Tebaldi at her best!.......2007-04-07
I'd highly recommend these CDs!They have a little of everything. They'd make an excellent addition to anyone's opera collection. Her voice is etherial!
Tebaldi the Great.......2007-02-19
Renata Tebaldi is one of the glorious voices of the past half century. Recordings here come from the 1950s and 1960s. She had a sumptuous spinto voice, clearly manifest on this 2 CD set. Here are some of her "greatest hits." As would be expected, the repertoire of Puccini and Verdi is heavily represented here.
She "leads off" with "Un bel di" from Puccini's "Madame Butterfly." Her voice brings life to this aria; her characterization is right on. At the point, where the volume of her voice increases, the sound remains lush; there is no bleating or ugliness in her singing.
There follow two more classic Puccini arias that Tebaldi does justice to. "Si, mi chiamano Mimi" from "La Boheme" is a wonderful version of this work. She captures the poignancy in Mimi's character. Her work here can probably justly be termed "iconic." In short, this is a ravishing turn by "La Tebaldi." So, too, is her take of "Vissi d'arte" from "Tosca." One can understand the enthusiasm of her claque at La Scala as one listens to her singing. Her rich voice fits these roles nicely; her characterization is well rendered. Her version of "Ritorna vincitor" from Verdi's "Aida" is also well done. Her voice richly captures the character and fits the music well.
Verdi and Puccini are not the only composers represented on this 2 CD set. Also recorded are her singing Boito ("Mefistofele"), Rossini ("William Tell"), Cilea ("Adriana Lecouvreur"), Giordano ("Andrea Chenier"), Catalani ("La Wally"), and so on. Once more, the selection of music in this set well represents her body of work.
All in all, a satisfying selection of "the greatest hits" of Renata Tebaldi. The "liner notes" conclude by referring to her as possessing "a perfect voice of bewitching beauty." I'm not sure that anyone can achieve perfection (the statement has a bit of hyperbole); nonetheless, her voice is ravishing as already noted. Those interested in her recorded oeuvre would be well rewarded by acquiring this work. The CDs serve well to introduce "La Tebaldi" to those who may not have heard her before. Such listeners will be richly rewarded by that introduction.
A legacy for the ages!.......2001-02-23
Perhaps the greatest spinto and certainly among the greatest sopranos of all times, with an extremely powerful, amazingly beautiful instrument, Renata Tebaldi on this set heard in some of her best moments! I will not repeat comments on her beautiful voice since it often overshadows the pathos with which she performed each role. To me, she knew exactly where to draw the line between acting and singing. Not too much to become annoying, not too little to become boring. This compilation also shows how versatile this soprano was, with repertoire ranging from Puccini and Verdi to Rossini and even Wagner (though no Wagner aria is heard on this particular double cd). In her early years she also performed Mozart roles!
Her Puccini arias will make the most demanding listener cry. Her verdian heroines, enriched with her personal touch, are of exceptional value. Her Desdemona (Otello), Donna Leonora (Forza del destino) and Aida stand perhaps out. Her many verisimo roles sooo moving, full of sorrow and pain, exactly how they are supposed to sound. Just listen to "La mamma morta"! An unsurpassed shocking experience! A previous reviewer (F.W.Barton) correctly mentioned that not all moments are from her complete studio recordings, so this is a unique chance to enjoy alternative Tebaldi performances. Strongly recommended!!!!
Best Collection.......2001-01-11
If you love the warmth and power of Renata Tebaldi then this collection is for you. This has Two CD's of her best works. My favorites are her "o mio babbino caro" her tosca which isnt as dramatic as callas but has a vocal warmth in that aria that makes her voice so perfect for the aria. Another soothing aria would be her Un del di from Butterfly what sweetness and amazing finish to that aria!!! Her amazing power was noticed in La mamma morta and In questa reggia ( which was sooo good that it made me wonder WHY DIDNT SHE SING THIS ROLE ON STAGE) oh and of course her Suicido was also very well done.....Renata Tebaldi was without a doubt one of the best of the century...and this collection proves it.
