While the Buena Vista Social Club was a new recording sculpted by producer/guitarist Ry Cooder, the popularity of it means that earlier classic recordings by those musicians are also seeing the light of day. The Hecho En Cuba series is among the strongest of such offerings. Skewing a little toward older material than the other two collections, the third volume once again features recordings by Ibrahim Ferrer, Eliades Ochoa, Omara Portuondo, and even salsa queen Celia Cruz. But the real treat is unreleased material from Compay Segundo ("Lupina" and the playful "Oui Parle Francais") and Ruben Gonzalez ("Nuestra Cancion" and "Prestame La Cicicletta," which show the late-pianist to be sharper and more upbeat than in his BVSC years). The rest of the songs here aren't as big a revelation, but new and classic material from the giants of Cuban music in this post-9/11 era--a time when Cuban music has again become a rare commodity--is always welcome and damn near a necessity. -- Tad HendricksonLatin Music:
