wow 3 inches of blood have literally turned the page on their music. People like traditional metal, you can come up with anything and even if its the same thing we love banging our heads to it. 3 inches on their last album stayed too focused on a style that many still like but has not quite grown to our generation. these are awsome screwed up canadian guys that i met in montreal...they are nice....and its good too know that there not just some wannabe punks wen u listen to their music!!!!!!

I didn't think they would be able to top Advance and Vanquish.... but they did. A&V was probably one of the best metal albums of all time.... THIS IS THE GREATEST!!!!!! I have pretty much stopped listening to other bands since this album came out. I used to love Maiden / Priest etc.... I don't even bother with them anymore. This is truly all I need.

Hands down... This is the best metal album of all time.

DAMN!!!.......2007-06-28

This is probably one of the best albums ive heard in a while(after Horse The Bands "A Natural Death"). I saw 3 Inches live last year and i thought their music at the time could not be out done but for once i was wrong and im happy for that, because this album went above and beyond any of my expectations. I talked to the lead singers and they said it was due summer of 07 and anxiously i waited and once i got it it was well worth the wait. And on top of it they added akeyboardist to the mix... f***king awesome.

Awesome album! Very well produced and the band plays to their strength's. I picked this band a couple years ago to hit it big and i was right. A mix of thrash, death, hardcore and power metal.

Great Songs and Great Sound.......2007-06-27

I have always been a fan of both Styx and Night Ranger and a major reason for that has been the fact that these groups actually play music in their songs...not just a few power chords behind the vocals, but melody and counter melody, and intricate instrumentation. And I have been a fan of the work Shaw & Blades have done together in the past, so this was an easy purchase for me to make. And I was NOT disappointed.



The songs they chose to cover are all great songs. Reading the liner notes was very interesting to hear how they decided to approach each song, and let me say that my opinion is they did it right on every one. Some they left alone, some they changed up a bit, and they all work well. So good, fact, that not only do my wife and I love it, but my 3 year old and 7 year old daughters love it, and ask to listen to it over and over again. Best cd I've purchased in a long time.

The standard by which ALL Latino music should be measured!.......2007-04-10

Though I grew up on the Lower east side of Manhattan I was never much into Latin music or Salsa. My brother however is a fanatic and gave me this album back in 1979 with a dedication in Spanish from Ruben Blades! Needless to say this has become an heirloom.

As for the music, upon hearing the songs I was instantly struck by the fact that this did not sound like any other latin music I'd ever heard. The Lyrics were actually meaningful, uplifting, exhorting! The masterful music infused with Willie Colon's breathtaking orchestration will take you away to musical bliss. All of this while accomplishing the impossible; EVERY song can be danced to yet simultaneously meditated on. The thought provoking lyrics will have you rethinking your role as a Latino while tapping your feet.

There is no filler on Siembra. There is not one bad song on the album. My 15 year old just heard it recently and was blown away, a testament to this true Masterpiece that will live on for decades.

One of latin music's most important recording!.......2006-05-25

This is the new remastered edition of this classic Willie Colon recording featuring Ruben Blades on vocals. The lyrical aspect of this recording has been covered elsewhere so I'm not going to dwell on it besides metioning that most of the lyrics deal with the political reality of the "latino everyman."
The reissue has all the original cover art and an appropiate essay covering the significance of this recording. The only drawback is that it didn't include the lyric sheet or additional tracks. I'm sure that someone, somewhere has to have outakes from these sessions. Maybe these things will come as a part of a box set of another "commemorative" edition once everyone involved "gets paid."
Otherwise, the sound is louder, more focused and a bit cleaner. But again as with some of these new Fania remasters, the top end is rounded off to eliminate hiss. I find that bothersome, but I'm just being picky.