Modified rapture.......2000-04-24
I bought this collection of Tebaldi's Decca recordings with the hope to experience some great singing. However, I can't help feeling a bit disappointed in the end. There are some thrilling performances here, for example, the dark, passionate renditions of the arias from La Gioconda and L'arlesiana, but overall, the achievements are rather uneven. Tebaldi certainly possesses a most beautiful and powerful voice, something to take bath in. Yet, she evinces little of the psychological insights, intense pathos and interpretive individuality of Claudia Muzio, Meta Seinemeyer, Maria Callas and Leonie Rysanek. Compare her performance of 'Ma dall'arido Stelo divulsa' from Verdi's 'Un Ballo in Maschera' with that by Leonie Rysanek (On RCA Living Stereo): The aria is magnificently vocalised by Tebaldi, but it is Rysanek who effectively combine vocal opulence with dramatic insights, evincing Amelia's exteme desperations. Perhaps Tebaldi was constrained by the restrictions and protocols of recording studios and unable to realise her full dramatic potentials --- in this case she is best heard on live recordings where we could experience her in full flight. Furthermore, the 1964 Come back album items on the second disc demonstrate a voice that has lost much of its pristine freshness and youthfulness, even though there are exciting things to hear. Still, the beauty of the voice and the sincerity of utterances are there for us to experience. For ardent Tebaldi fans, this is definitely a must, but for those looking for truly great singing and acting, you might want to look elsewhere for Tebaldi's live recordings and Maria Callas, etc.

Customer Reviews:
La Regina.......2005-05-31
I believe Mirella Freni to be one of the greatest artists of all time, as these discs will attest. The aria from La Wally is definitive, nobody sang it better. Her Mimi is legend and she is considered the ideal Butterfly. The way she wraps her voice around Tschaikovsky is miraculous. She is a fabulous Verdian and Tebaldi said that "Freni is the last of the Italian spintos." Her progression from lyric to dramatic roles is totally convincing. Hearing Freni as Fedora in Washington was a revelation. Her voice was big and beefy. Having heard Jane Eaglen in Seattle many times, I feel that Freni's voice is every bit as big.
Enjoy this tribute to a simple Modenese goddess.
Thank you for the music, Miss Freni.
How beautiful is the female voice? try this!.......2005-05-05
This 2005 two CD compilation of operatic favorites will likely please Mirella Freni fans for two reasons: first reason is the selection of songs chosen to highlight such a long and lustrous career. DECCA chose wisely by not going off and producing a "little known" salute, but rather focused on the singer herself, and those songs and characters she has become identified with over the years. How beautiful is Mimi's "Si, mi chiamo Mimi" from Puccini's , La Boheme? How passionate and poignant is Butterfly's, "Vogliatemi beni", especially when sung against Pavarotti's Pinkerton? How dramatic can a soprano shade Verdi's Elisabetta voice in Don Carlo', "Tu che le vanita"? How much emotion can one pump into poor Desdemona's final "Ave Matria" in Verdi's Otello? And without going over the edge, how much innocent excitement can a soprano bring to Tchaikovsky's "Pulskai poginbnu ya, no pryezhde (Letter scene) in Eugene Onegin?
DECCA's "In Celebration" answers these questions unequivocally. This CD answers such questions and leaves the listener in awe - at least it did me - of the beauty, power and subtlety of the female voice.
Second reason to own this CD is the voice itself. Mirella Freni's soprano is round, open and full. Said another way: no nasal lapses from this singer. Her tone is rich and smooth, and her diction is - well, she was born in Modena, Italy. It's a voice that needs no further explanation. Musically and vocally, this 2-CD set is a winner all around.
