4 out of 5 stars Nice Phone.......2007-06-28

This phone has a nice, big, well illuminated caller ID panel, and the big buttons are nice. The speaker is clear. It has a flash button for call waiting or call transfer. The only thing I don't like is that it does not have a "hold" button - only a "mute" button, so you can't push hold, hang up the instrument, and pick it up on another instrument.

5 out of 5 stars Good phone at a good price........2007-06-27

I just bought this phone to keep in the house in case of a power outage.
However, I plugged it in and decided to leave it as bedroom phone and I'm very pleased with it. The feature that made me decide to buy this particular phone is that you can actually turn the ringer OFF. Most land-line phones allow you to lower the ring but not actually turn it off. This makes a great bedroom phone for that reason. It's there if you need it but the phone won't wake you with an unwanted call when the ringer is in the off position. Good price for a well-made phone that has caller ID as well.

3 out of 5 stars Instructions are in very small print.......2007-06-20

and that makes it difficult for someone who needs a large button telephone. I got mine yesterday and will have to find someone to install it for me.

4 out of 5 stars Good Phone.......2007-06-14

Nice large keypad, Led large and bright. I would buy another one.

1 out of 5 stars One serious flaw.......2007-06-13

I bought this phone for my elderly mother and it has many great features for her: easy to read large buttons, large caller id screen, easy volume controls. It should be the perfect phone for a person with sight limitations except that it has a very serious flaw that makes me recommend against buying it.

The hand set does not sit firmly in the base, making it very easy to hang up the phone and actually leave it off the hook. This has been a potential safety hazard for my mother and she had to stop using this phone to avoid going without phone service by not realizing that the phone was disconnected.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars 992 is a great phone.......2007-05-12

After frustrating experiences with both Polycom and Siemens phones not working correctly with caller ID, voice mail notification, etc, I was delighted to pick up a AT&T for less than half of the price of the other 2 line systems and find it worked perfectly.

I was concerned initially that voice mail detection didn't work, but after reading the manual and discovering that it is shipped as default off and turning it on everything is great.

3 out of 5 stars ok except for fast dialing..........2007-05-03

I use this with my Vonage line in my home office. I'm only using one line with the phone, but it's well behaved. Caller ID works fine, as does call waiting, etc. I agree with another of the reviewers that the mute function is a little strange. It mutes just fine, but it makes a little beep acknowledgement when you mute/unmute, which doesn't seem consistent with the idea of, um, muting. Programming speed dials was a little confusing at first, but not too bad.

My only real gripe with the phone is if you are fast with your fingers when dialing. I have to slow myself down and dial no faster than about one digit per second. So, 1-800-555-1212 would take you 10 or 11 seconds to dial. Otherwise it somehow mangles it and you get a phone co. response saying it doesn't understand the number you put in. Speeddials work ok, as does redial. And it does this on both vonage and my regular land line - so it's something with the phone. It can be pretty d*mn annoying, so you just have to learn to dial slowly.

3 out of 5 stars Good phone.......2007-03-31

I've used for a month now. All the other reviews seem to be dead-on.

Have been mostly pleased with the speaker phone. I have had a few instances where I have issues understanding people on it, they keep cutting in and out. I've about decided this is some sort of connection issue or maybe a combo effect of their speaker phone and mine. Not sure, it's not often, so when I start getting this sort of every other word effect, I just pick up the handset.

I haven't used half the features the phone has, but it's working great.

1 out of 5 stars Mine is junk.......2007-03-21

I would not take the chance and buy this phone. I bought 2 batteries for the phone as it always indicates the battery is low. Found out after further examination that the battery compartment does not fully close. I've tried all kinds of remedies including taping it shut. Nothing works. Now if I jiggle the battery compartment, the phone disconnects and "Power Failure" flashes. If I stand up or move the phone while talking to someone, the phone disconnects. Sometimes when I'm simply dialing a number it freezes and stops dialing. The red light indicating a new call has come in is always on. It does not flash when someone has left a message. It's going in the trash and I won't buy another AT&T phone.

