5 out of 5 stars Latin-American maestros at their very best.......1999-09-09

This recording brings the music of great composers from Mexico,Brazil, and Argentina. The Huapango by Moncayo is played beautiful and a well performed solo for trumpet and trombone.Sensemaya is played with virtuosity."Estrllita" is the best known of all Mexican song here arrenged for strings is very charming. The "Trezinho do Caipira" by Villa-Lobos is performed here to great effect by the orchestra and its percussion section. The Obertura Festiva by Halfter is performed with grace.Galindo's "Sones Macriachi" is also a piece where a mariachi gorup is immitated also to great effect by the orchestra and I think that Mr.Galindo captured the spirit of Mexico very well here. Its a great recording.Thank you Naxos... Well done Mr. Batiz

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite Performance.......1999-08-03

Batiz does a magnificent job, especially with respect to Huapango. The orchestra is full and vibrant. As a brass player (trumpet), I listen especially close to this section of the orchestra. I must say that the brass met my expectations: they have great volume and lose neither control nor focus on fortissimo passages. All instruments with solo parts do an excellent job of finding a balance between projecting their sound and maintaining musicality. The trumpets in particular possess that "sizzling" or vibrating quality which characterizes the better players.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful mexican music.......1999-04-03

great music interpreted by a great director, maestro Batiz

5 out of 5 stars Brazil Samba.......2005-10-06

Many loath this collection and say it is dated and that David Byrne did not make the best possible selections to represent classic Samba music. But this is one heck of a CD. The two opening tracks by Clara Nunes will leave you mesmerized by those vocals and sad over what could have been if not for her tragic death. Beth Carvahlo on track 7 is one of the best Samba numbers from the 80s I've ever heard. Many other big name artists from Samba's past are represented here and while maybe they aren't represented by their best works, they are displayed well and this is one nice collection.

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential Samba.......2005-07-07

A masterpiece released in 1989, and probably the reason why David Byrne kept pushing the exploration of world music. A Must Have.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Most of these songs aren't hotter than lukewarm.......2003-04-09

Only two or three really make the grade, and those come in at 4 out of 5 at best. The real source for great sambas of the same sound/period is from a different anthology: "Brasil: a Century of Song: Volume 1 = Carnaval". The majority of these are at least 4 stars, and quite a few clock in at 5. The other three volumes in the series ['Folk & Traditional', 'Bossa Nova Era' and 'MPB - Musica Popular Brasileira'] are just as good!

Problem is [when you're searching for this type of music] is that Brasilians spell the name of their country "Brasil" not "Brazil", and Amazon's search engine doesn't bridge the gap. You type in "Brazil", you're going to miss a lot of good CD's.

All in all, 'Brazil Classics' volumes 1 & 2 are more or less tepid . . . though volume 3 ('Forro, Maracatu, etc.') really takes off running and never stops. That one's definitely 5 stars, pretty much all the way through.

3 out of 5 stars Average selection of Brazilian sambas.......1999-09-28

David Byrne needs to be put in his place, and his place is not Brazilian music (especially samba). There are some very famous and beautiful sambas from Brazil, but this CD includes maybe 1 or 2 of this caliber. Beginners may want to search for pagode samba titles before this one.

5 out of 5 stars You'll never get tired of this music.......1999-07-26

I've been listening to this tape going on nine years now, and I've got to say, it's one of the very few compilations I own that always puts me in a great mood. This is a must buy!

5 out of 5 stars This is a fantastic introduction to samba.......1998-11-06

This disc was compiled by David Byrne, and he has done an excellent job in selecting the best offerings of some of the biggest names in Brazilian music (though there is a greater diversity here than on "Beleza Tropical"). I really enjoy Clara Nunes and Beth Carvalho, and even the two songs from Alcione (who normally sings insipid american style "slow jams") are great. Martinho da Vila and Paulinho da Viola are both represented, two artists I would encourage everyone interested in Brazilian music to familiarize themselves with.

5 out of 5 stars Gods, Girls and Guitars: Samba, the music of Brazilian life.......1998-07-11

This was the first Brazilian album I ever bought. Since this purchase, made over four years ago, I've learned portuguese, traveled to Brasil four times, and danced in the streets during carnival. Unlike other Latin American music, which also features interesting, hip-moving sounds, Samba laughs and plays. For example, the song 'E preciso muito amor' is sung by a man whipped by his woman. "It takes a lot of love," the lyrics go, "to put up with this woman. Everything she sees in the window she wants...and I have to give with out complaining, because if I don't, she'll cry and threaten to leave." Funny stuff. The tribulations of the common man on the street. The instrumentation is what defines the traditional samba genre. Heavy on Afro-Brazilian percussion, the rich samba rhythms begin with the earth-trembling drum beat of the Surdo(bass drum) and build to screeching otherworldly sound of the Cuica (friction drum). Though I have discovered literally dozens of other indigenous Brazilian musical styles in the four years since I bought this album, I still regard Samba as THE national music of Brazil. Enjoy!

