Of all of the recordings of Vivaldi's Folia, this is the one that I am most pleased with on account of the fury of the playing style and the warm, woody sound of the authentic instruments.

Programmatically conceived in the same vain as it's predecessor on Alia Vox ('La Folia' AV9805), 'Altre Follie' traces the development of the renowned "Folia" progression which was to be the source of inspiration for scores of compositions, spanning 5 centuries and culminating in the oeuvres of composers such as Nielson and Rachmaninov. As on the previous disc, the arrangement of the selected material is primarily chronological, although here there is greater emphasis on solo contribution. The outstanding calibre of the individual performers ensures the resounding success of this decision, most obviously in the virtuosic fireworks of Manfredo Kraemer (violin), Rolf Lislevand (guitar/theorbo) and Michael Behringer (harpsichord).

In truth though, this is probably not the kind of CD which is best appreciated from end to end, given the fact that much of the 'variation' is (inevitably) achieved in these works by means of rhythm or surface decoration rather than harmonic elaboration. In this resepct, Santiago de Murcia's 'Gallegas' - significantly bearing a strong resemblance in places to Martin y Coll's 'Diferencias Sobra La Gayta' [i.e. NOT 'La Folia'], c.1700 - provides a welcome relief from the prevalent similarity of keys and motifs, and Savall clearly thought so too given that Murcia's 'Folias Ytalianas' [1732] - a truer representation of the Folia progression - are avoided. Subtle variety could in fact have been achieved in other ways, for example by drawing upon works which exploit changes in either ensemble (eg Ribayaz, 'Folias' ['Luz y Norte...', 1677] for harp and guitars) or style (eg the overtly French setting by Jean Henri d'Anglebert ['Pieces de Clavecin', 1689]).

Musicologically the CD presents few major difficulties, and as an overall result it is a praiseworthy fusion of stylish playing within a historically informed backdrop. Track 1, however, is a notable exception. Admittedly, it is 'an improvisation', but one nonetheless unashamedly based on the 'Cachua Serranita' preserved in the Codex Martinez Companon of c.1783-5 (Tomo II, fol 192). The presence of any viol in such a late work would be problematic, but is surely even more so in one with a specific performance note ("...qe cantaron, y baylaron '8' pallas" - 'pallas' signifying the young women who sang and danced in Commemoration of the feast of the 'Virgen de la Puerta' which the text concerns) in a collection copiously illustrated with images of the musicians/instruments who performed this music.

Still, this CD can be easily recommended - one would expect no less from Savall, of course - even if it is perhaps best enjoyed in small sections.

This great music has survived 500 years of man's madness and destruction for our enjoyment. The quality of interpretation is worth five stars. Classical music at its best, the combination of instruments and perfomers makes it perfect music to listen again and again until you have captured all the sounds and identified each instrument. Great to listen to on an Ipod or a superior sound system.

I adore this cd!.......2004-07-29

A wonderful Renaissance cd, I love the fine musicianship of all the instrumentalists and I particularly admire Geraldine McGreevy's bold and audacious interpretation of these songs. One of my favorites is #24, a lyrical instrumental piece, beautifully done. I highly recommend this cd!

If you enjoy spanish renaissance music, this cd is a must have. The songs vary widely from one to another: sacred and secular - vocal and instumental. The instuments used are pimarily: lute, guitar, drum, and recorder. I do not recall hearing any of the reed instuments of that era, crumcorns, etc. Buy it and enjoy.

Absolutely Delightful.......2004-05-24

"Song of David" is the CD that introduced me the vast world of Jewish music, taught me there is more to it than klezmer and "Hava Nagila," and served as the catalyst for my evergrowing collection of Jewish music from around the world. The music selections and recording quality are superb.

A Song of David: Music to my heart.......2003-01-01

I own and enjoy several other CDs of Sephardic music, but this one is my favorite. The melodies are poignant, lively and celebratory. I don't speak Spanish, but to listen and suddenly hear familiar Hebrew phrases and words emerge makes me feel connected to the Jewish communities that flourished in Spain a thousand years ago.

My only complaint is that the lyrics as sung don't always match with the lyrics as printed. Syllables and letters seem to be missing from the printed version.

