For better or worse, Andrew Lloyd Webber's adaptation of Gaston Leroux's gothic horror/romance novel has done for stage musicals what Spielberg's Jaws did for fish stories, with worldwide sales of its original cast album approaching 25 million. While director Joel Schumacher's film turns on his typically ambitious visual verve, its new film soundtrack recording has been paradoxically focused in scope, yet beefed up dynamically via the brawny presence of a hundred piece orchestra and The London Boys Choir. This single disc version showcases all of Phantom's key songs (a deluxe, double-disc edition is also available), with Gerard Butler imparting a welcome, youthful sensuality to his Phantom, making a fine foil for Emmy Rossum's ever-conflicted Christine. Original show orchestrator David Cullen has fashioned compelling new contemporary arrangements to frame Webber's songs -- which now conclude with the lilting, upbeat new ballad he wrote for the film, "Learn to Be Lonely," sung by Minnie Driver. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.......2007-07-26
Perfect music!.......2007-06-11
First of all, let me just say that Emmy Rossum (Christine) sounds MUCH more elegant and true than Sarah Brightman (who overpronounces to the point of absurdity) in the classic London Cast recording of the musical.
Second of all, Gerard Butler may not be as operatic as Michael Crawford, but he is a much better actor, and the simple sound of his voice IS the Phantom. "Music of the Night" is so beautiful when he sings it, unlike Michael Crawford's mockery of the piece as he tries to sing those bass notes and just ends up mushing it all together into a horrible, overpronounced, over-legato MESS!
Now, Patrick Wilson! He has such a wonderful voice it just makes me faint! Wow! He is, I swear, the greatest tenor alive. Anyone who criticizes his beautiful performance of Raoul is simply insane.
This soundtrack has some utterly perfect music, such as
1. Gerard's incredible performance of "Music of the Night." He sings so beautifully at the end with that last "night" that one can scarcely believe it.
2. "Down Once More," the final scene of the movie can produce tears even without images on a screen. Hearing the three characters' voices together is sheer perfection!
3. "All I Ask of You" has wonderful emotion on all fronts, and Rossum and Wilson blend together into pure love. Bravo! Brava! Bravi!
4. "All I Ask of You (Reprise)"... It is so truly heartbreaking that I can never stop crying. "You will curse the day you did not do... all that the Phantom asked of you!" It has such a blend of emotion that one can only sit and listen, in bliss and awe.
This soundtrack, though missing some songs (get the two-disc set if you want them all), is basically perfect. I will love this music and these wonderful singers forever.

I plan to buy the movie in the near future. I highly recommend this soundtrack if you loved the movie.

It's fair to assume that if you're a Seal fan, you prefer your pop shot through with substance. Using that as a guiding principle, you'll want to glide right into Best: 1991-2004 where you will encounter, throughout two discs and 27 songs, scarcely a second of musical fluff. All the expected goosebump-raisers come on disc one--"Don't Cry" follows "Prayer for the Dying" follows "Kiss from a Rose" follows "Crazy"--and they're interspersed with deeper cuts from Seal IV such as "Get It Together" and "Loves Divine" as well as a couple of covers that, in a lesser vocalist's hands, might have been catastrophic. Seal plays it subtle and sweet and Burt Bacharach's "Walk on By," sidestepping any instinct to belt, and the help he gets from Mikey Dread on Echo & the Bunnymen's "Lips Like Sugar" settles the song into a snazzified reggae-pop celebration. (Also included is Seal's soaring cover of Steve Miller's "Fly Like an Eagle," which proved his prowess as a cover artist with its chart success). Though "best" collections aren't normally upheld for their surprise elements--nobody likes a package that challenges with armloads of new stuff--disc two pulls off a neat stunt. It's a complete acoustic album, again encompassing the major radio hits but stretching to include tracks like the impossibly tender "Touch" and the meltingly gorgeous "Colour." Their unplugged presentation, with the artist on guitar, sets an up-close-and-personal tone that suits Seal. More to the point, it suits his fans, who'll take all the intimacy with the singer-slash-heartthrob they can get. --Tammy La GorceAlbum Description
Multiplatinum selling, Grammy winning, critically acclaimed Seal unveils his first greatest hits collection with Seal Best 1991-2004. But there's even more-along with the single-CD edition, with original album versions of 12 of his hits and best-loved tracks plus a cover song newly recorded by Seal ("Walk on By"), a double-CD package adds a disc of newly recorded acoustic versions of nine of those cuts (and four others). For fans of the pop, dance, urban and adult contemporary, Seal Best 1991-2004 is the quintessential Seal experience.Customer Reviews:

