Created as a benefit project for Artists' Project Earth, an organization devoted to protecting the environment, reversing climate change, and tendering disaster relief, this compilation pairs Western pop stars (U2, Sting, Artic Monkeys, et al) and their hits with all-new arrangements performed by members of Cuba's Buena Vista Social Club plus other Havana-based talent. The overall effect is of a well-meaning but not entirely simpatico mutual admiration society. Coldplay's "Clocks" is a good example; the lead vocal is coolly lethargic, engulfing the spiky crags of the rhythm section like syrup on a waffle. But then, most of the singers sound strangely unconnected to the frisky 1-2-3/1-2 of the clavé beat. The contrast between the two groups of players could have been bracing, and to many ears it perhaps will be, but most of the time, they seem to transmitting from parallel universes. Not surprisingly, the best tracks are those in which hometown icons are left to do what they do best. But the late, great Ibrahim Ferrer's marvelous interpretation of "As Time Goes By" (his final recording) and Omara Portuondo's wistful yet powerful cover of "Killing Me Softly" only serve to further showcase what's amiss with the rest of the album. --Christina Roden

4 out of 5 stars Great spin on contemporary tunes Don't buy the itunes version!.......2007-07-29

If you are going to buy this, make sure you buy on amazon! The itunes version doesn't include all the songs the CD version does.

Buena Vista has done it again. Cold play's and the Jack Johnson tune's are my favorite. The best tracks are the ones where the artist gave the group all the masters separated by tracks allowing these guy to really do their magic. Some songs seem like they just grabed the original version of the song and pasted a Latin rythem on top.

3 out of 5 stars Rhythms Del Mundo.......2007-07-15

It's a good idea and not bad for the effort. The songs while some work very well ,the others were just a good try . I can see what they were trying to do. Anyway it's for a good purpose

5 out of 5 stars Rhythms del Mundo: Cuba.......2007-07-05

I love this CD. Every cut is good. I can clearly appreciate the original artist and the Latin beat at the same time. I am so pleased to have a CD that every cut is good and I don't have to stop what I am doing in the cafe to skip a cut when the player is on scramble.

4 out of 5 stars Great Salsa/Pop Fusion CD.......2007-07-04

The fusion of well known pop artists (ie; U2, Coldplay, etc.) and Buena Vista Social Club totally works on this great CD.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing...buy something else.......2007-06-01

This is disappointing...a few of the remakes are ok. Some cuts are intolerably poor. The overal quality is poor and it is not as advertised.

Album Description

Songs of THE BEATLES…with a Cuban TWIST.

Here Comes…el Son merges the spirit of The Beatles with the soul of Cuban music. It offers Beatles fans a rare bifocal musical experience: familiar Fab Four tunes rendered in grassroots Afro-Cuban rhythms. This musically rich CD also presents the music enthusiast with an exotic compilation of songs of the most famous Rock 'n Roll group in the world in styles never heard before.

HISTORICAL FACTS
Banned in Cuba during the early years of the revolution, Beatles music managed to break through and establish a following that endures to this day in Cuba. HCES emerges from that following as the FIRST record of Beatles songs played in traditional Cuban musical rhythms. It is also the FIRST record performed in English by Cuban musicians residing in Cuba.

4 out of 5 stars More substance than not.......2005-04-21

I was surprised by this album overall, as there were new takes on classics. Some do fall a little flat for my taste. But the simple act of recording it and paying homage to the brits was revolutionary if you believe the history behind this. Some cuts are a bit abrupt, as the syncopation and melodics seem to work against each other in a frenzy of forced rhythm that is neither here nor there. But when they get it all together it's magical. A good effort, original... with the heart in the right place and the harmonies do it justice. Only a couple may trascend the original. I'll never think of hello, goodbye the same way again. And here comes the sun glows with the light of a caribbean sunset, with the strumming of the "tres". While And I love her gains a wistful sweetness.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2004-08-23

Very warm, thoughtful and enjoyable. A gem. Has a "sad" longing sound, the players must really want to be in Havana -without Castro- to have inadvertely influx that sadness in their adaptation's dna.

5 out of 5 stars A must have for Latin Music Lovers!!!.......2004-03-04

As a musician and a Lover of the Beatles and Latin Music, This
CD adds style and Flavor to several popular Beatle songs.
From the upbeat Afro drums of "Hey Jude", to the romantic blend of percussion in "And I Love Her" to the a capella rendition
of "Because" {all sung with a really nice Spanish accent}

The Beatles captured the sound of a generation, this CD caputers
the soul of that sound through diverse Latin arrangements.

This is truly a valuble part of my muisc collection.

5 out of 5 stars Simply excellent........2004-02-17

Although making versions of already famous songs guarantees success, these musicians have paid due respect to them by accompanying the lyrics with beautiful arrangements. You'll be delighted.

