His fourth and finest solo album is, as the cover shot suggests, Morrisey's idea of hard rock. There's a gritty, glam feel to Mick Ronson's production (check the Ziggy Stardust cop on "I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday"), while the loud'n'rude riffs of new guitarist Boz Boorer banish memories of the Smiths. Best news: for once the songs focus on adult life, not the man's well-documented adolescence. --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars morrissey just fine on his own.......2007-03-09

this is possiblly the best album that has come out of the smiths and morrisseys ventures great form top to bottom

5 out of 5 stars This is one of his top albums.......2006-06-16

Your arsenal is perhaps the most well-rounded of Morrissey's solo releases..everything sounds like it belongs there - quite a departure from 'kill uncle'... Hard rocking numbers like "you're gonna need someone on your side", "National front disco", and the commical "you're the one for me, fatty" are balanced by the slow and more intimate "We'll let you know" and the truly beautiful "seasick, yet still docked". Mick Ronson clearly did a fantastic job with the production on this - maybe Morrissey's best..

4 out of 5 stars GLAMMY.......2006-05-19

A return to form after the rather "tired" Kill uncle but not his best solo album.his most commercially sounding one though.Invest!

2 out of 5 stars At best, Morrissey's worst.......2006-05-02

I find it interesting that this is one of the only Morrissey albums with no lyrics included. It is also one of his weakest albums lyrically. Coincidence? I'm not sure. The lyrics seem rather pointless when compared to some of his other works like "Viva Hate" or his later release "Vauxhall and I". Musically, it sounded more like general, vapid alt. rock than it did anything else. Songs like "Tomorrow" and "We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful" are the highlights of the album, but the rest of it seems to fade away with the passage of time. Believe me, if you want vintage Morrissey, I would not recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars his best!.......2006-04-29

This is MOrrissey at hist best, hands down. It may be one of the most important albums that I own. If you do not own this..then you must. There isnt a bad song on this album. Five stars!

5 out of 5 stars loveliest christmas music ever.......2007-07-18

This is on my playlist all year. I've never heard anything else that so beautifully captures the flavor of Christmas, in a way that brings to mind all of the richness, warmth, simplicity and sanctity of the medieval celebration. The flavor is not secular. This is just like drinking a steaming hot spiced wine in a cabin with a fireplace and a stone church visible from the window, full of meaning and warmth. The singing and instrumentation are really something else.

5 out of 5 stars Great Medieval Music.......2007-01-09

I was looking for something in the way of holiday music that was also medieval and this fits the bill! Most of the tunes are ones I recognized and some I didn't but they were all well done and fun to listen to. A great addition to my holiday music collection!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Medieval Christmas CD--Ever!.......2004-01-01

What a find this remarkable CD is! If you love authentic Medieval music, played with the authentic instruments of its time and sung in the same way that a nobleman's court of the 14th or 15th Century might have heard it--this is the one for you. Beth and Barry Hall, both very gifted musicians, offer the finest collection of European Medieval carols I have yet found, and I have a large collection of the music of this period. A Bravissima performance to be savored all year round. Good Lords and Ladies all, grab this one!

5 out of 5 stars feast of sopngs.......2003-12-19

The best medieval holiday music yet! A trip through time, and so well done. I have listened to many others, and this one rates the best! I am looking forward to their next release!

5 out of 5 stars Very Nice!.......2003-01-15

I have been listening to this album for two Christmas seasons and never seem to tire of it. The instrumental pieces are very well done, beautifully providing delicate, intricate harmonies. The vocal numbers are equally well done. There is a nice selection of songs, some familiar to the modern listener, and some providing a good introduction to medieval music. This is Christmas music for all ages.