I'll have to say first, I didn't know what to expect when I bought this CD. I bought it after I heard Influences. That was an excellent (cover song) effort in it's own right. I am very glad I did take the plunge. For those who like original, real electric / acoustic rock with good vocal leads, harmonies and solid, talented musicianship, this a CD is for you. It is not a rehashed Styx, Night Ranger or Dam Yankees mix. It is a bit lighter than most of that music, but very good none the less. It starts right out with the 2 excellent cuts and maintains a high degree of quality throughout. This is no partially talented and/or half-baked attempt to make a few bucks CD either. It's a well recorded CD, with songs crafted by an accomplished, talented duo with Steve Smith on drums. The songs range from outstanding to good. No fills or bummers here. I would have liked to see it a bit longer (more songs). And that's a compliment of sorts too. It was that good. But it's not easy to write a full CD's worth of good songs. This CD is well worth listening to.

I've never written one of these and probably won't again unless Shaw Blades releases another like Hallucination. Guys, the covers are nice, but why do I want to listen to what I already know when you are capable of producing your own original (and excellent) work. To the listening public: buy this one, enjoy it and join me in beating the drum for MORE!

Two Righteous Rockers Team Up For A Dynamic Duo.......2007-04-27

On HALLUCINATION, Tommy Shaw (Styx, Damn Yankees) and Jack Blades (Night Ranger, Damn Yankees), team up for a session on which they play all instruments except drums, which are handled by Steve Smith. This CD is much lighter in sound than their previous bands' music was, and is, with songs espousing the idea that camaraderie and friendship are more important than trying to impress the opposite sex by wearing clothing made in countries which convict foreign tourists on false charges. Given the fact that Shaw and Blades both advocate sanctions against Indonesia in retaliation for that country's trumped-up 2005 drug-smuggling conviction of a young Australian tourist, that can hardly be seen as a surprise. Shaw's and Blades's views on this issue make HALLUCINATION an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

I'm a huge styx fan and a huge Night Ranger fan I love these guys' Damn Yankees work as well as their other side projects. This is a fantastic album by 2 of the best musicians to come out of their generation.

If you like Damn Yankees, you'll probably like this CD. It's not quite as heavy, but Shaw & Blades complement each other really well and the tracks are all solid.

Rubén no es un hombre de boca nada más como el tipo este aclara. Un ejemplo de sus acciones lo son su lucha por sacar la marina estadounidense de Vieques P.R.. Otro ejemplo es, el cancelar sus presentaciones por asistir al entierro de Tite Curet. Sabes quien fue Tite? No pero sabes quien fue Celia Y Gloria Estefan. Supiste que Rubén tambien tocó en una carcel de Puerto Rico con Bobby Valentín. Mi hermano, Rubén ha realizado dos conciertos en P.R. con Willie Colón, a los cuales he asistido. Así que Rubén Blades no es un hombre para bochinchar sobre el, sino para seguirlo en su rumbo. "Usa la conciencia latino, no la dejes que se te duerma, no la dejes que muera" Todos los discos de Rubén valen la pena. Viva Panama!.......2003-11-11

Y'know, I was fortunate enough to visit Panama for my Honeymoon. We vacationed for about 3 weeks throughout this luscious isthmian oasis.

My (now) ex-wife is from Da Bronx NY via Colon, Panama.
I was completely in-love w/ her... and Oh, what a knockout!
So it's no surprise that I became deeply interested (and ultimately patriotic) with her homeland.
I was THE honorary (gringo) Panamanian for awhile>ha! ha!
It's a truly beautiful country and they've offered so much to this planet's growth & progress on many levels.
For hours at a time, she & I would listen to old Fania records together... Of course she loves Ruben!

I must also mention how my Dad turned me onto Mr. Blades back in the day. As a young musician, he directed me towards the intricate (yet flowing) arrangements, cascading (yet memorable) melodies and very thoughtful (and politically right-down-my-alley) lyrics of Ruben & his worthy constituents.
Alone one night in NYC, when dashing back to the bar at a Gilberto Gil concert, I ran into Ruben. He was simply sitting there talking to a few friends. I was nervous, yet poised to talk to him. I explained how I felt about his music and politics. We had a very cool chat...What a genuinely NICE GUY!!! :-) Feeling guilty, I got his autograph for my (then) wife. She was pretty envious of my experience.

There isn't a whole lotta continuity in this post of mine. But hey, I'm just reflecting on some vivid thoughts. Memories of a man I greatly admire, whose music will forever remind me of the woman I cared so much about...

