By 1994 the Beasties had settled into their cultural role as the grand arbiters of cool, and Ill Communication is pretty much a catalog of coolness: live funk, a bit of hardcore, ingenious samples of obscure records, keyboards by analogue master Money Mark, guest shots by Q-Tip and Biz Markie, MCA's cop-show metal number "Sabotage," and the inevitable cascade of witty old-school rhymes. But it's also a surprisingly mature record from a band that had, after all, been at it for 12 years already. Arguably their greatest album ever.It's has so many different musical styles it's unbelieveble.Many consider Check Your Head a better effort but this is as good as they ever got.This album gets my personal vote for best album of 1994.

I know what you're thinking. "Eggplant giving a hip-hop album not only higher than one star, but FIVE?!?" People, people. This is not just a hip-hop album. "Ill Communication" offers not only GOOD hip-hop, but funk, punk, rock, jazz, fusion, et cetera, in one fresh-sounding album that's always good to listen to. This just might be my favorite Beastie Boys album (and I have all but "To The Five Boroughs").

It may be eleven years old now, but "Ill Communication" may as well have been recorded yesterday. It doesn't sound dated at all. The hip-hop songs, like all of the Beasties' work, is actually damn good and fun (Good rap! Who'da thunk it?), with catchy samples and beats (check out the infectious flutes in "Sure Shot" and "Flute Loop", not to mention that funky bassline in "Root Down"), you also get some nice, mellow instrumental numbers ("Ricky's Theme", "Bobo On The Corner", et cetera), two energetic punk songs ("Tough Guy" and the humorous "Heart Attack Man"), and all kinds of other assorted influence, here in one nice little package... let's not forget the album's biggest hit, the rocker "Sabotage", with its memorable music video.

Buy it if you're sick of the Kayne Wests of the world. No wonder I listened to the old tape I had of this so religiously back in seventh grade.

The most eclectic album I've heard in years, and the best........2005-11-02

I came to beastie boys on the back of vague recommendations from a mate, not knowing what to expect. Initially, i got licensed to ill, which i enjoyed for what it is, but it was not the stuff i had been recommended. I moved to check your head, and was pleasantly surprised at songs like pass the mic, so what'cha want, live at pjs. Since then, I have been ABSOLUTELY blown away by this album. There is no other album i know of that combines punk-rock, metal, acid jazz, funk, world beats, and hip-hop, in the same album, sometimes even in the same song. And it makes for a great mix.

Not only is this album a great mix of styles, but it is produced crisply, with the vocals mixed down slightly to become an accompaniment to the rest of the instruments, synths blending seamlessly in and out of the music, and the tribal beats laying the foundation for some great songs. The beasties manage to record and mix accordingly for the style of each song style they attempt.

And they attempt a lot. Songs like 'The Update', 'Futterman's Rule' are a psychedelic funk-fest, with tribal world beats as a backbone,synths everywhere and funky guitar licks, i cant help but love them. Songs like 'Sabotage' and 'Heart Attack Man' make for a change of pace, with great punk metal riffs, and fast heavy drum beats. My personal favourite simply for its ingenuity and awesome sound is flute loop; who else but the Beasties could take a folk sounding flute riff, and bring it into the hip-hop world with funky beats, mad scratches and mad lyrics? No one, thats who.

Ultimately, there is something here for a fan of every type of music.I recommend this album to anyone who loves funk, punk, hip-hop, or jazz.

The Best of Ambient Music.......2005-10-22

This is the sort of rare CD that you can turn on, set "repeat CD" and not touch it for the day; or even for days! I have had this CD for many, many years... and it has never lost its appeal. PS: This is NOT "upbeat" jazzy ambient; but, mellow "calm you down" ambient. Each track is unique.

Most of the tracks on this album are very good, but Lydia by Tim Story is special. It is one of the most hauntingly beautiful pieces of music I have ever come across.

