A real BUST PLEASE Realize, this is a CD not DVD, Don adam's timing and delivery were one in the same...it really falls short without the visual. This rater makes you pick at least on star. I would buy the Get Smart DVD collection at the drop of a hat, this I would give no stars, I am sure it is posted with the DVD's so people like my self that are excited about finding another little gem will buy it before reading the fine print.

I find this CD more enjoyable each time I listen to it. I can picture all of the expressions on Don Adams face as he speaks his lines and although Get Smart was more a visual comedy this CD makes me laugh out loud. Gotta play that Get Smart theme over and over on the stereo. The CD booklet contains a 1967 interview with Don Adams and some info on the series which I really enjoyed. Great pictures, too.
I've given this item 4 stars because I don't care much for the bonus tracks "Max" and "99" and the price is a bit steep.
Get Smart fans will definitely get something out of it while waiting for the DVDs to become more affordable.

Got Smart-- Ordered a Classic.......2007-01-10

Like sitting on my grandmother's floor in my PJ's, the opening theme to Get Smart got me giddy. This collection of favorites is sure to please any fan of the television series. Caution: resist the urge to sample the songs and voice-overs on to rap songs. That is stealing, kids!

Sorry about that.......2005-04-14

This isn't really a soundtrack album. It's a comedy album featuring segments from the Get Smart TV show, with new framing sequences featuring Don Adams. The idea is that Maxwell Smart is in a tight spot, and he is reminiscing about past situations that might help him out. The framing sequences were written by Buck Henry. Some of the scenes from the TV show don't work as well without the visuals, but for the most part they are still pretty funny. There are three bonus tracks on the CD. Both sides of a rare single released by Barbara Feldon are here. "99" and "Max" are both silly novelty songs, and Miss Feldon sings off key (the songs are also in the opposite order that they appear on the track listing). The final bonus track is the "Get Smart" theme music. Fans of Get Smart should enjoy this CD.

Maxwell Smart Rides Again.......1999-02-01

This CD is comprised of short clips from the original series of Get Smart. It's a great cd and should bring back some great memories. Liberace was a great showman and entertainer. This double CD is the best record of his classic act and demonstrates what Liberace was all about. Although recorded in 1954 the sound quality is fine and many of the elements from that period remained part of Liberace's act over more than 30 years. Interestingly - he was not yet using "I'll Be Seeing You" as his exit music. If there is anything you like about Liberace - get this CD.
NB Amazon (on 2/5/04) was only listing the tracks on the second CD.

Permanently altered state of musical awareness.......2005-10-27

When New Albion records brought out the LP Light Over Water by John Adams in 1983, I was flipped into a new sonic world. "Flipped"? Well, it is transcendant music, and I experienced a new emergent state of mind from which I still get a contact high (and there was no external substance involved!).

What's especially interesting about this early piece (Adams has called it, "My forgotten [master]piece") is that it beautifully establishes John Adams' unique musical vocabulary/sytax/style that can be discerned in nearly all of his subsequent work--all the way through the recent (2003/5) 2nd violin concerto, entitled Dharma At Big Sur.

John Adams calculatingly stepped into the role formerly held by Aaron Copland &, perhaps, Leonard Bernstein: Unofficial official American Composer. The job of this composer is to channel durable avant garde ideas into compositions suitable for a Kennedy Center performance. John Adams is a fine composer. The only hitch is that the so-called minimalist techniques of Steve Reich & Philip Glass had already achieved popular currency, while more "difficult" composers such as Terry Riley, Lamont Young & Pauline Oliveros had found smaller but equally enthusiastic audiences. Also, the minimalist "sound" had crossed over into pop music by the early Seventies, influencing both disco & new wave.

Glass moved into experimental opera. Reich returned to his spiritual concerns. & strong political viewpoints. So here comes a two-fer of "Shaker Loops" (1977/revised 1983) & "Light Over Water," the latter by 1983 a decade late yet right on time, dollar-wise. The road lay open for the grand Verdian/PBS hoopla of "Nixon in China."

"Light Over Water" is a charming & listen-able extended composition by John Adams, reassuringly subtitled "symphony for brass instruments and synthesizers." It's nice that one doesn't need to flip a record halfway through. "Shaker Loops" is a better work, albeit as contrived an "Americana" creation as an Andrew Wyeth painting, & lots more fun performed by a larger ensemble, anyway.

But what's the point? Early electronic masterworks by Pauline Oliveros & Morton Subotnick that delight the ear & mind are back in print. Reich, Glass, Young & Riley are well represented in the catalogue. You can still purchase the Talking Heads' "Remain in Light," produced in the minimalist style by Brian Eno. Anyone for Kraftwerk? Laurie Anderson? Sonic Youth? Balinese shadow puppet music? Surf guitars? Rev up yer media player & explore. You can thank me later.

These are two more fine works by minimalist composer John Adams. If one appreciates Adams' style of composition, this CD is well worth acquiring.

This is a razzle-dazzle selection of American music culled from a few of Sir Simon Rattle's previously released recordings. Two excerpts from Porgy and Bess--"Summertime" and "It ain't necessarily so"--come near the CD's close, and they're reminders of what a great composer Gershwin was. Earlier, his Rhapsody in Blue is played in the orchestration by Grofé, and while it makes a good option, the more familiar version is preferable. Leonard Bernstein's Prelude, Fugue and Riffs is not an easy, tuneful work, but it's fascinating and another side of a composer you may only be familiar with from West Side Story. "Take the A Train" really swings, and "Makin' Whoopee" is a joy. In fact, there's plenty here to revel in. It's a great sampler of American "classical" music. If you've either kept away from 20th-century or American music or simply were unfamiliar with it (or both), this will be a fine ear-opener. If you already appreciate the idiom, this offers a really fine cross-section. --Robert Levine

Eerily contemplative.......2004-12-11

I first heard "Fog Tropes" on a John Adams CD I got almost accidentally. It's called "American Elegies" and has other pieces by Charles Ives, David Diamond, and a few others. I could picture a ship going through a deep fog. Then I had the opportunity to listen to this. Marshall has me hooked!

Mind you, I'm not a fan of "new age" music. Minimalist music appeals to be because, I suppose, of my taste for Ligeti and his contributions to "2001: A Space Odyssey." I don't even know into what category this music falls, except good.

That's it! It reminds me of what I would expect to hear of the interstellar music which signalled the earth in Mary Doria Russell's "The Sparrow," which, by the way, is an excellent novel.

No, it ain't gonna make it at a dance party. But if you need to relax, maybe even contemplate your navel for a moment, listen to this music, like a new medium, or something you may hear from another world.

A Haunting Masterpiece.......2001-11-14

One of my favorite albums of any genre, Fog Tropes/Gradual Requiem is an unforgettable, beautiful work with a wide variety of moods from gloomy foghorns to bright mandolin. It is fascinating and groundbreaking, yet infused with rhythm (fast, slow or in between) that holds the listener's attention throughout. In Gradual Requiem, we feel the cycles of grief (Marshall dedicated the album to his late father) alternating between despair, recovery, and resolution. The album that made me a fan of Ingram Marshall.

Shadows & Fog.......2000-07-29

The only two adjectives I can think of to describe this recording seem mutually exclusive; 'creepy' and 'beautiful!' Marshall's early soundscapes are intensely captivating and moving. Ever wonder what the Chicago Symphony's brass section would sound like at the bottom of Lake Michigan? Listen to _Fog Tropes!_ All three pieces on this disc are very strong, and should appeal to fans of contemporary 'art' music and ambient music alike.
