What's not to love about this album? When I first saw this album with its cheery pink cover&colorful musicians,I thought,"Looks great!" It would be a long time before I got it.

"El Baile Aleman" is a hilarious, campy lounge album perfect for relaxing,writing--or on gloomy days. The opening "Showroom Dummies" is a funny version;I assume it's superior to Kraftwerk's original. It's a joyous cha-cha-cha.It even made its way onto the soundtrack of "Y Tu Mama Tambien." "Trans Europe Express" sounds like a cheery jingle from the '60s--or something from "The Incredibles." "Homecomputer" is a homage to the personal computer, back when it was the new thing--recast as a frothy merengue."Autobahn" is a rollicking cumbia merengue. The closing song,"Music Non Stop" is a cumbia that makes you wish the album were longer (it clocks in at less than an hour)

"El Baile Aleman" is perfect lounge music. It needs the advisory label-do not take seriously--it's meant to be fun!

5 out of 5 stars Senor Coconut... the best... and it's from my country!.......2003-02-13

[...]i'm from chile and since a couple of month i had never heard about Uwe Schmidt (Senor Coconut). I started listening to him and then someone told me that he lived in Santiago, Chile. I bought the record inmediatly (i'm a big Kraftwerk fan). The cd is awesome. Here in chile we do not listen to salsa or rumba or cha cha cha.. that's in the center of america. Here people listen other stuff. This guy is a german person, he married a chilean woman and came to live here. this is a pretty famous guy, but nobody knows him here. it's funny. he started to make this kraftwerk covers, and made an imaginary band "Senor Coconut y su Conjunto". This "conjunto" do not exist. this is only Uwe Schmidt making music here in chile.... well i hope now you know a little bit more about Senor Coconut... [...]!

5 out of 5 stars JUST EXCELLENT..........2003-02-07

Fantastic homage to Kraftwerk by Senor Coconut Y Su Conjunto. Wonderful blend of Latin rythym and electronic music that puts me in a trance. It can be played loud or soft and still work. My favorite picks are "Showroom Dummies" and "Neon Lights". I just love it and will keep an eye on this talented group. Highly recommended. Very highly.

5 out of 5 stars Cool.......2002-10-26

This album is just so cool. I heard this for the first time in my favourite bar where my favourite girl-dj used to play some soft, lounge and just cool music two years ago. She was so sweet and whatever she played it sounded like honey.. erm however..
Tonight I took up this cd and played it again.
To make a long review short. I that know telling you this is an awesome album won't help you at all to get the idea about what this album is like.
However if you read this you're propably a listener with good taste whether it's kraftwerk or salsamusic you like.

Simply put, Senor Coconut's makes some awesome covers of the most famous Kraftwerks titles in a salsa/rumba/samba/whateveritscalledmusic/style.
Kraftwerk is a pioneer group that never goes out of style whatever happens to the musical "trend" and Senor Coconut'just makes something new with a material that's timeless.
The result is both intresting and a pleasure to listen too.
Though it's strongly recommended to be a Kraftwerk fan to appreciate this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Rhomboid, Rhineland Rhumbas.......2002-05-03

Like Moby's Play, this obscure gem is destined to work it's way into the mainstream. The inclusion of Showroom Dummies on the Y Tu Mama Tambien soundtrack has hooked in the loft dwelling, taste makers of Tribeca. Next stop, Volkswagon commercials? Maybe the new Mini.
Get this wonderful reinterpretation of Kraftwerk's music and join in the conga line.

    5 out of 5 stars Pifarro's Best Album!.......2003-07-08

Although Pifarro has released some wonderful stuff in the past couple of years, "Los Ministriles" is still, in my opinion, their best offering to date. Simply, this recording is a delight, and although I've heard it dozens of times, it always remains fresh and enjoyable upon each re-aquaintance. There is something about music from the Spanish renaissance that sets it apart from almost anything being written in Europe at the time, and Pifarro captures the fun, spontanaity and pure beauty that this music exudes from note one. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, syncopated music from Piffaro, the Renaissance Band........2002-11-25

The full title of this album is "Los Ministriles: Spanish Renaissance Wind Music", and it features a wide variety of genteel and folksy tunes that would have been played by multi-instrumentalist minstrels employed by the nobles and clergy of the time. Originally founded in 1980 as the Philadelphia Renaissance Wind Band, Piffaro took its current name from the Italian version of "Pfeifer", or piper. And indeed, this group boasts a wide variety of wind instruments: entire families of shawms, recorders and crumhorns; along with sackbuts, a bass dulcian and various bagpipes; accompanied by Spanish essentials such as harp, vihuela, guitar and percussion. The lively and intricate syncopation of Renaissance Spanish compositions lends a distinctive character to this CD in comparison with the group's other releases, which are also very good. Try their Flemish and German recordings too--"A Flemish Feast: Flemish Renaissance Wind Music" and "Stadtpfeiffer: Music of Renaissance Germany".

