this product did both and was very user friendly

5 out of 5 stars great.......2006-05-04

I like this case very much, it's well made, sturdy and the zipper works fine. I especially like the fact that it's rectangular in shape with two sleeves per page and not one of those large square-shaped cases with four sleeves to a page that can be bulky and hard to use. I also like that it has eight handy sleeves on the front inside cover for those CDs I play a lot.

1 out of 5 stars Beware!!!.......2005-08-03

Be careful with this item shipped by J&R Music and Computer World. I purchased 6 of this due to the product image. It looks like leather and has a nice texture, BUT J&R Music and Computer World shipped a totaly different product, with another design in a vulgar plastic that doesn't looks like the image of this product. Very dissapointed.

5 out of 5 stars My first CD holder purchase.......2003-05-17

This seems to be a good case. The zipper is nice, the textures on the case are smooth and stylish, and the case has lots of room. The slots for each CD open "up", that is, they allow you to pull the CD out of the holder without touching the information side. Hopefully this case will last long.

1 out of 5 stars wasted hours trying to get it to work........2006-06-15

this is the worst piece of computer equipment I ever bought. after giving up on my last computer I boxed up the dvd burner and forgot about it. now I have a whole new computer without a dvd burner so I thought I would see if maybe the problem was my old computer like the people at iomagic said. I guess IOMagic was wrong again because it doesn't work in my new computer either.

1 out of 5 stars A piece.......2004-03-21

this burner is a waste of money period. i have two burners in my machine, one old DVD-R Pioneer 2x and just recently added this I/O "magic". i can't backup my cd's like i can with my pioneer. i use nero and when i try to make a copy of a cd it says, "please insert empty disc". but then when i take that same disc and put it in my pioneer it works fine. I/O magic's products are crap. unfortunately i didn't read the reviews on this drive before i bought it. saw a good price and jumped on it....oh well this will not happen again. be warned i usually don't waste my time writing reviews unless it is something peeps need to be aware of. THIS DRIVE BLOWS

4 out of 5 stars Good Product But Beware Of I/O Magic Rebates.......2004-03-20

The recorder performs well for me and so far has accepted all media I have tried. This is actually an Optorite DD0203 ± recorder. The only complaint I have is I/O Magic's failure to honor the offfered rebate. I purchased this unit in Aug 2003 and submitted the required items to receive the $30.00 rebate. Inquires to the status of the rebate resulted in "unable to locate anything in our system". I have submitted copies of the information two additional times and still no luck. I will never buy another I/O Magic product.

1 out of 5 stars Decent product, but don't count on getting your rebates!.......2004-01-14

I bought this product in September 2003 and haven't had any major problems with writing DVDs with it. However, I have not received the $50 in rebates that were promised as part of the purchase.

When contacted directly via phone, the rebate company (www.rebateservices.com) states that it has not received the requested information even though I have sent the documentation twice. The second time I sent copies of all the forms and UPC codes via certified mail which proves they received them. Two other people I know have had the same experience with this company.

Beware of I/O Magic rebates. If you're considering buying this product because it's offering a rebate, think again.

1 out of 5 stars I/OMagic DVD Writer not 2x or 4x per specs-Burns RW Coasters.......2004-01-02

PRO: Cheap

CON:
Cheap - Could not obtain reliablility with Nero Diagnostics at 2x or 4x. When I advised I/OMagic Tech Support of problem, they sent new software that disabled 2x and 4x. Not reliable even at 1x. Model IDVDRW4D DVD Writer makes coasters out of even +/-RW Rewritable media. I/OMAGIC refuses to provide refund. Claim no responsibility. Quoting their Manager of Customer Service email response: "we are a wholesaler of computer goods and as such, under no circumstances do we offer any refund(s) for products purchased." I would not expect anything better out of this or any other I/OMAGIC product. The "magic" is "on the box" and not "in the box".