Brilliant except for 2 cuts.......2001-12-13

Buscando America - the title cut is just absolutely amazing. It literally brings tears to my eyes sometimes when I hear it. And I don't even speak the language. So I apologize if i'm missing some of the beauty in the lyrics. I'm coming at it purely for the music, arrangements, and emotion. The music is just brilliant and the singing is emotional and evocative. I'd probably ball like a baby if I could speak the language.

Padre Antonio Y... is a great cut as well. Some of the music (on the album) is extremely sophisticated and particularly engaging.

Cuts #2, and #3 don't really turn me on that much but all the rest are great stuff. That's the reason for the 4 stars rather than 5. But still... Highly recommended

desde que escuche pedro navaja ,ruben blades me parecio un musico totalmente diferente a los centroamericanos que conocia. este cd es para mi su trabajo mejor logrado. Con lindas melodias describe las realidades tan variadas y terribles de nuestra querida tierra americana. Como argentino, el tema desapariciones, que es mi predilecto,me atrae en la melodia y me recuerda en su tan descriptiva y realista letra los terrribles momentos que vivimos. Pocas veces se puede oir una narracion tan acertada sumada a una musica atrayente. Creo que es un CD indispensable de tener para todos los latinos sin diferencias de paises.

Ruben Blades has long been a Latin music superstar, though this album confirms suspicions he may be feeling constrained by the expectations of the genre. While others have tried their hand at the transcultural "world music" soufflé Blades masterfully whips up here, few have achieved the inviting, warm results the Panamanian vet delivers on Mundo. But Blades wisely never loses sight that however far his musical curiosity takes him, he can still only filter the results through the prism of his own experience and traditions. Thus, there's an elegantly deceptive sense of the organic here, whether covering the Pat Metheny/Lyle Mays anthem "First Circle" (which showcases Brazil's Boca Livre and Costa Rica's Editus) or the traditional "Danny Boy" (which seamlessly fuses Celtic and Afro-Cuban influences with help from Lupa Mason and her soaring soprano). Blades also pays tribute to Brazilian songwriter Gilberto Gil with the glorious harmonies of "Consideración" (a passionate reworking of Gil's "Oriente") and infuses the Malian traditional "Jiri Son Bali" with mambo rhythms. But the album's most subtle cocktails issue from Blades' originals, from the gypsy homages "Parao" and "Bochinches" (the latter fueled by savory, Havana-meets-Tangier flourishes) to the reflective, jazzy "Ella" and "La Ruta," and the joyous Uilleann pipe-tinged "Sebastian" and the romping "A San Patricio." Ruben Blades "Maestro".......2006-05-28

Ruben Blades "Mundo" is a tasty cd. I compare Ruben Blades to Jet Li in that both are professionals in their craft and they are both at the top of their game. True, some of the pure salsa is gone at moments during this beatiful album, but not really. His band are excellent musicians and there are moments when priceless grooves are achieved.
Ruben Blades trascends with this album your average performer. His lyrics are universal in their theme and if there is one message to be had is this: We are all the Human Race, where music is concerned the universality of the human spirit is all that matters. Is the kind of album that at first you might be mildly dissapointed and critical. But once you take the tour again these jewels start shinning and I decided Ruben Blades is far too talented to put out a bad CD and that is so good to know. He belongs in that special group of artists that always satisfy the listener, always deliver quality. There, 4.5 stars for "Mundo" and 5 stars for the man himself. Long Live Ruben Blades!!

No es un clasico Ruben, pero esta buenisimo!.......2006-02-25

No es un tipico disco de salsa del Nueva York de los 70 y ello parece incomodar a algunos puristas, ya que al parecer el senor Blades cometio el pecado de romper las etiquetas y se ha atrevido a explorar mas alla de un solo genero. El disco se llama MUNDO, y de entrada la cosa no podria estar mas clara. Con este disco, Blades ha demostrado que no solo es un excelente salsero, sino un gran musico y compositor.