5 out of 5 stars Renaissance Music is Anything but Boring!.......2000-03-20

I will admit an immediate bias for this recording, as my Renaissance Music instructor's husband is one of the players. However, leaving that fact out entirely, this disc, like all of Piffaro's recordings, is a joy. I listen to them everywhere, especially when I need to stay awake on long drives. To hear such difficult ensemble instruments as shawms, krumhorns and recorders in a resonant environment, played perfectly in tune is rare. This particular disc ranges from organ-like works for recorder consort to rousing dances like ¡Si abrá in este baldres! Unlike CDs that contain lengthy masses with no lighter interludes (although these are equally gorgeous, especially the Gabrielli Consort's Moralès Mass for the Feast of St. Isidore), Piffaro's CDs are widely varied in terms of instrumentation, style, tempo and inflection. I have played this for many people who claim to not like early music and have had much favorable response, not to mention the personal enjoyment and sheer fun!

    4 out of 5 stars Fun music.......1998-11-21

Much of this CD is typical Renaissance music with period instruments: a delight to listen to, but sounding a lot like other Renaissance delights. What I found really unique is that this is the first selection of Renaissance music which I'm familiar with that includes bagpipes among the instuments. Crumhorns and sackbuts are nice but familiar; the bagpipe selections blew me away.

5 out of 5 stars MY FAVORITE CD!!!!.......2007-02-11

Let me tell you - I bought this CD twice because the first one got scratched up so bad I couldn't listen to anything. I LOVE LA NEF!!! My 132nd wish is to see this troupe live in concert!!! :D

Okay. "Music for Joan the Mad" is about musicians stuck inside the queen's chamber trying to appease her insanity. If you read the bible - remember Saul & David? Sort of the same theme, only he had demons and she's just crazy.

I LOVE THIS CD...nothing could appease this woman. She was mad because something happened to her love (her husband) and it drove her crazy. So she won't leave her chambers or the castle and insists on being entertained in her room.

At the end of the cd, she's still crazy but you will fall in love with love with this troupe!!

        5 out of 5 stars A Mysterious Treat Honoring a Mythical Queen.......2007-01-25

This music is amazing to listen to, to absorb, to live with, and the story behind it, which is on the liner notes and I do not recall in exact detail, is also fascinating. (When I get my ordered copy, I'll update this) Apparently, the legend these musicians are recreating in their modern imagining of the Iberian music, is that of a queen who was called Mad by her husband, and put into exile. She so loved music that her musicians chose to go into exile with her, and play for her, rather than leave her to live alone. The songs, even if you don't know the translations, suggest melancholy, rebellious, defiant joy in the midst of pain and loss, and the defiant beauty of art in dark times--the constant strength of voices and songs that can transmit anywhere, with passion.

        5 out of 5 stars Almost perfect..........2004-12-03

If you enjoy early music, and you are not a purist, but just looking for pleasure, you must get this CD. This is NOT the music that Colombus was playing while sailing across the Atlantic. No. This music is the smartest artifice, the most intelligent mix of powerful rhythms and cultural influences. Get it.

5 out of 5 stars Enter another world..........2003-05-27

Wow. Few CDs have ever struck me as much as La Nef's "Music for Joan the Mad" has. It was the album that introduced me to this remarkable group that recreates medieval music so we can hear it today.

"Music for Joan the Mad" would be categorized as "Spanish Classical". During this time (around the late 15th century) Spain was at its height, and the music was very regal and flowing, also influenced by Arab traditions. Indeed there are many Arab influences on this album, from the beautiful instruments (I think I heard an oud on one of the tracks) to the wonderful vocals. La Nef has truly recreated the glory days of Spain.

Whenever I hear this CD (and that is often), I always imagine myself walking through a 15th Century Spanish castle, the stone walls echoing with the plucks of guitars and the melodies of a soprano. If you're even remotely interested in transporting yourself back in time, listen to the sample tracks and buy the CD. You won't regret it...

4 out of 5 stars Music to lie down and die to.......2002-03-05

When one finds an ensemble of musicians who have chosen a time and a place to honour, or replicate, or interpret with skillful passion, take note and investigate for yourself what distant scenery could inspire artists so.