SUGGESTIONS:
I have just trashed my I/OMagic and purchased a Plextor Model PX-708A. After extensive testing with Nero, on all four formats, I have not experienced a single data error. However, don't expect the "in the box" software (Roxio EasyCD/DVD Creator) to work on all four formats. The problem is the communication between the Plextor and Roxio's packet writing software - now called "Drag to Disc" which was formerly DirectCD. I have installed a trial version of Nero and all formats are working so looks like I will spend another $60-$90 to purchase Nero. Gets expensive when you can no longer trust what is "in the box" to work like what is "on the box".

After a very frustrating and time-consuming DVD writer experience, my suggestion would be to spend more money to purchase a higher quality unit or not to purchase at all if you are interested in writing DVD's. If all else is equal, look for Nero "in the box" if you need to use packet writing. An additional advantage is the Nero diagnostics which can be downloaded free at www.cdspeed2000.com. These diagnostics won't work with "Drag to Disc" or any other packet writing software installed because you can only have one packet writer installed. I suspect Nero's packet writer is embedded in the Nero diagnostics which are all *.exe files - no installation required. These tools are also included in Nero 6 Ultra edition.

Hope this helps you avoid my bad experience as I have benefited from many Amazon reviews. We can only hope to keep the manufacturers honest by sharing our experience - good and bad.

4 out of 5 stars CenDyne CDI CD00085 - Surprising Value.......2002-04-17

I picked this DVD-ROM drive up locally because it was marked down by more than 30%. This was lower than anything I've seen on-line. I was apprehensive - How could anything so inexpensive be any good? It turns out that this CenDyne CDI CD00085 DVD-ROM drive is solidly built, relatively quiet, works flawlessly and is worth more than I paid. (I have a HP CD-RW that seems pretty flimsy and cheap by comparison.) The software (WIN DVD) that came with the unit is pretty good too.

The one hang up- the documentation is POOR at best. The quality of the graphics in the installation guide was so bad, I could barely make out any detail. The software came with NO documentation.

In spite of this, the installation on my old Dimension XPST700r went pretty well with out any problems. (Fortunately, Dell has pretty good hardware and documentation.) I've also had the benefit of installing hardware before. I wouldn't recommend this "kit" as your first attempt to upgrade your hardware. It'll be pretty nerve wracking.

But if you know what you're doing and you're looking for a decent DVD-ROM drive to upgrade that old computer, this is definitely worth the look.

Product Description

Watching movies at home will never be the same. Get ready for over twice the definition of standard VHS and CD quality sound. It's DVD, the ultimate in home entertainment, and now you can own this exciting new technology in an affordable package. You can view movies in a wide screen format, in another language (with compatible discs), and with distortion-free special effects. And GE DVD players are totally compatible with music CDs, giving you the centerpiece of a high performance video and audio system.

Amazon.com Product Description

Enjoy cinema-quality video and sound at home with GE's GE1101P DVD player. The GE1101P features high-resolution video performance with multiple aspect ratios that can be switched between 4:3 and 16:9 (widescreen) at the touch of a button. And since it's both standard CD and MP3-CD compatible, you can use it to enjoy your favorite regular-format compact discs as well as MP3-encoded discs, CD-Rs, Video CDs, Super Video CDs, and DVD-Video movies.

The audio features on the GE1101P include Dolby Digital and DTS Bit Stream Output (through both coaxial and optical jacks) for full 5.1-channel surround sound capability. Upping the ante for fun, the GE1101P offers a microphone input for karaoke capability--just put on a karaoke CD, plug in your microphone (not included), and enjoy the music mixed with your singing right from your home speakers. You can even add reverberation to help cover for unsavory vocal quality!

GE has also built in a host of convenient features to take full advantage of DVD technology. A screen saver kicks in when a disc is paused for any length of time (preventing a still image from burning into your TV screen), while parental control keeps young eyes from viewing discs of your choice, and picture zoom lets you magnify scenes or stills of particular interest. A jog-shuttle dial control provides automatic track selection for CDs, and a full complement of other operational controls are included on the front panel.

The connectivity options on the GE1101P DVD player include standard composite-video and high-quality S-video outputs (for use with compatible TVs and/or surround receivers).