A tapestry of earth and music..........2002-09-06

This is a marvelously moving album to experience. While all the artists are different the album flows together very nicely. It moves along at its own pace, far far different than the pace of much of the everyday world in which we live. It is mellow and is not something you actively listen to although over time the melodies become quite clear and, oddly enough, captivating even exciting, though on a different level.

Play it in the background or play it in the car and suddenly an entirely different ambience is created. It's a beautiful work. I never tire of it and it embraces whatever mood I'm in and allows it to unfold in a rhythm all its own. You won't regret it a bit.

Path for yoga, for relaxation.......2000-10-16

As a Yoga instructor and artist I am constantly seaching for that special flow- that music that you consciously hear as you begin yoga or meditation, but has the ability to disappear into the recesses of your mind as your awareness attunes to a different level. Path invokes relaxation. It is fast enough to use in anything involving movement, yet not so fast you feel hurried in any way. I am not sure that it would be slow enough for pure meditation. Every musical creation on this CD is different, yet it flows seemlessly. I also bought YogaZone, Music for Yoga- it was good-a few shared artists- but nothing compared to Path. If you are looking for a complement to your yoga, or want some music to create a relaxed atomosphere this is it!

A Jewel in the Pile.......2007-05-16

I must apologize. I had blinders on. I thought that Tangerine Dream, Biosphere, John Serrie, Robert Rich and Steve Roach were the only ambient kids on the block worth listening to. Wrong. Upon Amazon.com's "Customers who bought Biosphere also listened to:" recommendation, 76:14 popped up, and I thought yeah, yeah the usual guys trying to make it big. And then I gave it a listen with the sample tracks, and I thought, Wow! Just when I thought I had my ambient selections nailed down.

76:14 is a compilation by Dedicated that is nothing short of glorious. Smooth, flowing synthesized rhythm's peppered with deep, reverberating pings instill a wonderful sense of openness, of the vast expanses of space or a wide open field. This is just what I am looking for after a hard day, because it helps me to relax, daydream a little and inspire me while I write. There is a perfect mix of laid back, long segments not unlike Chuck Wild's "Liquid Mind" series (which I highly recommend, by the way: IV [Unity] and VI [Spirit]), followed by mellow but solid club mixes with tinges of hip-hop beats, then an excellent surge of sonic crescendos in major chord ranges of the middle octaves. The tracks on 76:14 are humbly named only by the length of their duration, hence Track One is "4:02," Track Two is "14:31" and so on up to Track Nine, "12:18". I consider this the single best ambient recording ever made, just for its brilliant variations and technical proficiency without "too many notes." This album just bumped Biosphere's "Substrata" (1997) and all my favorites by Steve Roach ("Dreamtime Return"; 1988) down another notch. Variety, quality and replayability are what set 76:14 apart, and make it a definite keeper. I just got a new anchor.

I suppose, since music like this is so hard to describe sometimes, that if you took the best work of the artists I previously mentioned, you'd have this album. It sounds so much like Tangerine Dream's older work, yet not too much, blended very nicely with a little Biosphere, Steve Roach and a twist of Kevin Braheny, with a dash of Robert Rich and a tinge of Patrick O'Hearn. I could definitely hear a little Klaus Schulze in the mix. But to say that 76:14 is a copycat album is just off the mark. This great ambient recording truly makes me feel that I am in the 21st century, and not stuck in the same commercial tinkly-winkly crankings-out of the 1980's. Nice. Very nice.

Did they remake Risky Business?.......2006-05-30

It's interesting to me that Tangerine Dream and song 8:07 were mentioned in an earlier review because when I first heard 8:07/5:23, I thought they were tracks from Risky Business that I had not yet heard or remixes of ones that I had.

Having said that, this is still a pretty good CD. I've always liked 14:31 and 4:14.