Si les gusta la salsa dura, pero de la misma manera disfrutan de un buen tango de Susana Rinaldi, del flamenco del Camaron, del samba de Beth Carvalho o Martinho da Vila y de otros generos que la mal etiquetada "world music" nos ofrece, entonces este disco les encantara. Si eres un fanatico de las liricas fuertes y ritmos poderosos que hicieron famoso a Ruben Blades, te advierto que probablemente no te va a gustar. Si quieres comprar salsa que sale fuera del area geografica normal compra "Salsa Around the World" o "Mandali" del grupo Africando.
Lo que tenemos aqui es un animal completamente differente. Suena como algo sacado para peliculas de Disney World. Mi punto es que el cambio de instrumentos y estilos toman el mando poniendo a las raices de la salsa en una posicion de menor importancia. Es musica de verla tocada en una universidad en vez de las discos salseras de Miami.
Obviamente le gusto a mucha gente, pero no creo que casi ningunos sean aficionados salseros.

Blades's Dark Horse.......2003-09-16

This is Ruben Blades's "dark horse" recording. A disc full of political allusions and full of the pain of loss (his mother had recently passed away). Standouts on this disc are: Apagon (Blackout), which criticizes both the American invasion of Panama but also the corrupt Panamanian society that accepted it; Cilindro (Cylinder), which chronicles the true story of an energy company that dumps nuclear waste in the Chilean countryside; and Adan Garcia, the bitter-sweet story of a desparate poor man trying to get out of his poverty; and West Indian Man, which talks about his own English/Caribbean roots--his grandfather was English (contrary to what many Spanish speakers insist Ruben's last name is pronounced in English, not "BLAH-des; this fact comes from Ruben himself in an interview on National Public Radio)

Blades's music, though based in salsa and Afro-Latin rhythms, is not for dancing, but steadfast contemplation and social action.

Capaz es uno de los discos mas personales de Ruben.. Se podria decir que Amor y Control es el mejor tema del disco. auque pienso en ti haya sido la mas difundida. Hay que tomar en cuenta el segundo y tercer tema.. Dedicados a su madre. y al cilindro. Lo maravilloso de ruben es la duracion de sus letras... Uno las puede escuchar 10 años despues y parecen escritas ayer..

Esta produccion, entendida en el contexto en que fue hecha, es otra de las grandes producciones de Ruben (una de las mejores en mi opinion). En ellas imprime una fuerza extraordinaria en musica y letras que llaman a la reflexion sobre la vida, la sociedad de ese entonces y de ahora y una vision interesante sobre la Conquista de America, rememorando el quinto centenario.

I have not been put on this planet to celebrate pan-Hispanic culture, but what can I say? This collection of toons makes my teeth sweat. The power of the vibe here is nuclear, I kid you not.

Ruben's output over the years has been patchy from where I sit, but he makes not a wrong move in this collection. The Son del Solar are gods one and all.

Buy this platter and feel the power.

RUBEN'S BEST WORK........2004-12-30

ALTHOUGH NOT THE FIRST ALBUM I OWNED OF RUBEN, CERTAINLY THIS ONE COMBINES HIS POWERFUL MESSAGES WITH ONE HELL OF A PERFORMANCE BY THE BAND. THE ADRENALINE STARTS PUMPING FROM THE FIRST SONG AND LEAVES YOU DANCING AND WANTING MORE BY THE END OF THE NIGHT. IF YOU OWN JUST ONE RUBEN BLADES CD, THIS ONE IS IT. BTW, the first time I bought this cd, some of the tracks didn't play well on ANY cd player. I noticed that only a partial album is available at i-Tunes and that the same songs that gave me trouble are the ones missing from their list too... maybe mine wasn't the only bad copy out there

Ruben Blades and Son de Solar Live!.......2003-08-11

Ruben Blades and Son de Solar's Live! is a refulgent live album. I have the tape version containing an extra track on it-Patria. Son de Solar sounded remarkably well. It is not surprising since Son de Solar is one of the best concomitant bands Blades can have: Marc Quiñones and Izbarra-I misspelled his name but nevertheless one of the best timbaleros in Latin jazz-taking care of the rhythm section.