GE's GE1101P DVD player comes with a remote control (three AAA batteries included).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good cheap DVD player.......2007-04-22

I've had mine for 3 years or so without any real problems at all. The power button thing is odd, but I've left mine running for 24 plus hours several times without problems. And this was in a 80+ degree room without any form of extra cooling. My major gripe is the MP3 menu is garbage. It doesn't display the titles very well and for some reason it doesn't place them in the order on the disc, but rather places cycles through them in a weird alphabetical order. But as cheap as this was to buy I'm amazed it even can play everything that it does. I like the looks too, it looks like an old school piece of electronics which fits in well with everything else I have that's at least 10 years old.

5 out of 5 stars Best Dvd player I've ever used.......2005-02-27

Okay here's the deal, yes there are beter dvd players out there, no they are NOT worth the extra money as there is very little that is wrong with this one. 1st off this is a good dvd player, it will play your movies with no problems pauses or skips, 2 It plays vcd's and I've heard(and about to test)that it can play mpeg cd's. this should NOT be bought for the karaoake feature, get a karaoake machine for that, its great fun though, to play with the voices on the dvd(I found it hilarious on harry potter to turn harry's voice really low and then turn Hagrid's voice up really high). Now after about 2 or 3 years it quit reading disc, started saying "no disc" no matter what disc I put in. I unscrewed the top pannel took it off and found that it quit spinning the disc. All it takes is a lil nudge and it works, so you might haft to do a little dirty work but its worth it for the cheap dvd player is it not? It only took about 2 minutes to take the lid off and you should see what I'm talking about after doing that. However that might void any warranty but I have had it so long the warrinty is void anyways. I HIGHLY suggest getting this player, never found a dvd player as good as it before(regardless of price, but a portable version of this dvd player would be nice GE >_^)

4 out of 5 stars Overall great product, but misleading packaging.......2005-01-04

I've had this dvd player for a long time now (probably about 4 years or so) and it works great. It was cheap at the time i bought it considering all of the features. It still works like new even after 4 years of use, and I practically never turn it off because I'm way too lazy to go up to the thing to press power. It does have some bad things about it though. Like the fact the remote doesn't have a power button kind of pis*es me off. But oh well. Also, it lets customers believe that it's a karaoke machine, when really you can only plug in a mic and sing along, but not play cd+g. It really should say that somewhere in the box or the manual, but still, for the money, that's really all you can expect.

5 out of 5 stars Was this really only $100??.......2004-09-26

This product is great. Although it is a very cheaply made player, and actually built by a company called Shinco out of China (as are the majority of Apex DVD players), I could not have asked for something better in a DVD player.
Contrary to what everyone else has said, I have not EVER had ONE single problem with my 1101p, and I have had it for approximately 2 years. I am worried it will have a problem soon though, because since I am an electronics geek and all, I noticed one problem... there's no ventilation for the heat generated by internal parts! This however can simply be solved by drilling a few holes in the cover above the main processing unit, and if you wanna go all the way with cooling, then install a small heat sink and CPU fan.
Other than that I have very few qualms about it. EVERY single disc I've ever thrown into this thing that was burned correctly has played, without any problems. It plays everything from VCDs to SVCDs to MP3 discs to burned CDRs, as well of course industrial discs. And believe it or not, this even plays the dreaded DVD+R and DVD+RW discs without preference to certain dyes on the disc or anything. I have not tested DVD-R or DVD-RWs however. And it does not play DVD-RAMS, but pretty much nothing but Panasonic players do anyway. The video quality is exceptional out of the box, and now it's even better for me since I upgraded the firmware. It made a difference, and also loads discs faster. (If you're thinking about doing this, be sure to know what you're doing, otherwise you will literally not be able to use your DVD player again, and it's irreversible if you mess up. Stick with the original if you don't even know what to do, I'm just a geek). It also has DTS streaming output in addition to Dolby, which is very rare for a player in this price range, as well as a digital optical output, which is also rare for a low-end player. I have it hooked up through the oaxial out to my Sony HT receiver, and it plays 5.1 surround pretty well. It even has an adjustable DRC (Dynamic Range Compressor, a feature also known as Midnight Theater) built in. The player, really, all in all, is close to perfect.
However, nothing is perfect. I DO have a few issues with this: one is the remote control. This is because it is very poorly laid out and I still search for buttons after having it for 2 years. The power switch also works purely on voltage interruption rather than software standby, so you have to go to the unit to turn it off manually. Secondly, the MP3 file on-screen identification is close to a joke. It does not display more than the first 6 characters of a file name, when burned in the Joliet data disc format. Thirdly is another reference to the remote: the function of menu selection is not on the front panel of the player, so if you lose or break the remote, you lose menu control. My last qualm is the uselessness of both the karaoke interface and the built-in volume, mute, pitch, and echo controls. First off, this is a DVD player, if you want karaoke go buy a karaoke machine. If you really are into karaoke, you'd happen to figure out that you should burn karaoke CDs as VCDs or SVCDs, not CD-Gs, for this model. Secondly, why would you need a volume and mute control if they are so far from being refined? It does not have memory for any of the settings and does not effectively adjust the sound levels in equal increments. Useless feature. I hate useless features.
Oh, I also don't like how the mainboards inside were mounted with the screws going through the bottom of the case, thus the player sits up from the surface relatively high. The size is large too. But this is being picky. The unit is generally attractive.
ALl in all, this player rules. If you want a player that plays everything well, is easily upgradeable for you tech geeks like me, and all for a killer price, look no further than this player right here.