Ambient Stand Out.......2006-04-09

This album makes it to the top of my ambient music collection. It even replaces Ishq "Orchid" which held the #1 position since August 2004. If you are looking for an instrumental ambient CD that you can relax to or take a mental journey with, this is the one. I sometimes put the headphones on at work to block out the co-workers and listen or pop it in the CD player on the way home to unwind.
My favorite tracks are 14:31, 9:39, and 12:18. The liner notes reveal that the band didn't want to bias your listening experience by naming the tracks. Definitely a sentiment I agree with.

Several Imitated Styles.......2006-04-07

Brian Eno, the undisputed father of Ambient music described it this way, "Ambient Music must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting." Global Communication has certainly produced some music that incorporates the style of Ambient music on several tracks. The missing element is interest. GC has taken some subtle melodies and looped them with a few electronic flourishes tossed in here & there that were probably intended to cause some interest but just sound like gimmicks. The other tracks that incorporate beats are obviously not Ambient but pure Electronica with a strong Tangerine Dream influence. Here again GC falls way short of the mark. In the track 8:07 the synth pattern is generated early on and continues with almost no interesting change. Where Tangerine Dream would have built on that pattern and expanded to some kind of melody, GC drops in maybe 3 notes & repeats them over and over. Not only isn't it interesting, it borders on tortuous. I'm not going to give a list of all the people that have done this much better. Do your own research. If you're content with believing that this is great music in this genre then it's your loss.

This is the type of CD you can kick back and listen to and just let your thoughts go. I love what GC puts together as the "Mark and Tom show," and the sounds they create are just mesmorizing! Next to PM, this CD is at the very top! One hell of a mix!! Thanks guys....

Fresh.......2007-07-16

I've purchased other CD's by Lynne Arriale, and I recently purchased "Come Together." I've found all of her CD's to be entertaining, but this one really touched me. I normally am circumspect when a performer writes their own stuff. (I realize that they can't keep playing the standards, but still . . . ) But when I heard "Home" I think I melted on the spot. I literally became entranced by it. The emotion that Lynne and Jay and Steve put into this song. Breathtaking. The song really captures for me what the word "home" means. Then, compare this song with "Braziliana." The calm and serenity of "Home" is replaced by some truly gifted, and frenetic, piano work in "Braziliana." This song is hot.
But the reason I purchased this CD in the first place was because of "Red is The Rose." I love this song, and I've heard thousands of versions of it. I think Lynne nailed the real feeling of this song. Simply beautiful.
I think the trio format is intersting. So much music today is overproduced, and the emotion gets left behind in all the hub-bub. With just a trio the music comes to the forefront, where it belongs.

DAYTON SAYS: BUY THIS CD.......2004-12-01

Every so often the Lynne Arriale Trio goes to work and creates a jewel that we can carry in our hearts. I'm not sure if this CD is a ruby or a diamond, but I do know it is beautiful. If you have never purchased a CD by the Lynne Arriale Trio, and you truly love music, do something special for yourself and buy this CD...buy all of their CDs.

Lynne did three sets at the 2004 Monterey Jazz Festival in, in my humble opinion, the perfect setting for her music, a small(circa 250 seats)darkened room, and the experience was mesmerising. She communicates feelings and emotions magnificently via beautifully crafted and performed compositions, most of which are original. I bought this record afterwards as she had played most of the tracks. Sit at home with the lights low and you will not experience a better jazz pianist.