2 out of 5 stars Cuban Cheese.......2003-05-14

I'm usually a fan of "tribute" CD's, unfortunately I found this one to be a disappointment. A few of the selections have interesting rhythmic and acappella arangements, "Because" and "Hello Goodbye". But most of it just comes accross as rather cheesy. It sort of sounds like a Carribean cruise ship band recorded this. It could use a little more edge. Where's Ry Cooder when you need him?

Album Description

These recordings of Santería drumming and singing rituals feature four Cuban Santería groups calling the gods (orishas) by performing rythmic sequences called orus. Recorded in the Cuban provinces of Matanzas and Havana City in 1983-1984, these ceremonies and drums have their roots in the ancient Yoruba religion of Africa and are rarely heard outside of Cuba. Notes in English and Spanish. 24 tracks.

"A music at once raw and elegant, powerful and subtle." -Miami Herald

4 out of 5 stars Music for Ritual Use.......2000-11-18

The liner notes which are written in Spanish do not provide a person who is not familiar with Santeria with enough details. The intiates in the various houses of worship are secretive about thier specific rituals. Because the "Seven Powers of Africa," are well known in Cuba outside of the Lukumi devotees, the music is offered as a type of ethnomusicology recording for outsiders. If you are working with a specific Orisha in front of your Altar put this CD on and chant with the sacred drummers. This CD can aid worshipers in asking the spirits to come down. It is like a Gospel record for a Baptist.

5 out of 5 stars straight from the source - invaluable.......2000-06-16

5 out of 5 stars Accessible Learnable Sounds - Layers of Them!.......2004-12-20

Mr. Johns' has a very accessible way of presenting the sounds and layers of rhythms to the untrained ear. One can get sense of accomplishment with one seession. I have given this CD away twice and am glad to be ordering it a 3rd time. Very engaging and fun for one or more people. jc- Durham, NC

4 out of 5 stars good overview of African and Cuban rhythyms.......2000-03-25

This CD will have you drumming along the first time you play it. The rhythyms presented are both simple and at the same time very complex because of the layering of different instruments. While there is not any teaching of technique (how to strike the instruments) it does make you feel like a drummer. Buy it if you want some feel-good drumming.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD to learn rhythms from around the world........1998-07-04

This CD is a great learning vehicle for beginner to intermediate afro-cuban hand drummers. The songs are repeated on the CD, once with Geoff Johns explaining and again without explanation for ease of playing along. Very well done. I recommend have some hand drumming experience before trying this CD.

        Product Description

The acoustic, up-close sounds of traditional instruments from the high mountains of Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, northern Chile and Argentina is the signature sound of Chaskinakuy's Edmond Badoux and Francy Vidal. Cosecha, the duo's second recording, delivers an Andean harvest of compelling melodies and infectious rhythms played on a wide array of native flutes, strings and drums. Heart-fluttering love songs and courtship dances, earth-rooted agricultural melodies, joyful festival themes, and neo-traditional compositions express Andean musical culture in its glorious diversity.

5 out of 5 stars Cuban Blues, has come a long way!.......2005-08-19

This is one of the first CD's that blends the true Cuban folklore and the American blues, it's amazing how much both have in common. The compositions are very good; they remind me of a group back in the late 60's and early 70's from Tampa Florida "Blues Image" They were the first to combine Cuban music with the American rock. Also Pablo Menendez (from Mezcla) played with Carlos Santana once, and some of the Santana sound is reflected here. Apparently this is what the Santana Band would have sounded like if they would have continued together! Even Carlos Santana in an interview with the San Francisco Examiner stated that Mezcla was his favorite band from Cuba. Another individual who is bringing Latin rhythms into the blues is John Mayall and the New Blues Breakers Band. Any way if you like to experiment with Afro Cuban Jazz & Blues this is a good CD to start with. I recommend the following bands: Blues Image, Papo's Blues(from Argentina)Rock band, Cubanismo in New Orleans(Mardi Gras Mambo),Charlie Musselwhite(Continental Drifter),John Mayall(Padlock on the Blues and Stories),Benites & Nebula (Night Life),and of course the first three albums(Santana,Abraxas,Santana III) from the original Santana band, you will not be disappointed!

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Solid Collection of Lesser Known Artists & Renditions.......2006-04-24

This is a nice roundup of some lesser know tracks and/or less known artists covering well-known samba tracks.

If you have a couple hundred samba CD & records, then you might add another star to this review since you do get a lot of tracks on CD that is probably hard to find even on LP.

If you're just an average samba fan looking to add to your collection, you should put this series on your list but only after you've acculmulated a couple hundred other samba discs first.

It's nice, interesting and pleasant overall. But the "must have" to "pleasant listening" ratio for most average listeners is not high enough to rank this disc as EXCELLENT (4 stars) or CLASSIC - MUST OWN (5 stars). It's good. It's solid but it's not amazing.
