Can't Beat This Unit For The Money.......2007-06-27

Took me 5 minutes to unpack and set it up in our car ( we've also used it in our truck). Pulled out of the garage and let it lock in "home" and then put in the address we were going to in another town several hours away. It guided us right to the front door with no wrong turns, no problems, easy to hear and see. Same results on the second trip in the truck to our sons new home in a community we had never been to before. This is a great little unit.

A friend of mine had one of these and showed it to me and I was hooked. I bought mine a day later. I love it! It works very well and it is simple to use. We are going on a long road trip later this summer and are looking forward to using it for that. I am a social worker who visits people at home all the time and it's very useful for that as well. I would recommend this to anyone who travels a lot.

i trusted Garmin but this is really a very terrible experience with c330. My friend asked me to buy two for him and one died hard after only one usage: we tried reset button, we tried different ways of powering it up. But it completely died. have to return it for full refund. So for people planning to invest in c330, be careful and test yours once receiving it to make sure it works reliably and you can meet the 30-day return deadline if it does not work.

I was surprisingly delighted at my purchase of the Garmin StreetPilot c330 which I really believe has already paid for itself through real time saved & stress free journeys. Having not grown up in Boston, it obviously takes quite some time to familiarise myself with everything - now whilst I remember, at least if I don't - I'll still get there on time!! All-in-all, a great buy.

Almost perfect.......2007-07-01

In short, this is a great product and highly recommended. Free upgrades are easily installed. I've used it for over a year now and have found it almost unreal in its ability to deliver the goods. Since it is portable, I use it in rental cars when out of town. Really great for getting out of and back to often confusing big airport rental car lots. Only two minor complaints:

--the screen is a bit washed out in bright sun. Not sure how to fix that but hopefully there is a solution to be found in future models.In cloudy weather or at night it is fine.

--more important, the voice turn indicator comes much too late. Sometimes it is fine, e.g., "Turn left on Main Street in 400 feet." More often, however, it will give you this instruction only when you are just crossing the street you should actually have turned on. When the screen is washed out from the sunlight, you need this voice instruction in advance! This is particularly annoying when you are on a three or four lane road and you know from the lower right corner screen instructions that you will be turning in, say, 400 feet, but you don't know whether to the right or the left.

This seems to be the answer for my job. Now, what is the difference between v7 and v8 software ? and how come Amazon does not sell the one with V8 ?? I am looking elsewhere since its much cheaper for V8.

I know there are over 600 previous reviews but I have to tell you this thing is great. I recently drove from Seattle to Orlando and it found the shortest, quickest route. Spend the extra few dollars and get the voice model, it is really worth it. You don't have to depend on watching the screen. It always gave me at least 8/10's of a mile notice before any turns and I would never have found my way through Kansas City without it. If you want a GPS, this is it.

Garmin C340-For the price and ease of use...I don't think there is a better unit. I have 2 of these units...one for me and one for my wife. My wife won't go anywhere without it and I love the arrival time feature. Only on a very slim occasion (ie. new road/development/tall buildings) does "Jill" have any trouble. I have used it in Baltimore, D.C., (while traveling) Seattle/Tacoma WA, Cleveland/Pittsburgh and nearly everywhere in between. The best part...the price keeps going down.

It's a wonderful system. Small and portable, but large enough to easily read the map. I highly reccomend it for anyone looking for a navigation system. My girlfriend just moved up form Texas and swears by it.

Great GPS!.......2007-06-29

I've had this product for almost a month now and it is flawless. I've not experienced the lock up or crash problem some have had when using the SD card slot while playing mp3's. Maybe they upgraded the flash and/or software since then. However, I also don't intend to use it long term to listen to my music in the car. The sound is still tinny and thin because of the small speakers.

Right out of the box it is ready, willing, and able to go. I needed it a day after I got it. I plugged in the address, portions of the address really, it filled in the rest, gave me a choice for multiple addresses, and, BAM, got me going in under a min. As a consultant, I'm always going to new locations around the Puget Sound and even Portland areas. This device makes it SO easy to get where I need to go without the worry of printing out online maps.

However, that does not mean it doesn't have some flakiness to it. The Bluetooth seems to have some weirdness about connecting and being connected to. It has disabled itself several times. On one occasion, it disconnected itself right after I hung up a call. Another thing that Amazon STILL has not updated is their web site in recommending the car adaptor when you buy the c550. First off, you don't need one for car because it comes with one. Second, is the fact it is the WRONG adaptor. As stated in another reviewers review. What makes it even worse; I had to pay to send the adaptor back.

However, overall, this is a great product and I couldn't really be any happier. No longer do I need to GoogleEarth or Mapquest a location, print it out, and then read it while I'm driving the road.

I have a Nuvi 660 and just bought this unit for my wife, and she loves it. The screen is a bit small compared to the Nuvi :), but all in all, has all the necessary features. Great GPS.

