Product Description

Panasonic SL-SX480A is a very compact portable CD player. Not only will it play CDs that you buy in stores but it will also play CDR and CDRW discs recorded on your computer, including those encoded with MP3 files. Panasonic has developed new technologies, integrated into the SL-SX480A, that allow for a better listening experience than found on other portable CD players.
Advanced D.sound technology is comprised of four components that work together to elevate your audio experience to the next level. A Digital Amplifier helps reduce distortion and also helps you achieve crystal-clear sound?even at higher volume levels. The S-XBS and Digital Audio Gain Control help to improve bass response at higher volume levels and MP3 Re-Master technology allows the listener to receive outstanding sound quality from compressed music files, such as MP3. Harmonized Bass technology reproduces the harmonic series of bass components. This gives the listener the sensation of a fuller bass sound that cannot actually be reproduced with headphones and compact speakers. No-Skip Anti-Skip system lets you run, move, and jog while listening to flawless CD play.
Get the most efficiency out of battery power. You can achieve up to 75 hours of MP3 and up to 33 hours of CD-DA playback with just two AA alkaline batteries (not included).
Extraordinarily compact, with a diameter at just about the size of a CD itself, the Panasonic SL-SX480A proves itself to be a reliable performer. It's an affordable and practical way to carry music with you - where ever you choose to go. D.SOUND headphones included Sleek, round design Powered by 2 AA Alkaline Batteries Color - Blue Unit Dimensions (H x W x D) 31/32'' x 5-14/32'' x 5-14/32''; Weight 0.46 lbs

Amazon.com Product Description

Measuring just under an inch thick and weighing less than half a pound, the Panasonic SL-SX480A personal CD player is a great choice whether you're working out at the gym, commuting on the train, or listening at home in the bedroom. The player boasts a sleek, round housing with an attractive blue cover that snaps down securely during playback. More significantly, the unit plays more than just prerecorded CDs, with compatibility for both CD-R/RW discs and compressed MP3 files burned onto a CD-R/RW. The expanded playback options give users access to far more of their digital music library each time they leave the house. Active users will also appreciate the anti-skip system and its related backup memory function (45 seconds for CDs and 100 seconds for MP3s), which combine to ensure a disruption-free listening experience while jogging or driving.

At the core of the SL-SX480A's audio performance is Panasonic's advanced D.sound technology, which comprises four main components: a digital amplifier that reduces distortion for a clearer overall sound; the bass-enhancing facility of the S-XBS super bass boost and the digital audio gain control; and an MP3 remastering function that restores much of the lost fidelity of compressed MP3 audio files. The system also includes four equalizer settings to further enhance the audio experience.

And Panasonic wasn't content to stop there. The company also added a function called H.Bass, which reproduces the series of harmonic bass components that most headphones and compact speakers can't touch. As a result, the listener will enjoy the sensation of fuller bass through the SL-SX480A even when listening over a set of compact ear buds.

Also impressive is the array of playback functions--including 20-track programming, repeat play (one and all tracks), and random play--and the CD player's extra-long playback times, which extend up to 75 hours for MP3s and 33 hours for CDs. The CD player, which measures 5.43 inches in diameter, runs on a pair of AA alkaline batteries and comes with Panasonic's D.sound stereo headphones. The unit also carries a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

5 out of 5 stars A very good product.......2007-04-11

I've owned this CD player for 3 weeks by now. The sound quality is great, and I'm also very satisfied with the anti-skip function - I have walked around a lot with the player in my pocket, and have not seen a single skip so far. The battery life is less than stated, but is still at least 40-50 hours with Duracell batteries in.

5 out of 5 stars Panasonic SL-SX480A Portable CD Player, Blue.......2007-03-27

This is the best sounding portable CD player I have ever heard. The sound and the bass is superb. The headphones are comfortable. I bought the refurbished model and it is a steal at this price. I highly recommend this CD player because it is a good buy and it sounds good!

2 out of 5 stars did not last long.......2007-06-18

It did not last more than a few months before it broke. It was never dropped either.