An Everclear Fan Who refuses to buy this Album.......2005-02-25
I would have really liked to have seen some of their fantastic, less well known songs on this album like 'Sunflowers,' 'Amphetamine,' or 'White Men in Black Suits' off of 'So Much for the Afterglow', by far Everlears best album. Their inclusion of less well known songs from 'Sparkle and Fade' is good, but they really shortchange themselves on what they wrote during their early days on 'World of Noise'
Eveclear, I hope, is starting to show some hope. I believe that they have seen their last two albums for the failures that they are. Their sound has become extremely weak and uninspired, their lyrics a far cry from the smack-you-in the face stuff that they used to write. The only glimmer of hope I saw on their latest release, 'Slow-Motion Daydream' was 'Crysanthemum,' which heralds a very pure and stripped-away quality of acuoustic guitar, blended ever so slightly with effective sound effects of blowing wind and haunting lyrics. 'New York Times' is half way good, but is nothing that stands up above anything else that any unpublished poet or musician wrote to express their feelings in a post 9/11 world.
10 Years are definetly gone, and the last 4 of them are WAY gone. i hope you get your rear in gear Art. You've done it before, now do it again. I know '20 Years Gone' can be a much better shot.
Everclear's Best Of is a great CD for anyone to own........2005-01-12
This is a great Everclear best of CD. I am glad there are 21 songs and that it is almost 80 minutes long. There are 2 b-sides on here called Local God (from the Romeo And Juliet soundtrack) and The Boys Are Back In Town (a Thin Lizzy cover that was originally a hit off of the Detroit Rock City soundtrack). There are also 2 new songs on here that were originally recorded during Everclear's recording sessions for their previous CD Slow Motion Daydream. The new songs are called Sex With A Movie Star (The Good Witch Gone Bad) and The New Disease.
The songs and what I think of them is the following:
#01. Wonderful - This is a great pop sounding song from them. It is a big hit too. This is a great song to listen to when you are in a good mood. Even though the lyrics sound happy, they are not.
#02. Santa Monica - This is a great rock song from them with a great beat and great words. This is this first big hit and the song that made them famous.
#03. Everything To Everyone - This is another good rock song that was a big hit. This was followed by other hit songs that broke them into the mainstream music concious.
#04. AM Radio - This is another big hit with a 70's feel to it. It surprised me by how popular it became. This is not a favorite of mine off of here, but I like it. It is a necessity for this CD.
#05. Volvo Driving Soccer Mom - I like this song a lot. It was a hit but not a big one. This song did not help their CD Slow Motion Daydream sell well because not many people liked this song I guess or that album.
#06. I Will Buy You A New Life - This song was a huge hit. I think it was either this song, Santa Monica, Father Of Mine, or Wonderful that was their biggest hit. This is the song that broke them into the mainstream music concious and made them a household name. If you didn't know Everclear from their song Santa Monica off their CD Sparkle And Fade, you now did because of this song off their CD So Much For The Afterglow.
#07. Learning How To Smile - I don't remember this song being a hit. But it is another kind of pop song from them. It is not as good as Wonderful in my opinion. Both these songs can be found off of their CD Songs From An American Movie, Vol. One: Learning How To Smile, which is their most pop sounding CD.
#08. Strawberry - This song was a small hit. It is a slower song, but I like it and the acoustic guitar that you can hear throughout the whold thing. I like the words to this song and how well they go with the music.
#09. Local God - This song was a hit in Austraila. I am not sure if it was here in the U.S.A. But it sure sounds like it was, because it is a great sounding rock song and sounds like a big hit. This is the first b-side off this CD. It was originally on the Romeo And Juliet soundtrack. If it wasn't a big hit, then that is because it is a off a soundtrack and wasn't promoted right. This is a favorite Everclear song of mine.
#10. Summerland - This is another hit, not a big one or small one though. In the booklet for this CD Art Alexakis says about this song: Hands down... my favorite Everclear song of all time. This is a slow rock song. Not a favorite of mine, but I like it some.
#11. Fire Maple Song - This was not a hit. But if it was, it would have been their first one. This is the only song on this compilation CD off their first CD World Of Noise. This song is alright. It is growing on me. It is another slower rock song. I wish they included another song or two from their first CD on this compilation than some others included on here.
#12. When It All Goes Wrong Again - This is their first hit off of their CD Songs From An American Movie, Vol. Two: Good Time For A Bad Attitude, which is the more rocking of the two Songs From American Movie CDs. This is another rock song. I prefer their song Rock Star over this one. Both songs are on Good Time For A Bad Attitude.
#13. Father Of Mine (Radio Mix) - Father Of Mine was another huge hit from Everclear. This is the radio mix version, so if you have So Much For The Afterglow, this version may sound a little different to you. But it still sounds good. This is Art Alexakis's favorite version of this song. This is Everclear song has touched and helped more people than any other.
#14. The Boys Are Back In Town - This song was originally a hit off of the Detroit Rock City soundtrack. It is a cover of an old Thin Lizzy song. This is a good rock song. This song is the second b-side off of this CD. I like this song better than their cover of Brown Eyed Girl.
#15. Heroin Girl - This is a rock great song. This was a big hit and another one of my favorite Everclear songs. This is the fastest song off of this CD. It has great music and the lyrics are really cool. I love listening to this song. It is cool.
#16. Brown Eyed Girl - This is another hit song. This is a slow rock song. But that should be obvious since it is a cover of the Van Morrison classic. This is a good cover, but I prefer The Boys Are Back In Town over this one. But this is still good.
#17. Sex With A Movie Star (The Good Witch Gone Bad) - This is the first previously unreleased song off of this CD. This is a good rock song. It is not that hard but not that soft either. I like the words and the music to it.
#18. The New Disease - This is the second previosly unreleased song off of this CD. This is a good rock song. I am not sure if this song or Sex With A Movie Star (The Good Witch Gone Bad) were hits or not. I am not sure which one I like better. They are both good songs. I am glad that they are on here.
#19. The New York Times - This song is about hoping there is love and compassion in this post 9/11 world. 9/11 plus something tragic that happened to a poor soul in Everclear's hometown of Portland Oregon inspired Art Alexakis to write this. He wrote this hoping the world would stop hating and fearing, and start loving and being compassionate. This is a slow moving rock song. A definiate inclusion on this CD. I like this good hit song too.
#20. Song From An American Movie Pt. 1 - If any song doesn't deserve to be on this CD, it is this one. This is just a soft nice intro to a previous CD of theirs. They should have taken this song off and replaced it with the song One Hit Wonder off the CD So Much For The Afterglow. That would have been better.
#21. Rock Star - This is of course a rock song. I like this song a lot. It has great music and some cool lyrics that got misinterpreted by a lot of fans of the band. This is another hit song. This is a great way to end the CD. This is another favorite Everclear song of mine. It is a song I am sure you will like too. It is a loud fast and just excellent song of theirs.
So there you have it. 21 great songs from a great band. I am glad I got this CD. I recommend it to anyone, even if you don't like the band or already have all of their other CDs. Pick it up.
It is too bad though that Everclear is just done to one member now, Art Alexakis. But he promises another Everclear album later this year. I hope he makes a great one with some great musicians. Everclear is a good band and I hope they live on and on.
Just go out and pick up this CD and enjoy it as much as I do.