As readers of these reviews know, it is this reviewer's opinion that a CD has to set and hold a mood and not break that mood once established. It's no joy to have to reach for the "skip" button on the remote when listening to music. That's not to say this collection doesn't have variations or that it's all maudlin - not that there's anyting wrong with being maudlin. By consistent theme I mean it doesn't have unnecessary interruptions in its overall operatic mood. You expect to hear Mirella Freni's voice in some of her most communicative moments, and that's what you get. Lasty, accompaniment is provided by different orchestras at different times in her career, but the different orchestras present no problem. The overall sound quality of this CD set is superb throughout. The transition to digital is balanced and won't necessitate any adjustment in volume in any of the 23 enjoyable and vocally descriptive cuts. I recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
A truly wonderful live performance, with only weak point in the sound recording........2007-06-28
This is a recording of a live performance made more than 10 years ago.
The sound is a bit distant, but clear enough.
The performance itself is simply first class. The protagonists all performed well: Raul Gimenez is a true bel canto tenor, but of course, grossly underrated. He may not have the looks, but his voice and technique are truly first class. Whether in solos or in ensembles, his singing are just right on the spot - not one bit more, nor one jot less. Listening to him sing, you really know why the style earned its name 'bel canto'. The musical lines just simply float with his voice. His Elviro is every bit on par as any other top performer of this role these days. Organasova is no less good vocally than Giemenez. Yes, she is a lyrical spinto, not lyrical coloratura. But her coloratura is so well balanced that you would not hear one bit of jarring tone from her. Also, her voice balanced out well with that of the secondary soprano role sung by Uighur soprano Dilber, who is true lyrical coloratura. Listen to her solo in Act II, and listen how the audience responded with thundering applause. I don't hear any shrillness in her voice in this recording. Rather, it is so light and girlish that you would at once realise that she is a contrasting character with Organsanova's principle role Amina. But she does rise up to the occasion in that single solo aria, demonstrating for once that Lisa is truly jubilant in succeeding to supplant Amina.
The only slight disappointment is the bass role of the Count, who should have been more affecting in the aria of home coming.
The orchesetra and choir are equally good in this performance.
It would have been worth a much more expensive pricing, but for the slightly distant sound.
Gorgeous singing. Bel Canto at its finest .......2006-03-03
Beautiful. Simply beautiful. I was not familiar with this Opera, but was familiar with the beautiful voice of Luba Orgonasova, and simply had to hear more, and found this rare recording, and of course had to own it. Well, it is simply gorgeous. And Raul Fimenez is a tenor who I was not familar with at all, but could not believe the beauty of his singing.
I highly recommend this recording to anyone who loves Bel Canto.
An excellent budget-price recording.......2003-11-22
If I were EMI or DECCA I would be very worried by this recording. Naxos seems to be able to pull together casts of a similar or even better standard and then sell off operas for budget price. All three of the major roles in La Sonnambula call for singers with a high level of Bel Canto virtuosity. The Amina must have a gorgeous legato for her two cavatinas and also a highly developed florid coloratura technique for their cabalettas as well as the ability to pull off stratosphericly high notes. Luba Orgonasova has all these abilities. "Ah non credea mirarti" is bel canto at its most beautiful, but she also has a good dramatic understanding of the work, which is aptly demonstrated by her part in her second duet with Elvino. Luckily her Elvino is the outstanding Raul Gimenez, who copes with the extremely high tessitura well and also has a respectable florid technique of his own. His "Prendi per me sei libero" is stunning stuff. My biggest reservation (and the reason I give this only four stars) is the phlegmatic bass of Francesco Ellero d'Artagna. His attempts at dramatic acting are very much undermined by the generally unpleasant sound of his voice. Papadjiakou is stunning in what is given to her in the role of Teresa, and the Lisa is well-sung if a bit shrill. Alberto Zedda shows a keen understanding of Bellini's marvellous score. Altogether an excellent buy at bargain price.
The best voices I have ever heard.......2003-03-31
It was my first time to hear the voice of Luba Orgonasova, I was stunned by her totally. This opera was simply written for her. Lisa, who was played by Dilber was at least equally good as Luba, for a few moments I thought Dilber overshadowed Luba. I have to admit that it sounds so easy for her to singe the high notes and manipulate the quite difficult technique.
