of availability of his music in the United States. This was two or three years ago (now some of it, though not much of it, is finally available through Amazon). I actually had to go to Uruguay to purchase his music. I found some discs during a roadtrip to Rocha from Cabo Polonio. Then something amazing happened: Viglietti was waiting at a bus stop outside of Cabo Polonio and signed my CD. The highlight of the trip. He was very friendly and spoke to me in perfect English.

"A desalambrar", originally released in 1969 under the title "Canciones para mi américa", contains numerous powerful and beautiful songs. Most of the songs are Viglietti singing alone with his guitar. Other songs have accompaniment from violin, flute and other instruments. The title, I've been told, was a slogan of a politcal group meaning something like "cut the wire" or "cut the wires on the fences." The song is powerful and singable even if you don't know the words. "Duerme, Negrito" is a lovely and angry song about someone telling a child that their mother is slaving away at a workcamp: "Trabajando, trabajando duramente." One of my favorite songs on the CD, and the one that will shock the Spanish speakers you know, is "Me matan si no trabajo" (They'll kill me if I don't work). There are no duds, or even mediocre songs, on this CD. All reward repeated listenings.

I will forever be grateful to my Uruguayan friends for introducing me to Uruguay's best kept secret.
