Customer Reviews:
Probably the best compilation of a single composer's works. Ever!.......2007-05-06
Claude Debussy is perhaps the most understated composer in the history of man. His ability to compose both on the piano and for orchestra is unmatched, in my humble opinion. The fact that Debussy was able to also arrange many contemporary and previous composers' works just adds to his resume. He had a gift, pure and simple.
Although this album doesn't (well, honestly it couldn't) contain all of Debussy's catalog, it does certainly contain some of his best work. There is actually only one track on this CD that I don't care for; that would be Golligwogg's Cake-Walk; it is just a bit annoying to me.
Beyond my dislike for that one track, the entire CD is a beautifully aranged, beautifully played, well recorded compilation with good sound mixing and it is a respectful tribute to a truly great composer.
"Claire de Lune" (Moonlighting) is perhaps one of the most gorgeous pieces of music ever composed; this is the orchestrated version, which I prefer, but the piano version is nice. "Arabesque No. 1" is superb. "Fetes" is both haunting and airy. "Reverie" is the best piano piece I have ever heard. "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair" is also a wonderful piano piece. "The Sunken Cathedral" is dark and mysterious, a true wonder.
The rest of the album is fantastic. Listed above are just my personal favorites from the disc. I listen to this CD at least once a week, but often more. It is perfect for relaxation, for listening while reading, or for my personal favorite use, to block out noise while I am writing.
I would recommend this to any classical lover.
If you have not heard Debussy's music, you must get this CD; it will have you ordering more of his compositions almost immediately.
The man was a genius.
I would also add that if you enjoy this, I recommend that you continue your Debussy experience with the following: Debussy: Orchestral Works I and Debussy: Orchestral Works II
This is a brilliant assembly of Debussy. .......2006-07-08
After listening to his "Greatest Hits," I know why he is considered one of the best.
THIS IS THE STUFF RIGHT HERE!.......2005-09-12
I BOUGHT THIS BECAUSE I WAS TRYING EXPAND MY HORIZONS, YOU KNOW? CULTURALLY AND MENTALLY, YOU KNOW? SERIOUSLY THOUGH I WAS IN THE SHOP AND I WAS HAVING A GAZE AROUND THE PLACE AND THEN THIS PICTURE JUST JUMPS OUT AT ME, AND I PICKED IT UP AND IT WAS THIS DEBUSSY CHAP AND ID HEARD ABOUT HIM ON THE BBC LEARNING ZONE SO I THOUGHT ;why not?; SERIOUSLY THOUGH I DRAGGED IT HOME AND I POPPED IT IN THE OLD CD PLAYER AND IT FLOORED ME.......I MEAN SERIOUSLY THIS THING...AMAAZING STUFF..I MEAN TODAYS MUSIC HAS NOTHING, NOTHING NOTHING ON THIS STUFF RIGHT HERE.
SOME GOOD TRACKS ARE:
TRACK 1 IS THE BEST. THE OPENING FLUTE ON THE TRACK IS TOTALLY CHILLED AND COOL, REMINDS ME A BIT OF TRACK 13 ON ILL COMMUNICATION BY THE BEASTIE BOYS...A COINCIDENCE???
THE ONLY WEAK TRACK ON THE ALBUM IS TRACK 6, THE UNFORTUNATELY TITLED "CHILDRENS CORNER SUITE: GOLLIWOGGS CAKE WALK" THE MUSIC IS JUST DATED MAN, JUST AS DATED AS THE TITLE.
OVERALL THOUGH THIS IS A QUALITY ALBUM, WITH CHILLS, SPILLS AND THRILLS. SERIOUSLY THOUGH A FINE EFFORT.
Debussy is the best. Ever........2004-07-23
I love Debussy and all of his brilliant work. I barely listen to any other classical music, so I am not an authority, just an honest lover of music. I play piano and love piano music, so I was not disappointed at a piano Flaxen-Haired Girl. I've never heard an orchestrated version and don't need to. This is a good introductory CD to Debussy's work, I love it! The only thing I don't care for is the Arabesque #1 (Track 9). The horn is kind of grating and clunky to hear in such an otherwise beautiful piece. Still, its interesting and different. Everything Debussy made is purest gold.
i am dumb.......2004-07-01
And I'm a doomass because I didn't proof-read my other review and I wrote that Clair de Lune was performed by piano on this disc, which it isn't. Anyway, the piano version is better.