I just love this CD.
A SUBLIME BEL CANTO PERFORMANCE!.......2002-05-13
This live concert performance from the famous Concertgebouw Hall in Amsterdam, under the baton of Maestro Zedda, is how bel canto can triumph but rarely does. Bellini's gorgeous music requires a certain type of interpretation to do it justice. As Elvino, Raul Gimenez is brilliant with sweet tone, soaring high notes, impeccable inunciation and wonderful warmth and expressivity. Luba Orgonosova's Amina is equally outstanding, managing to control her spinto soprano into fragile delicacy when needed. The duets between these two are to die for. The other soloists are adequate; the chorus is outstanding. In the end, the frenzied audience response is the ultimate proof of the excellence of this performance.
Average customer rating:

The title Casta Diva tells all. This recital disc shows soprano Angela Gheorghiu reaching out beyond the lyric Verdi-Gounod-Massenet-Puccini repertory in which she made her name and edging into the gymnastic world of coloratura and bel canto--with some measure of success. Her opening number, the eponymous Bellini "Casta Diva," doesn't show Gheorghiu at her best: the sound is hollow rather than serene and just a touch too fluttery in the vibrato to feel comfortable. But in other arias from La Sonnambula, I Puritani, and Guglielmo Tell, she seems on surer ground--though even here, the fioritura can be rushed and swallowed when it needs to be approached with measured confidence. Of course, the technique is there, as are the eloquence and subtlety--but take this disc as a token of things to come rather than evidence of what has already arrived. That way, you'll be pleasantly surprised as opposed to slightly disappointed. --Michael White

Who knew!.......2007-05-25
When I first listened to this CD, I was rather surprised, much like I was when I first listened to Renee Fleming's Bel Canto CD. I always thought that Gheorghiu was just a dramatic/spinto soprano...it never occured to me that she was anything close to a coloratura...although I think all classical singers should have velocity, even if they rarely call on it. She does surprisingly well with all the melismas...not like sills, sutherland, dessay or gruberova, but she stills manages them quite nicely. I also never knew she had an altissimo range...of course I know that the soprano voice doesn't stop automatically at High C, but you just never think about sopranos such as gheorghiu having D's and E-flats. She weathers her acuti (extreme high notes) well...she sometimes sounds like she doesn't know what to do with them once she is up there, but they sound nice anyway. This CD consists of several fav's such as Casta Diva, Una Voce Poco Fa, Regnava nel silencio/Quando rapito, Qui la voce/Vien diletto...all staples of the coloratura repertoire...and she does some not so famous ones, such as selections from William Tell, The siege of Corinth, and Anna Bolena. A nice mix I would say. Overall, this is an enjoyable recital...you get to hear Gheorghiu singing some of your favorite bel canto arias, and you get to hear her singing entirely different styles than you're probably used to hearing her sing
An interesting entry into coloratura soprano territory.......2007-01-07
This represents a major excursion of soprano Angela Gheorghiu into the world of coloratura. First, what is coloratura in opera? The Wikipedia says: "In the bel canto era, all singers had to be coloratura specialists, that is, they had to be able to add ornamentations to the written music." Ornamentation includes trills, runs, and other vocal effects (such as appoggiaturas and acciaccaturas), many of which leave the listener in awe.
Gheorghiu does not appear to be a natural coloratura soprano. While coloratura technique can be used by any singer from bass to soprano, male or female, we normally think of sopranos in this context. We also normally think of coloratura sopranos as having lighter voices that can reach those high notes and have the agility to command the ornamentation called for. Of course, as I recall, Joan Sutherland, one of the great coloratura sopranos of the 20th century, began as a dramatic soprano (although my memory may betray me). Certainly, the voice of Gheorghiu is darker than a Beverly Sills, for example. But the true test: What about the ornamentation and agility?