2 out of 5 stars Sub-par Speaker Phone Capability.......2007-03-11

I purchased this phone for two important reasons: Caller-Id and it's speaker phone function. The caller-id and phone directory worked well, however the speaker phone quality was very poor. Maybe it was just bad luck with this model, but I have decided to stay away from the ATT&T brand. I would suggest you look into AASTRA/NORTEL phones. I purchased the model 9120 which had the comporable features I was looking for and up to now it has performed flawlessly.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Panasonic KX-TSC14B 2-Line Speakerphone with Caller ID (Black).......2007-03-23

I bought this phone for the quality of it's speakerphone function. It has proven to be as reliable as I had hoped. My company uses this phone and my experience with it there led me to this purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Nice product!.......2006-10-14

It is excellent! Well designed. Works perfectly and no any problem. I am happy with it.

1 out of 5 stars So so........2005-11-25

I was looking for a coreded phone that I could plug my standard headset into. I went to Staples to see which phones had this capability, and the Panasonic KX-TSC14B did, and at a reasonable price. Please note that I did not require a 2-line phone; it seems that all phones with a headset jack (at least at Staples) were 2-line phones.

I purchased the phone and was disappointed. For some reason it made my headset sound very hollow. As the previous reviewer noted, there is no mute button -- I guess I should have realized that sooner. The other annoying "feature" was if I had the headset plugged in, the calls were always routed to the headset; even when I picked up the handset! I could not figure out how to change this behavior.

I returned the phone and started my search again. I found a company that makes great Home Office phones... Aastra. I HIGHLY recommend their phones... or at least the PT-470 which I wound up purchasing. They also make 2-line phones. Do a Google search for "Aastra".

2 out of 5 stars What has happened to telephones recently?.......2004-01-19

So corded phones have now joined the ranks of junk "consumable" electronics along with hair driers and toaster ovens? In my search for a decent 2 line corded phone with caller ID, I purchased and with great disappointment returned 2 AT&T models (once the gold standard of all phones!)and finally, several months into the process, exhausted and desparate, settled on this Panasonic. Unlike the AT&Ts, all of the features work, but there is no mute, no reserve power supply (for shame!)and the LED screen is impossible to read from any angle except from directly above. I do not recommend this or any other two line phone. The situation is pathetic!

Amazon.com Product Description

The 974 from AT&T is a four-line corded telephone with powerful features and reliable operation. Caller ID/call waiting compatibility and multi-user expandability to 16 stations (compatible with AT&T models 945 and 984 along with other 974 models) provide you with plenty of options.

Four-line operation, intercom function, and conference calling help you easily manage call flow from several clients, colleagues, and customers at once. For the busy office environment, a built-in speakerphone and headset compatibility allow you to comfortably communicate hands-free.

The 200-name-and-number phone directory helps you keep track of your important contacts, and a 32-number speed dial lets you quickly dial the most frequently used numbers. Two hundred caller ID locations are also provided, and incoming call information and most setup features are easily viewable on the built-in LCD.

A new-message indicator provides a visual alert to any new voicemail messages, while the redial feature lets you easily dial any of the last six outgoing numbers. Two data ports are integrated into the 947, allowing you to hook up peripherals, such as a fax machine or modem, with ease. You can install the 947 on any desktop, or mount it on the wall to free up space. The unit also comes backed with a one-year limited warranty.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Works fine for us, with one exception.......2007-04-28

We use an AT&T 974 speakerphone in our small business. It works fine for us, and the built-in caller id display is a big help. It will even display incoming caller information when the line is in use, if you have the "caller ID on hold" feature from the phone company.

