Wonderful band who deserve a wider audience.......2006-03-18

La Barranca has been a successful ongoing outfit for about 10 years now. Based in Mexico City, they are led by guitarist and songwriter Jose Manuel Aguilera, who previously and concurrently worked with Sangre Azteka, Jaguares, Cecilia Toussaint, Steven Brown/Nine Rain (Tuxedomoon), and more. He has an unusually economical style of playing that concentrates on great rhythms, superb tone, and very melodic solos. This 2nd edition of the band includes Santa Sabina guitar virtuoso Alex Otaola and the extremely flexible rhythm section of Jose Maria and Alonso Arreola. The band effortlessly moves from flat out rock to fusion-ish jamming and passes through a kind of Mexican folk influence along the way. Aguilera is a good singer with a talent for finding simple melodies amidst rather complex songs. On "El Fluir" the band decided to record live and to cut back on the keyboard and programmed additions to their music. Surprisingly, the result is not an over-the-top jamfest but rather a very tightly arranged set of songs that hint at the overwhelming power they will posess in concert. As always, the two guitar interplay between Aguilera and Otaola is not to be missed as they exhaust all forms of playing together and against one another (with Otaola pulling all sorts of radical sounds out of his guitar). "El Fluir" is their first US release since "Tempestad" in 1998. This edition is further sweetened by the inclusion of a previously unreleased bonus track and a video for the first single "Para de Sufrir."

Magnificent.......2006-03-16

After five incredible albums and one maxi single and with 10 years with this concept, "La Barranca" presents to North American listeners their latest album, "El fluir", originally released in Mexico last year.

For every album, the band always tries to come up with a concept or a main idea to describe the whole project (Take for example "Tempestad", an album in which all songs were somehow related to the tempest and the sea); for this album all music for it was recorded live on studio, with the four musicians playing live, hence the name "El fluir" (which refers to the flow of music in this case) After many changes in their alignment, it was for Denzura that Jose Manuel (guitar virtuoso with years of experience and a very impressive resume), Alejandro Otaola (another great guitar performer), JoseMa (in the drums) and Alonso Arreola (an awesome and charismatic bass performer) recorded their first album together and remain as the best alignment of the band so far (after Denzura came "Cielo protector" and now "El fluir"). The way these four artists have fit with one another is just unbelievable when you see them playing on stage.

From the very opening of the album you will be dazzled, "Dormir sin miedo" opens the album abruptly and does not prepare you for what you are about to listen. Then we have "El fluir" which gives name to the album, an strident rock theme with a haunting rhythm and guitar riffs throughout the song. Then comes "Zafiro" as a homage to our dear Toña la negra, in which Jose Manuel Aguilera shows us all what he's made of, the feeling with which he sings and his powerful voice make this song one of the highlights of the album. "Ser un destello" is in my opinion the most representative song of this album, heavy, perfectly executed by the 4 members and again, Aguilera performs incredibly in this song. "El cinturon de Orion" is another highlight in which the drums and the guitars are the stars of the song (check it out for an amazing guitar laughing). And then we have "Hendrix", a great song that per the band's comments served as an excuse to perform as Hendrix did, the musical arrangement at the end of the song is just incredible (when live, they add "Purple Haze" to this portion of the song)

Bottom line, 12 incredible songs from what I consider the best Mexican rock and roll band, these are great musicians true to their ideas and concepts. If you are a music fan this is an album you just cannot miss. The NA edition contains an extra track (El Asombro) I have not had the pleasure of listening as well as the video for "Pare de sufrir" which was the fist single released. If you enjoy this album I would very much recommend listening to Denzura which is a very similar album in certain ways but in a more experimental fashion. Though in my humble opinion the best album so far is still their debut album "El fuego de la noche" recorded 10 years ago, every time the band plays it in concert is still unbelievable even tough they have made new arrangements.

An excellent opportunity for you all in the US to listen to this band, a great album indeed that will make you want to own the rest of their discography.

Mexico's best kept secret.......2006-03-14

If you've heard about 'Rock in Espanyol' you've probably heard the same 5 names, all of them bands promoted by major labels. I had the chance of listening to LA BARRANCA play this show live and you can quickly tell why the majors can't handle THIS much music.

This guys have the same broad palette as Los Lobos (both bands feature 2 incredible guitar players) but this album focuses on the grittier side since the cd was recorded 'live at the studio' (something less and less bands can acomplish nowadays). So, imagining a charged up Lobos' KIKO is somehow a way to describe this album.

As in Los Lobos, with the lyrics you get a Dylanesque portrait of Mexico and with the music you get a real fusion of latin and rockin' sounds instead of the current cut'n'pasted latin pop. No wonder this guys have worked outside the latin mainstream. The band has been around for more than ten years and the chemistry between them shows, they're all marvelous players and we're talking here about taste, not speed (it would be cool to put out a dvd of a complete live show... this cd has a bonus track and bonus video by the way).

One of these songs should someday become a 'hit single' and expose this guys to a bigger number of listeners... maybe on a soundtrack... THIS much music deserves it.

In the wake of the multiplatinum-selling Buena Vista Social Club, Cuban music has become hot. This album might borrow the BVSC concept of gathering musicians of different generations together, but--while the names aren't as widely known (with the exception of Buena Vista alumnus Juan de Marcos Gonzalez)--the music glistens just as brightly, covering a similar territory of son and bolero and offering an extraordinary pianist in Guillermo "Rubalcaba" Gonzales. His two contributions, "Oguere" and "Rubalcaba," show him to be as talented as Rubén González. Still, there are no slouches here; all four singers are superb. Young Luis Frank shines on "Longina," a duet with Juan de Marcos, sparingly accompanied by tres. The title track, Frank's homage to the Havana barrio, is a tour de force, picking up the torch of Cuban traditionalists Sierra Maestra and running with it. I recenlty bought this CD by Soneros de Verdad and can only recommend it to lovers of Cuban music. It has songs in all the traditional genres of Cuban music - son, bolreo, afro, guajira ... all in superb quality of musicianship.

