HP Photosmart 2710.......2007-05-30
I loved this photo printer so when my boss wanted one for her desk this was the first printer that I wanted to purchase.
hp 2710 multifunction.......2007-03-27
I rev'd this for a christmas present and used it very little, all of a sudden the carriage quit. I called HP and talked to a man that I couldn't even understand, but basically he told me it wasn't worth fixing buy a new one. So I did I bought a Canon. That will be my last HP.

NEVER A SOFTWARE UPDATE.......2006-11-29
Stay away from this careless company's products. The machine may function well, but HP does not provide any software updates for its products. As a consequence, my 2710 no longer operates in the Windows XP environment, although it worked in this environment when I paid money for it. Technical support told me "We are very aware of this problem and are working on it." That's nice, but I cannot use the scan functions at all from the PC, nor will you be able to.
Good all-in-one when it works; installing (software) difficult.......2006-10-14
Full Review
I bought this all-in-one because I needed the scanner and copier functionality and didn't want separate devices for this. I also needed Mac compatibility and good overall quality. The wireless networking is a bonus for me, I have not yet used it but plan to do so in the future.
I bought it together with the duplex unit so that I can print double sided (note that the printer will wait 10s before continuing printing the backside; this is to let the ink dry). This unit sticks out of the back so it makes the footprint of the printer larger. Also realize that the exit tray sticks out in the front so that the entire device becomes quite bulky (50x50cm footprint). Note that there is no document feeder, so if heavy multiple page faxing/scanning is important to you, the HP is perhaps not the best choice.
I have used now all functions, except the memory card reader and wireless capabilities, and I can say that everything works as advertised: prints are fast and of good quality (sharp to the naked eye; only with magnifying glass you can see rough edges). Scans are also fast, and the copying function is really nice to have. For me these functions were the most important so I am satisfied. Occasionally, I make a photo print (also good), but here my requirements are not so high. It is possible to use special 6-ink color and gray ink cartridges for photos ($$$) so I expect that very good image quality is possible here, but I haven't tried this out yet.
However, the software is not user friendly: perhaps I did something wrong, but the basic installation took me almost 4 hours ! With occasional hang-ups of the system, letting me sitting not knowing what to do. I simply fail to understand why I need to install 350MB just to make a printer work! And this is only the 'basic' installation ('full' installation doubles this). Everything works fine now, but it left me with an uncomfortable feeling.
Bottom line: machine works fine and provides many functions in one device. I can recommend it. The only case in which I would look further is if heavy printing/scanning and photoprinting is very important to you. In that case, I think the HP is expensive (ink) and lacks a document feeder.
Update 9-sep-2005:
I have tried to install the 2710 on a Mac using Airport (wireless connection). I did not succeed. even not with 6 hour continuous support from HP help desk. End conclusion was that, after installing new drivers (even Mac OS was reinstalled!) there were still some settings within Mac OS not completely right so that at startup, the connection was not emmediately reestablished. After so many hours I finally gave up: now I use the 2710 just with a usb cable and that works fine. But this should not happen when you pay a premium for wireless 'capabilities' !
Update 21-sep-2006:
I have had several problems with ink cartridges. I always use original HP cartridges but now I have had a few times serious alignment problems: lines get printed only half: lower half is invisble. Self-cleaning, cartridge-realignment did not help. Only after cleaning them manually with some cloth, reinserting them, printing at least 10 'test pages' the printer works again as it should. But it left me with an uncomfortable feeling: I still do not know the cause, and I expect it will happen again in the future.
There I downgrade my review to 2-3 stars: in general the printer works ok, but too many glitches and software issues for me to recommend it to anyone. My next printer will no longer be an inkjet from HP.
Update 12-oct-2006:
New problems, this time the printer says "out of paper, press OK to continue". Well, I have filled the paper tray and the printer refuses "to continue" no matter what I do. Again I lost half an hour troubleshooting this thing. Eventually it worked again, but I have no idea what I did wrong or should do next time. I downgrade my review to 1 star: just too many annoying problems. I will not buy a similar HP printer again.