Joan The Mad deserves such respect. I hardly review or rate albums, but this particular one deserves a notation. The album begins on a sordid note that is the doorway to an ancient place of exotic sounds blended with classical givens. The Moors have made their mark on this Iberian album that gives a sense of ancient Arabian masters feasting with their Spanish hosts.

Pause to open this doorway and enter a forgotten time and listen to music classical in genre, yet forever a stranger to the ears.

4 out of 5 stars a trip back to the chapel.......2007-06-08

Having visited the Taize Community two years ago, this is a wonderful way to recall the quiet spirituality that was such a part of the three daily prayers services. It ignited memories of that week, and also helps me find that Presence I need to meditate as I did then.

            5 out of 5 stars Blessed music.......2005-10-22

Taize style music is very popular among college-age worshippers today, and our Centre for University Ministry regularly offers Taize services. The hallmarks of Taize services are simplicity, peaceful spirituality, and music based upon the chant styles of the Taize monastery in France. Founded in the aftermath of the second World War by Brother Roger, who died in a prayer service in the midst of the community in August 2005, Taize is dedicated to peace and ecumenical action.

Taize music is both simple and sophisticated. Brother Roger, founder of Taize, seeks to add a prayerful element to music, and a musical element to prayer, believing firmly in the old dictum, 'those who sing, pray twice'.

The songs of Taize are designed to be sung by those who have difficulty carrying a tune, as well as those whose training and background in music extends to high levels.

This recording contains many of the best Taize chants. Given the international outreach of Taize (it is a great pilgrimage site for people all over the world), the chants tend to be sung in Latin. The Latin is not due to Catholic influence as much as it a shared language among many people's linguistic heritage while no longer being anyone's first language. Brother Roger reclaimed Latin as a language for the monastery so that no one 'living' language would claim a dominance over others. However, it is a feature of Taize chant that it can be adapted to other languages very easily.

Taize worship relies on psalms heavily, as well as periods of silence, Bible readings, and prayers. Some such pieces are included here.

The way Taize chants 'work' is that they are simple phrases and simple tunes that gradually reveal depth and sophistication by being repeated over and over. All chants presented in this text are put in multiple-part harmony (usually four-part), and some are marked to be done in rounds.

This recording is a rich expression, wonderfully presented. According to Brother Roger, all who follow this journey of the spirit remain alongside other people, adding their prayers and voices together. 'They do not separate prayer and commitment.'

5 out of 5 stars Haunting Renaissance music.......2006-07-03

I saw a performance by the Globe Theatre that included a wonderful 5-piece English Renaissance musical ensemble. I went looking for some music like that --- music that included viols, lute, wind, reed, and percussion instruments. The particular sound wasn't easy to find, despite a plethora of English Renaissance CDs. This album of Spanish music from the 15th and 16th centuries actually came closer to the sound I was looking for. It alternates between haunting minor key melodies --- pavanes and the like --- and faster, livlier dance tunes. They're a wind ensemble, but there's actually a tune for solo lute. A lot of variety in a memorable and reasonably priced CD. I highly recommend it. (Although I hope Piffaro will consider recording a CD of English Renaissance music!)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, as usual........2005-11-16

'Los Ministriles, Spanish Renaissance Wind Music' is, I believe, the Philadelphia band, Piffaro's second or third album and I really find it more enjoyable than their parallel album on Italian Rennaissance music. The instruments are virtually identical, with a fair mix of stringed instruments added to round out the sound, but I really enjoyed the overall listening experience more. So, if you are unfamiliar with this band, get this album before the Italian or French albums.

This is an interesting contrast to the works of Begona Olavide and the Eduardo Paniagua Group' of which Olavide is a member. This Spanish group specializes in Medieval and Renaissance stringed instruments. And, from a purely subjective reaction, I prefer their work to Piffaro. I also think their scholarship is more interesting, but then, they are all Spanish, and Spanish specialists, so that is to be expected.

The visceral preference may be the only one worth banking on.

Worth the money, Olavide and Paniagua may be greater value.

            5 out of 5 stars Absolutely gorgeous!.......2005-03-21

A magnificent recording with enthralling melodies that will lift up your spirits. The bagpipes and flute pieces are simply wonderful. In quality, variety and every other aspect, Los Ministriles is certainly comparable to "Sinners and Saints", the great amazon.com Renaissance dance music favorite, the only difference being that this CD only contains instrumental music (no songs).

It is just too bad very few people are aware of it.