Definitivamente Colette debio ganar el primer lugar, pero como siempre, gana el favorito de TV Azteca, no el que lo merece. Colette es poseedora de una bellisima voz, diferente... Su interpretacion en cada una de estas canciones llevan su sello. El titulo del disco es el indicado. Personalmente me gusto muchisimo El Amor coloca. Señora, A mi manera. Aire, Me gusto mucho Como una ola y Mudanzas. Me hubiera gustado que incluyeran en su disco sus intrepretaciones de El Herradero y Hasta que me olvides, y su duo con Samuel en Acompañame. Sin duda alguna Colette va a llegar muy alto. Es una chava super disciplinada y entregada. Yo le auguro un gran futuro en este ambiente.

Ines Nominada a los Latin Grammys.......2006-10-15

Nacida en la Ciudad de Nueva York, Inés, gracias al trabajo de su padre, ha sembrado raíces en varios rincones del mundo como Francia, Chile, República Checa, Suiza y por supuesto, Colombia, "donde está mi corazón realmente" comenta la joven cantautora.

Abogada de profesión, Inés comenzó su affair con la música a los 13 años en Chile. Un familiar le obsequió una guitarra acústica para complacer las peticiones de la joven quien se encontraba viviendo allí. Inés se refugió en su guitarra. Un amigo le enseñó unos cuantos acordes y con este nuevo conocimiento, agarró lápiz y papel y compuso su primera canción: Eterno. La canción quedó en un cajón hasta que unos años más tardes, de vuelta en Colombia, ganó el primer lugar en el concurso Ínter colegiados de una de las estaciones de radio juveniles, más importantes de Bogotá; a nivel nacional obtuvo el segundo lugar unos meses más tarde.

Un día como cualquier otro, su hermano la invitó a participar en una sesión para el nuevo disco de Cristian Castro. Inés aprovechó esta oportunidad para presentarse y pedirle al astro que la dejara cantar para él. La reacción al escucharla, "fue normal, no pensé que me llamaría", cuenta Inés. Unas semanas más tarde recibió una llamada donde la invitaban a cantar coros para la nueva canción del ídolo mexicano; Azul.

Con este nuevo voto de confianza, Inés siguió trabajando arduamente para darse a conocer en el ámbito musical. Grabó con Ricardo Montaner y llevó su música a varias editoras musicales quienes la pusieron en contacto con distintos cantautores, incluyendo la dominicana Alih Jey con quien creó una excelente una mancuerna para componer.

Luego el sueño de Inés se comenzaba a forjar. En el 2003, uno de sus temas se colocó en el tercer lugar como mejor composición en el 2do Festival Mundial de la Música donde más de 25 países participaron.

Gracias a los contactos creados durante su tiempo en Miami, Inés fue invitada a participar en el Musicians Exchange organizado por Respek Records. En este evento, tuvo la oportunidad de conocer a grandes cantautores de la industria Latina como Juan Carlos Perez Soto, Fernando Osorio, Eduardo Osorio y más.

En el 2005, "Que pasó?" el primer sencillo de su álbum "A Mi Manera" ocupó los principales lugares de la radio en Colombia y permaneció por más de 23 semanas en listas. Además su video, grabado en la ciudad de New York, estuvo en rotación en varios canales de video, alcanzando una posición entre los primeros 10 videos más solicitados de MTV.

Su segundo sencillo "De Repente" siguió los pasos de "Que pasó?" y se encuentra en los primeros lugares de las listas musicales en Colombia.

En Septiembre del 2006 Inés Gaviria recibió un Disco de Oro en Colombia por las ventas alcanzadas con su álbum "A mi Manera" y además fue sorprendida con dos nominaciones a los prestigiosos Premios Latín Grammy como "Mejor Nuevo Artista" y "Mejor Artista Vocal Pop Femenina".

Cuatro años después de haber pisado tierra en Miami, y sin contar con el apoyo de una disquera, pues es ella quien actualmente promociona su proyecto independientemente, Inés se prepara para compartir su música con el mundo. Ciertamente, su debut marcará la industria de la música por su propuesta tan original y voz angelical.