to the people who had problems, here's the solutions:
To the person who had the picture with the rolling black and white bars, that's probably because your TV works on one standard such as NTSC or PAL and the player's output is set to the opposite. To correct this, while a movie is playing, hit the "clear" button on the remote.
For the person who could not get their MP3s to play (29 out of 129 files on the cd)... a few things you might have run into: one is maybe just your burner did not burn the CD correctly. Second is because you exceeded the maximum directory depth/number of files in one directory. Third is because the bitrate may be incompatible with the player (I elieve this supports from 64 KBPS - 320 KBPS CBR, and some VBR files). Last, is because you authored the files in MPEG II encoding format where the samplerate is 48000 HZ - I believe this player will only play MP3 files authored at 44100 HZ (I tried to play a file once at 22000 HZ and it was garbled).
Last, to the people who have movies lock up on them: it's most likely not the player, it's likely the DVD, believe it or not, there are such things as "bad DVDs". Sometimes the layer transitions are not correctly set or it just plain wasn't recorded correctly... even though these things ARE rare.

Hope this review helps.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars I had no luck with it..........2007-02-08

The software is hard to use. For example, when browsing styles initially, you only see a small thumbnail, which makes it very hard to pick a style from. I also had problems getting a centered label. I used quite a few sheets of the labels trying to "calibrate" the printing, only to realize it prints it in a different location every time. This may be just an issue with my printer (HP Deskjet 5440), but it is off by up to 1/2 the label most prints. Also, the small tags in the center make the labels look unprofessional.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2006-11-27

As usual I jumped into buying something without reading the fine print or these reviews!
I thought I was getting a label maker that was easy, that could "read" the cd and list the songs automatically, after I pick the style. It doesn't. I have to manually type the tracks and information. Also, it is not adapatable to any other paper than their own memorex.

The product is a good value. It performed well and was fairly easy to use. I only wish it would allow importing play lists from iTunes, all text had to be manually input. Overall, I'm very satisfied with the product.

2 out of 5 stars Don't bother using the software that comes with this kit.......2005-11-13

The main reason I bought this kit was for the label applicator, the software was secondary. Good thing that I didn't care about how good the software would be, because the software for this is, in a word, deplorable.

It doesn't have support for ANY other label sheets other than the memorex brand, which leaves you stuck with their labels. Its got some nice features in the software, but their poorly implemented. For instance, it can automatically resize an image to fit a CD/DVD, but if you've rotated it before that, the rotation is lost. It has a lot of minor quirks like that, and they add up to an annoyance to use this.

If you get this product, find a better labelling program to go with the label sheets and the applicator.

