5 out of 5 stars Overjoyed.......2007-08-01

We had the incredible good fortune to have RED MEAT play at our wedding in Occidental CA, and afterwards Owen Bly handed me the bands' brand-new and unreleased CD. We have played it nonstop ever since, even forcing French bartenders to play it on our honeymoon (they all loved it!) This is the best release by the band to date. It represents a perfection of their craft, which is pure, honest and unpretentious country music that can at once evoke laughter and tears. Song topics include: spending too much money on beer, central valley beauty queens, heartaches, hangovers and high-maintenance babes. Fun for the whole family!

5 out of 5 stars Latest Meat Effort Another Winner.......2003-04-09

This is Red Meat's most recent album. The album manages to still sound authentic while reflecting the bands increasing skills in the studio. I guess Dave Alvin knows his stuff. As with all the Red Meat albums you get lovely harmonies, clever lyrics and a classic country sound.

This is Red Meat's most danceable album in my opinion. A few tracks like Catfish Fry and sure to get you two stepping.

Red Meat is country for people who like country. Amazingly they also appeal to people who think they don't like country.

This is not the low end CMT inspired video friendly pop country but rather real country played by really talented musicians.

Hello record companies. Wake up and smell the meat!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best country music cd's I own..........2001-05-25

I'm a big fan of the first two cd's from this band, so I was excited to receive this one when it came out. This cd by far exceeded my expectations. From the opening snap of "That's What I'm Here For"'s drum intro to the closing applause of the two hidden live tracks, this is a first rate album from a first rate band. Red Meat has established itself as one of the finest honky-tonk bands out there, and this cd demonstrates a band firmly hitting its stride.

    Nashville, are you listening?

3 out of 5 stars Not the best cuts of meat.......2001-05-08

I was excited to pick up this album, being a big fan of the previous two albums. However, while good, this one is a little disappointing.

The overall sound is more polished than on previous efforts, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but tends to make Meat sound more "Nashville," something which they aren't (at least as it stands today). The songs also don't have the lyrical snap of previous works, something the band seemingly admits by including another recording of "Lolita," which is essentially unchanged from its previous incarnation on the excellent "Meet Red Meat."

There are many fine songs, though, and the inclusion of several live tracks at the end is a plus (which would have been a better way to include Lolita!). "Sweet Song" in particular stands out as nearly reason enough to by this album. Also, the band tinkers with swing sounds on several cuts, most notably "Catfish Fry." But if someone were looking to be introduced to the band, I'd likely steer them to 13 or Meet Red Meat.

    5 out of 5 stars I Can't Get Enough Red Meat.......2001-04-28

I picked up Alameda County Line based on an interview with it's producer, Dave Alvin. Now I am biased to love what Alvin touches, but I was more than delighted when I heard this CD; I am addicted! This San Franicisco-based sextet kicks it, leaning heavily on the Bakersfield sound with touches of Buck Owens heard lovingly throughout. Songwriter and co-front man Scott Young (who's also featured on guitar, fiddle and trombone) is clever with the phrase, at once bemoning the woes of loving a '64 Dodge Dart in "Under the Wrench," to the joys of jello and deep-fat fried fish in the swing infused "Catfish Fry." But this is not a novelty nor parody act; these folks love traditional country western and Young is equally deft on the side of the broken heart with such tracks as "Stay Away from Me" and "Mr. Heartache". Young shares songwriting credits with bandmates Jill Olson and Max Butler, whose tracks are likewise infectuous. There are also two live ghost tracks, showing that Red Meat stays fresh live and is not simply a stand out in the studio. I'm ready to go see a show, but until then, this CD will be in heavy rotation. One spin of "Lolita" and you'll be hooked too. Red Meat never tasted so good!

5 out of 5 stars Best Country Band You've Never Heard.......2003-04-09

Amazingly talented band. Wonderful vocals. The review from the LA Times is very misleading. Scott Young and Smelly are fine traditional country vocalists. The reviewer never mentions the vocal stylings of "Wholesome" Jill Olsen. She has a wonderful voice.

I've seen this band live numerous times since purchasing my first Red Meat album. I now own all their albums. If you ever get a chance to see them when they tour in your area you won't be disappointed. This is country music the way it's meant to be.

My ex-boyfriend gave me this CD, mainly because he found it funny and kind of annoying, and he was really surprised when I said I loved it. I used to have to edit masses of HTML, and this was a great album to listen to while I did that. I love driving with it as well. It's funny, you can sing along to it, and the music is good. The only other country I really like are Van Lear Rose by Loretta Lynn and the O Brother Soundtrack, so I'm by no means a country music expert. But buy it! You won't be disappointed.

Always being the cynic, I was skeptical when I first received a home-pressed, 45 RPM single of "Girl with the Biggest Hair". I was wrong. Thrilled, I eagerly awaited the release of the "Meet Red Meat" CD, and I wasn't disappointed with that either. Scott Young's lyrics are carefully crafted, yet light enough to be a joy to listen to. The musicians mesh well, producing a sound simple, tight, and reminiscent of country music when it was the music by and for the Common Man instead of Investors. Red Meat's sound is somewhere between AltCountry and the old stuff by Country Music's true greats, washing away all the pablum and pretense coming out of Nash-'vile' these days. "Meet Red Meat" has rekindled my love of country music -- real country music -- that had been long-suffocated by today's mainstream country drivel. This CD is proof that there is hope for country music after all.

This CD is worth the money you'll spend. Buy their other albums too. Go to their gigs. Send them envelopes full of money. We've got to keep music like Red Meat's alive to protect us from Commercialism's wasteland.

4 out of 5 stars Modern production of classic sounds.......1998-11-11

Crisp and classic country music with good production of most often humorous lyrics and always tastey licks. A most enjoyable experience that evokes nostalgic thoughts of the country music of the past, but with modern production quality. A tight group that defintely deserves a listen.

              5 out of 5 stars I hated country before i heard this........1998-10-29

Ther are songs here that are surely destined to become American classics..like "Lolita" or "Texas" or "the girl with the biggest Hair". Wonderful stuff indeed very fresh and often very fuuny. Some great pedal steele guitar and fiddle solos. These guys are not that silly young country rubbish we're used to hearing. No pretty boys(or girls) here. Eat red meat ...we all need some
