Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2006-08-06

This is a wonderful double CD of fabulous musical numbers performed by theatre greats and directed by a legandary musical director.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the Best.......2005-06-29

First, to the person who criticizes the recording b/c of "Broadway Baby." Daisy Egan (who sings in in this recording) sounds like she's 10 becuase she IS young. She had just appeared on Braodway in Secret Garden and won a Tony for it. It's a joke...Broadway BABY...hello, it's a joke.

In a compilation of songs like this you're always going to have tracks that you prefer over others, but the majority of the renditions in this CD are great. This is simply one of the best collections of Sondheim out there. You get interpretations that span from "classical" (Green Finch), to bordering on insane (Anything Twice). This is to demonstrate how versatile this composer really is.

In my opinion, some of the best renditions are "Not a Day Goes By," "Anyone Can Whistle", "Girls Upstairs Medley," "Losing My Mind/Drive a Person Crazy," and "Weekend inthe Country." Makes me wish I had been there to witness it first hand.

If you love Sondheim and enjoy hearing Broadway performers, get this CD. A great recording.

4 out of 5 stars Inconsistent, but mostly excellent.......2004-03-21

I am sure no knowledgeable person would deny how absolutely perfect all these songs are. However, the performances on this album are extremely inconsistent. It will go from an excellent rendition (Waiting for the Girls medley, Sunday, With So Little To Be Sure Of, Sooner or Later, Green Finch, Send in the Clowns, Pretty Lady) to the weird (I never Do Anything Twice), to the bad (Broadway Baby, Our Time). I still have absolutely no idea how they managed to butcher one of the best songs ever written--Good Thing Going--and turn it into smooth jazz elevator music. Why would they give Broadway Baby to someone who sounds like she's 10? That said, Liza Minelli, Glenn Close, Karen Ziemba, Dorothy Laudon and the "Waiting for the Girls" performers are all very good. And ending with Bernadette Peters and "Sunday" ends the set on a absolutley fabulous note.

5 out of 5 stars "Celebration" is not strong enough a word.......2003-04-30

This review is by Crosley.

I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of "Passion," which was released 3 years after this show. Also, the shows for which he wrote only lyrics are ommited, like West Side Story, Gypsy, etc. Thus, you can find material from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Merrily we Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins.

There are two striking things about this CD (besides the music and performers themselves). First of all, some of the songs are completely stylistically reworked. The most obvious are "Good Thing Going" and "I Never do Anything Twice." Both are traditionally very ballady with a piano accompaniment, but here they have been redone as jazzy tunes. The result is excellent. Such reworkings demonstrate that Sondheim writes music for virtually any style, and in these cases, across several styles. It's a great example of his variety. The other interesting thing is how many songs have overlapping melodies of songs from different shows. Case in point, "Our Time" and "No one is Alone" are sung seperately by the Harlem Boys Choir and Betty Buckley (the original Grizabella in Webber's atrocious "CATS," although Buckley was excellent) respectively, and then combined. Putting these two songs together offer different meanings to each, and the music is only enhanced. Another example, the trio of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "Love, I Hear," and "Live Alone and Like It" are sung in that order, and then the latter two are combined. Again, the meanings of the songs change, this time in an almost narrative style, and offering different takes on love in the same montage. Lastly (at least for this review, there are more), Dorothy Laudon's (the original Ms. Hannigan in Annie) combination of "Losing my Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" is brilliant. Those who are familiar with these songs will wonder how exactly they fit, but trust me, they do. She swtiches back and forth between melodies to create a number that starts poignant and beautiful, and soon moves to become uproariously funny. Both the song reworkings and overlapping melodies of unrelated songs are all for the better.

I recommend this recording to anyone wanting to get better acquainted with some of Sondheim's best work, or those already familiar who want to hear a tour de force of phenomenal music. It has been said that Sondheim is a masterful lyricist (which he is), but lacks real talent for music. This CD is the final proof that such critics are wrong. His music may take a few listenings to get into, contrary to Webber or Wildhorn, but unlike those two, he doesn't cater to the audience. He challenges them to think outside of traditional musical theater in a glorious repertoise of shows that reach for a smarter, more sophisticated form.

