Album Details

Italian Soprano Renata Tebaldi was One of the Most Important Post-war Sopranos to Tackle a Wide Range of Puccini Roles, and During the 1950s She Recorded Several Complete Opera Recordings. Some of the Operas were Recorded Twice — in Mono and Then in Stereo. Amongst Those which Tebaldi Committed to Disc in the Recording Studio on Two Occasions Must Be Included La Bohème and Madama Butterfly. It is the Earlier, Mono Recordings of These Two Operas which Are Included Here and They Reveal a Fresh-voiced Tebaldi in Recordings Which, Despite the Stereo Remakes, have Stood the Test of Time.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Tebaldi's art.......2005-09-29

This set covers the entire productive years of Tebaldi's recording career. Turandot, Butterfly and Boheme are from her earlier career while Tosca is from her later career. Since this Tosca recording is now out of print and is somewhat hard to find, this recording itself almost worth the cost of the set. In Turandot, you will find Tebaldi at her fresher voice, lovely and melting. Eventhough I would still rate Callas' first recorded Tosca as my first choice, this Tosca comes very close. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfull.......2005-08-19

Fantastic recordings at a very good price. Tebaldi and Del Monaco rule. You should definetely own this set.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Renata.......2005-03-16

To say that these 12 disks contain some of the finest singing ever committed to disk is no exaggeration, but a simple statement of fact. Historical fact. In the 100 years (more or less) that Puccini operas have been around, only a few sopranos in each generation have been the equal of Renata Tebaldi. One cannot objectively say that anyone has surpassed her. Some opera lovers find her peerless in many of these performances. Personal tastes in singers vary, but no one ever sang these roles better. Few anywhere nearly so well. There is not a single note on any of these recordings that is not heartfelt to the core of her being. Like Maria Callas and Franco Corelli, she was luminous, gargantuan in her talent that personified an age. This is one of the great compilations.

This generous disc of duets for soprano and mezzo-soprano offers a wonderful selection: from the very familiar "Barcarolle" of Tales of Hoffmann, the "Flower Duet" of Madama Butterfly, and the Presentation of the Rose in Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier to the more exotic Anna Bolena-Giovanna Seymour duet from Donizetti's opera and Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito, there's not a bad piece of music or performance here. To be sure, these two singers do certain things better than others--Hei-Kyung Hong's silvery soprano is not ideal for the emotional outpourings (and low notes) of either Anna Bolena or Butterfly, but it's a perfect fit for Sophie in Rosenkavalier, Cleopatra ,and Poppea. Jennifer Larmore's creamy, agile mezzo is gloriously suave in the "Barcarolle," her Seymour is compelling, and her Adalgisa is stunning, but the voice lacks some of the color necessary for Octavian or Nero. But this is a very high-class, entertaining undertaking, and the program is nicely varied. Love good singing? Here you are. --Robert Levine

4 out of 5 stars Voices of Angels!.......2007-03-08

Purchased for one song: Viens Malika (lockme), but like the entire cd. Purchased a few more elsewhere and gave as gifts to my opera buff colleagues.

3 out of 5 stars Where Is the Sparkle?.......2003-11-11

I found this CD very disappointing. To paraphrase Mark Twain, I was hoping for lightning, but found only a lightning bug. Something seems slightly OFF in the blending of their voices in some of the tracks. They are not the worst I've heard, but I have not "imported" any of this CD's tracks to my computer's hard drive to listen to while I'm doing other work. Verrett and Caballe are the ones to listen to if you wish to hear how bel canto duets SHOULD be done.

3 out of 5 stars Miss Hong not in her element.......2003-01-11

This recording must have been driven by the Larmore camp. For Miss Larmore, who was in good voice for this recording, the selections were in her fach for most of the CD. However, the same cannot be said for Miss Hong. Especially disappointing was the Anna Bolena. Miss Hong's voice is much too light for this role. Additionally, she chose not the take many of the upper embellishments more suited for her voice. Miss Hong should have researched her options more carefully on this selection seeing that it takes up 15 minutes on the CD. Similarly, Miss Hong was not well suited for Butterfly. Both divas were out of tune on the Hoffmann. However, the Lakmé was one of the more beautiful recordings I have heard. Likewise, the Rosenkavalier was particularly affecting and the Norma was immaculately in tune.

If you choose to buy this recording, buy it because you want to here a mezzo in good voice. It's a showcase for Miss Larmore. Although Miss Hong is a wonderful singer, this recording does not show what her voice can do when she is in her element.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent!! 5 stars do not suffice!!.......2002-12-20

I was astounded by the quality of the singing and the absolutely gorgeous music that was sung on this album. The two singers sing like goddesses and are very committed to the drama of the music.