The international crossover success of tenor Andrea Bocelli has spawned any number of imitators on both sides of the Atlantic. But this collection of romantic arias and duets with violinist-conductor Lorin Maazel (who also arranges and helms the London Symphony Orchestra here) proves once again that the classical canon still offers ample room for compelling reinvention without nettlesome pop affectations. In reviving a genre (violin and vocal) largely dormant since the days of Caruso, Bocelli has taken some rewarding liberties with Rodrigo's "En Aranjuez can ta amor" and forged Liszt's familiar Liebestraume No. 3 into "Sogno D'Amore" with new, self-penned lyrics. Maazel's warm, evocative violin obligatos and sensitive, sympathetic arrangements infuse this tenor's showcase not only with unabashed romance, but as their lively romp through Tosti's "Malia" demonstrates, a sense of joyous fun. An album for romantics of all ages and persuasions--and one that gratifyingly demonstrates that crossing over is hardly the same as selling out. Enhanced CD includes a mini-documentary with comments by Bocelli and Maazel, as well as links to a more comprehensive interview with the tenor. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:
Fine idea, weak execution.......2007-04-26
Lorin Maazel, in the self-indulgent pat on the back that passes for linear notes, manages to make one good point: the tenor-violin duet was once a fine tradition worthy of exploring afresh. As an effort to revive this dusty tradition, this disc is not successful.
Maazel seems to enjoy the feel of the violin under his chin, and generally produces elegant sounds. The orchestration, which he tells us in his notes evolved amidst a hectic schedule of conducting and rehearsing Don Carlo and Don Giovanni, is basic and generally inoffensive. Good thing he tells the listener of his busy schedule, or one would have to be harsher with his sometimes dreary musical arrangements.
Andrea Bocelli is something of a controversial figure in some circles. I am a picky listener, and suffer from the maniacal ailments that afflict the opera buff. Still, I have always enjoyed Bocelli's popular recordings. I like pleasant tunes sung by a full, clear tenor voice. Having said this, I find his operatic recordings lamentable.
Though not opera per se, Bocelli sounds over-taxed by the repertory at hand (mostly lovely 19th century songs). Each track is unworthy of comparison with past performances by operatic greats-- Pavarotti, Carreras, Gigli, Di Stefano, and Schipa come to mind. Bocelli's voice is strained, and he offers nothing resembling the grace required by these three-minute masterpieces.
Those who are in love with Bocelli's voice will no doubt enjoy this recording. Still, I strongly urge exploring this repertory as it is presented by far more capable performers, and far better endowed voices.
He's magnificent.......2007-03-12
I thoroughly enjoyed this CD, especially some favorites that I haven't heard in years. I wholeheartedly recommend.
Romantic sounds!.......2007-01-12
Adrea's voice continues to enthrall me! Even if you don't understand Italian, you will enjoy this album. Highly recommended.
Simply beautiful!.......2006-07-09
I wont repeat what others with positive reviews already said. Just know that none of Bocelli's CD's have ever disappointed me, and if you are looking for as fine a piece of work as possible (thus far), THIS and "Romanza" are it.
Average Bocelli at best.......2005-01-20
I bought this Bocelli album because I truly wanted to hear him perform "Plaisir D'Amour," one of my all time favorites. While I do love Bocelli I wasn't completely impressed with the entire CD. This is not the best I've heard from Andrea and his voice is not great throughout the CD. I do enjoy it though. He's one of the few artists I can listen to these days without getting a headache.

I bought this CD for one reason...Bocelli sings "Plaisir D'Amour," one of my absolute all time favorites. This isn't the best of Andrea. His voice is sometimes weak and warbly. That said, I enjoy this CD for easy listening and simply because it doesn't give me a headache.