5 out of 5 stars A maginificent evening, a magnificent album.......2001-12-16

There's something to be said for the first concert you ever see at Carnegie Hall. I was fortunate enough to have this be my first. This entire evening was devoted to his genius and the performers did not disappoint.

This wonderful double CD shows off the best and brightest of the musical theatre composer and it is, as one person put it, "an embarassment of riches." With songs from his finest works done in amazing arrangements (listen to that harmony in "We Had a Good Thing Going"!) combined with fabulous performers this is a Sondheim lovers delight.

My favorite song is, without a doubt, Dorothy Louden and her wonderful medley of "Losing My Mind" into "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" followed very closely by the recently departed Madeline Kahn singing "Getting Married Today."

A revue created for the Whitney Museum's Composers' Showcase series (and sometimes known as You're Gonna Love Tomorrow), A Stephen Sondheim Evening collects songs with music and lyrics by Sondheim in a live 1983 concert featuring a top cast of Liz Callaway, Cris Groenendaal, Bob Gunton, George Hearn, Steven Jacob, Judy Kaye, and A Little Night Music's Victoria Mallory, with a special appearance by Angela Lansbury. While many of the songs were somewhat obscure at the time, they're rather familiar decades later, including selections from 1954's Saturday Night and outtakes from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. And though the Fender Rhodes sounds dated, the cast and the performances are excellent. Callaway's "What More Do I Need" is still definitive, and Sondheim himself accompanies Lansbury's "Send in the Clowns" and leads the singers on "Old Friends." --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars By no means bad!!!.......2005-01-04

I like this Sondheim Revue. The performers are good, and I appreciate that they don't try to be "clever" with Sondheim's music. They just performs it as it is written.

The orchestrations are...well...slim. But the synths aren't disturbing, except in Miles Gloriosus.

Otherwise some rare SJS gems are included here. And Angela Lansbury's Clowns is one of the few versions of this song worth listening to (it's not a bad song, but done so many times:P).

3 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware!!.......2004-05-28

This is one of the better Sondheim tributes, but because RCA cut out 2 numbers from the original 2 lp set to fit on one disc, I can only give this 3 stars. I owned the original lp set, and wasnt aware of this omission until after I bought the cd. One of the best songs on the original, You're Gonna Love Tomorrow/Love Will See Us Through with Liz Callaway (among others) from Follies was cut. Inexcusable! There were several other lesser songs they could've cut instead if time was a problem. (Poems and There's Something About a War being two of them) In small print in the booklet it says the 2 cut songs are available on Collected Sondheim. Yeah, like I want to shell out 50 bucks to get those 2 songs when I have everything else on that compilation? If you havent heard the original set, you'll probably love this recording and there is a lot to love, including Angela Lansbury singing Send In the Clowns with Sondheim on the piano. But if you have heard the original LPs, Buyer Beware! Shame on you, RCA!!!

3 out of 5 stars Atrocious! Dont be fooled!.......2000-04-29

This recording is really realllllllllly bad. The songs are terrific, of course, although the selection seems rahter arbitrary. And it is terrific to have a recording of lost gems like House of Marcus Lycus and Invocation. But otherr than that, this CD just stinks! The arrangements were scaled down to a piano (which really seems like its being piped in from a different concert hall) and a wince-inducing synthesizer. The voices are uniformly distant and tinny, the result - i assume - of poor mic placement. And WHO is this Stephen Jacob person, and how did he get it into his head that he's a singer? Every time he opens his mouth - I kid you not - I shudder. I was kind on this CD - I give it 3 stars only because it has some great songs on it, and Judy Kaye's Another Hundred People is very very good. But other than that, this is worthless.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful recording of some great Sondheim.......2000-04-13

I was at this concert, and this recording captures the excitement that the performers generated that night. A lot of Sondheim's best songs, and a generally strong group of singers. It's unfortunate that the CD release is missing two of the numbers that were performed that evening (and were included on the original LP release). Judy Kaye's "Being Alive" is a particularly glorious highlight of this CD.