      5 out of 5 stars Brazil's "other" great music.......2003-08-27

It's no wonder that Brazil's best-known musical style in America is bossa nova. The affinity to jazz (which might be the only kind of music really invented in America), the coolness, and sophistication make it naturally appealing to international connaiseurs of music. There is, undoubtedly, less of a natural audience in America for "European dances, played on Mediterranean instruments, with Brazilian rhythms," as someone once described -choro-, but I am convinced that traditional choro and samba can more than hold their own against bossa nova. This music is as quintessentially Brazilian, in my humble, foreign admirer's view, if not more so. I hope that people find in this disk and its predecessor an opening into a great body of enjoyable and memorable music. I do like this one more of the two -- I like the selections better, the disk is more cohesive in style, and it's more instrumental. As in the previous disk, the technical perfection of the Epoca de Ouro remains a joy. Jacob do Bandolim used to say with sad resignation that choro would die with him; thank God, it hasn't.

5 out of 5 stars add this to your Brazilian repertoire!.......2004-09-14

This is the 2nd in a collection of Brazilian compilations brought to us, the North American audience, by David Byrne. I am so glad that I am one of the many who have taken an interest in this series! There is a wonderful cross section of sounds taken from the favelas (barrios or poor neighborhoods) of Rio de Janeiro and other parts of Brazil.

Perhaps one of the most well known genres of Brazilian music is the samba, but few people know there is so much more to the repertoire of Brazilian music than just that. There is the pagode and also the ballads, of course (the fado as an example--which is common in the Azores and in Portugal). Some of the most danceable music is played as a form of worship to the orixas (or patron gods and goddesses in Brazilian santeria worship).

The songs range from "A Deusa Dos Orixas" and "Ijexa (Filhos de Gandhy)" by Clara Nunes (a beautiful singer taken before her time, due to a botched varicose vein operation in the early 1980s), to "Formosa," a lively samba by Ciro Monteiro.

This is a wonderfully rich and educational journey through the backroads of Brazil that some people completely bypass when they consider the music from that part of the world.

5 out of 5 stars The Greatest Collection of Pagode Songs Ever!.......2003-11-04

As a child, I had many of these songs on cassette, and after nearly 20 years of playing it over and over again, it was starting to deteriorate and I seemed to be unsuccessful at finding any album that had all these great, classic pagode songs on them. But luckily, I accidentally ran into this CD and decided to check it out. To my pleasant suprise it had everything I could have ever wanted in a Samba CD. Keep in mind, there are different forms of Samba. This one being Pagode style. So this is not Carnaval style samba. Pagode is a style that was made popular in the 70's by artists such as Beth Carvalho. Pagode is basically a word for "back yard samba party", because it is played informally at parties and neighborhood gatherings. The singer is accompanied by a smaller band and the batteria (drums) are not prescent the way they are in Carnaval samba music. Aside from Beth Carvalho (my personal favorite!), other great pagode artists (who also appear on this album as well) are, Zeca Pagodinho, Martinho da Vila, Alcione, and Clara Nunes. Be sure to check out "batuca no chao", "S.P.C", "sufoco" and "o encanto do gantois". They are classics!

3 out of 5 stars Most of these recordings aren't hotter than lukewarm.......2003-04-14

All in all, 'Brazil Classics' volumes 1 & 2 are more or less tepid . . . though volume 3 ('Forro, etc.') really takes off running and never stops. That one's definitely 5 stars, pretty much all the way through.

3 out of 5 stars un buen inicio.......2001-05-08

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to Samba.......2001-04-10

... [A]s with each album in this series, "O Samba" is
probably the best introduction/sampler to Samba you can find on the
market. Samba is a very complicated and intricate genre, with many
sub-categories and can describe anything from what we think of as
Bossa Nova to the "Samba Enredo" of the "Escolas de
Samba" that parade and compete during Carnaval, incorporating
thousands of dancers, singers and musicians.

        This disc features some
big names in Samba such as Clara Nunes, Beth Carvalho, Alcione, and
Martinho da Vila. The compilers of this album knew exactly what they
were doing when they selected both the artists and the material.
Although it features different styles of samba, the songs are well
arranged and make for an excellent mix (good to set a mood at
        parties).

My recommendation is to buy this album, using it as a
guide if you want to explore further. Anything that you can buy from
Clara Nunes will be great, I have about 10 albums from her and love
all of them. Unfortunately she died in 1984, so her music couldn't be
ruined with cheezy synthesizers (while I think synthesizers can be
used to great effect, on their own merits, they are terrible when used
to replace string sections, vocals or any other instruments and have
no place in samba). The newer albums available from Martinho Da Vila
are still good as well, though I have to warn you that at some point
Alcione became completely wretched and started making what I can only
call "Brazilian slow jams" that sound like they were
produced by Babyface or Kashif. If you like that kind of thing, then
by all means feel free, I'm just posting a warning for the people with
taste. Because of this, I'm afraid to buy newer albums by Beth
Carvalho, but I can attest to any older ones you come across being
top-rate. Feel free to email me for recommendations -