Pros
Printing, scanning, and copying quality, user friendly control panel.
Cons
Installing software, annoying problems, no document feeder, ink alignment.
The Bottom Line
This all-in-one performs ok when it works. No sheet feeder. Software installation is very difficult.

Major software issues.......2006-08-14
After installing and uninstalling the software and patches ad nauseum, I cannot get rid of the DEP error on my screen. Tech support is terrible and told me my operating system is corrupt and to reload it. On Google, if you search on Photosmart and DEP, there are 36,000 hits discussing this issue. I will never buy another HP product in my lifetime.

The All-In -One From Hell--I'd Give It Zero Stars If I Could.......2007-04-17
I bought an HP PSC 2510 Photosmart all-in-one because of the extreme reliability of the HP copiers my office used and abused for decades and because of the flawless performance of the ancient HP IIIP personal laser printer I still use. That was my big mistake.
Let me share my misery; some of it like others, some not. First, the HP PSC 2510 Photosmart All-in One took forever to set up and required several hours on the phone with tech support in India with techs whose English was as impossible to understand as many others have complained about.
The machine worked well for a month or two during which it was only infrequently used. Then, when I turned it on one day all the control lights started to blink and I got an error message saying I should check the ink cartridges. I did all the things that the manual said to do--barely used cartridges checked, shaken, cleaned and reinserted, print head cleaned and realigned several times but, I still got the blinking lights and error message. Inexplicably, this error situation disabled all of the functions of the machine--including those which did not require any use of the printing capabilities i.e. no scanning and no faxing. An hour or two with barely understandable Indian tech support--who seemed quite familiar with this error message and its results--produced a fix that lasted one day. That same fix brought no results the next time.
I gave up and did without all those nifty All-In-One features, so, the machine sat there gathering dust and dirty looks for many months. Finally one day, after I had tried and failed yet again to get the machine up and running and then emailed customer service complaining about this essentially brand new and totally useless POS, I was contacted by an Indian tech from HP and told that, since my original warranty had now run, I could get--for you a special deal!--not a refund, not a new machine but a discount on a higher priced machine if I bought it that day. Needless to say this experience has soured me completely on HP and its products.
Wireless is just awesome, just awesome........2007-03-22
This printer breaks all barriers as far as convience goes. Just one wire, the plug !! No cables ~~ no need to keep the printer in the same room as your computer. YOU can put it where YOU WANT.. A+ for laptops..
Initial hookup is not for the faint of heart, but if you just forge ahead with the setup, you can nail it... Once you install the drivers via CD or download them from HP's web sight, you're on your way..
The overall quality is pretty dang good.................
Continued Misery from HP PSC 2510 All-in-One.......2007-03-06
I purchased the HP PSC 2510 about 18 months ago - much the same as other reviewers, I bought it because it was billed as network ready (wireless and wired) and that was attractive for home use on our LAN. We had hardwired our entire home and wanted a printer that we could use from the downstairs office and the kids rooms.
I won't go into the misery we experienced just with the install on XP Pro but suffice it to say, our experience was much the same as that described by other folks here. We have experienced countless error messages, required more uninstalls/reinstalls of HP Director than I care to remember, and although I've kept installing the latest, greatest drivers - it has continued to give us fits. Never seeming to consistently get an IP address or be able to be found on the network.
So we recently upgraded to Vista and immediately all machines found the HP 2300 (B&W printer) but no matter what I/we did the 2510 never showed up. I had been able to assign a static IP address to the 2300 and for that printer life was good. However, I needed to do some color printing and decided to tackle the 2510 again. When I printed the network configuration page it listed the IP, DNS, etc as all 0.0.0.0 and nothing I did from reset the router, the printer, the everything would make it go beyond the `initializing' state on the printer.