2 out of 5 stars Typical Cheap Chinese Product.......2007-05-27

The review stating that this is the only model NOT made in China has been deleted, though that was my main reason for buying it. The sound is OK. The design is the problem. The battery compartment is located in the most inconvenient place and you need a tool to pry out the batteries (which it uses up too fast). There is no external power option at all. The controls are tiny and marked white on white. I will not be buying any more Panasonic products.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-05-25

This CD player is perfect for listening to either music or audio books. It has the "resume play" feature that allows you to listen to a track one day, turn the player off and continue at the same point the next day. The resume play works on both CDs and MP3s. The sound quality is very good. The unit is lightweight. The control buttons are small but are easy to use. It doesn't have a radio but you can buy the next model up for $10 more if that's important.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice!.......2007-05-12

I was shopping for an MP3 player and decided to look and see it the latest portable CD players would play MP3's, and of course they will. So after reading reviews on the cheaper MP3 players and comparing prices I decided to get this. It can play MP3's from a CD-R or RW. The way I have my MP3's organized works well with this for me. If you burn multiple folders to a CD, it treats each folder as an "album". It plays the albums and the tracks in alphabetical order. All my MP3's are in a folder for each album, and the files are named starting with the track number. So for me, it plays everything in the right order. It will move between tracks in each folder, or hold the button to move between folders. It has a "hold" switch that slides that will stop the buttons from doing anything. Useful if you put it in a case or pocket where the buttons might get accidentally pressed. It also remembers the where you were on the last disc it was playing. This can be handy for some things.

Disadvantages:
The display is small with no backlight.

The buttons are small and difficult to read, but not so bad that I wouldn't buy it again.

The headphones are awful. I guess that's to be expected with such an inexpensive CD player. I'm used to pro quality studio headphones though, so they may not seem as bad to a more casual listener. I'll use them for mowing the yard, but in general I'll use headphones that cost 5 times what the player costs. It does sound good through good headphones BTW.

It will not fast forward or rewind through an MP3. Not a big deal, but I wish it would do this. It does do it for standard CD's.

In spite of these minor issues, it's a nice little device for the price and I would definitely buy it again

Edit:
One more thing I'd like to mention - the battery compartment is in a very silly spot. It's under where the CD goes and toward the back, close to the hinge for the top. It makes changing batteries a little tricky.

3 out of 5 stars Good player, free shipping.......2007-04-28

I use this for books on tape and the feature that remembers where you left off is the reason I bought it. The small buttons are a problem, but I got used to the feel of them. The earphones are very WHITE, clunky, and not very comfy and look old fashioned, so I bought others. Has a good volume level and doesn't skip. I always have good luck with Panasonic products. I hope they keep the quality up. Love the free super-saver shipping-things show up FAST, even though they say it will take 3 to 5 days extra. I usually get things in 3 or 4 days. Zoom.

Amazon.com Product Description

The Panasonic SL-SV590 Portable CD Player and Headphones uses advanced D.sound technology, which is comprised of four components that work together to elevate your audio experience. A digital amplifier helps reduce distortion and also helps you achieve crystal-clear sound, even at higher volume levels. The S-XBS and Digital Audio Gain Control help to improve bass response at higher volume levels, and MP3 Re-Master technology allows you to receive outstanding sound quality from compressed music files such as MP3 and WMA.

Without H.Bass (Harmonized Bass), headphones and compact speakers cannot reproduce some of the bass sound components that are included in music. Panasonic's H.Bass technology reproduces the harmonic series of bass components. This provides the sensation of a fuller bass sound that cannot actually be reproduced with headphones and compact speakers.

MP3 is the most popular and widely used digital audio compression format available today. Since MP3 files are so small, you can burn a library of music onto CD-R/RWs and play them back on your SL-SV590 Portable CD player. The SL-SV590 also has a built-in digital tuner that allows you to tune into your favorite FM radio stations, and the no-skip/anti-skip system helps provide continuous listening by reducing or eliminating CD skipping during most active uses. It even has a backup memory feature that helps provide further assurance of a skip-free listening experience.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very nice product.......2007-06-19

Just got it for my mom. It is a nice product. It plays regular as well as mp3 CDs just fine. The sound is very good for my taste even with the headphones that come with the product. My only complaint is that it very hard to read the button labels. If they were market with a different color they would be more distinguishable. Other than that it works really well.