5 out of 5 stars I just wish I'd been there!.......1999-09-09

Live performances are tricky to record, and the result is often not nearly as satisfying as attendance at the event itself. This album, though, is different. "Brilliant" about sums it up. Besides including numbers that had been part of recorded scores before, it includes some that were cut from various musicals, or were never produced at all. Not only is Bob Gunton's performance of "Pretty Little Picture" far better than that on the original "Forum" cast album, it is, I think, done more in the fashion Sondheim intended. And two of the "cut" "Forum" numbers are delicious: "In the House of Marcus Lycus" is delightfully sly and filled with double-entendre, and George Hearn revels in the witty lyrics; and "There's Something About A War" is screamingly funny, especially at the point the soldiers lose control gloating about "houses to destroy --Hey! women to enjoy-- hey! statues to deface - hey! - mothers to debase - hey!...". Even the wonderful scoring for small ensemble works perfectly. (In "Something about a war" the fanfare, in the original cast album scored for brass, is performed by a synthesizer, and sounds wonderfully satirical, reminding one of Marvin Martian from the Warner Brothers cartoons.) The numbers from the (at the time) unproduced "Saturday Night" are great, especially Victoria Mallory's ecstatic "What More Do I Need?". The rendition of the moving "Someone In A Tree" is indeed, as others have pointed out, far better than on the "Pacific Overtures" album. And as a final pair of jewels we are treated to Angela Lansbury singing "Send In the Clowns", accompied by Sondheim himself, and then Sondheim and company singing "Old Friends" I could go on and on, but you get the picture. NOW, get the CD!

Product Description

Pristina is a production of Joey B. from The Echoing Green as he works with several talented female vocalists. "So Alive" is a stunningly beautiful song featuring vocal performance by Sarah Masen. Plus, there are two bonus mixes of the song "Skies" featuring vocals by Alicia Luma. Though "So Alive" is originally a dreamy down-tempo track, the remixes by Syrian, Nevarakka, and Novan-K (producer of Cosmic Ally) push the song into the dance club realm.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Soothing Mixes.......2007-01-10

I really like the original song "So Alive" because of the lyrics and style of the music. The mixes were also very good. Because I like dance beats, this was a great way to enhance this song. Hope there are more from this artist coming out.

5 out of 5 stars NICE!.......2006-03-16

So Alive is a great song, the remixes..... even better!I can't wait for the full album!

5 out of 5 stars A great start........2005-09-12

I've been a fan of the Echoing Green for several years. A few years ago, Joey B., the man behind Echoing Green (EG), released an instrumental demo track which wowed those of us who got to hear it. That track later became "Faraway," which is now part of Joey's new "side project" Pristina. Of course, as soon as the "So Alive" single was released, I ordered a copy :) Here's a track by track breakdown... I'm sure I'm not the only one who appreciates reading these. I'm probably not the best review-writer out there, but it's a crime for this great single to go review-less!

1. So Alive. The album version of the title track is awesome, very down-tempo and emotional. It's a cover song, originally by Ryan Adams.

2. So Alive - Syrian remix. A great, danceable remix. Not terribly cheesy or over-produced sounding. Though there are 909 cymbals used, at least they're in the background ;-) (The 909 is an old Roland drum machine, whose sounds are overly used by electronic musicians. They're great sounds, but enough is enough...)

3. Skies - Sequencia remix. My second favorite track from this single. I've only heard a snippet of the album version of this track, but I absolutely love this remix. The original, unless it changes drastically from the clip I heard, has a kind of funky beat, with beautiful, soaring instruments. This remix maintains a danceable beat almost throughout, with smart programming, keeping the track upbeat, and yet maintaining the beauty of the vocals and melodies.

4. So Alive - Nevarakka remix. Definitely danceable, this track just keeps moving along. The ever-used 900 cymbals rear their ugly heads prominently, but they don't detract from the song. After each chorus, there's this crazy-fast synth line. Someone know from the EG forum described this remix as almost being goa (an electronic style). There's a great, slow break in the remix at about four minutes into it. I kind of imagine this remix is like a fighter jet, flying at supersonic speeds until this point, at which is noses up into the atmosphere, then comes speeding back down, where the remix resumes the frenzied pace.