Ballet Hits.......2007-03-10
Naxos comes to the rescue again, taking two superb out-of-print recordings and reissuing them on its own label. Stravinsky outdid himself when he rescued some lesser known works by Pergolesi and Tchaikovsky and used his own magic to create a pair of memorable ballets. The perfomances are conducted by Robert Craft, one of the composer's closest friends, and could not be bettered. The mid-1990s sound is first class. At Naxos prices, this CD is a real bargain.
Two of Stravinsky's Most Popular Works, Beautifully Done.......2006-01-31
These mid-90s performances of Pulcinella and The Fairy's Kiss (Baiser de la Fée) conducted by Robert Craft were previously issued on Koch International with different couplings. But issuing them together is a good idea because they are two of Stravinsky's most tuneful, most easily assimilated works based as they are on music of earlier composers and they are given sensational readings here. (I will admit that these works are two of my very favorites by Stravinsky.) One immediately thinks of Pulcinella, based on music by Pergolesi and other early Italians, as being brash and witty, and The Fairy's Kiss as elegant. But in fact each of the works has both of those qualities albeit in somewhat different proportions. Pulcinella is often recognized by folks who don't otherwise know the work well when the 'Vivo' movement is played; that's the section with those sassy trombone smears and the mock-melancholic double bass figures. The Fairy's Kiss, on the other hand, taken as it is from Tchaikovsky themes, sounds in spots almost like an echt-Tchaikovsky ballet until Stravinsky does his witty things with meter and instrumentation. Throughout, though, this is music that could not have been written by anyone other than Stravinsky.
Robert Craft has known this music for fifty years and more. He was, as most know, Stravinsky's acolyte and nearly constant companion in his latter years. He is sometimes thought of as a somewhat pedantic conductor, but in actuality he is not so much pedantic as true to his master, observing all there is in the score - rhythm, nuance, balances, dynamics. And in these two works he conducts them with all the juice they contain. These are lovely, artful, sophisticated performances with immediacy and vitality. Although I own Stravinsky's own recordings of these works, I actually think I prefer these performances, not least because they are in modern sound. But also because they don't hesitate to throw in a little cholesterol which Stravinsky tended to eschew.
It should be pointed out that the fine soloists in Pulcinella are the lovely-voiced soprano Diana Montague (who can forget her recording of Gluck's Iphigenia in Tauris?), tenor Robin Leggate and basso Mark Beesley. The brashly vital orchestral playing for Pulcinella is by the Philharmonia. The elegant playing for The Fairy's Kiss is by the London Symphony Orchestra.
You cannot go wrong with this CD.

My own life is behind these recordings.......2007-06-10
I can assure that one of the reason I love music is due to these recordings of Mr. Stokowsky. My father had the record of Scherezade and, though my father was an ignorant about cultivated music, he knew very well what to appreciate. We never argued when I played Beethoven's first symphony so loud, however, he always did when I played Rolling Stones so loud. I adore that he taught me to appreciate Rimsky-korsakov's music as well as Tchaikovsky's Capriccio Spagnolo so young. He was wise, on his way. I can't help to cry for him, listening to Borodin's Palatsovian dances, because, it is great music, and, having into account that I used to love it by Mr. Stokowsky's work, it doubles my crying and my remembrance. He loved the record so much. I love you, daddy.
Don't go for broke unless you're a die-hard Stokowski fan.......2006-09-22
When Stokowski began to make Phase 4 recordings for Decca in 1964, he was already 82, but he hadn't lost his energy or his tendency to shape music in outlandish ways. I mostly love him, but this box set duplicates recordings that can be found on the Cala label, which has been releasing everything Stokowski in the world, and on Decca single CDs if you go to the used market.
I mention this because the whole box set, Vol. 2 in the Original Masters series, continas some forgettable performances, in particular the rhythmically slack Beethoven Sym. 5 and 7, the over-highlighted Schubert 'Unfinished,' and a live Brahms First that seems manic and forced too much of the time. However, if you think of Stokowski having little to offer in the German classics, here is an exceptional Beethoven Ninth, one of the best things from his late career and wonderful in every way.
Decca knows that the crowd-pleasers are the gaudy, multi-miked Phase 4 versions of Scheherazade, as bombastic as you could imagine, and lots of Russian fare, including Stoki's signature synthesis from Boris Godunov. The 1812 Over., by the way, isn't over the top and yet needed to be. Finally, this German-Russian collection contains a thrilling disc of Wagner excerpts, much of it grossly over-miked, but at its core containing very impressive, vital interpretations.
In all, I'd select the Wagner, the Beethoven Ninth, and the legendary Scheherazade as the best things here. Buy them separately or take the plunge for this whole box, your choice.
More Sensational Stokowski.......2005-06-08
It took me a while to purchase this six-disc set in UNI's "Original Masters" series, but I finally did this past weekend. Classical music fans seem to either love or hate Leopold Stokowski (I, of course, love him), and unfortunately much of "Decca Recordings 1964-75, Volume 2" will be old news to serious devotees of the conductor. While I'm not familiar with the complete Decca back-catalog, at least three full discs worth of material have been previously available in the old "Weekend Classics" series -- Beethoven's 5th & 7th, Beethoven's 9th, and the Wagner selections. (I'm pretty sure the Rimsky-Korsakov material on disc five, and the Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky pieces on disc six have been issued prior too.) This is good news for those who came to collecting classical CDs late (like me) because while the Wagner is still available individually, the Beethovens have been fetching absurd prices in the Amazon Marketplace. The only material receiving its first international release is contained on disc 3 -- a Schubert "Unfinished" with the London Philharmonic from 1969 and a rousing live performance of the Brahms 1st with the London Symphony on the occasion of the conductor's 60th anniversary leading that body. The original instruments crowd will surely turn up their noses at these legendary performances, but me, I'll just sit back and listen to some more sensational sounding Stokowski.