The only major Rodgers and Hammerstein show not to have had a major Broadway revival, South Pacific receives its first complete recording, capturing 107 minutes of classic songs as well as reprises and underscored dialogue. Given the thankless task of succeeding Mary Martin of the original Broadway cast is the wonderful Paige O'Hara (Disney's Beauty and the Beast, John McGlinn's Show Boat), full of sass and spunk as Nellie Forbush. Although this Emile De Becque, Justino Diaz, isn't actually a Frenchman (but hey, neither was Ezio Pinza), his accent is only a faint distraction from his rich voice. Filling out the cast are tenor Sean McDermott as Lt. Joe Cable and Pat Suzuki (Flower Drum Song) as Bloody Mary. It's a very good recording, and an easy choice for anyone who wants the complete score. The only drawback is that, unlike other JAY Masterworks Editions, this one doesn't include extra songs, such as "My Girl Back Home," a song cut from the original production but restored for the 1958 film. --David Horiuchi

Great complete recording.......2004-07-19

In reply to M.Clegg's contention with regards to the status of the stars of this great complete recording, I would like to point out that all the main leads, Justino Diaz (New York City Opera Production), Paige O'Hara (Australian production), Sean McDermott (The Pace Production - USA) and Pat Suzuki (Long Beach Light Opera Production) have all played their respective roles on stage in various productions. This is clearly listed in the booklet of the recording. On the contary, I find their interpretation to be vivid and compelling. A great recording.

Complete but not Perfect.......2004-07-16

As with the complete recordings of Guys and Dolls and The Pajama Game, this double CD brings together the full score including uncut dance-breaks and incidental music. The orchastrations are fantastic but, like the others in this series, the cast suffer due to the 'studio' nature of the recording. There is little of the vibrancy and excitment of a Broadway Cast Recording because the cast are only singing the roles and have probably never seen the script at all. This means that many of the performances, while technically good, are characterless.
Paige O'Hara, excellent as the voice of Disney's Belle, plays the part a little too twee - yes, I know Nellie is a hick but she goes too far in that direction. Justino Diaz, as Emile, has a good voice that does not cover the lack of a personality. The rest of the cast are equally too note-perfect.
The people who will find this recording the most useful will be people, like myself, who are performers. When performing in a production of South Pacific this CD was very useful, more for the not-available-anywhere-else material than anything else. The dance music and the incidental stuff is useful to rehearse with.
On the whole, a worthy CD for the completist but if you want a more character-driven recording, search out one from an actual stage performance.

Ah...the memories. I remember this musical with fondness because it was the first musical that I had the honor of playing in the pit band for. Out of all of the South Pacific soundtracks, I love this one the most because it includes every song in the score (I checked)!

What you're looking for.......2006-10-12

To say that Figurine makes self-aware music doesn't quite do their songs justice. It'd be more accurate to say that Figurine makes songs about self-aware music. Heavier, and slightly less refined, than their second main album.

Wonderful Campy Synth-pop.......2006-06-16

I agree with everything everybody else said, but it's not super absolutely spectactularly amazing -- it's just really good. Some songs are better than others and the good songs really are spectactular. "Eurodiscoteque" and "New Millenium Song" are stand outs. "New Mate" reminds me a lot of Gary Numan but the campyness sounds a bit more tame 20 years later. It's not as innovative nor as good as their second album as it relies on synth pop conventions to flesh out the songs rather than the post-Mouse On Mars-ish computer distortion and polished edits(?). But it's quite fun. Also, compared to their second, it sounds like a bunch of singles as opposed to a cohesive album. Reccomended to those who like synth-pop and twee type boy/girl vocals.

Their humor and simple sohpistication is endearing and just plain satisfying. There's something about the call and response lyrics, fake Euro-accents, robots and modem sounds that set them apart from the other electro-clashers. I am forever grateful to the friend who gave me this album. The second album 'The Heartfelt' is more mature and eclectic, but the lyrics are still along the same mushy themes. (...). I think I may love it even more the T+C=L. *Also - does anybody know what happeded to their site and any news of a new album?!? Somebody - include that in a review! I really need a new Figurine fix!

Figurine is absolutly fantabulous...if you dig synthpop, you'll dig this album. It's poppy, emotional, has great electronic backgrounds, and is just an all around great album. Truly synthpop for the masses!

