A Most Relaxing and Peaceful Collection.......2007-07-01

This album was my first introduction to Fernando Ortega, and I'm absolutely hooked now. This has to be one of the most peaceful and relaxing collections I have ever heard. The melodies are beautiful and the words are so simple and pure (most are direct quotes from scripture). I even use it in my 3 year-old son's bedroom for lullabies. These songs make you think and reflect on God and His Son. I particularly like how Fernando blends scriptures from the Old and New Testaments into one song (Let the Words of My Mouth). I am an oncology nurse, and at the end of a stressful work day, I can listen to this in my car, and I am instantly refocused & refreshed. I wholeheartedly recommend this album - you won't regret it!

A Deeply Worshipful Album.......2007-02-24

I have grown to love Fernando's work. As I get older, I enjoy his music--it really draws me into God's presence, especially as I'm reading the Word or praying. Not all Christian music does that for me, but Fernando's does.

This album is wonderful, its pensive, thoughtful. I really sense that Fernando means what he says, that he's deeply into the music and not just creating another CD.

I really recommend this CD, it really helps draw you into the heart of God.

Fernando Ortega has entitled his fifth major-label album Storm, which is cleverly appropriate when you consider the atmospheric feel of his record. Throughout the mix there's a quiet clarity of soft piano, rhythmic acoustic guitar, and even strings reminiscent of George Winston or Jim Brickman. The airy "Light of Heaven" is one of the most accessible tracks and draws comparison to Ortega's biggest previous hit, "This Good Day," from his 2000 Home release. Throughout Storm there's sonic tension, as Ortega's minor-chord verses offset big, shiny choruses. "Our Great God," a majestic and powerful praise and worship piece cowritten with Third Day's Mac Powell, carries the most potential yet falls a bit flat. You can catch a more muscular version of the song on the second City on a Hill release. One of my favorites.......2007-05-29

It is not unusual for an artist to have one quintessential recording that documents them at the absolute peak of their creative talents. For Fernando Ortega STORM is that recording. Every cut is a gem. I love this album so much I've tried hard to develop a similar affection for Ortega's other music. Perhaps it's because STORM is so special I've found that hard to do.

Note: Be sure to check out 'Our Great God' with Third Day's Mac Powell on lead vocal on the third 'City on a Hill' album. It's even more powerful than the version here (Powell sings back-up).

Few other Christian artists have such an expressive touch with language, and the way Ortega uses his, in a down-to-earth, deeply lyrical way, when combined with his almost ethereal yet also rooted voice, should be heard by everyone at least once. With elements of country rejuvenated by Ortega's fresh folk outlook, the sound of this album redeems the ideology of rural America. And, also like rural America, his words can take on a nobler theme, rooted in tradition, poetry and history, as in the profoundly moving "City of Sorrows". Everything from the willowy sound of a close-to-nature life to the complex relationships between people, and further to the weighted history embraced by Christians everywhere, all is treated here, and lifted up in gratitude. Profound and peaceful, this album will impress anyone who lends it a serious ear.

A dear friend gave this CD to me several years ago. I have cabinets full of CDs, but this is my favorite. My son travels by air over 2000 miles to university, and the first time he left home, this CD was playing on the way to the airport. It was dark and spitting snow. The first track, Traveler, touched us profoundly. We have played that song each time he has left home to return to college. He graduates next week. Music is a huge part of our family's life, but this particular CD has changed us forever. This music will change your life. It is that important. Storm is one of the only sure things in this world.

Storm is a great project for a variety of reasons. Musically, it is pure Fernando Ortega! I love the way he brings many different styles together to make a wonderful sound. Content-wise, Storm is good for the world-weary soul. Songs included:

I had the privilege to see this artist at Anne Graham Lotz' Just Give Me Jesus revival in New Orleans, where he led our worship...she said when she first heard his singing, she had to go prostrate before the Lord. Great Performance, Bad Recording.......2005-09-24

I wish there were 2 ratings: 1 for artists' performance and the other the sonic quality of the CD recording. In the case of this CD by Fernando Ortega, I would rate the former at 5 stars while the sound quality of the recording is rated at 1 star (sounded too artificial and bad studio mixing) which marred my enjoyment of this otherwise great performance.