Amazon.com essential recording
Though Puccini is one of the composers most associated with Callas, he was not the one closest to her heart. Even the title role of Tosca that showcased her talents so brilliantly (including during her vocal decline) didn't figure among her favorites. You'd never know, though, from this aria collection recorded in 1954--Callas's vocal prime--that was inexplicably overshadowed by her complete opera recordings. Even among the best of singers, aria collections take on a certain vocal sameness; Callas often has a different voice for every character. Her Mimi in La Boheme is all lightness and ingenuousness; the timbre of her Suor Angelica (which she sang onstage only once) has a similar but distinctly different lightness, also conveying a sheltered life. Once in a while one hears signs of vocal fatique, but generally, the flapping vibrato that afflicted Callas's high notes only a few years later is well under control, as she's guided through these selections by her longtime mentor, Tullio Serafin. --David Patrick Stearns
Customer Reviews:
Puccini is made for Callas.......2005-08-29
We all know that The La Divina does not put Puccini among her favorites. But this recording is the best Puccini Suprano recital recording ever. This shows Callas in prime of her voice. As a matter of fact I could agree with other reviewers that this recital overshadows some of the complete recordings she has done. When one listens to In questa reggia no one can deny that Callas is the greatest of them all. For fans who could not afford to buy the Recitals 1954-1969 [BOX SET] and and decides to collect the recital recordings one by one. I strongly suggest to first purchase this one. For me this is the best among the set.
A wonderful recital recorded at the right time.......2004-10-04
Well, Puccini we all know so what's the point? ;) When Callas recorded this first recital for EMI she was in supreme voice and it shows in every aria. Be it Manon Lescaut in her dying aria or Mimi's gentle "Mi chiamamo Mimi". You haven't heard Madama Butterfly without listening to Callas' recording of Cio Cio San's suicide. It'll bring tears to your eyes. Here we have a soprano who could sing both Liu and Turandot, and her recording of "In questa reggia" is way better here than on the complete recording of the opera which she made several years later. My personal highlight is Liu's tearful "Tu che di gel sei cinta" where I finally understand how Liu feels, why she is killing herself to protect the man she loves. (!)
The re-issue of this supreme recital is even better!.......2004-05-20
My review:
This remastering by Callas' first ever recital for EMI is absolutely divine. In even better sound (It is a studio-recording) and stunning presence we can hear Callas' voice as well as never before. The highlights are definitely Manon's "Sola, perduta...", Butterfly's suicide, Tosca's prayer, Turandots "In questa reggia", Lius "Tu che di gel sei cinta", the love-duet from Tosca etc. I believe Callas'first "Sola, perduta..." is absolutely ravishing. Young Callas had such a rich, glorious sound! But not only that, listen how she phrases "No! Non voglio morir!" And "Tutto e finito!" with so much morbidezza and drama! Absolutely sublime! As Butterfly she is more the loving mother than any other Butterfly I've heard before or since, listen to how she phrases "Guardami! Amore addio, addio piccolo amor!". This would melt a heart of stone! I'm also totally floored by her "In questa reggia", this shows why Italy adored her as Turandot in the late forties. She triumphed as Turandot and Norma (!) in the same week at the Teatro Colon! Imagine Nilsson, Turner or Marton doing Norma! Impossible? Well, Callas made it possible. I could go on and on but you get the idea. This his the finest Puccini-Recital ever recorded. And to those who think that Callas lacked the warmth necessary for Puccini's heroines: Listen to the duet from La Boheme, Callas' voice is glowing there, like velvet!