An A-Ha Moment!.......2007-01-04
A-Ha were far more than their pretty faces on the MTV videos. (But to be the band that could lay credit to the "Take On Me" - or even the lesser known "Cry Wolf" - video.) Seven studio albums and world-wide sales of more than 60-thousand albums certainly vindicates that point. What most of us Yanks missed was the frequently inventive pop-music this trio turned out. They were masters of the confectionary ballad, with songs like "Manhattan Skyline," "Velvet" and "Stay On These Roads" masterworks of melodrama.
In their later albums, A-Ha was finding conflict within their group and the albums began to reflect the turmoil. (The CD also contains an honest recollection of the band's history.) The synths began to take a lower profile and more live (and livelier) recording began to unfold. While A-Ha was still making some cutting edge pop, a song like "Minor Earth Major Sky" is particularly dark. There is even a relatively faithful version of the Everly Brothers' "Crying In The Rain."
And then there is the matter of that voice. Morten Harket had a falsetto that rivaled Freddie Mercury's and certainly influenced singers like The Darkness' Justin Hawkins. It hit that impossibly high note in "Take On Me" but could also add to the drama of the band's shot at a James Bond theme, "The Living Daylights." Obviously hoping Bond would do for them what "A View To A Kill" did for Duran Duran, A-ha rocks it in a cinematic way, and it could possibly be both Harket's best vocal and the most under appreciated of all the James Bond movie themes.
Which about sums up this collection. There is some of the finest pop you've never heard here, new wave of otherwise. Terrifically re-mastered for this CD, A-Ha "The Singles - 1984/2004" showcases an under appreciated band who created some perfectly realized music, even without the sun shining on them in the US. (Come on Rhino - we know you can do it.)