The sound is excellent, both spacious and crystal-clear. Teldec sure knows how to capture voices and operatic music on CD. Many thanks to Teldec for recording this exquisitely sung duet album. If only they were around to record a duet album featuring Joan Sutherland and Marilyn Horne. Now that would have been great!

The soprano, Hei-Kyung Hong, has an excellent coloratura technique. Her trills vary from mediocre to very good. Overall, her fioritura is first-rate. Her diction is crystal clear. Her Italian is exquisite. Almost every "r" is rolled. Her French is generally excellent. Her German is quite good. I love the sound of her voice. It is bright and silvery-toned with a brilliant top. The mezzo-soprano is Jennifer Larmore. She has a gorgeous voice, rich and dark. Her voice reminded me of the voice of that great coloratura mezzo, Marilyn Horne. Her coloratura may be a bit below that of the soprano's but it is more than passable. Her trills also range from mediocre to very good. Her diction is sometimes obscured by her rich tone but it is generally excellent. Her track record with rolling the "r's" is not as good as the soprano's but it is more than passable.

The first duet is the Barcarolle from Offenbach's "Les Contes d'Hoffman". I had never heard it before. The simple yet exquisite quality of the music is just wonderful. Both singers acquit themselves admirably in this duet. Their voices blend together beautifully in this love duet.

The second duet is the wonderful duet from Strauss' "Der Rosenkavalier". I had never heard this duet before. Strauss' music is sparkling and brilliant, an absolute joy to the ears. The two singers are wonderful in this duet.

The third duet is a fine love duet from Handel's "Giulio Cesare". The harp accompaniment is fantastic. It was the harpsichord's sounds that made this duet so enjoyable. Handel did a great job writing the music for this very fine opera. Hong is breathtaking in this duet. Larmore supports her wonderfully. I can't decide if I like this duet the most or the one from "L'incoronazione di Poppea". The notes in the booklet say that this duet comes at the end of the opera. This is incorrect. It comes well before the end of the opera.

The fourth duet is from Claudio Monteverdi's underperfomed and underappreciated masterpiece, "L'incoronazione di Poppea". It was an absolute delight to hear this exquisite duet with its fine Baroque music. From Hong's first note, the listener knows that he/she is in for a wonderful treat. The perfomance of this duet is so good that words do not do it justice.

The fifth duet is from Mozart's "La Clemenza di Tito". I didn't realize that Mozart could write such fine Baroque music. The music is beautiful and noble. The singing is excellent.

The sixth duet is the Flower Duet from Léo Delibes' "Lakmé". It is an exquisite piece of French music. I love this duet. No wonder it is considered by many to be the most beautiful operatic piece ever composed. The singing done by Hong and Larmore is transcendental. Mere words cannot describe the sounds that they make with their beautiful voices.

The seventh duet is from Bellini's "Norma". What you get is wonderful, vigorous bel canto music at its best and gorgeous singing by two very able singers. The coloratura is amazing! The staccati notes done in unison are wonderful. The high notes of both singers are powerful and clear. Larmore makes a powerful and convincing Adalgisa, but Hong is clearly not suited to Norma. She doesn't have the temperament to sing the role and her voice is too light to tackle the role's heavy dramatic demands.

The eighth duet is from Donizetti's masterpiece, "Anna Bolena". The bel canto melody found in this piece of music is very fine indeed. Hong tries her best to sound like Bolena, but this role does not show her in the best light. Her voice is too light for this heavy role and she doesn't have the queen's regal temperament. Larmore is very convincing as the repentent Jane Seymour. The singing is fabulous. So is the diction of the two singers. The high C done in unison that ends the duet is spectacular and breathtaking.

The ninth duet is from Puccini's "Madama Butterfly". This is the other Flower Duet on the album. The singing is magnificent. Larmore makes a very fine Suzuki. Hong's Cio-Cio San is excellent. She would make a fine recorded Butterfly. She is, after all, Asian. Some people say she is not good enough to be a Butterfly. I strongly disagree. If Freni and Scotto, two of the lightest-voiced sopranos to have sung the role, were allowed to record "Madama Butterfly", then Hong should be able to do so too.