5. Skies - Daybehavior remix. My least favorite track, but that's not to say it's bad. A slow, funky beat used throughout this remix. I can't quite place a name to the sound, I want to call it samba, but I'm pretty sure I'm wrong. It reminds me a lot of this old Casio keyboard my family used to have, with its pre-programmed rhythms. In fact the cymbals and woodblock sound incriminatingly like those Casio sounds... :-D

6. So Alive - Novan-K remix. My most favorite track from this single. I guess they saved the best for last! I actually prefer this remix of "So Alive" to the album version. The vocals are prominent and beautiful, the beat keeps moving along, unique synth sounds show up and fade away (love that metallic ringgggg that pops up about a minute and a half along), and there are no 909 cymbals ;-) I would call this remix progressive, because instruments build up, drop out, then come back again later towards end of the track. There are some great parts when the beat is light and the vocals and instruments swirl around. I especially love the ending of the remix, it's very subdued, and you think it's about to fade out until one last line of vocals is used. A great ending to a great single.

The album is due very soon, and I for one cannot wait! Also, one of the album tracks, "October," is being featured in the movie "Echoes of Innocence," which was just released in "select theaters" across the country.

5 out of 5 stars As Good as any of their Studio Albums.......2006-10-29

Ironic, for me, that this is the only official live Love & Rockets document. I saw them in April 1996, nine days before this concert was recorded, and made a bootleg of the show - which I loved and listened to a million times until, sadly, the tape got lost somewhere in the shuffle.

Then - behold! - they released this live CD, which is essentially identical to my beloved home-made recording.

      Now, on to the music.

Love and Rockets were an awe-inspiring live band, and this CD shows why. Although an audio recording gives no hint to their mind-blowing light show (of course), you do get a high energy performance with tons of great songs. It's almost impossible to believe only three guys were on stage to make such atmospheric-to-blasting music, but all the elements are clearly defined: Daniel Ash's cool-as-hell vocals and shimmering guitar, David J's solid and sometimes ominous bass, and Kevin Haskins' clockwork drumming, with Haskins also supplying some special effects (OK, pre-taped sounds) from his drums.

I won't get into a song-by-song review here, except to say - L&R had an ability to take a song from a whisper to an explosion in a truly unique way, sounding nothing like the soft-!!!LOUD!!!-soft blueprint so many grunge and metal bands mistake for dynamics.

Buy this CD. I saw L&R many times back in the day, and this disc gives ample evidence of what kept me coming back.

5 out of 5 stars Wish I had Been There!.......2006-01-01

I usually steer clear of live albums, but as a half-crazed "Love and Rockets" fanatic, I'm glad I didn't pass this one up. Freakingly outstanding in every way. This goes down as one of the best concert albums of all time rivalling anything I've heard including The Cult, Talking Heads, Bauhaus, et al.........

4 out of 5 stars I was at this show!.......2004-04-03

The bulk of this album is taken from the Sweet FA tour stop on April 9, 1996 at the Metro in Chicago. If you follow the used bins at your local wax depot, you've probably seen this album labelled as a 'radio only' disc (meaning only meant to be broadcast by radio stations, not purchased by consumers) or maybe even heard it played over the airwaves as part of your local rock station's programming. Anyway, an 8-song version of this album was floating around pretty good as a bootleg in the music stores, so to recoup some of the sales L&R put a proper copy out for all to enjoy. The tail-end of the album comes from a different concert back in the late 80's in California and was previously available as B-sides to a few of their singles. As for which singles the songs appeared depended on whether you were looking to purchase vinyl, cassette, or CD.

I was in attendance of the Chicago show and boy did it rock! Full house, lively crowd, $14 tickets, the "Dandy Warhols" opened, Love and Rockets were "on" that night including 3 encores, and that cute short girl with the retro 60's glasses standing stage left who....I digress. The live sound was almost exactly like the album sound - I'm at a loss as to why these recordings sound so raw and different. Oh well. Still a great show.

For the interested, here's the set list from the Chicago show in case you want to play the tracks back in their original order:

      1) Body And Soul (taped intro)
      2) Ball of Confusion
      3) So Alive (dirty version)
      4) Judgement Day
      5) Rock On
      6) Slice of Life (1st ever playing at a Love and Rockets show)
      7) Use Me
      8) Sweet Lover Hangover
      9) Kundalini Express
      10) Clean (David J.)
      11) The Light

      --- Encore 1 ---
      12) No New Tale To Tell
      13) Mirror People

      --- Encore 2 ---
      14) Holiday on the Moon
      15) Yin and Yang (the Flowerpot Man) (really long trippy version)

      --- Encore 3 ---
      16) Sweet F.A.