4 out of 5 stars No Problems with this Software on an iMac.......2005-01-16

I recently purchased this labelmaker system for use on my iMac, and have had no problems at all. I printed out my CD labels on an Epson CX5200. The quality of the printouts isn't as clear as I'd like (most likely due to the quality of the paper), but it's not bad for a home system that cost under $20. It's easy, quick, and has lots of cool graphics.

      Product Description

Ricoh's MP9060A internal DVD plus CD-RW drive is a cost-effective solution for watching movies, storing audio/video files, creating presentations, backing up data, and making your own music CDs! It also provides a 200ms average random access time and a 95ms seek time when reading DVD media and a 120ms average random access time and a 110ms seek time when reading CDs. Plus, it is compatible with all DVD and CD-ROM media, as well as CD-R and CD-RW discs. The MP9060A allows you to record reliably and consistently at 6X (900KB per second) on write-once CD-R media, which are perfect for archiving data or sharing files, and also allows you to record, erase, and re-record on the same disc up to 1, 000 times at 4X (600KB per second). It also has a 24X CD-ROM read speed (3, 600KB per second), so you don't ever have to wait to review your data. This DVD Plus CD-Rewriter is a real time saver! It features a large 2MB buffer, which helps to eliminate buffer under run and prevent wasted media, and an EIDE/ATAPI interface, which makes installation quick and easy. Simply slip it into an available half-height bay and plug in the cables. If you are running Windows 95 or 98, your computer will recognize the drive immediately.

      Amazon.com Review

Most PCs ship with DVD-ROM drives these days, and some even come with CD-RW (rewritable) drives for recording data to CD media, but only the most expensive systems have one of each. Now Ricoh has done something unheard of by combining both DVD-ROM and a CD-RW drive into a single unit and offering it in kit form at a reasonable price.

The specifications for Ricoh's MP9060A are impressive. It reads DVDs at 4x speed and CD-ROMs at 24x speed. It also writes data to CD-R media at up to 6x speed and to CD-RW media at up to 4x speed. Some separate DVD drives and CD recorders are faster, but none combine the multimedia and backup abilities the MP9060A boasts.

The drive comes with nearly everything you need to get started, with the surprising omission of an EIDE cable to attach it to the motherboard. Ricoh must have assumed customers would use the MP9060A as a replacement for an existing drive, in which case you could use the old cable. But if you plan to use the MP9060A in a system you're building, you'll have to supply the requisite cable. In a slave configuration (the way we tested it), the MP9060A can attach to the second port on the EIDE cable already attached to the master drive, so this shouldn't be a problem.

The drive includes an audio cable in addition to mounting screws, a software CD, a blank CD-R disc, and a blank CD-RW disc. We had to move a jumper to set the drive up as a slave device on our system, and that simple step was as tough as the hardware installation. The drive installed as soon as Windows detected it, and it was operational within 10 minutes of taking it out of the box.

The only thing holding this drive back from its full potential is the bundled software. The MP9060A comes with a hobbled "lite" version of Adaptec's Easy CD Creator, which failed to copy nearly every CD we tested. We used some better software that already was installed on our system and discovered the MP9060A is an excellent and accurate CD recorder if the software is up to snuff. The included Adaptec DirectCD software, used to make a CD-RW disc act like an external hard drive, worked well.

Setting up the DVD playback software is more cumbersome that it should be, due mainly to poor documentation. We couldn't even play DVD movies until we established a regional code for the drive, which involves scrounging for a password and serial number that isn't even mentioned in the setup documentation.

After going through all that, we still received a regional coding violation when we loaded a DVD. The Cinemaster software finally let us permanently enable the proper coding, but the process was intrusive, to say the least.

Once we jumped through the requisite hoops, we were left with a great DVD-ROM drive that also happened to be able to record on CD-R and CD-RW discs. While recording to DVD media is beyond the capabilities of this drive, it still makes for a reliable backup device that is also fairly speedy for a CD-RW drive. The Cinemaster software isn't the best we've ever encountered, but when combined with the accurate abilities of the MP9060A, it was able to play a horribly mangled DVD disc that most other DVD drives can't even detect.