The tenth duet is from Rossini's "Tancredi". This taxing piece of bel canto is handled superbly by Hong and Larmore. It is 10 minutes and 35 seconds of some of the most difficult coloratura ever written. I was astounded by the singers' amazing virtuosity in this piece. They show us why their coloratura techniques are world-class. The trills, runs over octaves, and roulades are tossed off expertly. Even though this music is very taxing, they still manage to characterize! Sutherland and Horne would be proud.

The eleventh and last duet is from Engelbert Humperdinck's "Hänsel und Gretel". The duet opens with beautiful music but I found this piece to be the weakest of the selections chosen for this album. The music doesn't rise to new heights after the opening notes. The singing is more than average but the piece is not a good showcase for the talent of these two singers. Really, another duet from a better opera should have been included that would have done justice to these singers' unique talent.

Finally, I have to comment on the superb conducting and orchestral playing on this album. Jesús López Cobos is an above average conductor, that's for sure. His conducting supports the singers very well and never intrudes upon their singing. The Münchner Rundfunkorchester provides excellent orchestral playing. They never play too loudly as to drown out the singers. Overall, this duet album is one of the finest ever made with two female singers.

3 out of 5 stars More Duet, less Recit-chat.......2002-01-11

While the vocal talents of these two ladies is considerable, and the duets, when they get to them, are lovely, thrilling and so forth, there is way too much recitative included. It would not be an exaggeration to say that 2/3 of this CD is recitative. Added to that, Teldec has not bothered to include side-by-side translations of the text. Instead, previous to the text, are synopsi of the plots of the various scenes. These things really detract from the overall listening enjoyment. I would prefer just to listen to the duets, but even all the recitative wouldn't be that bad if the translations were included.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars The "Singer's Singer".......2007-01-23

I am thrilled to write the first review of this CD. It is wonderful, and a must-have for fans of lyric sopranos and opera lovers in general.

This CD is a real treat, because it has recordings of Ms. Scotto at various stages of her career: the mid-late 50's, 60's, 70's, and early 1980's. It is instructive and interesting to hear the trajectory of her voice over the years, and priceless to hear some of the roles and arias she truly made her own.

Let's start with the earlier recordings, made between 1958 and 1966. Here is the Renata Scotto that took the world by storm after stepping in for an "indisposed" Maria Callas in 1953. These are truly awesome. One of my favorites is her "Una voce poco fa". She sings it like she was born to sing it. I can also imagine a very cute 24 year old Renata Scotto charming everyone as Rosina. But the highlight of this group is definitely the "Madama Butterfly" from the famous 1966 recording she made with Barbirolli. There are six full arias/duets, starting with "A! Quanto cielo!" and ending with "Tu? tu? piccolo iddio!" The "Un bel di" is sublime, and the "Vogliatemi bene" duet with Carlo Bergonzi was transporting.

She then includes two arias from "Nabucco". This is probably one of those problematic career roles many people fault her for. Abigail is a very strenuous role. The character is mad...through the whole opera. She's constantly agitated and yelling. That means it is a scream fest for soprano. I just wince when I hear these arias. She does them OK, but really has to push.

The later selections show a mature Scotto. These recordings were made in 1980 and 1981. There are some amazing things here. I was least impressed by her three selections from "La Boheme". Her money notes in "Si. Mi chiamano Mimi" are unsteady and her vibrato kind of wide. But, you think, hey it happens over time, right? Then, you hear a recording of six selections from "La Traviata" from two years later. Incredible. The very difficult first big scene, starting with "E strano" and ending with "Sempre libera" was perfect. Her "Teneste la promessa" will break your heart. It was without a doubt, one of the best Violettas I've ever heard.

And, before we end, her "Vissi d'arte" was the best I've ever heard. It is an amazing performance by a woman, who at age 47, really understood what the aria is about. I've heard it so many times, and by so many great singers. With Renata, I felt I was hearing it for the first time.

Brava Scotto and EMI. Thank you for this wonderful CD.

      Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Opera at its best.......2001-06-27

Without a doubt, Madama Butterfly is clearly one of the greatest operas ever written by the talented Giacomo Puccini. This cd captures a stunning performance by the two lead singers, who both have strong voices. This opera deals with love, war and betrayal. If you enjoy listening to opera, then this cd is an essential addition to your collection. There is lots of emotion in the music.

2 out of 5 stars Price is wonderful, but nothing else is.......2005-09-18

This was my first Butterfly, bought in the Sixties, and so Leontyne Price is imprinted in my min for this role, one she neer sang on stage. Her voice is really too big and lush for Cio-cio San, but that hardly matters given her ravishing singing. What does matter, unfortunately, is the stiff, unyielding conducting of Leinsdorf and the trumpet-like bawling of Tucker. both are so bad that it is hard to listen to this set anymore, especially with so many fine alternatives around.