5 out of 5 stars SHE'S BACK!!!!!!!!.......2007-07-12

First off i have been listening to adinda since i was in seventh grade and loved the cd. I had to but several copies because when my mom seen the cover for the cd she threw it away (couple times). Then i was dissapointed that her second cd was released overseas and could not get it for several years but when i did i really enjoyed it. Then the second coming came out and thought it was hard!!! The first song was the jam!!! Then on myspace i found her and also found out that she had a new cd coming out and was so excited. I just recently got private show of amazon and have to admit she is at her best, the beats are up to date, she still has the queen sexiness to her and is still keepin' it gangsta!!! I'm glad that the radio don't over expose her music because most radio stations tend to do that. And this cd is a promise that ms adina will b around 4 awhile.

Album Description

World Beat meets Electronica! Oyebo Soul is the genre-bending debut album from Belgian duo Arsenal that incorporates Afro and Brazilian vibes with House, Rock and a dash of Hip Hop. With so many different influences it is impossible to pigeon-hole Oyebo Soul sylistically, but they manage to make it look easy with an album that instantly feels as summery and positive as it is addictive.

Nominated in three categories at this year's ZAMU Music Awards (the Belgian Grammys) for Best New Artist, Best Song (Mr. Doorman) and Best Dance Album, Arsenal are poised to bring their passionate and eclectic rhythms to the rest of the world.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD !.......2005-11-23

I really liked this cd . It has a mellow but upbeat feel with a mixture of brazilian and english. Every track is good.
I only wish there were more tracks.
overall a grat listen for driving or chilling at the house.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended .......2004-08-26

When you mix lush sounds and smart beats, and have them set in a multi-cultured music base with influences from Brazil, African, and Latin America and throw in Hip Hop, Jazz, Pop, and more--well you get the fresh sounds of ARSENAL. A Belgian duo, they have garnered world-wide attention with their creative sound.

This album has tracks where vocals are in Portuguese, English, and other languages. The songs offer genre-bending sounds that can lean to Chill, Dance, Latin, and World and a blend of all of these. Already a big hit "Mr. Doorman" is a commercial-type work. Other cuts are less so, yet are being liked by diverse audiences. An example is "A Volta" where Chill meets Jazz meets Soul/Dance. Co-written with Mario V. Dos Santos, a Brazilian Capoeira teacher, the tune is a fun and magical work that engulfs the listener in thick sounds and waves of Brazilo-Chill grooves. On "Longee" the bass and drums sound like those of a heavy metal band yet the vocals are soul-like, sultry, and very well-done. The female vocals and vocalisms throughout the album are of high quality. It's an interesting contrast--the gut crunching bass and big beats supporting the solid vocals. "Tigerwoods" is going to get some attention. Then on "How Come?" these guys bring in others to make a good sound. There's lots of contributors on the project from DJs, to producers, and musicians from many lands, places, and genres.

The U.S. release has two bonus tracks--"Longee" in a different mix and the 12" version of "A Volta" winds up the disc. This album is a very creative, interesting, and fun listen. This duo is the new century's version of The Euryhthmics...not since has a pair delivered such diverse and creative sounds. A CD that has a bright and forward looking sense. The album is highly listenable and very enjoyable. It doesn't grate on you like some other party/dance discs do. [Very] Recommended fun music.

5 out of 5 stars Music that heats up your body and warms up your heart.......2004-07-13

Although this Belgian duo's first song "A volta" was compiled worldwide on varouis complitations like Café Del Mar,MTV's Chill Out, their first full-cd "Oyebo Soul" was/is especially a national succes and it's a shame that not more people worldwide are aware of this fantasic album. The mixture of afro-brazil-rock-house-hop, as they call it themselves, seems a bit impossible to combine in one record, but when you listen to it, you find yourself dreaming away of far distance shores en nipping of tropic cocktails on this melting pot of warm voices and great music. It may suprise you that the makers of this record are from a country where the weather is often grey and rainy but these Belgians guys are succeeded in heating up my body and warming my heart. Fans of Leftfield, Thievery Coporation, Buddha Bar, Groove Armada, Massive Attack and another great Belgian artist Buscemi, will surely appreciate this fine piece of quality music!