The only big drawback we've found so far is with the "hold" feature. When you put a call on hold and pick up on another extension which is not one of the compatible AT&T models, the AT&T 974 does not release the line. After the extension is hung up, the AT&T 974 keeps the line on hold for 30 minutes! AT&T says this feature only works properly with other compatible models made by AT&T. It's an inconvenience, to be sure, and for our household, where we have seven phones, a big investment which we haven't been able to justify yet.

5 out of 5 stars Great basic phone.......2007-03-26

I had several Verizon business lines setup with Centrex and this phone allows me to route up to four lines through it, with different settings for each (different rings, or even no rings), it shows caller id data, tracks calls, and has all of the basic features you would want in an office phone (speakerphone, DND, autodial, headset out, etc).

I do not use this in a large environment, so I can't speak to how well it transfers calls or deals with that sort of life - I have a single small office and suits my needs well.

The only thing that I don't like about it is not really a fault of the phone, it is a fault of my own for not looking for a phone with it in the first place - but I want a phone that can talk to my computer. Pass the caller id on to my computer, log, screen, etc - I am in the software business and would like more control over anything in my office.

This phone is basic, but has every feature a small office would need.

4 out of 5 stars Comments on hte phone.......2007-03-08

The phones are pretty good but I am having a little problem with a gate phone which I connected to one of the lines

2 out of 5 stars Speakerphone Problem on 4 of these.......2007-02-12

I have four ATT 974's. All the speakerphones cut in and out, making it impossible to have a conversation. Anyone looking to sit on conference calls will be disappointed. Other features are pretty good, but the speakerphone problem trumps the rest. I do not recommend this product, but good luck finding a decent one, I've tried many others with no satisfaction.

3 out of 5 stars Caller ID does not function well..........2006-12-21

I like the phone overall, but it has some weird problem with caller id not functioning properly. It is extremely unreliable.

2 out of 5 stars Not practical.......2007-04-15

I am usually a big fan of Panasonic products but this telephone is disappointing. I have had it for a number of years now and here are my main complaints:

- The display is hard to read because it is not backlit and the contrast cannot be fine-tuned very well. It is either too much or too little. The display part also does not tilt, so depending on the light in the room the user will have to make an effort to see the display at a suitable angle.

- There are only three buttons to store frequently dialed numbers. Way too few!

- Scrolling through the display to find a number is tedious and not user-friendly.

-There is also no way to delete all received calls from the list at once (at least I haven't found it). I have sat at this phone forever to delete these one after another after another...

I do not like this phone and wish I had paid better attention when buying. I can only recommend to anyone looking for a new phone to make a list of all the features they want and then check thoroughly whether the model in question has all of them. I didn't and ended up with this phone which annoys me daily...

4 out of 5 stars Great Phone .......2007-01-19

The only problem I have with this phone which is why I only gave it 4 stars is that when it's mounted on the wall the handset is not properly secured and tends to fall frequently. I've had to replace the handset because of this.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Phone.......2006-06-12

I bought this phone to replace a 10+ year old Panasonic model KX-T3175. This phone is equal in all features carried forward, and has attractive new features like built-in caller ID, intercom, and headset capabilities that make it superior. My LCD display is plenty bright, and contains more information than my previous set.

1 out of 5 stars Dissapointed.......2005-10-21

The LCD display sucks. The display does not seem to have any kind of backlight. All the extension flash until you assign them a number even if you have no extensions. According to Panasonic the phone should have a backlight. This is the second phone I am going to return.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent phone.......2004-10-01

We bought one of these to replace the older model KT3280 which we bought about 10 years ago. We love the built-in caller ID. Haven't tried any other phones as we are pleased with the Panasonic.

Amazon.com Product Description

The 984 from AT&T is a four-line corded phone with multi-user expandability to 16 stations and with a built-in answering machine. Caller ID/call waiting compatible, the 984 has a 200-number caller ID memory, along with a 200-number phone directory to help keep track of important contacts. A base speakerphone and headset compatibility let you communicate hands-free, and two data ports allow you to take advantage of peripherals such as a modem or fax machine.