My husband bought Garmin as a Christmas present for me after we moved to the East Coast. The product worked 6 times total. When I contacted Garmin for technical support, the technician admitted that specific product we had was defective. They acknowledged that the part number was part of a "bad run" and then gave me the run around about warranty services. They really do not want to replace it or give us our money back. After this deplorable customer service, I would recommend that Amazon customers consider alternative GPS systems. TomTom or Magellan specifically. I am not sure how this battle with Garmin will end... either we will have to sue them or raise a stink to get them to abide by their warranty obligation. My advice is GO ELSEWHERE for GPS systems.

So Far, So good..........2007-06-22

I picked up the c550 from another online retailer. It came in an OEM (plain white) box, but contained all pieces the standard-boxed unit comes with. Quick notes:

- Acquires satellites much faster than my old Magellan RoadMate 700. Ready to go in less than a minute!
- If used in 'map' mode, it shows the next road coming up. Would like to know if that road is on the left or right side, but that's just being picky I suppose.
- 3D view is nice. Took some getting used to but I keep it in that mode now.
- Battery life is outstanding.
- The traffic feature is NOT INTEGRATED. It's part of the charger assembly. Had I known that, I may not have purchased this unit. When I read 'integrated' I expect it to be self-contained within the nav system.
- Because the traffic feature isn't integrated, if you choose to go on battery power alone you lose the traffic feature. So part of the portability goes out the window, as far as I'm concerned.
- Traffic monitoring is okay, but you have to have a route programmed in to get the feature, i.e., it won't give you traffic info on the road you're traveling on if you're in map mode.
- I haven't tried the Bluetooth speakerphone yet, but will test it soon.
- The POI feature is much nicer than some other systems I've tried. For example, if you query for restaurants, it will keep refreshing and updating your list, including distance and direction, while you move.
- Estimated time of arrival nice to have.

Overall, I'd buy this unit again. I picked over the c530 mainly for the Bluetooth functionality, but the traffic feature is nice as well. Too bad Garmin doesn't understand what 'integrated' means. I knocked off a star because of that.

Good but not perfect.......2007-06-21

I bought this to help reaquaint myself with the Denver area after being gone for 20 some years as I was now moving back to town. While it has been helpful say 80% of the time. The directions are off two frequently. Like the final mile to my house. I've been here two months now and don't use it all that often but I find it especially useful when I'm away from home and want to find the best way from that spot to one on my favorite list. I'm hoping the next upgrade to the software will start ironing out some ot the kinks in direction giving.

That said I'd still buy it again.

I love this product! Good price and the touch screen makes it so easy to use. Screen size seemed like it might be small but I was pleasantly surprised that it was very easy to see and read while driving.

Outstanding, but there are better Garmin Units Now.......2007-06-17

This is a terrific unit that calculates\recalculates very fast! Miss a turn? No problem. The 320 will recalculate your trip in 1-3 seconds and inform you of the new instructions and the POI (Points of Interest) are among the best out there at any price.

I use it even in areas where I know where I do not need directions. The reason is because I found that POIs come in very handy when I want a new place to eat or need to call ahead. I use it mostly for for locating resteraunts or calling in To-Go orders if I'm in a hurry.

Loading maps is as easy as sending email but the supplied SD card is a bit small if you travel across many states. I bought a very inexpensive 2g SD card and loaded the entire US with room to spare. Now that I have the US loaded I expect to never touch the card again and have since deleted the maps from my computer.

The only two complaints I have with this unit are the screen and suction mount.

The screen must be tilted down away from the sun to see it. Thanks to the voice turn by turn instructions I find it is not necessary to see it, but I do wish it were brighter.

The suction mount failed after only a few months. I opted for a friction mount from Amazon and couldn't be happier. It is easy to move from car to car and stays where I put it.

As good as it is I'm giving it 4 stars because of the mount and less than bright screen. If you can find it at a good price and decide to get it you will receive a nice and very capable unit that will serve you well. However, Garmin has the 330 and 340 now which are basically the same unit but have pre-loaded maps and the 340 reads the streets for you. If money is a concern get the 320. Otherwise, go with the 330 or 340 but be ready to accept the screen and suction mount issues. You won't get a brighter screen unless you pony up quite a bit more cash, or decide to go with another brand and risk trading off some features and getting a smaller POI database.

This is a very nice GPS. Easy to use and accurate in 95% of time.

There are only two cons: It won't work when air temperature is below 50. Searching could be very slow sometimes. Otherwise, it would be excellent. Highly recommended for general user.

i have purchased three of these units now, one for my sister, one for my brother, and one for myself. it will definitely get you where you need to go - one warning though! in florida the suction cup mount will become permanently attached in only a few days! i purchased a friction type dash mount for transfer to other vehicles.

