Jordie Savall and Hesprion XX do it again. I've yet to hear a CD of his that I didn't love. Most of my collection of 15th-17th Century music is English, French, German, and Italian, and I am happy to see the Spanish masters taking their place alongside them.

4 out of 5 stars A good addition to an early music library........2006-12-10

Here we have an interesting sampling of early European music from the Middle-Ages to the Renaissance. The selections vary from dance music, carnival music, and music for more formal events. Its an even distribution of both instrumental and vocal pieces. As is most often the case, much of the music is of anonymous origin. The geographic origin is mainly France, Spain, and Burgundy.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Early Music Lovers!.......2005-06-12

I bought this CD about a year ago, and truly enjoy going "back in time" as I listen to it. As a collector of medieval manuscripts and books, I listen to this CD while studying and admiring my collection. Each track truly adds that special touch of actually being there at the time these manuscripts were created. The vocals are authentically done, and the compilation of music from each country and century are beautifully arranged on this CD. Listen, and travel through three centuries with this CD, and you will surely be taken back to the court dances held inside, and outside, the ancient castles of those times.

4 out of 5 stars Good intro to early music.......2001-01-12

I've always liked this recording for the variety of pieces it contains: Italian, Spanish, German, Burgundian. The main drawback is that they only have one singer - some pieces with vocal harmony would have been nice.

1 out of 5 stars insensitive to the medieval repertoire.......2000-12-13

The renaissance pieces are satisfying enough, but the medieval selections are treated so poorly as to be insulting. In the light of newer recordings, this album falls flat track after track. The musicianship is coarse, the singing inane, the arrangements crude. Such performances only perpetuate the image of the middle ages as a cultural wasteland, which demonstrates ignorance and lack of perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Good Early Music :-).......2000-07-03

I really enjoy listing to my copy of this album especially while surfing the net or playing Age of Kings. I turn off the game music and listen to this instead - Hey the game IS set in the Middle Ages ;-) Also good for playing while reading fantasy stories set in pseduo-european middle age worlds! I wish I knew alot about music so I could post a learned and studied review. All I can say is I really enjoy this cd and am very glad I bought it. I have since ordered more music by the Early Music Consort of London as I the more I listen to this cd and similar music the more I want to hear it!

For more good early music I really like Ensemble Unicorn and Sonus.

Other recent King's Singers' recordings on this label have reaffirmed the ensemble's credentials as compelling advocates of contemporary music. Here, only the most hardhearted of early music purists could fail to find the infectious cocktail of popular and religious Spanish music--largely 16th century--going to their heads, even if the King's Singers add the occasional theatrical embellishment. The music (much of it by "Anon") is organized into five categories, among them "fire" and "water" (with the alternative implications of ardor and alcohol). Of the named composers, none takes the ear more readily than Mateo Flecha the Elder. His La Bomba, one of several lengthy ensaladas (miniature music dramas), steals the show, with its comic tale of a bunch of sailors' impassioned but shallow prayer for deliverance from shipwreck. Elsewhere the moods range from pious to bitter-sweet melancholy--and just try to keep your feet still in villancicos such as Rodrigo Martinez. Those familiar, warm Harp Consort textures contribute markedly to the overall richness of sound. --Andrew Green

5 out of 5 stars The King's Singers work their magic again.......2006-01-28

Having been a fan of the King's Singers since my teenage years, which are growing ever more faint in my memory, I am sometimes surprised that they still surprise me. And yet, they always do. There is something quite magical about their voices - not just their individual voices, which are all wonderful, but what happens when you put them all together - the whole is definitely greater than the sum of the parts. They have hit upon a great formula, which will hopefully be around for many more wonderful recordings.

The other thing I love about the KS is how well they do different styles of music. Their technique on this is superb - the pronounciation, the intonation, all of it is right on the money. Yet they also manage to "take off the viking hat" (as my choral director likes to say when we're switching styles) and do the Beatles without butchering them. It's really quite something to behold.

This CD is a great introduction to the classical side of the KS, and a definite must-have for any current fan. The pieces are beautiful and exciting, they all complement each other wonderfully, and the whole thing is just a joy to hear!

