Product Description
The Deskstar 120GXP incorporates both new and proven technologies to boost system performance. This drive provides the capacity and performance to handle a wide range of advanced desktop and audio/video applications. Additionally, features such as low acoustics, low power, and Tagged Command Queuing make this drive ideal for non-PC, high-performance and special applications.AFC and glass disk technologies enable increased density. Thus, the Deskstar provides the necessary capacities using fewer heads and disks, which means fewer components and better reliability. The superior density combines with the faster processor and streamlined cache buffer to enable award-winning performance for both the Deskstar and your system. Enhancements to the servo system and thermal monitor help to enable accurate data storage and retrieval. These combined technologies enable popular capacity points and are also designed to increase reliability. Deskstar drives continue to utilize proven IBM technology such as TrueTrack servo and No-ID sector formatting.
Customer Reviews:
Judging by the other reviews, I don't think this was a fluke.......2003-07-29
I'm an IT professional specializing in data storage and I've been very impressed with IBMs storage products for several years now.
Now, I'm sad to say, my own home PC's hard drive has bitten the dust as well. When I cracked open my almost 2-year-old Dell to peek inside, what did I find...?
...a 40GB IBM Deskstar! I hope it's a fluke, because I'm a firm believer in IBMs products - but the fact remains that the only HOME PC hard drive I've ever had crash came from Big Blue.
Very reliable hard drive with very good tech support.......2003-02-26
This hard drive is simply put "Very Good." I am an Information Systems Manager at a Large Medical Group in Calif and have been using Western Digital due to company standards. When I was granted the responsibility for buying tech items, I decided to try the Deskstar lineup and they live up to the name IBM. I personally use a IBM Deskstar 10 Gig in my home computer and did not encounter any problems, crashes, or failures. I also have a Deskstar in my wife's computer and 2 Deskstar in my children's computer. Be cautious about what people say, just because you have a crash doesn't mean its the hard drive's fault. It can be the users fault for hardware crashes (ie programs and Drivers). Only reason I did not give 5 stars was due to the fact that the Deskstar lineup have a weak hard drive casing. Which means you have to becareful when installing the hard drive into the case. Other than that I think IBM Deskstar is one of the best.
First hard drive to ever crash on me.......2003-01-09
I've had many computers and many drives, but this is the first hard drive I've had that just inexplicably crashed on me. I turned on my computer, it started making loud grinding noises, and goodbye data. After reading other reviews, it's obvious that I'm not the only one to experience this from an IBM drive. I'll never buy an IBM hard drive again.
Stay away from IBM Deskstars! PLEASE!!.......2002-11-11
Do your research before you consider buying ANY IBM Deskstar drive. Unfortunately, when I bought this drive, there weren't many reported problems...yet. There are rumors of a faulty batch of drives, but I think the truth is, it was an engineering flaw. My drive actually lasted 1 year, longer than many others. Then, it started making the dreaded clicking and spinning noises. I was lucky enough to lose only 1 partition and could backup the rest. Now I'm hesitant about even sending this drive back to IBM, just to receive a refurbished one, which could be in worse condition. I think I'm gonna get a new drive (probably Western Digital) and use this one as a backup. There's no advantage to getting an IBM Deskstar, even if it's cheaper.. so just stay away.
Known to crash.......2002-11-06
6 mo. old drive works good but crashes when warmmed up. Was told they have faulty controllers that are sensitive to heat. Can't take a defragmentation with out crashing soon after in a 60 deg.f room