5 out of 5 stars Great CD from a soulful white boy.......2006-12-29

Jon B. along with Robin Thicke are the two most soulful white boys in R&B (sorry Justin and Avery Storm has yet to release his CD). Most Christmas albums are just that and nothing more, however on Holiday Wishes: From Me to You, Jon B. merges the classic sounds of christmas and R&B for an enjoyable listening experience. The first song is an excllent cover of Donny Hathway's This Christmas and the other Christmas songs including Merry Christmas,O'Holy Night and Joy To The World are all top notch. Hold You Down is very contermpoary sounding and shows Jon showing off his excllent tenor. I can't wait to hear Jon's new album in 2007.

5 out of 5 stars On point, again.......2006-12-16

Still by far my favorite R+B singer in the world!!!! I posted a while back on his Stronger Everyday album and have been waiting ever since for something new. This CD is good and will hold me over until his next "real" album comes out. My favorite tracks are "Hold You Down" and "This Christmas". This is a great stocking stuffer this season, and a must-have for Jon B fans. Please pick up this joint!!! Support Jon, and long live great R+B

4 out of 5 stars New music at last :-).......2006-11-25

I was absolutely thrilled to learn that Jon B had some new music out. This disc is a nice mix of the traditional songs that we've all come to love and some original ones. Of course, Jon puts his own spin on the traditional ones and he does not disappoint.

I especially like song number one, This Christmas. Jon's tribute to Donnie Hathaway is ON POINT.

If you are looking for something new to listen to this holiday season, this CD will fit the bill and won't disappoint.

4 out of 5 stars OMG Jon B....Where do I begin...........2006-11-16

Okay,
This cd is very nice and smooth. A very solid r&b soundtrack to complete the holiday season for 2006. The only thing I have to comment is on Jon's new "style" of singing. It's like he is talking more than actually singing which is different from the style that gave him fame back in '95.

"This Christmas"- This Donnny Hathaway classic is hard to be redone....of course I still like the original better but his version is a nice change...

"Hold You Down"- This is the first single of the cd....I was surprised at how he chose to sing it...The best part of the song is the keys in the background which he goes crazy with throughout the end of the song.

"Over Our Heads"- This is a favorite of mine...very soulful and warm....

"Peace on Earth"- Okay, Jon B. I am not sure what to say about how you made me cry when I heard this song. OMG, this song is extremely depressing. It's a homeless bum he gives $20 to.....

"Away In A Manger" - This is nice

"Celebrate Christmas" - I love this song, very nice, makes me want to play it at my own Christmas party filled with alot of alcohol of course...Yes this is a very happy song unlike "Peace on Earth"

"Merry Christmas" - A very acoustic song...nice crossover beat.

"Joy to the World" - Very rockerish....Kind of do not like this song because its a little too all over the place for me....But maybe that's just how the original is too.

"Oh Holy Night" - Very classic, nothing too exceptional to it.

"Santa's On His Way"- My favorite song on here...so fun and youthful...Yeah Jon made me happy on this song...This is how a good Christmas song sounds. Makes me want to go decorate a tree and go ice skating with my girlfriends.

I would of loved to give this cd a 5 since I am such a huge fan of Jon B but wouldn't have been honest with myself. It's only 10 songs long. Only a few songs will get me upbeat for Christmas. And sorry, "Peace On Earth"....that song just stands out like a black plague. Not saying it shouldn't have been included, it is a very deep and powerful song from the own perspective of the artist....It is just well...very depressing.

4 out of 5 stars A good overview of Zorn's soundtrack compositions........2005-10-24

Over the past twenty years or so, John Zorn has built up an enormous library of composition for film, released on sixteen CDs (cleverly titled "Filmworks I", "Filmworks II", and so on...) on his Tzadik record label. For a neophyte, this can be a bit much to tackle, as such, this album, "Filmworks Anthology: 20 Years of Soundtrack Music" has been released to provide an overview of Zorn's soundtrack composition.