This is a CD that we play daily because of the words and vocal quality of Mr Orgegs's voice. It is a superb recording for those who appreciate the "old" Hymns of the faith (and some that aren't so old). This is definitely a 5-Star recording.

Thoughtful, worshipful music approved for just about all musical persuasions.

Fernando sings calmly and puts the listener in a contemplative mood. The CD will not disappoint those that need to just sit, relax, tune out the world around them and just focus on the Lord.

Favorite track is 'Jesus, King of Angels'.

This is a great CD I like listening to while studying the Word.

I love Fernando's voice. His musical style is so uplifting. I go to bed every night listening to his voice, which is passionate and soothing. I wake up every morning to the sounds of Fernando as well. Every track on this CD is excellent!! Another Ortega gem!!

Old Friend.......2005-03-06

I have been a collector of Fernando's music for years. This was the first CD I bought those many years ago but it has not grown old but only matured with me along life's road. I would consider this collection an investment to be enjoyed and that, I feel, will go along with you along your life's road and that you will appreciate each selection in a new and deeper way each time you listen.

Without a doubt, this is the most perfect and flawless album I have ever heard. With every listen, it seems to get better; with every listen I am more amazed.
In terms of sheer musical quality, this album is tops. Every note and nuance is perfectly planned out, every sound the exact needed to complement the mood; creating a type of sountrack to each story or praise. (With a musician list comprised of such names as Bob Somma, Cameron Stone, Stuart Duncan, Greg Leisz, John Andrew Schreiner, and of course, Fernando himself; it's no wonder).
Lyrically, this album is awesome. Not only excellent theologically, the verse also creates a rich tapestry of imagery that effectively transports the listener into its many scenes.
If you do not already own this album, buy it. It will be the best purchase you ever made.

Best hymn singer I know.......2006-10-24

I've listened to many songs before, but boy, no one can sing hymns like Ortega. His voice would not be as good for other contemporary Christian music but is just perfect when it comes to hymns. I've actually bought many of this particular CD as gifts to my friends. Other CD's of his are so so, but this one is my favorite. I'm about to buy some more.

His Best Album.......2005-04-14

This is a great album to meditate to. It's so relaxing and welcomes the Holy Spirit into the atmosphere. The way he sings you can feel the love of God in his voice. This album is truly a blessing to my soul. If you desire an album that will bring you closer to the spiritual realm. This is it!

Learn the lyrics of track 1, then sing them to the Lord from a pure heart while listening - you'll NEVER be the same!

I'm tearing up as I type this.

I buy this CD in lots of 5 and 10 at a time any more because I always end up giving them away to people I want to bless.

This CD such a rich blessing! In my opinion even unbelievers could come to faith by listening to track 1.

And yes, the entire CD is awesome too.

Life and Worship Rich and Full.......2006-11-16

This album is on of the finest Christian albums available. It represents rich new territory for Fernando Ortega without neglecting what he has done so well in the past. Ortega canvases the whole range of life experience from a well thought out Christian worldview that never degenerates into the drivel that marks so much of CCM.

"California Town" is romance at its barest essence without sappy sentimentailty, but sentimental nonetheless in a good way. One will be suprised at "Dragonfly" and "When the Coyote Comes." The songs are hard to classify which is good. Each has a bit of a bluesy, gospel flavor and a country-pop twang to boot that will leave your toes tapping every time. They may be the best songs of the lot and certainly the funnest.

The next three songs, "Sleepless Nights", "Shame" and "Noonday Devil" expresses a realist sort of spirituality that grapples with the difficulty of the Christian life. The songs do not wallow in self-pity, reductionistic ditties or the sort of psychobabble that passes for Christian reflection so pervasive today. "Sleepless Nights" calls the anxious heart to hide in Christ. "Shame" deals with the harsh reality of failing to meet false expectations that drives so much of our behavior. Shame from real guilt is good and leads to repentance. Shame from false guilt is crippling. "Noonday Devil" is a clever stab at mortifying the flesh and temptation. To do battle with sin, we must despise it with a holy hatred.

"Mildred Madalyn Johnson" is a wonderful little song that seems so out of place in our self-absorbed culture. What I like about this song is the lost art of paying the homage and honor that our elderly citizens deserve. What a tribute to grandmothers so dearly loved. Switching gears, "All That Time" expresses the difficulty love must endure in relationships if it passes the test of time.

