Album Details

1968 Release. Talented Actress and Popular Music Singer, Better Known as Sarita Montiel, Became One of the First Sex Symbols from Spain to Attract Hollywood's Attention with her Captivating Performances. In the Early '50s, Montiel Settled in Mexico and Began her Singing Career While Working Along with Pedro Infante, Manolo Fabregas and Agustin Lara. In 1954, the Acclaimed Actress Had the Opportunity to Work Along with Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster. Montiel Rose to Latin Music Stardom with the Release of El Ultimo Cuple Movie Soundtrack. During the 1970s, the Multi-lingual Star Toured the World Leading Celebrated Musicals.

This is the soundtrack from the 1968 film "Esa Mujer" directed by Mario Camus,based on a script by Antonio Gala. "Esa Mujer" is doubtless one of the best Sarita Montiel vehicles ever but the subject here is the CD so I will limit my comments to this product hoping that one day we will have the film, fully restored and digitally remastered in DVD format.
The CD for "Esa Mujer" has great stereo sound, perfectly balanced. The sound does justice to Greg Segura's plush arrangements and conduction of what sounds like a full symphonic orchestra. No tacky computer-faked instruments here.
Since the songs were picked to serve the film, there is variety in the contents. From the traditional Andalusian folk genre we get "Soledad, la Caracola" and "Canta Guitarra". But you also get the beautiful Rafael de Leon ballad "No Volvera Aquel Amor" and a Manzanero bolero "Contigo Aprendi" both sung with sex and feeling as only Montiel can.
Maestro Segura, who also wrote the original score for the movie, took the "love theme" from the film and developed it into a haunting, dramatic song which he titled "Sola" and Montiel's rendition is both believable and heartbreaking. On the up side you hear the delightful children's song "Cantando el A.E.I.O.U." which many claim is a ripoff of "Do-Re-Mi" from "The Sound of Music". In "Esa Mujer" Montiel plays a nun who teaches children how to read. Rip-off or coincidence? Basically these are the songs from the Sarita film but there are four others added to fill the album: two Manzanero evergreens "Voy A Apagar La Luz" and "No", a funny love ballad titled "No Me Preguntes Amor" and "My Lonely Heart Needs You" a sad love song which Sarita sings in her very own English.
In all this is a great medley of themes and styles united by Segura's musical genius and the unique singing of Sarita Montiel.