As an overview of Zorn's work, this succeeds well. It also appears that another goal was to represent every volume, as at least one piece is drawn from each (volumes VI and VIII get two cuts, I and XII get three, and III and VII get four). Just about everything in Zorn's diverse catalog of film soundtracks is covered-- movies, documentaries, pornography, cartoons and commercials (certainly none I've seen!) are all represented with a suitably diverse array of pieces, from gamelan to string trios to surf rock, Zorn pretty much covers a wide array of sounds and moods-- if nothing else, the diversity of these 28 tracks is a testament to his vast skills to compose in virtually any environment. I could make a few arguments about what cuts I would have picked, but by-and-large, the compilation is a rather good and thorough overview, and the cast of performers is immense, with virtually all key players in the downtown scene involved to some extent or another.

Another notable point about this release is the artwork-- packed in a digipack with a pair of photos of Zorn (one from '86, one from '05) and stills from the various pieces littered throughout the liner notes, it certainly looks great. And speaking of the liner notes, Zorn offers a superb essay on film soundtrack composition and appreciations by musicians Marc Ribot, Anthony Coleman, Jamie Saft and Cyro Baptista (all of whom appear to some extent or another on the music) are included.

I've got currently about half of the filmworks series and I found value in this overview. Several of the individual pieces hold together far better than this recording does, but it certainly does a great job providing an impression of Zorn's diverse film scoring career.

5 out of 5 stars Curious about Zorn?.......2005-10-23

Considering myself a casual fan of John Zorn I have been at times either annoyingly put off or enthusiastically engaged with the diversity of his music. Admittedly, It can be daunting for a Zorn novice to find a suitable entry point in which to begin navigating through the extremities of his musical output. This new collection, which pulls material from the sixteen releases (thus far) of his FILMWORKS series, is everything the curious could want in a well-rounded introduction.

The selections chosen for this disc make for an exhilarating listening experience from start to finish as the focus jumps from one musical genre to the next, from cartoon scores to punk rock to jazz and surf music. Most selections early on clock in at under 4 minutes, with many others zipping by under just one. All these various styles meld together so effortlessly that it's impressive it all comes from a single creative mind.

The packaging is also deserving of mention, as the CD is housed in a fold-out digipack case with two booklets attached inside. In one of these booklets Zorn describes his methods and self-imposed rules in creating music for film (as well as for dealing with snoopy film directors). The other booklet features short essays by a few of Zorn's collaborators on what the creative sessions were like. There are also many photos from the films the music accompanies. (So far the only films I've seen with Zorn's scores are "Trembling Before G-D" and "Protocols of Zion".)

Favorite tracks: "Surfing Samba", "Arsenal Dance Mix", "Shanghai", "Main Title (Invitation to a Suicide)"
Final Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

4 out of 5 stars Attention all Big Black and Naked Raygun fans.......2003-06-25

Arsenal was a project that incredible Naked Raygun/Big Black guitarist Santiago Durango formed in the late '80s. He only recorded two EPs (both combined on this 31 minute CD) before he broke up the band and concentrated solely on being a lawyer for Touch and Go, Steve Albini, and others. Both EPs are important post-hardcore records that show why Durango's one of the most important participants in the indie/noise-rock underground.

If you worship Big Black, then you will be in utter disbelief (in a good way) when you hear the track "Little Hitlers." It's so incredible, you won't believe that it's not a Steve Albini track. Distorted vocals, razor-sharp guitar, mind-nulling bass, and the trademark human-sounding programmed drumming. "When Heads Collide" is another sign that Durango had an even larger part in The Big Black Sound than most give him credit for. The other tracks are solid and honorable.

If you find post-hardcore to be an essential element to life, then you'll enjoy what's on this challenging CD. It's a cool album that fans of Big Black or similar groups like the Jesus Lizard should love. It's too bad Touch and Go let this overlooked release go out of print. (Maybe they're upset with Durango for not winning the BHS case.) If you find this CD, pick it up quickly and count yourself lucky.