Fernando Ortega is perhaps the best hymn revivalist of our day. No one has treated the hymns with such sensitivity and care for their treasures. "Rock of Ages" and "Immortal, Invisible" are no exceptions. As good a lyricists as Ortega is, I think he realizes that he cannot match the depth of orthodoxy and orthopraxy that the classic hymns have achieved. One must especially meditate on these two selections, saturating your mind with their truths almost with the same intensity and devotion one would to the Scripture itself. "Immortal, Invisible" is one of my favorite hymns. When I heard this rendition I was immediately enraptured with its beautiful yet haunting melody. I will never sing that hymn again without thinking of Fernando's wonderful adaptation.

"Take Heart, My Friend" reveals more of the heart of Ortega's godly spirit. It is a salve for the soul of the fainthearted believer who wonders if he'll make it. He will - God promises to complete what He began, and He uses fellow believers as divine encouragers to the task.

The album concludes with a final hymn, "More Love to Thee" written by Elizabeth Prentiss. Any Christian woman who has read her fictional diary of the struggle for womanly godliness, "Stepping Heavenward" will aprreciate this famous hymn she wrote as well. We thank you Fernando for reviving it.

Well worth a listen!.......2006-08-05

As of this review, the CD "Fernando Ortega" is one of the more recent releases by the performer of the same name. The contents are a mix of Christian-themed songs and more general tunes. The style is more contemporary/mainstream sounding than some of his earlier releases, but retains Mr Ortega's distinctive style. From light-hearted tracks such as'California Town' to deep (and somewhat dark) selections such as 'Shame' or 'When the Coyote Comes'; this CD covers a wide range of feelings, emotions, and thoughts. The Christian-themed lyrics express a balanced view of the inner workings of the human soul, reflecting both the inspirational and the 'desperational', the certainties and the doubts.
This CD is a treat for the ear and the mind.

Fernando Ortega is amazing in this album, especially with the songs "Sleepless Nights", "Mildred Madalyn Johnson", and "Take Heart, My Friend".
It took me four years before I bought a Fernando Ortega CD, and once I did, I was floored. I have since bought most of his CDs, and I recommend that you don't miss this one.

Highly inspiring, even for an atheist..........2005-03-14

I'm an atheist as you can see in the title, but this CD went straight through my heart anyway. I heard "Mildred Madalyn Johnson" in the car driving home from work abroad and I immediately bought the album online the next day (availability of this album in Dutch record stores is poor).

This album is a true gem, a masterpiece when it comes to music, lyrics and sonics. For me, the stand-outs of the album are "California Town", "Sleepless Night" and "Mildred Madalyn Johnson". If this music doesn't move you, I don't know what will. The music and lyrics have the rare combination of being refreshing yet familiar at the same time, but in no way boring. You can play this over and over and get exited about it every single time you hear it.

An album like this only pass by once every couple of years; Grammy winning material but will probably be ignored by the mass market which suffers from an overall lack of musical taste anyway. Fernando Ortega, keep up the good work for us who DO care about music!

Ortega continues to be my favorite composer/singer in the Christian music field. This album is just another of his inspiring works. The vibrantly picturesque lyrics of the first track, "California Town", always take me back to my days at the ocean-side towns in Central America; the sights, the smells, the sounds. Tracks 4-6 are the heart-felt cries of a heart reaching out for God through difficult times of spiritual testing, an echo of that for which so many of us have cried. "Take Heart My Friend" is saturated with encouragement in its purposeful reminder that "The Lord is with us as He has been all the days of our lives/ Our assurance every morning/ Our defender in the night".
This CD has had a permanent home in the CD changer in my car ever since I bought is several months ago. Fernando's lyrics/music always seem to speak my own heart and my prayers!

BEGINNINGS by Fernando Ortega is a 2 cd set featuring selections of some of the "early" recordings of this great pianist primarily drawn from four albums: Meditations of the Heart, Meditations of the Heart Encore, Hymns and Meditations, and Night of Your Return. While many of these cds are available for purchase online, it is nearly impossible to find them in your typical Christian music store.

Of the thirty-four songs on the album, seventeen are instrumental.

Songs from Meditations of the Heart include: Sacrifice of Praise, Living Water, Morning Star, Family, I Love To Praise Your Name, and As For Us. (Six of the ten songs on the album)

Songs from Meditations of the Heart Encore include: I Remember Well, It's Your Love, Tossed On The Wind, Teach Me Thy Way, and Creation Sings. (Five of the eleven songs on the album).