Callas and Puccini - Magical.......2004-05-20
As a singer myself let me express how annoyed and sickened I am by the constant Callas-bashing by this person who keeps posting masty reviews on all her stuff. If he does this once again his favourites will suffer for it, I can play this game too! I love so many sopranos, Callas is my fave but I'm floored by the angelic Mimi of de los Angeles, the fabulous Tosca of Tebaldi, the Lakme of Sutherland ETC. ETC. I'm offended by this ignorant's accusations and lies. This CD, Callas' first ever recital for EMI, is of wondrous beauty. The gentleness in "Si mi chiamamo Mimi", the icy elegance in "In questa reggia", the pathos and morbidezza in her Butterfly and Manon are amazing. And her Lauretta is charming. It's perfectly alright not to like Callas but to start one hate-tirade after the other is tasteless, ignorant and idiotic. If he continues this, his favourites will get their share of bashing, mark my words! Even my patience has its limits!
Amazing but the remastered version is even better!.......2004-05-20
This beautiful recital was recently re-released in a remastered edition. Type Callas Puccini, you'll find it easily.

Highly recommend!!!........2005-10-12
I highly recommend this title to anyone who likes Ricardo Montaner, Classical Music or Ultimately the best of both worlds. This is by far one of the best mixes of all his titles put together. Even people who don't like classical music will enjoy this masterpiece.
Simplemente excelente.......2003-01-03
El sonido que tiene este album, es impresionante. La orquesta que toca le termino de dar los ultimos toques a los excelentes temas del legado de Montaner que hay en este CD.
Versiones espectaculares con una fuerza tremenda.
VERY GOOD.......2002-11-11
Great music for your ears with this new CD from R. Montaner. His voice, much more mature and open, sings along his greatest songs, with the Metropolitan London Symphonic Orchestra which make the songs just perfect. If you are looking for his biggest hits in a new modern style, much softer too, this is it. Do not bother getting the original recordings as the now digitally mastered songs do not sound great because his singing voice and the quality of the recording is just not the same as if it were taped today.
Next level of Montaner.......2002-04-14
I've been a Montaner fan since "Ojos Negros" back in the mid 80's, I used to own the record, believe it or not. This CD takes all the timeless clasics that we, his fans, have made famous and brings them to the next level of music quality. The arrangements are pure and sublime; and his performance contains all the feeling and passion that has made him unique. Whether you're a long time fan like me or somewhat newer to his music, you're going to love this one, I guarantee it.
saludos a ricardo montaner.......2000-09-03

Customer Reviews:
A nice collection of Puccini heroines.......2000-09-22
Puccini loves his heroines and gives them the most gorgeous music in his operas. This very nice compilation album offers all famous arias of Puccini's heroines except "Signor, Ascolta" from Turandot . The singers are very good. All arias sung by Kiri Te Kanawa are from her recital album with Sir John Pitchard, including her signature pieces, "O mio babino caro" and "Ch'il bel sogno di Doretta". Scotto is very moving as Butterfly and Suor Angelica. Her "Tu, tu, piccolo iddio" and"Senza mamma, o bimbo" will break your heart. The weak link here is Eva Marton, good Turandot and Tosca but obviously miscasted as Mimi and Liu. Her voice is too dramatic for these fragile heroines.
Beautiful renditions of Puccini arias.......1999-10-30
These great divas bring out the best in the romantic and splendid music that Puccini composed. The orchestral arrangements are just as they should be and not over done. Overall, a great recording.

An Instant Favorite.......2002-11-03
When I see an opera I always hope for a high "chill factor". That's the way I describe that moment when the singing and music are so beautiful that I get goose bumps and maybe even a tear in the eye. This disc has many of these moments. It's absolutely fantastic. I knew from the first listening that it was going to be one of my favorites. I would highly recommend it. Having seen most of these operas performed in the past, I didn't feel that I was missing anything by hearing the music out of context. I don't have time to sit and listen to a complete opera when I'm at home so I appreciate being able to listen to all my favorite parts.
Outstanding performances, but a bit much.......2002-04-04
The performances on this CD really are truly extraordinary. If you love sopranos (or are a soprano) this would be a great CD for you. A nice little excerpting of Puccini's more popular arias.
That being said, I really think a piece of music by a great composer is best enjoyed in its entirety, and these excerpts lose much of their impact when removed from the opera as a whole, especially when surrounded by other similar pieces. It gets a bit tiresome listening to all that wailing and swooping for 73 minutes.
A great CD if you can't get enough of sopranos singing Puccini arias. If you are a fan of the music, spring for the more complete opera CDs or better yet, go see your favorite Puccini opera somewhere.
GLORIOUS!.......2001-06-10
The voices on this album can only be described as "gorgeous." All the cuts are outstanding and the music literally soars with passion. Fleming, Leontyne Price, Chiara, and all the divas evoke the grand emotions that great arias should inspire in the listener. The selections were obviously chosen to present a thrilling compendium of Puccini's best loved arias. We heard just a couple of selections at a friend's home and I immediately purchased the CD for our music library.