Additionally it has nice thick booklet with details on musicians, photos, and all the lyrics. Plus it's both in Spanish and English - very valuable for someone like me who's learning Spanish!

Yo no habia oido mucho de Fulanito antes de comprarme el CD. Por eso es que fue tan sorprendente cuando el CD estallo en mi casa. El problema que todos los que compren este CD van a tener es el que yo tuve, se quejo un vecino mio porque lo estaba poniendo muy alto!
El merengue y reggeaton de Fulanito tiene un sabor y energia sin igual. Mucho de eso es por tener un gran sabor con un toque de hip-hop, mezclado con su estilo ripiao(con accordeon). Gracias a este disco buen numero de argumentos he tenido yo con un amigo mio gringo por decir que el accordeon es instrumento de nerd.

DIANTRE!! Much better than hyped!.......2004-07-23

A great album that I'm sure will be slept on. It is better than El Hombre Mas Famoso De La Tierra and Americanizao, and just about as good as El Padrino, if not better as well. From beginning to end it is just pure perfection! Trai la bulla is the song you MUST play at festivals or carnivals. Suave is just that: smooth, first GOOD reggae song that uses accordion well.Picante has that seemingly trademark Fulanito sound found in "La Novela", & "Asi Es Que Vivo Yo". Pegate is THE song of the Summer house party no doubt about it! Ricardo Gutierrez shows off in this one, and it is great! Todavia is a reggaeton/bachata produced by DJ Nelson, who is notorious in the reggaeton genre, responsible for bringing in the monsters Luny Tun & Noriega, the track is very sentimental and carries very well, especially when it climaxes into Jay "El Boricua"'s Solo vocals. Gozando vivire is that song that you will skip the first time you hear, but the second time around you'll find yourself repeating it, they used a loop of a Salsa called "El Preso" and turned it into reggaton, they honor it with a "Oye!" and a "Ay-ay-ay" here and there as homenage to the original that had those expressions. Diantre is THE theme song for this album because that's all I could say track after track, just Diantre! Its Reggaeton with more Hip Hop-like aspects to the beat, Dose "EL Morenito" makes a stand when he warns his competition that "Mis mala palabras son como balas, siempre se pegan y nunca fallan: A mi no me tire que te vas a estrallar... For real!". DIANTRE! Feliz Cumplea?os sounds like they are going back to their "740 Boyz" roots, it is a very unique love song that also has that "La Novela" Feeling, its fast paced and has lyrics that you can get drunk and sad to, aparently he celebrates his ex girlfriend's birthday even though they're not together anymore. La Verdad the title track is a slower paced merengue, a remake of Johnny Ventura's classic, with just the right touch of Fulanito goodness, very addictive track! Mala Mala, is a Fulanito perico ripiao that has classic written all over it, "Tu nunca me querias so why you want me now". Reguero de mujeres is my favorite track on the album, another perico rap, it features lyrics from Pickles "El Gordito", Dose "EL Morenito", and Danny "El Chulo" who makes a ground shaking introduction of himself. And finally Bump and rub reencarnates the Americanizao sound with a cameo by King De La Rosa who was on every other song back in the day, and produced by Winston "El Chiquito" and Dose "El Morenito", which would explain why it sounds reminiscent of "El Generalisimo". They make reference to Dose's first track "Wiggle it" from 1991 when they went by "2 in a room", the track sounds like a victory dance of a job well done, an excellent way to close an excellent album! ITS PERFECT! Buy it! And while you're at it, buy El Padrino, Americanizao, El Hombre Mas Famoso, 2 in a room's Wiggle it & World Party, and 740 Boyz self titled album! You Will love them! I DO! Two Thumbs Way, Way Up!!!

It makes me sick how unknown this band is. This is where you know there are too many politics in the art of music.
For any music lover this is essential.
I can only compare it to the vocals of Caifanes, a rock sound, but slightly electronically fused?! violins...

I believe Denzura to be a rarity; it is among the most profound works by a living artist today. I compare Denzura with Mahler's 9th, Chopin's Funeral March Sonata and Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsy, due to it's sheer beauty and relevance to our own century; a century we still share most intimately with Gustav Mahler..

Hey! If you are going to buy a merengue cd, you might as well get one that doesn't lack energy. Beleive me, Grupo Mania doesn't lack any energy, they are one of the tightest and hottest merengue bands around and this cd is pure Merengue dura from beginning to end, 100% picante gaurenteed!!!

Este nuevo disco de Grupo Mania esta excelente. Tiene unos merengues super pegajosos, con los ritmos que caracterizan a Grupo Mania. Tambien tienen unas canciones al ritmo del sabroso reggaeton. El Cd esta bieeeeen bueno, y se los recomiendo a todos. Si te gusta el merengue, el reggaeton, o simplemente la musica latina buena, este disco es para ti.

Eddie's hit-making streak continues........2003-07-10

After recording two very sucessful, Grammy-winning albums (1984's "Palo Pa' Rumba" and 1985's "Solito"), Eddie Palmieri scored another winner with this one. Not as inspired as its two above-mentioned predecessors but still a fine album.