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT INTERPRETATION.......2005-03-06

I am a fun of Spanish Renaissance Music and I found this recording extremely good! King's Singers shows their abilities once again!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2001-01-05

I am a huge fan of Renaissance music, and I have to say, this recording is truly outstanding! The blend, dynamics, style and tone really need to be heard to be appreciated. The addition of the Harp Consort to this already superlative group also gets a big "thumbs up" from me. And Stephen Connolly! Oh, be still my foolish heart!! What a voice! The most resonant I can remember hearing! The selections by Mateo Flecha will make you laugh out loud, but my personal favorite - at least, for the moment - is "Aleph, quomodo sedet sola civitas" by Padilla. The extremely musical performance and the chill-producing display of dynamics makes this piece sound like it is performed by a choir of many more than six! I highly recommend this CD to all who appreciate quality music.

5 out of 5 stars Great fun!.......2000-04-07

This disc is the king'singers' second release with the current lineup (Hurley, Short, Phoenix, Lawson, Crouch, and Connolly) and is in my opinion the better of the two. Paul Phoenix, k's tenor, has told me that he much prefers the blend and sound on this disc to that of Street Songs. The singing is superb, and is ably supplemented with the playing of the Harp Consort. This disc is also great fun to listen to! You will be pleasantly surprised by the variety of textures heard here. The disc starts out with a solo track by 2nd baritone Gabriel Crouch, and also includes small-group tracks as well as full-roster pieces. Anyone who has caught their April 2000 tour has likely heard "La bomba" by Mateo Flecha, recorded on here. It is obvious that the k's had great fun making this recording! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A feast of little known music from the Court of Charles V.......2004-09-25

In 1557 Luis Venegas de Henestrosa composed a "book" of music using themes from other composers (Spanish and Flemish) for the Court of Charles V, the most powerful ruler in Europe. (He was not only King of Spain and Flanders but also the Holy Roman Emperor, with dominion over much of Central Europe.) The Harp Consort, lead by Andrew Lawrence-King has captured this music in a lavish performance on period instruments of Spain. The result is 70 minutes of sheer pleasure. My favorite is the 10 minute long "Diferencias sobre Conde Claros" -- a set of variations based on a famous Spanish medieval poem of love (discussed in Don Quixote) which had been set to music by Valderrabano.

The harpsichordist is amazing. Who is this "anonymous master"? Please post the answer here if you know. Cabezon tientos are rarely so vivid. If you like this recording, you will probably enjoy the Cabezon compilation in a similar vein by Trio "Unda Maris." (La ma de guido: LMG2014J)

        5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2002-12-02

Unlike he previous reviewer, I have no wide experience in Early Music. I am tasting it for the first time. I never would have heard of Cabezon had not his organ music been recommended by Classical Net. This CD does not contain any organ music. Naxos does offer 4 organ works by Cabezon on Early Iberian Organ Music. Despite my surprise at the lack of organ music, I must say that I was not disappointed!! In fact I played the program again, immediately; I was in awe of the elgant beaty. The notes to the CD provide a neophyte a proper introduction to the composer and his times. It argues that as composer favored by the royal court may have arranged his keyboard works into chamber pieces that employed the instuments of the time. Even though he lived alost 100 years before Bach, I was most reminded of Bach's Brandenberg concertos when listening. This CD will take a permanent part in my collection. Thanks to Naxos for providing a way to experience music that I might have never heard at prices that won't challenge my limited financial means. At any price though this CD would be a must have.

        5 out of 5 stars they've surpassed themselves again!.......2001-08-07

The ensemble on this CD -- variously known as Accentus, Unicorn, and Oni Wytars -- is easily the most formidable medieval-renaissance instrumental ensemble in existence. I'm not just a rabid fan who's never listened to anybody else: I have methodically surveyed hundreds of early music CDs before arriving at this conclusion. If you haven't heard their name trumpeted by early music critics, it's probably because said critics are desiccated scholars instead of impassioned musicians (like most of the performers they critique). Accentus's main concern is the emotive capabilities of their instruments, and the four core members (Michael Posch, Marco Ambrosini, Riccardo Delfino, Thomas Wimmer; they're not listed in the notes for this release) are among the very few truly brilliant early music players. The heavy polyphony of Cabezon cramps their style a bit, but their phenomenal spirit shines through track after track. Many of their performance decisions on other albums are odd or less-than-historical; luckily for purists, though, "Tientos y Glosados" is straight and unmannered. It's the best of both worlds.