4 out of 5 stars great live cd.......2003-08-30

this cd shows the progression of Love and Rockets.  the newer material shows a rock band with glam influences..ie, current dance, sampling, and drum and guitar.  this version of the hit "So Alive" is the "dirty" version which is stripped down to just drum and guitar, no samples.  a lot of the "newer" old songs are stripped down, guitar and drums.
I wished it was 2 discs: Disc 1, circa 1989, when Earth Sun Moon came out, so you can see their glam/ psychedelic period.  Disc 2, circa 1996, the stripped down rock and roll period.
I have seen Love and Rockets live 3 times and this covers everything.
ps...there is even a "shout out" for Heartbreak Hotel which was covered by Daniel Ash in Tones on Tail.

5 out of 5 stars Love and Rockets are a great rock band.......2003-08-06

This album jumps out to a great start, and keeps it going. What a fantastic album! To be perfectly honest, I was expecting to hear something a little more electronic (I thought it was from their last tour), only to find out that this recording came on the heels of their "Sweet F.A." album, which rendered some amazing tunes. What can I say about this album? Raw, pulsating, frenetic -- classic Love and Rockets. Of course, I could listen to Mirror People again and again at incredible volumes until my ears bleed....

Sinking-ship soundtracks from diverse media coalesce in this well-produced olio of pleasant renditions conducted by Randy Miller and orchestrated by Donald Johnston. The selections include music to the now historical James Cameron film, including "My Heart Will Go On" in both a solo piano and as a grand easy-listening instrumental. Similar respectful treatments are also provided in the fanfare from Jean Negulesco's 1953 film composed by Sol Kaplan, some of William Alwyn's score to Roy Baker's 1958 British film A Night To Remember, Maury Yeston's compositions for the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, and Lennie Niehaus's score for the 1996 television miniseries. Included also is the sentimental favorite "Nearer My God to Thee," which historians have determined was not played when the real ship went down. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars What an inspiring musical masterpiece!.......1999-11-22

This compilation finally gives us access to a piano version of "my heart will go on", which is to say the least the most beautiful way to listen to the melody. Everytime you play track 2, you feel an epiphany running through your body. Let us thank James Horner's genius for the melody, and those at Varese Sarabande for putting together such a wonderful CD. Hello from Caracas.

4 out of 5 stars I HAVE THE CD AND I LISTEN TO IT OFTEN. I REALLY LOVE IT........1999-05-09

I LOVED THE, CD VERY, VERY MUCH . THE FIRST NIGHT THAT I GOT THE CD I LISTENED TO THE THEME SONG. THEN I REMEMBERED IT. THE CD WAS THE TALK OF THE SCHOOL FOR ABOUT A MONTH AND A HALF.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Supplementary Soundtrack to JH's Original.......1998-07-13

Varese Sarabande has put together an excellent compilation and should help hold over Titanic music fans until James Horner's 2nd Titanic Album arrives in September. The album has a number of instrumental tracks to the James Cameron movie as well as music from the Broadway show, the TV Miniseries from '96 (starring Catherine Zeta Jones), the 1958 British Film "A Night to Remember", and the 1953 Hollywood Film (starring Clifton Webb and Barbara Stanwyck). Even if one has only seen the recent movie, the soundtrack is worthwhile to add to your collection especially if one likes movie instrumental music and Titanic in particular. There are excellent full orchestra versions of the rousing "Southhampton" and "My Heart Will Go On." There is also an excellent piano version of "Rose's Theme" and an excellent old fashioned dance waltz of "Rose"..."A Life So Changed" is my favorite - the inspiring message of living and thriving after the death of a loved one is very poignant...Other tracks are excellent: "Nearer My God to Thee" is sad and elegiac while Lennie Niehaus's "Titanic" is atmospheric and moody...Overall, a very good instrumental album; worth buying!