A 32-number speed dial lets you easily call the most frequently dialed numbers, while features such as call transfer, intercom, and three-party conferencing allow you to manage your incoming calls. The 984 works with any AT&T model 974, 945, 944, 955, and 964 phones, so you can mix and match to suit your office's needs. You can adjust speakerphone, headset, and ringer volume levels, and also choose between several ringer types. The 984 has a six-number redial, while mute, hold, and flash buttons provide additional functionality.

The built-in digital answering machine provides 20 minutes of record time, with a maximum message length of either one minute or unlimited minutes (selectable). Memo/conversation recording allows you to record important information, such as driving directions and phone numbers, without having to write anything down. Remote message check lets you stay on top of your messages even while you are away from home. With the base LCD screen, you can access your phone's settings, and a memory loss protection feature saves your settings in case of a power failure. The 984 comes backed with a one-year limited warranty.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for small business!.......2007-03-23

This is the most flexible "mini-PBX" style multi-line phone I was able to find. And BELIEVE me - I did my research! You ARE able to add music on hold with a separate device that is for sale on the web.

Holding - transfering - paging (individual or office) it works AWESOME!. The reason I REALLY like it is because I can attach 19 total incoming/outgoing lines to the system maximum while giving each extension their OWN private line. They each have customizable voicemail and I can have an autoattendant pick up every line even though other lines might already have been answered by the autoattendant.

I use VoIP - and so some VoIP carriers add extra functionality with transfering lines out, etc. One warning - the VoIP routers (so I've been told) may not be giving enough electricity as a regular standard phone line for the multiline features to work properly. I ran into problems BUT I think now that it's because my wires are to closely "overlayed" and if the wires are not "twisted" then this tends to cause more intereference.

So aside from user setup problems - the phones are GREAT! Recommended everytime.

4 out of 5 stars Good phone, bad manual.......2007-03-15

Getting this phone up and running is pretty straightforward, despite the fact that the manual is short on detail. This is particularly the case where it addresses the Auto Attendant feature, so if you're buying the phone for the Auto Attendant, you might have to fight with it a bit to get it going. Otherwise, it's a great phone, sounds good, no problem transferring/paging/conference/etc.

4 out of 5 stars AT&T 984 - 4 line phones.......2007-01-11

We are using 5 of the 984's in an office with 5 administrative employees that need voice mail answering systems. We also have 3 954 phones in areas that do not need the answering system. Plus there are 4 wireless phones for our hourly employees that are not system phones. The system does what we wanted it to do. I had planned to return it if it did not live up to our needs. We had a older AT & T 4 line system 800 series and this one has a totally different logic system and many improved features. The bugs are still not worked out. AT&T offers support and even electronic enhansments for free to solve electonic problems associated with your local service. We are collecting question and situation data before wasting their time.It took about 4 hours to read and understand the directions plus program the phones. One person should do this then teach the others what they need to know. We did this with a short summary sheet which also gave intercom numbers, how to transfer, etc. Programming the phones could probably be done easily by a 10 year old. For us it took some re reading. I can see why some people would give up and think the phones are no good.
We paid about $1100 for the system. We could have paid well over to $4000 for other systems that I am sure were excellent with many more features but were just more then we needed. Plus the selling company would have had to maintain them and make any up grades for us at an additional expense.
We wish when you transfered a call the caller would hear a ringing, they hear nothing until the phone is answered or sent to voice mail. AT&T may have an answer for this or we will warn callers in the out going message. It would be nice if you could play music during the wait or a sales message.
Over all we are very happy with the price and performace.

3 out of 5 stars Good phone - hard to set up.......2006-05-13

Just recently purchased. It took me a very long time to set up this phone - the manual was very confusing. Once set up however, it is easy to use and I have virtually no problems using it.