So today I spent about three ½ hours on the phone with tech support - yep, India. No offense, but the first line customer support (read the chick who wanted my credit card number) was so difficult to comprehend that I must have said "Hunh?" and "I'm sorry?" and "I didn't understand what you said" and "What?" about thirty times; to the point that I was getting embarrassed and ever so aggravated. She finally said she was transferring me to technical support. Little did I know that it was about to get even better.
The tech guy started with the same inane questions - name, rank, serial, etc. I had already been through that with the customer service person and, although I am blond, female, and from the South, I guessed that he already knew all of this stuff - I mean surely he had my info on a monitor or something. So I asked, "can you just read the screen"? It went down-hill from there.
I asked him one question. Is there a way to assign a static IP address to the 2510? He gave be about seven answers - of course; none answered the question I asked. Each time he gave me some answer which did not in any way address the question I had asked I merely repeated my initial question - using pretty much the exact same words each time. I was so annoyed at this point I was determined that I was going to make him answer me with a straight answer. He put me on hold and finally came back and said something that sounded like "no".
I described the problem I was having about three times. He had me do all kinds of things that I had already tried but I did them over again. Ultimately, he had me do a hard restart; performed by disconnecting from power and then re-plug power while simultaneously depressing the number 6 and the # keys. Once restarted it continued to fail to obtain and IP address.
At this point, he tells me that this is indicative of a firmware problem that HP is aware of and it will require a replacement. I, rather stupidly, asked "replacement of what?" He said the whole machine. I was incredulous. I mean it prints, faxes, and scans. Why the heck would I want to replace the entire thing?
He goes on to tell me that they are offering what sounds like some sort of `special' and that HP will give me a trade-in on a new system. Of course the system he wanted to send me is discontinued but they apparently have a few that they couldn't sell just lying around. Gee what a great deal! And the best part, HP is willing to give me a $30 credit towards the purchase of this lousy, discontinued (read no longer supported) POS that they no longer make.
Although I was more annoyed than I can describe I thanked the nice man and hung up. I dragged the 2510 out of the closet and onto my desk and hooked it up with a USB cable. Worked like a charm. I went out tonight and found a 16 foot USB 2.0 cable that allows me to put this noisy printer back behind closed doors and I just installed in on my Vista machine and shared it. I suppose I could have graciously sent them this 2510 and spent another $300 on the discontinued model and made someone in India very happy.
I'd sooner chew on rocks than buy another HP printer and support another foreign tech support guy who can read the scripts HP sends him/her but hasn't a clue about what is really going on.
So, save your money. Or if you want to make a donation to feed a hungry mouth in India - try Unicef.
Great Hardware Lousy Software.......2007-02-14
The PSC2510 hardware works great. The full software load option is ridiculous because it takes up lots of storage space on the hard drive and slows down my machine (HP Director).
Not in this order, I have setup the printer in USB mode (The best and fastest working mode). I setup it up in Wireless and Wired networking modes which end up wasting hours/days of productive time I could have had. I experienced everything from setup issues to the printer losing its network connection.
If you want to use this printer via a USB connection it is reliable. If you want to use it via networking, be aware and try some other model or brand!
Preaching to the Choir.......2007-01-22
Given all the detailed complaints already here, the biggest benefit for posting this may be in helping me feel a little better--because my experience is identical--good hardware, utterly useless software. The machine now sits idle for two reasons--one, it causes so many errors so often, each time requireing a uninstall and re-install of a gargantuan file, and two, because I simply do not have the time for more pointless circular conversations with 'support.' I inherited this lemon because HP finally gave up on trying to fix the earlier model I had. The only thing that brought them to do anything at all was a case registered with the Better Business Bureau. Beware of this boat anchor disguised as a printer--and with a full install approaching 1GB (yes, a gigabyte), it sinks to the bottom pretty fast indeed.