Good nav, but MapSource is far from perfect.......2007-06-01

Good product, good tool to have when traveling. I have found a couple of bugs where the Garmin will try and take me home avoiding highways, even though all avoidances are turned *off*. MapSource is off on occasions, missing my target site by quite a margin of error.

I had a cobra navone 3000, compared to this one, it was so big, bulky and no touch screen. I bought this one for my dad who speaks only chinese and loves driving. He loves it! It has English too!! Nice! My wife had a problem with the unit taking a really long time to find the satellites initially, but that problem only occurred twice. The unit is great for finding restaurants and stores due to it's internal library. I'm a little fuzzy about how to keep the listings updated, and I get the feeling you have to subscribe to a pay service(?) My cousin wanted a unit that would recalculate if you don't follow the directions suggested by the unit, and this model does this well. You have to get used to the unit telling you to "in 200 feet, turn right", but you are already in that intersection. I guess the unit assumes that you are driving the speed limit on surface streets! hee hee The unit has an English setting, so luckily for me, this isn't only for Asian languages.

ASIAN LANGUAGE - NOT ENGLISH.......2006-12-01

Great unit, just like the regular C330, but this is the ASIAN LANGUAGE version. Hate for somebody to accidently end up with this when they really wanted the standard English language unit.

Easy to use right out of the box, no need to read anything. A great display for all driving conditions day or night. Super detail on the maps and easy to use software. The POI's are detailed and they seem to cover almost every major location you could ever possible want to drive to. I love it!

First time GPS Owner - Very impressed.......2006-07-31

I purchased this as my first GPS for a family vacation. Researched quite a few and decided upon the c550 because of brand name and simplicity. Overall a great little device, very intuitive, easy to use. Got us to where we wanted to go "most (99%)" of the time. Two preprogrammed locations, a Toy Train museum in PA and a restaurant in GA were way off. The first landed us at a very nice Amish farmers house - not many toy electric trains there and the second, for the restaurant, in an office park. Both locations several miles off. I'll report the details on the Garmin page to see if future updates make corrections. Only one additional trip point can be added to a trip but you can change them out as you go. Apparently with MapSource products by Garmin, purchased separately, you can add more - I'm not clear on this - still learning the difference between waypoints, trip points, points of interest, etc. At any rate I hope this is changed in future updates. The Bluetooth sync'd to my phone and works very well as a speaker phone. It has MP3 capability but in my opinion you get better sound quality from an old AM transistor radio and this is just a feature I will not use. The provided mounting is a bit cumbersome. I would prefer it come with a friction mount, an available option, but the suction devices do work. I'll be adding an optional friction mount... The voice directions are very computer like sometimes the pronunciation is off but is usually understandable. The GTM 20 Traffic Message Channel is extremely convenient and does a great job of helping to avoid traffic jams. Overall I really like my new gadget!

Update: C550 GTM 20 Blowing its Fuse

The following is a problem I am having with the GTM 20 integrated FM TMC (Traffic Message Channel) traffic receiver, antenna and cigarette lighter adapter supplied with the c550. I have reported this via email and telephone to Garmin. The Garmin Tech - who was very helpful - said this is a first and is exchanging the GTM 20 for one from the factory.

Here is the reported issue:

"The GTM 20 supplied with my new c550 blows its fuse every time I plug it into either of my vehicles, car and van, lighter outlets. The fuse blows with or when power is applied to the lighter outlet regardless of whether or not the c550 is attached. I returned my orgianl brand new c550 to Circuit City because after 2 weeks of flawless performance it started exhibiting this behavior. Now, out of the box this c550's GTM 20 is doing the same. All other 12v adapters for phone, etc work properly in both vehicles. As noted above the c550 I just returned worked perfectly for about 2 weeks, in both automobiles and now this new, out of the box c550s GTM 20 is doing the same thing."

FURTHER UPDATE:

I received the replacement GTM 20 for my c550 directly from Garmin and it is working perfectly in both vehicles, it has not blown its fuse yet.

The first GTM 20 worked for about 2 weeks, the second failed right out of the box. Both units came from the same Circuit City store.

While waiting for the replacement GTM I purchased a standard Garmin 12 volt car adapter and it works correctly in both vehicles.

I'm sure Garmin engineers designed and completely tested the GTM 20 before going to production and that in the lab and all subsequent evaluations it performed to standard. If my latest GTM 20 continues to work then I believe Garmin may have a defective lot of GTM 20s out there. If this new GTM fails after a few weeks of use then I believe there potentially may be an issue with their manufacturer.

I would encourage you to call Garmin tech support if you experience this, endure the wait - enjoy the on hold music, and report your issue. I spoke with a gentleman named Scott and he was very helpful. I did receive a response from the initial e-mail inquiry I sent their tech support and basically they said they had never heard of the problem, have a great day.... Telephone was the way to go.