1 out of 5 stars I wished I had my old system back.............2006-05-10

My phone freezes, as if your computer screen would freeze. You can't do anything until you unplug the power cord, and remove the 9V battery. Once you replace the battery, and plug the power back in, you are fine, for around 48 hours. Why can't I find I a phone?

2 out of 5 stars Only advantage is price........2007-05-21

Well, it's a phone. You can pick up the phone and make a phone call.

You can have two lines into the phone and press a button to switch between lines.

But, if that's all you want, just buy two $8 phones.

Problems I have with this phone:

- I bought it primarily for the speaker phone functionality. The speaker phone sucks. It is very difficult for anyone on the other end of the call to hear me.
- The caller ID will NOT work with rechargeable AA batteries.
- The speaker phone button is annoying. In order to answer a call with it, you have to press and hold the button for two seconds, then release it. If you just press it, and then see the light flash and release, the caller just gets disconnected. I have no idea why you would make a phone where the light goes on when the phone isn't actually going to connect you.
- The caller ID display is very difficult to read unless you have the right lighting and are looking at the right angle.
- This phone is made of cheap plastic.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Phone EVER.......2007-04-27

I have never placed a product review before - but this is one of those products where I would NEVER buy again. The sound quality is horrendous. We have done everything thinking maybe it was our phone line so we replaced inside wires, outlets, etc. Another phone works perfectly but this one you can barely hear over the terrible static. Avoid.

3 out of 5 stars Good overall phone - with a few issues.......2007-03-23

The "CONFERENCE" feature is useless - while you can hear each of the other two parties, they cannot hear each other at all. My other big complaint is that if I'm sending or receiving a fax on line 2, I can hear the fax tone on line 1. Makes it pretty touch to carry on a conversation. I suspect this is the same issue inside the electronics - not enough shielding between the lines.

5 out of 5 stars Good basic 2 line phone.......2007-03-13

The phone has good sound, and the speaker phone feature also works well. My only (minor) complaint is that you have to push a button for the line you want to answer (it doesn't automatically select the incoming line). Caller ID also works great and is easy to read. Easy to set up. I like that it doesn't need to be plugged into electricity in the wall (it uses 4 AA batteries to power the caller ID screen, apparently this will last for months). I already have too many things plugged in around my office!

5 out of 5 stars good regarding price.......2007-01-09

I'm looking for an inexpensive two line corded phone with caller id. I just unpacked, put in it four AA cells and go!
It works fine, have clear audio and also operates in full hands free mode.
The large display allows an easy reading.

4 out of 5 stars Corded Phones.......2007-04-17

GE 29385GE1 Corded Phone with Speakerphone and Call Waiting Caller ID

Phone works very well. We live in a very open and windy area and no-corded phones sparkle and crackle a lot. Volume controls could go a little higher but still a good caller-id speaker phone. I've spent more on other phones that didn't work near as well with my hearing aids.

1 out of 5 stars No Backlit display on this model.......2007-03-20

Despite what the description says, the display on this model is not backlit. At least not the one I received. Even the GE product spec sheet from their own web site says backlit, but it is not. No one else commented on this, so not sure if I have a defective item or not, but I specifically bought it for the backlit display, so it's going back. I see that another GE model, 29369GE1, is backlit according to some reviewers, so I'm going to give that one a try. Rated a one for bum product info.

4 out of 5 stars Good functionally but less good ergonomically.......2007-02-10

The phone functions very well, but the handset is too rounded and tapered, and worst of all is made of plastic which is far too smooth, so gripping the handset is somewhat bothersome. Also, adding a shoulder rest is absolutely necessary in order to rest it on your shoulder instead of holding it in your hand.

5 out of 5 stars Rapid service and quality product........2007-01-10

I was very pleased with the GE29385GE1 telephone purchased through Amazon. Its description was more than adequate to determine if it suited my specific needs, and the speeed with which it arrived resolved problems we had with immediacy.

