Anyone familiar with the history of Mexico knows that the country as we know it today was born when the Spanish conquered ancient Mexico in a bloody and ruthless war, and then subjected the country to systematic exploitation and violence. In the midst of all this, Mexican music was born. This CD is a testament to the nobility of the Mexican spirit. It is vibrant evidence that even a tragic and violent clash of two cultures can produce soulful, majestic, and exquisite music. Many of the songs on this CD approach masterpiece status in their simplicity and beauty. Rivera has a nuanced and controlled voice and the huapango riffs and requinto guitar are superb. All of the songs are in a pure style and are performed only by one voice, huapanguera guitar and requinto guitar. Listening to numbers like "Soy el Huapango" and "Cielito Lindo" you can feel the music pouring into your soul like nourishing honey, melting away all of your pretense and tension. Close your eyes and you can imagine the green valleys, majestic plains, and mist-covered mountains of Mexico. You feel sadness and Mexican nostalgia in numbers like "El Jinete" and you feel the romance and innocence of Mexican music in "La Leva" and "La Cecilia". This CD is a supremely tasteful, masterful and heartfelt performance and it deserves to become a classic in the huapango genre.

This has become one of my favorite all-time CDs. Wish I couldlearn more about the artist and his other work. If you like authentic music, rather than over-produced schmaltz, you will not be disappointed with this disk.