If you decide to buy the MP9060A, it's likely you'll soon pine for a more robust software suite and perhaps a hardware DVD decoder, so you may want to factor that into your final price. Otherwise, the MP9060A is a sturdy, quiet drive that packs more than enough functionality and build quality to justify its price tag. --T. Byrl Baker

2 out of 5 stars Burn the player not the CD.......2003-01-15

I bought this combo CDRW/DVD player a couple of years ago and it has perform horribly. It's been a major headache since then. When I first install the CDRW/DVD player, it already had problems playing DVDs. At first, I thought it was my DVDs but when I play them on a DVD console it played them fine.
This Ricoh CDRW/DVD player "hick-ups" alot about 30 minutes into the movie. You can hear a distintive "grinding" noise from the motor to have the lazer head to re-read the skip track on DVD. The motor will spin 3 times to attempt continuous play and then gives up and stop all playback. Also, I notice that new DVDs have a copper underface compared to the older silver underface. These new DVDs do NOT work at all this MP9060 player. It has a hard time reading the disk all the time and will skip continuously. Call customer service did not help me at all and they have not called me back regarding how to solve the problem.
As a CDRW, it performs unsatisfactory but it will burn CDs if you are willing to buy alot of them to make one CD.
Save your money and go with another brand. I will never buy any Ricoh products ever.

4 out of 5 stars All-In-One Device... Great Value for the Average User.......2000-09-21

If you've been waiting for CDs to be replaced by DVDs, and are starting to become a bit impatient 'cos it doesn't seem to be happening, this unit maybe just what you'll need right now during this painfully slow transition period.

CD writing ability of this drive is generally fairly good, although I did find that there was one particular major brand of CD-R which caused the drive to almost hang up, and was unable to make any sort of successful recordings on it. Otherwise, the qualities of the recordings were very consistent. However, older drives might have problems in reading CDs created by this drive. One other problem detected was the inconsistencies between the size of files to be recorded (as reported by the bundled software) and the actual size of the recordings made, which means quite often you'll find that you're unable to pack in all the files you originally planned.

DVD reading is adequate and satisfactory. As usual, the quality DVD video playback will be greatly enhanced if accompanied by a decent graphics card and/or hardware decoder. The speed of the drive should be sufficient for any DVD videos, and if there are any pauses during playback (which there weren't many at all), it is probably due to the quality of the laser pickup.

To summarise, there is nothing exciting or outstanding about this unit, but its major selling point is that it is extremely good-value for what it does, and also saves a lot of space. Be warned that the unit does heat up quite a bit while it is on (even when it's not actually recording!), although I don't think that should cause any problems. And like most multi-function-in-one devices, don't expect it will last very long.

5 out of 5 stars Good Value for the Price........2000-06-25

If your computer beats the minimum system requirenments, you will have no problems with your DVD. The write and rewrite options work good, no bad cd's so far. For the current price, you can pretty much get the same value. This drive is optimal if you have limited bays, or just don't want to buy seperate drives. Over all, this is a good value. Works fine with the right pc. Even though, I don't suggest buying this just for watching movies or just for making cd's.

      4 out of 5 stars A great value?.......2000-05-30

Great if you have a limited number of drive bays. I found the 4x DVD drive to be a little slow, and there were occasional pauses during playback of The Matrix. The writing capabilities of this drive are amazing! I upgraded from a 2x CDRW drive and I'll say that this one blows the pants off of it. But for $299, you can probably find a faster DVD drive and an equivalent CDRW drive for about the same price.

4 out of 5 stars DVD Burner that is good for right now........2002-06-21

This portable USB DVD burner is a great device.

I plugged this drive in and Windows XP assigned it a letter instantly. No fidegting, no need to install drivers. Works great. [The supplied disk also has Windows 98 drivers.]

The supplied software (Burner software and DVD player) is easy to use and install.

This device is an oasis in the middle of DVD competing technologies. Burning all varieties of DVD on all types of media.

As a portable device it is a little bulky. However, it comes with a nice carrying case (with a shoulder strap) Also, Que sells an internal model, does all the same things.

The only minus (which is why it has 4 stars) it is a little slow for burning DVD's.

Overall this is a realible, easy to use and well designed product. Making DVD burning for non-techies very easy.
