Customer Reviews:
Unreliable and poor customer service.......2005-09-21
As others have pointed out, this is not a very reliable drive. It worked most of the time with my Windows machine but never with my Mac. Worst of all, I need a replacement power cord and the best Maxtor could do to help me was to say, "We do not have this item. See if you can find one on the internet."
Unreliable and error-prone.......2002-12-03
I had hoped this drive would provide cheap backup for a variety of files without the time and annoyance of cutting CDs or using other removable media.
It has instead proven to be unreliable and unstable. I've lost data, had it freeze up my system, had it cause conflicts with other firewire devices, and had it corrupt files and/or misplace parts of the file structure. The drive has so many problems that I connect it only when absolutely necessary.
The transfer speed is terrible, so much so that using a "find" utility to locate a file on the drive is unbearably long, always resulting in an error.
It may seem like a lot of storage for little money, but what is the value if it consistently loses data and crashes your system? Pay a little more and get something more reliable, it will be worth it.
Good external storage.......2002-09-11
Does not work properly on win 2K/Pro/Advanced/server ... watch out, will go on and off line for no reason, give buffer overruns, and sometimes refuse to come up at all. Maxtor sez windows problem. Microsoft sez maxtor problem. Switched to XP, and it works GREAT. You decide who lies.
I have 5 of them now.
Defective Design and Components.......2002-09-07
I bought one of these about a year ago and it only worked for about 3 weeks before it started going bad. The hard drive would spin down every few minutes unpredictably. When this happened when I was writing to it I got a lot of data loss of course. As I discovered later the power to the drive was not consistent. I pulled the drive out of the ... enclosure they had it in and put in my PC directly (it came formatted FAT-32) and it worked fine. There were two boards in the enclosure, an firewire to ide bridge board and one for distributing power from the external power supply. It turns out the board for the power supply is defective. I suspect there's a bad capacitor on that board, that's why it fails periodically. Geez these guys couldn't have spent a couple more cents and shipped the thing with more reliable components? ... I ripped out the bridge board and hard drive and have them inside an old scsi enclosure and it seems to work fine.
What a hassle they inflicted upon me just because they couldn't spend a couple more penniew on a higher grade of capacitor or a better board design.
Can't Count on It.......2002-09-04
I gave up trying to rely on this drive. I've had the drive a little over a year so it's out of warranty. I didn't use it often, maybe just about 30 hours of usage. The drive started making a clicking noise and sometimes doesn't spin up and I can't access my data. For two weeks it didn't start then finally on one day, it spun up!
I left the drive running for a few days with no problems and removed all the data. I scanned the disk for errors and reformatted without any problems. Good... so I shut it off and moved it to another computer and the $*)@&% thing won't spin up again. I give up.
Maxtor support was really good but basically told me I was out of luck because of the warranty. They don't repair them but will send you out a new drive.
Some advice... Keep the drive running all the time, if it's a hardware problem, it will fail within it's warranty.