4 out of 5 stars Good for the price.......2007-06-09

Panasonic SL-SV590 good points:

- Reliable even when bumped or reading scratched CDs
- Can play standard CDs more than 30 hours on two AA cells
- 4 pre-set bass equalization settings (2 work with FM) and 2 pre-set "surround" settings (neither works with FM) may amuse restless youngsters
- Pause and resume setting is retained when powered off
- Station pre-sets are retained when battery is changed
- Relatively straightforward and self-evident control layout
- Plays MP3
- Good FM radio with stereo/mono and normal/city settings stores 20 frequencies in memory
- Hold switch

Possible deficiencies for some users:

- Typically mediocre headphones included
- "Flat" response claimed is +0.5, -7 dB @ 20-20kHz!! (Is this Panasonic's idea of a joke?)
- Raspy distortion of voice and brass (typical McDigital sound) is evident even with best ("flat") settings when using excellent Sony MDR-V6 headphones
- No AM radio
- No MP3 encoding software is included (but thankfully none of Sony's buggy proprietary ATRAC spyware is included either)
- Can't play WMA despite Amazon description
- No power or line jacks
- Battery change is awkward
- Controls and screen are tiny and nearly illegible
- Lid opens very easily when edge is bumped
- Button volume controls (typical of today's products but inconvenient compared to wheel)
- Looks and feels cheap

In summary, this is a good modern product of its type for the price, and there may currently be none better at its price, but its deficiencies may lead some buyers to seek older better machines.

4 out of 5 stars Good sound, good alternative MP3 player........2007-04-27

Nice little CD player. It has four different bass settings. It also can remaster your MP3's to make them sound more full. The sound is not too bright and more neutral. The included headphones are nothing to brag about but most free headphones are like that. The battery life is excellent. The FM is also excellent. Overall, a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars Better sound that my old sony discman.......2007-03-15

I have to get used to the control buttons but that's because I've always had Sony portable players. This player doesn't distort like my old Sony Discman used to. I never used the headpnones that come along this product because I invested 60 bucks in a pair of 300 cx Sennheiser that sound clearer than the Sony and Panasonic headphones I've had.
I'd recommend this product if sound quality is a concern.

4 out of 5 stars Good Buy.......2006-08-03

I know I'm premature in writing a review since I just bought my player today but I'm bored so I'm gonna write one anyway. I am listening to Let it Be by The Replacements and I'm very impressed by the sound quality, especially considering the mid-range price tag. I was vacillating between this unit and the DEJ010, but the stylish sleekness was kind of a red flag. I've noticed that with audio equipment good products are often plain and that a pretty exterior is used to con unwitting consumers into purchasing something of poor quality. KOSS CD players being a perfect example. Admittedly, the blue, orange, and white colors seem to clash a little, but it strikes me as more of a naive and endearing quirk than an annoying flaw. What is more bothersome is why Panasonic insisted on making the buttons and the screen so small and placing them in a less than convenient spot, which is the front edge instead of the top. At any rate, the screen, although small, is crisp and easy to read and my complaints are nothing I can't get over. Overall the design is practical and durable and not obnoxiously hip like other cd players I've seen. Also, if you're looking for good headphones, I highly recommend KOSS PortaPro headphones. The design hasn't changed since it was conceived in the 80s so it's also a bit of an eyesore but they are really amazing headphones.

Measuring just under an inch thick and weighing less than half a pound, the Panasonic SL-SV590W personal CD player is a great fit whether you're working out at the gym, commuting on the train, or listening at home in the bedroom. The cover boasts a sleek white finish that's complemented by the pair of matching headphones, which sport a white headband of their own.

- Can't play WMA
- No power or line jacks
- Battery change is awkward
- Controls and screen are tiny and nearly illegible
- Lid opens very easily when edge is bumped
- Button volume controls (typical of today's products but inconvenient compared to wheel)
- Looks and feels cheap

In summary, this is a good modern product of its type for the price, and there may currently be none better at its price, but its deficiencies may lead some buyers to seek older better machines.

Amazon.com Product Description

Measuring just under an inch thick and weighing a mere 5.4 ounces without the battery, the Panasonic SL-CT720 personal CD player is a great fit whether you're working out at the gym, commuting on the train, or listening at home in the bedroom. The cover boasts a sleek, elegant finish that's complemented by a matching remote, which lets listeners control the device with their thumbs while exercising. More significantly, the unit plays more than just prerecorded CDs, with compatibility for both CD-R/RW discs and compressed MP3 files burned onto a CD-R/RW. The expanded playback options give users access to far more of their digital music library each time they leave the house. Active users will also appreciate the anti-skip protection and its related backup memory function, which combine to ensure a disruption-free listening experience while jogging or driving.