Hymns and Meditations: Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, Near The Cross, Softly and Tenderly, Nothing But The Blood, and I Need Thee Every Hour/Just As I Am/ Come Ye Sinners Medley, What Wondrous Love Is This, Con Que Pagaremos, Brethren We Have Met To Worship, Sacred Head Now Wounded, and Nearer My God To Thee. (Which appears to be the entire album of Hymns and Meditations)

It also seems to include all the songs on Night Of Your Return as well. With two complete albums and two partial albums, BEGINNINGS is well worth the price and is a great addition for any Fernando Ortega fan's collection.

This piano music is wonderful. His style simple but beautiful.

This album is a masterpiece.......2005-04-10

This was the first Fernando Ortega album I listened to. I kept playing it over and over. My wife and I have probably listened to it a hundred times. It is artistically, technically and spiritually the best Christian album I have ever heard. I later went out and bought four more of his albums, and they are all great, but I still go back to this one.

Looking for Christian Meditation? This Is Your Music.......2004-11-06

After seeing Fernando Ortega on Christian television, I went hunting for some of the songs I'd heard. As it turns out, I LOVE this CD, for meditation and contemplative time. Being a depressive sort, I go into my time, with the positive and uplifting "This Good Day", and am deep into sincere prayer, as I sing, with the CD, "Pass Me Not". By the time this CD is over, I'm relaxed, DE-stressed, and regrouped, ready to go on with whatever is to come. Therefore, if you're looking for something calming, soothing, and yet positive, this is the CD for you.

Pleasent, but kind of boring.......2003-04-23

Home is better than Ortega's previous CDs, in that there are a few tracks with a faster beat and upbeat tune. His music tends toward the safer, "mild" worship sound that winds up putting you to sleep. This album, however, has some good stuff on it. "This Good Day", the first track, is a happy, upbeat song about thanking God for this good day, even if the day isn't that good after all. "Old Girl" is a milder, minor-key portrait of an old woman. The poetry is fine, for it paints pictures in your mind of the old, proud woman who nonetheless will pray for you. "On the Line" touched me, whether it is a combination of the lyrics or the melody, but I was surprised to find myself playing that track over and over. And then Virgina Rose is the Other Good Track. Upbeat with a strong country violin strain, I'm sure it will wind up on a Greatest Hits album sometime in the future. I consider the rest of the album "boring and tuneless", but then my tastes are inclined more toward Alternative.

If you're looking for an Ortega album with some good stuff on it, varied by his usual "quiet" style, then consider this album in your shopping.

Calm and Reverent .......2005-06-02

Ortega delivers again with his smooth vocals, melon-coly tunes, and worshipful lyrics. His music has a very personal quality because much of his writing is based on his own life and travels. The instruments are appropriately chosen for each song, creating a natural front-porch-hymn-sing style that refreshes the old goodies without altering them so much that we can't sing with him. Great harmonies for listening and for those who like to add their own. Highly recommended for all musicians and worshipers.

The other reviewers can tell you all about the details of this album. Fernando Ortega has lots of fans who give everything he puts out a "5," and he is very good. But this album is the one he received the Dove award for, and of all his albums I've heard (I have listened to more than half his stuff)for my money, this one is by far the best. Maybe it should be a "6." The mood created by this album is so wonderfully consistent from beginning to end -it is one of those rare works that will lift you up if you are too low and bring you down if you are too high. So if you are only going to buy one Fernando Ortega album, this is the one.

I was introduced to Fernando Ortega through a friend in Nashville, Tenn. who shared this CD with me. I immediately went home and ordered it. It has trully been a blessing to me. As a Minister of Music, I appreciate good music, and as a Christian I believe these songs speak to my heart.

Fernando Ortega has a relaxed, easy-going style, yet he displays a passion for the Lord which is evident on this CD. He takes traditional songs such as "How Firm a Foundation" and "All Creatures of our God and King" and puts them into new and fresh arrangements. He also sings his original songs such as "I Will Praise Him, Still" and sings of the human condition in "Anita's Heart". He is a consistant artist who always brings his special inspiration and love for the Lord to his song-writing and performing.