It's unfortunate that Terri Clark gained her highest chart debut with "Girls Lie Too," a hideously cartoonish song that perpetuates stereotypes about the sexes and, by its success, about country music fans. Clark, a Canadian tomboy in a rakish and attitudinal cowboy hat, has always played on her image as an independent female yearning for a relationship as strong as her personality. That worked well on a number of early songs, especially "Better Things to Do" and on the new "One of the Guys." But clearly she's yearned to expand her subject matter, and in recording songs co-written with Kim Richey, Beth Nielsen Chapman, and Mary Chapin Carpenter (a live version of their "No Fear" appears here), she nurtured the questioning side of her inner singer-songwriter. Clark has never really fit any kind of niche, and one suspects she's now caught between trying to stay alive commercially and satisfying herself as an artist. Greatest Hits is a colorful road map to the first 10 years of her journey, even as she seems to be doubling back on certain stretches of that highway. --Alanna NashCustomer Reviews:
Kickin Canadian Country.......2007-06-13
Better Things to Do - a sassy tune telling a guy that she is over him and moved on
When Boy Meets Girl - a boy is about to discover love
Poor Poor Pitiful Me - good Terri take on the Zevon tune
Emotional Girl - good, fast. The singer tells a guy to realize she's got passion and he better be ready to handle it.
You're Easy on the Eyes - kinda gritty and a bit randy. The singer is physically attracted to a hot guy but is remembering that he is trouble otherwise.
Little Gasoline - singer is driving away from some junk in her past and is enjoying freedom.
I Wanna Do It All - uptempo number about living life full bore
Girls Lie Too - Once the listener accepts that this song is not meant to be taken seriously, then it's humorous. It's about women also making excusing and massaging guys' egos with little white lies at times. Not sexist, just joshing.
One of the Guys - singer isn't a pretty, fragile thing. She can hang out with the boys and do the "rough stuff" too.
Very good compilation album of contemporary female country. It helped me get into listening to more country in addtion to the rock and pop I glomed onto as a kid.

Good worship compilation!.......2004-04-29
This compilation, full of heart-warming praise and worship, deserves a higher rating than initially given especially after listening and enjoying both CDs during my quiet time. While playing in the background, it help set the mood in refocusing my thoughts as I went over CLASS 201 notes.
We are so undeserving of His love, yet He is so giving and forgiving.
I now listen to it over and over again.
To my surprise during yesterday's service in the Overdrive venue @ Saddleback, they played my favorites and I knew all the lyrics thx to this compilation which unknowingly prepared me. 8-)
Great compilation for your audio library!

I like the various artists and styles of worship. This may rate higher in time as it usually takes a while for the different songs/styles to soak in. Although I do have my favs. ;-)
