I love them, and I love they're music. I was lucky enough to see them in concert, and I believe this CD has they're very best.

4 out of 5 stars Great surprise.......2001-06-13

I received this cd as a christmas present last year and it has quickly become one of my favorite spanish language selections. All the songs are well played and though sometimes the lyrics are confusing either way they are truly catchy. The live setting is perfect for the rythems and the feeling of the cd that just makes you want to get up and sing th chorus right along with the band. Great cd for the road or a party.

5 out of 5 stars Latin America Reggae at its best.......2000-12-06

Argentinian Reggae Superband Los Pericos are at its best on this CD. The song selection is impecable, from old time hits to the best of the new material. Plus, the crowd's enthusiasm as backgound creates that sensation only live albums have.

5 out of 5 stars amazing live experience.......2006-09-17

i picked this little guy up in Paris after hearing about the band from my girlfriends friend from France....and i've got to say. This CD set is an incredible mix of french reggae/ska. It doesn't matter if you can't understand the words, because the beats and melodies are so catchy you'll find yourself singing some weird concoction of fake french at the top of your lungs along with them. I'd reccommend this live set to anyone interested in expanding their palette of musical taste. It's a real find...seriously!

Cypress Hill are one of my favorite groups of the 90's, I must admit, that at 1st I didn't liked them because they were so metal, but when I took interest on chicano cultures I started to like them, Sen Dog is my fave one

4 out of 5 stars A few misfires but a very potent arsenal.......2001-04-25

I don't speak a word of Spanish but I am a fan of Cypress Hill and Control Machete. After I heard that this was coming out I thought it would be interesting to listen to and after I heard "No Entiendes La Onda" ("How I Could Just Kill A Man" en espanol) that really decided me.

The sound of this album is roughly equivalent to the sound of each song in English, mostly. Because of the problems of translating between the two languages, there are often some beats which should (or, in the English versions, do) have lyrics on them or lyrics without beats - however the "homeless syllble syndrome", as a friend christened it - is hardly terminal.

The thing which is particularly interesting for students of cross-cultural linguistics is how rapping in a different language really puts a different tone on a familiar track. "How I Could Just Kill A Man" becomes a lot more menacing when performed in Spanish, while the emphasis on "Insane In The Brain" changes from the infamous sample to the elastic-tongued rapping when the song becomes "Loco En El Coco". In a purely subjective sense, it is very entertaining to listen to Real and Sen rapping "Medio loco en el coco/ido de la mente" over the "Insane" sample - although the song does lose the "Don't you know I'm loco?" intro and the sampled outro.

One rather bored afternoon I had the brainwave of translating these Spanish lyrics into English. I am still unsure whether it was due to Babelfish's inability to understand idiom or whether that is actually what the words were, but it is now almost impossible to take "Loco En El Coco" seriously again. This is due to the comic frequency of a word translated as "frog" in the version given to me by Babelfish. I still can't quite work out what the word replaced in the English version.

One of the problems with Cypress Hill is that their albums generally have a fair number of tracks on which it is clear that B-Real, Sen and co didn't work for enough time. Here it can be seen again, there are some tracks (especially the ones written especially for the album) which do have a distinct sound of not having been really taken notice of.

The only other downside for me on this album is the fact that my copy of the CD doesn't work on my CD player - so I have to borrow my parents' to enjoy the idiosyncratic delights of this album. This is made up by the fun of playing "Loco" at a party and being told to take it off - before the listener's face gets a puzzled expression at the reams of Spanish coming out of the speakers.

On the whole, a great CD for Cypress Hill fans (especially those who speak Spanish) or fans of Spanish music. If you want a good fun album which is certainly something different, this is the way to go.

4 out of 5 stars in spanish!.......2000-11-15

cypress hill finally release an album for their spanish speaking fans all over the world.the songs are from past albums but redone in spanish.they are the same beats but the lyrics are just as good in spanish.some of the songs even sound better in spanish! a must have for all hardcore cypress hill fans.

4 out of 5 stars Cool idea.......2000-05-17

Now THAT was an idea: "Let's make a greatest hits album, but let's redo all the songs en espanol!" I have always loved the Hill's canciones en espanol, especially Tres Equis and Latin Lingo from their first album.

If you listen carefully (and know some Spanish), you can tell that some of the lyrics had to be changed around in order to have the same meaning. Unfortunately, the songs that were translated into Spanish from English didn't seem to be as finely crafted as the ones that were originally written in Spanish (check out Siempre Peligroso). Now, I can't understand a lot of what they're rapping, but I can sense that some of the lyrics had to be compressed in order to fit in with the music. Unfortunately, this gives a different lyrical tempo to some of the songs and seems to change them. Not that this is entirely bad...it just takes a little getting used to if you've listened to the original versions enough to have the tempo down in your mind.

All in all, a very impressive album. I'd love to see an entire album of new songs written entirely en espanol.