4 out of 5 stars Fine "call-waiting caller id" wallphone.......2006-04-18

Stepping up my landline service to include the "call-waiting caller id" capability meant replacing my Northwestern Bell wallphone, which had served well for 3 years. This GE model was inexpensive ($25 at a local store), ergonomically designed, and full-featured. I'm very pleased with it.

Reading the instructions, nothing to do with the phone is difficult to manage, from installing the 4 AA batteries (just my luck the old phone used AAA for which I had a gazillion rechargeables!) to using the caller id functions and storing numbers in memory.

The phone is easily configured as a wallphone or a desk phone, with a reversable wedge-shaped pedestal making reading of the display simple. I've had no trouble with the phone, and the handset volume and sound quality has been excellent. To date, I have not tried the speaker phone, but neither have I had any trouble with it "automagically" turning on, as mentioned in a previous review.

Pros: inexpensive; full-featured; good, small design
Cons: rather a funny high-pitched ring

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good for the price.......2006-06-20

I've been using this phone for about a month now, and overall it's pretty good.

Pros: Sound quality is good on handset/speakerphone/headset, the controls feel nice, and the unit has a nice clean look. It deals well with the two lines: indicator lights, separate voice mail access codes, hold and conferencing are very easy. Setting up and using the speed dials is very easy (but you only get a few of them, which is fine with me). You can use the speed dials when you're on the phone, which can be useful for access codes and the like. Caller ID does nothing special, but it works as you'd expect, including with Call Waiting calls.

Cons: As others have mentioned, there is no mute button; the voice mail indicator is an LCD instead of a blinking light (really dumb idea). The LCD display is not backlit and not easily viewed at an angle, and the unit sits flat on a desk, so you have to view it at an angle (I put a piece of wood under it to tilt it up, which helps, but is not a great tribute to Panasonic engineering). Also, plugging in a headset disconnects the handset; with a headset plugged in you can't pick up the handset and talk.

Contrary to what another reviewer said, I did find that I could use the first line when there is no power, as the manual claims you can.

Overall, I'm happy enough with the unit. I did plug in a freestanding voice mail indicator light because the "envelope" indicator is pretty much useless, but the other problems are not significant in the way I use it.

    1 out of 5 stars Junk.......2005-08-14

Here is why it is junk. 1. creates a buzz on the line 2. Not enough room in back of phone for the cord if you wall mount 3. The LCD is pathetic. Can't see it in a normally lit room. THis should be back lit, and numbers should be bigger. 4. All in all, a real dissappointment and it is going back.

3 out of 5 stars Good for the price.......2005-07-16

As others have said, this is good for the price, but lacks the features you'd want out of a $200 phone. Two other notable drawbacks - the headphone jack didn't work with two different types of headsets I tried - the volume level was all wrong, even after adjusting it on the headsets. Also, sometimes the CallerID text just says "Incoming Caller" (It almost always gets the number correct). The fax machine I have next to it properly displays the text. I would have gladly paid $10 more for a phone like this with a mute button, a message waiting light, and a usable headphone jack and I think Panasonic cut a few too many corners here to get the price down. Personally I have no use for storing an address book on the phone - that's what my computer's for. Despite these drawbacks, it works and I'm not spending $200 on a phone.

3 out of 5 stars Had to add a mute button........2005-03-27

I had to modify the phone with an on-off pushbutton to mute the mic. I couldn't find another corded phone in this price range with two lines and speakerphone but the lack of mute really sucks on this one.

2 out of 5 stars Nice Phone, But Lacks Some Essentials.......2004-05-12

I have to agree with everyone. Two lines are very nice, but the lack of a mute button makes this phone unusable for conference calls. Unfortunately, I am going to have to replace it with another phone that has two lines and a mute button. Fatal design flaw. Lack of a lighted "message waiting indicator light" is also a big drawback, but there is a faint message waiting indicator on the LCD.