4 out of 5 stars A Challenging Listen, but brilliant.......2004-03-23

For those who are expecting another How Memory Works or Live in Chicago, hold your horses. Joan of Arc has grown up. Just like previous albums, Joan of Arc's So Much Staying Alive and Lovelessness is a fantastic psychedelic brain trip that challenges the ideas of rhythm, melody, and coherence. But the similarities stop there. Quite simply, Joan of Arc has put out thier rock album. Upon first listen I hated this record. However I usually find that the hard to listen to records usually become my favorites after repeated listens. There is something both disturbing and soothing about Joan of Arc's seemingly random guitar meanderings, subtle beats and Tim Kinsella's neurotic, yet buttery voice. Once you allow your brain to accept the experimental nature of the music you begin to hear how brilliant it really is. It is not at all random, but a well orchestrated, complicated masterpiece that truly defies genre. It's like listening to Sonic Youth if they were really into new Radiohead with Nick Drake as the mouthpiece. For those of you who REALLY appreciate music for music's sake, or old Joan of Arc fans, challenge yourself by trying this album out and see if it doesn't grow on you. I give this CD a 4/5 for originality, and better listenability than most of thier previous albums. Great.

4 out of 5 stars Normalating from the Deviation.......2004-02-10

At first listen you may be wishing that you could harken back to the Joan of Arc of 1999, and erase this memory from your head, but after repeated listenings this CD becomes something that embeds in your psyche. A bit more melodic and calm that prior releases, it does a nice job at making workable lyrics...and throws in the occasional chorus or two. Tracks 2, 6, and 11 are the highlights, melding beautiful spoken word elements on 11. Shell out the big bucks and add this to your collection.

3 out of 5 stars A different Joan of Arc.......2003-11-10

This is Joan of Arc but so different from their other albums. I really enjoyed the first four albums especially the middle three as for this, this is very different. Tim is singing more in tune, he's creating melodies, his lyrics make more sense, the album is actually structures into songs. . .in otherwords, it's all wrong. If you never liked Joan of Arc to begin with you'll like this, if you've liked Joan of Arc a lot this'll be somewhat of a dissapointment, get In Rape Fantasy & Terror Sex We Trust instead.

1 out of 5 stars title of review.......2003-03-05

I don't understand why anyone would like this album. In fact I'd wonder if the Joan Of Arc fans who like this record ever really appreciated their other albums at all. All their other albums were great, The Gap less so, but the first three were full of excellent melodic interesting music. This new album is so bland, dull, dead, uninteresting and worthless. You might as well listen to an Oasis album.

3 out of 5 stars Junkmedia Review- Pretentious or challenging? You decide.......2003-02-19

Calling Joan of Arc a "band" is something of a misnomer. They've always seemed like more of an art project than your standard rock group. Joan of Arc songs lurch in all different directions: some sound impossibly complex, others willfully tossed off. Tempos change frequently and without warning, guitars weave and wind around each other, and random noise seeps in through the cracks. Over it all, Kinsella moans, croons, and howls lyrics about linguistics, trash culture, and obscure French films. Is it any wonder he's half-jokingly said his band plays "music that no one likes"?

But people do like Joan of Arc, and there are a lot of worthwhile, adventurous ideas happening all over Lovelessness. "The Infinite Blessed Yes" is a beautifully drifting tune that almost feels poppy despite its odd time signature and impenetrable lyrics. She said you can't be so quietly gay / Cuz I already am and no one will ever let you keep anything they know you have. And "Perfect Need and Perfect Completion" has an almost straightforward (although still a bit oblique) narrative, revealing a movement away from the too-smart-for-his-own-good approach that has plagued other Kinsella releases. Perhaps most interesting is "Mr. Participation Billy," in which the singer details random acts of violence over a jaunty piano melody. Never has anyone sung "he got his pelvis smashed with a baseball bat" so sweetly.

Whether you find Kinsella's brand of experimental pop insufferably pretentious or delightfully challenging (I find it a bit of both), you have to give the man credit for his vision. Indie rockers are often content to run their sound into the ground, content to play things safe. But Joan of Arc seem to work without a net, allowing their impulses and instincts to guide them, no matter what the consequences. The ride may be a bumpy one, but that doesn't mean its not exhilarating.

A phenomenal recording. I've had the privelege of seeing a masterclass/lecture on Baroque performance practice taught by this woman, and her musicality and depth of understanding is peerless, not to mention her charisma and tone of voice. It all comes through in the recording. Brava!
