Remote / Work from home.......2006-03-22

As is more commonplace these days, I work "remotely" for a corporation. This requires some heavy printing on occasion of simple documents, charts, graphs etc. Set-up was extremely easy, the quality of print is excellent with no blurring, and printing time is at a quite acceptable speed. I have had no technical issues with it and consider it a must have. When I have switched the printer from my den to bedroom it was simply a matter of unplugging and plugging it in..what could be easier. I would highly recommend this printer for the on-the-go remote worker or anyone else who enjoys the convenience of not only a fine printer but that of mobility. Bottomline, its a quality printer, that is quiet, speedy and mobile.

Exactly what I needed.......2006-03-10

I bought this for small office printing, with occasional larger jobs. I wanted a lower cost-per-page than an inkjet. The most valuable features for me are the automatic double-sided printing and the wireless capability. I really had no problem with installation on my Mac. The text is very crisp, photos are pretty good as well, printing from color originals. It's fairly quiet in operation. My only wish is that they still made the supplementary paper tray. Sometimes the 250 sheets in the standard tray go pretty quickly. Overall I'm very pleased.

Great printer, but installation is tricky.......2005-08-26

This is an excellent printer. Although it is aesthetically pleasing, I keep it in my closet so that I can free up desk space. This is one of the significant benefits of the printer's wireless capability - you can put it anywhere and still print. I have no complaints about the functionality of the product. It works well and smoothly. However, the installation process, as set out in the manual, is a bit confusing. Here is some simple advice on how to properly install the printer on a totally wireless network (my wireless router isn't plugged directly into any computer - some people keep their router connected to a desk top computer). This process should work even if your network is not totally wireless. First, set up the printer near your wireless router and plug it in, but don't turn it on yet. Second, plug the network cable into both the back of the printer and the wireless router. Third, turn on the printer and wait about 2 minutes (make sure the little green light next to where you plug the network cable into the back of the printer is on - this means you have it properly connected to the wireless router). Fourth, install the software on your computer. The software is fairly easy to install because it walks you through each step. I didn't run into the installation problems one of the other reviewers suffered. If your wireless network does have security enabled (I use WEP), you should choose to install the printer with security. I did, and the process was flawless. If you follow the software prompts carefully, you will not have a problem installing the printer. Good job on this product HP.

Wireless rocks, but the set up can be frustrating........2005-08-13

I was skeptical about paying extra for the wireless networking capabilities, but I have found this to be a real plus. My biggest complaint so far is the set up wizard is a bit frustrating, at least for me. I wanted to use this printer with my wireless DSL modem. The paper set up manual clearly indicates which installation mode I should choose (the infrastructure mode). So I go through the set-up wizard from the CD-ROM. I wanted to make sure the printer could utilize the security settings of the wireless network, just to make extra sure that nothing unsecured was going to happen. So I tried to set this up as "secured authentication." This cause a "severe error" in the set up. I tried this several times with the same results. Finally I decided to choose the "open authentication" which according to the wizard means unsecured. It turned out that choosing "open authentication" is exactly the right option, because on the next screen the wizard prompts you to add the security settings in order to avoid an unsecured network connection. And the printer installed flawlessly after that!

I love having the wireless networking capability. The printer no longer needs to take up valuable space on my desk.

The 1320nw also has built-in 2-sided printing (duplexing). This can be turned on for each print job as you need it. This is definitely cool.

My only other complaint is I would really have liked to purchase an additional 500-page capacity paper tray. This add-on is apparently not available for sale.

1320nw - some things good and some things bad.......2005-01-05

I recently bought this printer to upgrade from my HP Laserjet 6MP. I also own a Laserjet 1200n. I purchased this printer as my Laserjet 6MP always needed to have fonts downloaded to it, and that was getting to be a problem. The installation and set up of this printer was pretty easy - I connected it directly to ethernet TCP/IP network without a problem. However, the main problem with the printer is with the Manual Feed - there is no support tray for the manual feed, and so you have to feed each page by hand. Also, the behavior of the manual feed is different on the Mac vs Windows. On Windows, the driver seems to wait for you to put the paper in- but on the Mac (OSX), when I print and choose manual feed the printer just takes the paper from the tray - I have to make sure that the paper is already in the manual feed slot. So, if you are printing checks, like I am trying to do, with manual feed, I would suggest looking at a different printer. To try to solve my check printing problem, I looked into buying the optional second paper tray - part number Q5931A. It really is optional, though - numerous phone calls to HP's parts department and their online store seems to lead me to the conclusion that the part is no longer available.
I guess I'm still waiting for the perfect printer. This one is not it.
