Excellent value.......2007-05-13

I purchased this scanner to replace my microtek flatbed scanner so that I could continue to scan photos as well as some larger format negatives that would not fit into my Nikon Coolscan 9000. This scanner blows away Microtek's products. The quality for the photo scans is excellent, and even the scans of negatives is good. The only two drawbacks are the fact that I wish it could do larger than 8x10, and I also wish the scanning resolution was higher than 1200. Still, I have been able to make fantastic prints from my scans that do not look pixelized or digitzed at all. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! I will no longer be purchasing Microtek products again.

Canoscan 9950F Driver Issue: Workaround.......2007-04-29

A quick note to report that the scanner drivers will not work if you have a lot of applications installed that add to the system %PATH% environment variable.

Although the limit for %PATH% is over 2,000 characters, the CanoScan drivers fail with paths over about 700 characters.

It may be necessary to temporarily shorten your path variable when scanning.

I don't think Canon have been taking this problem seriously, as it has remained reported but not fixed (and not listed in the KB) for years, and seems to occur for multiple scanner models, not just the 9550F.

If you encounter an error message that reports 'rmslantc.dll' is missing (when it is clearly there) and you are advised to reinstall the drivers, you have encountered this bug. Some applications may not report a missing DLL, but may simply report the scanner is unavailable.

A useful workaround is to divide the %PATH% into system and user components, placing non-essential (non-system) path components into the user profile %PATH% variable. The user %PATH% can then be temporarily renamed on the fly (requires logout/login) without any risk of losing path components, as there would be with direct editing.

What is Next From Canon.......2007-04-12

This unit will blow you away. You would think Amazon screwed up and shipped you a Higher priced item. Very easy to use. It is very easy to look at with the sleek hi-tech design. The Software that came with it is easy enough to figure out and use if you never used a scanner, you'll be using it within the hour. Make copies. Use it for Ebay or Amazon to sell your stuff, with a very high resolution. Also I can save all my treasured pictures to disc w/o having to worry about them being stored in some box somewhere getting destroyed or misplaced. I can just burn them to discs. I must mention about a Camcorder I just purchased. It is a Sony DCR-DVD 505 for that trip to 50TH Annual Running at Daytona. "The Daytona 500"
Along with camcorder, the zoom and wide angle lens, case, and the remote tripod. I Highly recommend all these items. With Price and Free Shipping you can't best it..

Good Price-Great Product.......2007-04-11

I picked this product up here in Japan new for about U.S. $250.00(30,000yen). Actually the last version of the product is the CanoScan 9950FV. However, it is no longer being manufactured and is not listed in Canon's most current scanner product listing. Too bad! For that reason, I believe, I was able to pick it up for that price. Write and complain to Canon. Bring it back! Having read the reviews of the 9950F I searched the net for availability and found a shop. This is the only Canoscan scanner that will take this range of negative sizes. I wish that Fare(which uses infrared light to detect dust and then remove it)worked on Kodachrome and black and white film but there currently is no substitute technology-even on very expensive dedicated film scanners like Nikon's. My one complaint is that all of the software that came with the scanner here is in Japanese. Of course the basic English software can be downloaded from Canon's U.S. site. But the Adobe Photoshop Elements 2 cannot be. The scans are really beautiful and if you want to copy many photos, slides, negatives this is an indispensible product. 30 35mm negatives at a time, 12 slides, and the ability to scan those old box camera negatives from many years ago.

Product is unavailable and was listed anyway. Waited over a month to arrive and then gave up. There is no replace, what are they thinking. Buy something else from another supplier.

Amazon was exceptional with their support, got me a refund from the outside vendor immediately when asked.