5 out of 5 stars LATINO LINGO.......2000-01-01

Highly recommended! Fermin used to sing with cult icons Negu Gorriak, from Spain. This album completely rocks in and out! A must buy, you won't be disappointed! Traces of reggae, ska, dub, hip hop, salsa, electronica and ambient can be found throughout the whole album! A good album to dance to, as well as get "nice" to.

5 out of 5 stars A landmark Release....(That gets a truly deserving Re-release!!!).......2006-06-23

If (Like me), you're only familiar will Eddie Palmieri (or "Charlie Palmieri"), via either's solo work, this will come as something as a slight shock, recorded originally in back in the 70's with a full band, This recording has been given a new lease of life, by the recent re-release of this seminal cd. This has the opportunity of inticing a new slew of fans, such is the brilliantly performed and arranged material here, that anyone with a passing interest in Latin, Funk, and Afro-Cuban Jazz, simply must check this out.

The Running time is only a partly 30 mins, but such complaints do prove to be somewhat redundant, as one listen to the performances contained here, will make such quibbles regarding its length seem foolish. This is the perfect example of the sound of Latin Americans migrating to North America, and becoming influenced by ther new surroundings and forming groups, and then performing/recording expressive and passionate music that not only touches upon the roots of latin music, but sounds like it was influenced by Black music such and R&B and early Soul. Because there is so much energy, modal musical shapes, rhythmic precision and melodic arrangements, that it's truly a wonder that this Cd, hasn't had the widespread recognition and praises heaped upon it, like some of the more universally recognised Jazz/Latin albums out there.

The Percussion throughout is sublime, and it highlights Eddie & Charlie's composition and arrangement skills to the fore, and if you've never given Eddie's (or indeed Charlies) other work the time of day, then I assure you, after listening to this staggering work, you'll certainly be inclined to seek out more of their work. As it takes on an almost experimental and improvisational feeling, moving effortlessly from mood, groove, feel and texture. multi-dimensional percussion sections, coupled with brass-heavy horn sections, and carefree guitar and ethereal keyboard work. Not that this album is anything less than accessible, which it frequently is...it's just that, this feels like a Special moment in time, when all the musicians are perfectly in synch with each other and remain musically locked into each other then and are Instinctually feeding off each other, you should take this opportunity to hear a exceptional one-off spectaclular performance, fron a band that would never (seemingly) follow up this landmark album. And it's a classic, not just purely for how breathtaking brilliant it was, but also for the fact that some 30 years later, it still sounds as innovative and essential as it did in the 70's. A must have release

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2004-11-29

I heard this album approximately one year after its release. My best friend Leon turned me on to it and I was immediately taken. This is a must have album combining the best of Salsa, Latin and Jazz. Idle Hands is my favorite cut but the entire album is a must have for any serious collector of music (especially latin and jazz). The album reminds me of many days spent during the seventies listening to the great music created during that period. Harlem River Drive stands as a shining example of that period and the great music that was created.

4 out of 5 stars Latin Funk at its best!.......2003-12-06

Eddie Palmieri's classic latin funk band. Superb, beautiful latin funk from the masters of the genre. Highly recommended.

Judging from the evidence presented here, reggae has definitely hit its heyday in Spain. The majority of the youthful, mainly Spanish bands on this energized anthology quote from reggae, ragga, raggamuffin, and other Jamaican offspring, and they do so with vigor rarely heard since the glory years of punk. Salsa horn charts and manic accordion solos reminiscent of Colombian vallenato give the performances a cutting Iberian edge. Barcelona band Macaco's "La Raiz" sports a Ziggy Marley-esque bilingual lead vocal (mostly in Spanish, occasionally in English) and dub-crazy production worthy of the Mad Professor himself. Basque band King Mafrundi turns Cuban standard "Hasta Siempre" into a Jamaican-style romp, while Sergeant Garcia mixes raggamuffin and an urban Latin atmosphere on the infectious "Amor Pa Mi." In the company of all these upstarts, Buena Vista Social Club alumnus Eliades Ochoa seems like an odd inclusion, though the lovely "Que Humanidad" from his Sublime Ilusion CD stands its ground. --Bob Tarte

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Lively & danceable!.......2005-11-11

Judging by the sound clips, these are 12 eminently listenable tracks from artists I wouldn't mind hearing more of -- bouncy, danceable, hummable, reggae-ish, with lots of lively horns & a dance beat that's practically levitating me out of my chair! Truthfully, I only stumbled across this album while looking for a copy of the track "La Trampa" by Manu Chao & Tonino Carotone, which is the theme song for "Drew Carey's Green Screen Show." It's my 11-year-old son's current favorite TV show, and he sings & hums the song incessantly every time we see an episode. I'm buying the album because of that track, but as I said, based on the music clips, I can tell I'll be playing this album a lot. Here's the track listing with the artists' names (which, as I read Amazon's current entry, includes the track titles but not the artists):

    1. La Trampa - Manu Chao & Tonino Carotone
    2. Amor Pa Mi - Sergent Garcia