        5 out of 5 stars This is a keeper........2001-09-21

This recording is the best of the best doing the best in Madame Butterfly. It is difficult to find the best recording of Madame Butterfly, which from start to finish is a continuous and integrated dose of Pucinni's most beautiful music. As Madame Butterfly requires a soprano who can SING AND ACT, the best performace is any decent live performance. That's probably why a DVD version is not yet available of this opera. This CD contains the highlights of Madame Butterfly and the highlights are perfectly done by Richard Tucker, Leontyne Price, the chorus and the orchestra. Don't let the age of the recording scare you off, I and others have found that many recordings done originally in RCA's Living Stero have transfered excellently to CD.

With a good sound system or with a portable CD and earphones, you can hear the characters' voices move across the stage as they act their parts, the instruments of the orchestra have their very distintive voices and even the knife clattering on the floor is undeniable.

A friend lent me this recording with the warning that it is extremely addictive. I couldn't give it back to him until I had a copy of this CD of my own and I already had a copy of Madame Butterfly on VHS and an excellent CD version of the complete opera. Borrow this CD from a friend, you will buy it. As an introduction to the opera experience or just as a temporary opera "fix", this CD of Madame Butterfly is the best investment you can make.

5 out of 5 stars A Butterfly Puccini would have loved.......2000-12-27

Many have written regarding Leontyne Price's classic portrayal on the recording. RCA has re-released the highlights again in new packaging and updated sound....and as always it is a treasure. I have lived with this recording since I was a kid and it is still and always will be my favorite of this opera. I listen of the highlights CD even a little more than the complete recording. Funny, I still have my old mono Dynagroove LPs too. If I was ever asked for a Desert Island Discs list, this would be on it.

5 out of 5 stars Highlights From The RCA Classic Leontyne Butterfly.......2006-01-10

This CD is a highlights disc, lifted from the RCA recording of Puccini's Madama Butterfly starring Leontyne Price, Richard Tucker and Rosalind Elias. For curious audiophiles, this serves as a perfect FIRST BUTTERFLY. The sound is phenomenal. During the climaxes, such as the final portion of the first love duet in Act 1, climaxes during Butterfly's arias and especially in the Finale, the music is bursting with bombast and grandeur. The speakers in my home were surrounded by sheer tonal beauty and majestic audial splendor. Maestro Erich Leinsdorf trained his orchestra well and his soprano quite well as it was Leinsdorf that contracted her for RCA. The rest is history. Leontyne would go on to sing for other RCA opera recordings like Aida, Tosca, Trovatore and La Forza Del Destino. As Butterfly, she is supremely dramatic. Some critics snub her Butterfly because they felt she was reduced to melodramatic qualities, and that she could not wholly convince as a frail, love-sick Japanese teenager. Technically it's true. A light-lyric but powerful voice is required to most dramatically satisfy as Ciao-Ciao San. But because the role is so juicy and the opera is so popular in the repertoire of any opera company, all sopranos want to take on the role. Heavy and dramatic sopranos like Maria Callas, Montserrat Caballe and Renata Scotto have portrayed Butterfly. But Leontyne has the right Puccini voice, and lyrico-spinto abilities perfectly capture Butterfly's femininity, sensibility, strength and weaknesses. Her Butterfly is strong, but she is able to sing with sweet pianissimi and dulcet tones, as well as more invective tones. She has a passion that no other soprano before or after gave to Butterfly. Note how lush and sumptuous the Entrance Aria "Ancora Un Paso" is and how intense and electrifying the Un Bel Di, and the aria right before the Flower Duet is. The finale in which she commits hari-kiri is powerfully moving and thunderous. American tenor Richard Tucker sings with loud, brash, American gusto and with elegance and bravado to boot. He is a perfect Pinkerton, careless and cruel but oddly romantic. Listen to the opening aria "Duvunque al mondo" to see what I mean. This same technique is applied with even more expression in "Addio Fiorito Asil" in which Pinkerton learns at last his grave mistake of abandoning Butterfly and marrying an American wife, dishonoring her forever. The rapport between Richard Tucker and Leontyne Price (and conductor Leinsdorf) is truly evident in this magnificent recording. Rosalind Elias is a mature, stately Susuki, singing the role more like a motherly figure. She sings the role better than any other mezzo I know, except perhaps Teresa Berganza. Fans of Leontyne will definately want to own the whole recording available on RCA.