Live! segues through most of Blades' Elektra -post- FANIA days repertoire starting with Decisiones and with the denouement of laudatory live renditions of Patria- cassette version only- and Muevete. The latter is a Los Van Van song showing Blades' openness to the seemingly modern and `electric' Cuban rumba. Blades' sonero voice is timeless as usual. The downside is that Live! seems to come up short and that might be explained because it is missing FANIA classics- except for Pedro Navaja. Notwithstanding, even without the FANIA classics, this album is filled with worth post-FANIA exemplars.

Cascarino's "Blades of grass" is a masterpiece of 20th century music.The cd is worth it just for that one work. Overall the works on this cd are well composed, melodic, tonal, well organized and beautifully orchestrated.

I totally agree with the two previous reviews (although I think Mr. Morrison misses the beauty of these pieces) - they are slow, "serene", but this is beautiful music beautifully played. Hats-off to Fanfare Magazine that convinced me to purchase a CD by a composer I was not familiar with, Naxos for its continuing commitment to recording every composition ever written, and to Ms. Falletta and her fine orchestra for making this wonderful music available to the audience that Mr. Cascarino never had.

Twentieth century classical music in the tradition of Ravel, Faure, Copland Delius, Britten and RV Williams. Lush and complex, rich and melodic , somber and uplifting.

Cascarino's works may one day be receiving more attention and scheduled on more programs as an outstanding example of American 20th century polyphony.

Romantic American Orchestral Music in the Barber/Copland Vein.......2006-10-07

Romeo Cascarino (1922-2002) was a basically self-taught Philadelphian who labored in relative obscurity. Of the six works recorded here five are first recordings. And some of the music had never been played before. Cascarino worked for many years as a respected teacher of harmony and composition at the now-defunct Combs College of Music in Philadelphia. His compositional style is completely tonal and sometimes comes across as a blend of the styles of Barber and Copland. This CD contains his six works, with few exceptions all dreamily serene.

'Pygmalion' (1956) recounts the Greek myth of the sculptor Pygmalion and his infatuation with his own marble creation, the beautiful Galatea. It was intended as a ballet and has been staged only once, apparently, in Philadelphia in 1959. A companion piece 'Portrait of Galatea' (1945) preceded the ballet by four years. This recording is from the first performance ever of that work and of its predecessor 'Prospice' (1945) which was written just after Cascarino returned from service in World War II. 'Prospice' is based on the Browning poem of that name, which opens:

"Fear death?--to feel the fog in my throat,
The mist in my face,
When the snows begin, and the blasts denote
I am nearing the place,
The power of the night, the press of the storm,
The post of the foe ... "

Its first measures have harmonies redolent of the Copland scores of the previous decade.

'Blades of Grass' (1945) is a seven-minute mini-concerto for English horn, harp and strings. It was inspired by Carl Sandberg's 'Grass' which is 'a meditation about men dying in battle.' The plangent lines given the English horn soloist are melancholy in the extreme and are played here beautifully by Geoffrey Deemer, principal in the Philadelphia Chamber Players. (A note about the orchestra used on this recording. The Philadelphia Philharmonic is an ad hoc group whose core is the Philadelphia Chamber Players; its roster is extended by use of some of the many fine free-lance musicians in the Philadelphia area. They sound marvelous.)

'Meditation and Elegy' (2000) is an orchestration for strings of two piano pieces Cascarino wrote in his teens. Both pieces are slow and meditative, with lush string sonorities and often modal melodies. 'The Acadian Land' (1959-60) was premiered in a shortened version by the then New Orleans Philharmonic. It was inspired by Longfellow's 'Evangeline' and of course had particular interest for the Louisianans as their Cajun culture is based on the Acadian culture of Nova Scotia. 'The Acadian Land' is contemplative and melancholy.

Most of the music here is fairly slow. The main up-tempo bits are in 'Prospice.' Admittedly the texture and harmonic language of these works are lush and romantic, but more than 75 minutes of ruminative music might be a bit much for one sitting. Still, the playing of the Philadelphia Philharmonic under JoAnn Falletta is gorgeous and the music qua music engaging. Most will, I suspect, find themselves becoming tranquilly contemplative on listening to these works.