In short, my answer is "not bad." Her trills are not great, but some who essay the coloratura repertoire ignore trills entirely (listen to Maria Callas, for example); others stun, such as Joan Sutherland. While Gheorghiu is no Sutherland (or Sills), she is on a higher plane than Callas. She shows vocal agility in traversing some of the prime coloratura territory for sopranos. The cabaletta to "Casta diva" (from Bellini's Norma) is nicely done; just so, the cabaletta from I Puritani, "Vien, diletto," is competently done; she is able to show agility in Rossini's "Una voce poca fa" (from Il Barbiera de Siviglia), although her voice is darker and heavier than many others who take this tune on. The great test on this CD: her rendering of Mad Lucy's "Quanto rapito in estasi" (from Lucia di Lammermoor). This is not Sills or Sutherland. But it ain't bad! In cabalettas such as this, it's not the first time through that is of interest for the coloratura soprano. The first time through, the singer demonstrates that she can hit the notes and has some coloratura technique. It's the second time through, when the vocal pyrotechnics should emerge. And Gheorghiu's second time through features more ornamentation and vocal effects. She takes it up a jot from the first time through this great cabaletta.
In the end, Angela Gheorghiu is not Sills or Sutherland. But there aren't too many at that level to begin with. She does a pretty good job, and the CD is worth a listen. If nothing else, compare current sopranos who essay the coloratura repertoire with predecessors such as Sills and Sutherland. Gheorghiu need not feel embarrassed with her work on this CD.
A definite wobble........2006-05-17
Angela Gheorghiu may very well be 'the next Callas'. Callas' overuse of chest voice and forcing out high notes that aren't comfortably in her range are all here, as well as some additions: poorly executed coloratura, uneven vowelisation, often dodgy tuning, an uneven scale through the voice, unbalanced resonance and a distracting wobble present at various times throughout the recording (there's vibrato, and then there's a lot of vibrato, and then there's a wobble, and this is a definite wobble). And the girl lacks Callas' utterly unique connection to text and drama.
These are beautiful pieces, probably some of the hardest, if not the hardest, written for the soprano voice, for the technique demanded by the bel canto literature is extreme. And Angela Gheorghiu just isn't there. If you want these beautiful pieces sung by a soprano with the technical capacity to sing them beautifully, look up Edita Gruberova. She may not have the astounding breath and support of Dame Sutherland, or the supreme expression of La Divina, whom both have have produced some admirable and recommendable recordings of many of these arie, but she is as good a combination of the two as I can think of in this repertoire.
BRAVA ANGELA!
Good starting place into dangerous territory.......2003-02-21
Angela Gheorghiu is a beautiful woman who happens to have a lovely, dark voice capable of many colors. Her voice is immediately recognizable. She dives head first into this recital of technically difficult and dramatically challenging arias. Some arias are performed superbly. Others need more work. She has good Italian throughout this disc. She is a speaker of the language, so to say that she has bad Italian shows ignorance on the part of the one reviewer who said disparaging remarks about her diction. She does not have intonation problems on this disc. Her "Casta Diva" sounds far too studied and detached. She sounds as if she wants to perform the aria brilliantly in terms of simply pulling it off rather than investing her entire dramatic intelligence into it. The arias from "Guglielmo Tell" and "L'Assedio di Corinto" are performed superbly with a lot of dramatic commitment. Her coloratura throughout is secure, but it does not have the same fluidity that Sutherland and Sills commanded. However, to criticize her good coloratura technique is too narrow-minded. She is not a true coloratura. Keep that in mind. The "Anna Bolena" aria is sung well. The first half is done superbly, but the requisite nostalgia in the second half is missing. She tries, but fails to convince. Her "Una voce poco fa" is sung brilliantly, but without any charm or wit. It is too bad. The arias from "La Sonnambula" and "I Puritani" are sung nicely, but the high E's are not really secure. She needs to work on those notes. She also lacks a real trill. Her "Lucia di Lammermoor" excerpt is good, but Sutherland and Sills have sung it better. Sills also sang it with more convincing emotion. Overall, this disc is a good look at what may come from Gheorghiu in the future in the bel canto repertory.