Surprisingly Good!.......2007-05-26

The songs are good. Nothing super great or classic memorable, but pleasant to listen to. There are comments made by two other people with whom I concur: That he overdoes it with the vocoder, and that this is the album Kraftwerk should have put out instead of Tour De France Soundtracks.
By the time this CD came out (2003), the sound sounds contemporary, even a little dated. This is a shame, but a fact. I truly wish he had released this 10 years ago. Ralf and Florian would not have taken so long between albums, beating Tom Schultz at the game of "perfection". Recommended.

Bartos keeps the vision alive!.......2007-04-07

I wish Bartos could have stuck out longer with the Kling Klang Guys... but then again, Bartos alone has his distinct flavor and approach to the compositions and sound treatments. This album is so delicious! Bartos really kept the phat tones alive from his past days with Kraftwerk and incorporates some new textures too on this great collection of songs. After seeing the transformation of KW after Bartos' exit, I'm realizing that Bartos may have been the "HEART BEAT" of KW. The vocoder really works well and his old school drum machine still pounds out the measures. The innocense of the lyrics/subjects are still there and he infuses catchy melodies with out-of-this-world synth voices, although resorting to bland transition chords like in "Electronic Apeman", just slightly killing the flow of wonderful group of measures.
I wished he had access to Marnie and Aroyo of Ladytron or a female voice to some of the tracks... So what's the deal with these technopop gurus? Why not pump out records like mad ?!?!

The album Kraftwerk should have made instead of "Tour De France Soundtracks".......2007-02-24

Just as Kraftwerk were readying their first album in twenty years ("Tour De France Soundtracks), Karl Bartos released his first "official" solo album, Communication. Ask most Kraftwerk fans which album sounds more like classic Kraftwerk, the answer is, maybe not surprisingly, the Karl Bartos release.

Bartos is a classically trained percussionist who played electronic drums in Kraftwerk, but he also received songwriting credit on some of Kraftwerk's most enduring compositions. Listening to "Communication" and "Tour De France Soundtracks" side by side, it doesn't take a genius to see Bartos was the man behind the beautiful melodies of "Neon Lights", "Computer World", "Computer Love", "Tour De France", and "The Model," and I speculate he also wrote the lead synth melody of "Europe Endless" (although he doesn't receive a writing credit).

And melody is why this album succeeds: "Communication" is loaded with beautiful melodies and some great singing from Bartos. It's unfortunate that he let the "computer voice" (it's not a vocoder!) sing so much on this album, as he's got a very enjoyable voice. Hopefully he'll sing more on his next release...

Excellent ex-kraftwerk.......2006-03-24

This is an excellent album by Karl Bartos from Kraftwerk. Very well performed electronic music. OK maybe a little too much use of the Vocoder but otherwise excellent.

Karl has still got it!.......2004-01-19

Karl has, over the last 10 years, been able to express his individual musical talent through solo and coproduced albums, rather than have his skillful, clever and slightly cynical musica creations placed over the tall-standing umbrella of Kraftwerk.

Following up from his albums released under the band name of Elektric Music/Electric Music, Karl has graced us with an album full of groaning, throaty bassy synthesizer tracks, combined with funky pop songs and effects laden musical journeys. His (somewhat overused) vocoder thrusts out lyrics related to the premises of communication, with tracks such as Im The Message, Im The Camera and Ultraviolet sending a slightly disguised and quite funny message about modern society and its use of communication such as means as advertisments, photographs, ect.

I wont compare Karl's music to Kraftwerk as much as many people do, but you can certainly feel the underlying precision and simple but catchy tunes that tends to be very valuable to the structure of Kraftwerk's music.

If you enjoy electronica, or simply would like to hear what a great master of electronic music can produce, dont give Communication a miss!

And if you enjoy this album, make sure you take a look at Karl's earlier effort, Esperanto (under the title of Elektric Music) as these two albums are quite similar in style, although i feel that Communication has a better level of refinment and focus.

Dont deprive yourself and order a copy of Communication now!