At the core of the SL-CT720's audio performance is Panasonic's advanced D.sound technology, which comprises four main components: a digital amplifier that reduces distortion for a clearer overall sound; the bass-enhancing capacity of S-XBS super bass boost and the digital audio gain control; and an MP3 remastering function that restores much of the lost fidelity of compressed MP3 audio files. The system also includes six equalizer presets to further enhance the audio experience.

Another nice feature is the SL-CT720's ID3 tagging function, which reads the title, artist, and album information of each MP3 file and displays it on both the main LCD screen and the remote control. Also impressive is the CD player's extra-long playback times, which extend up to 140 hours for MP3s and 80 hours for CDs. To enjoy the full times, merely pop a pair of rechargeable NiMH batteries in the main compartment and a pair of AA alkalines in the included external battery case. The device also comes with a pair stereo headphones and an AC adapter.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome discman! But no screen on it, bundled headphones suck and you MUST buy a carrying case........2007-03-04

This is a great discman, I actually prefer it over the CT-710, wihch I had but it broke (due to lack of care I guess). This one has more advantages than the 710, most notable is that it has 2 more sound modes (3D-1, 3D-2), which the 710 does not have. The latter is nicer in many ways, for example, the buttons in the discman light up, but those are minor details that are not really relevant.

As with the 710, this discman has two major problems:

- It does not have a screen in the discman itself (although that's why the remote is for obviously).
- It is perhaps TOO small, meaning that if you drop it a few times it'll go Kaput. So you MUST buy a carrying case, I didn't buy one for my 710 (something I deeply regret) and it didn't last more than a year! So it'd be better to do a small inversion in one than having to buy another discaman in the near future.

- Another problem is the bundled headphones, which are terribly designed but have great sound. The poroblem is that the left cord is MUCH shorter than the right one, so you'll have some trouble in that sense.

Well, the good things are that it is a lovely discman, it comes wwith rechargable batteries (which last A LOT), so no worries about having to buy some, yet if you want to it comes with a "tube" in wich ye insert some regular AA batteries and you attach it to the discman and the battry will last MUCh longer (like 40h+). I also like the fact that you can easily hide it, so there are less chances of you getting mugged, though peole can still see the remote obviously. About that, it is really awesome and easy to work with, just fiddle aroungd with it and you'll understand how to use it in no time (oh and it's backlit).

Overall, you won't regret buying this at all.

4 out of 5 stars A better sounding cd/mp3 player.......2005-06-19

I ordered this cd player because of its low profile and light weight since I plan to use it on my frequent plane trips. The sound quality of this player, when used with the supplied earbuds, is acceptible. If a decent noise-cancelling over-ear headphone is used, such as the Bose or the Sony, then the sound is comparable to a good stereo. I noticed a faint buzz (higher than the typical 60 Hz hum) when the noise cancelling circuitery is turned on. May be there is a component in the player than picked up noise from near by electrical sources. Otherwise a very good cd player from Panasonic that is still built in Osaka, Japan.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing player.......2007-03-14

This CD player died after only 2 months. Not worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars great CD player............2007-01-30

I was very pleased with the performance of this player. For starters, the sound quality is great. Secondly, I love the hand strap that comes with it, so it won't fall when you're walking with it. What's more, it's so great to have a machine that is water resistant (I live in Seattle AKA The City of Rain). I would definitely reccomend it!

4 out of 5 stars It's GREAT.......2007-01-19

I'd give it a five, but I have to be unbiast, and count in the headphones.

I've had this player for several months now, and I still love it. One of my kids swiped it to use at the gym (until someone gave her a player), the other one keeps walking off with my headphones to use with her mp3 player and, occassionally, when I wasn't looking, she absconded with the whole thing to play her cds in her bedroom.

-It really is durable. I've only dropped it once, onto the kitchen floor, but it was fine. My daughter also dropped it at the gym and she was impressed that it didn't break the player or mess up the disc.
-I like the sound. I'm no expert, but I think it's fine, and I like the choice of eq's.
*The headphones do not block out sounds at all, which means that you hear anything and everything else over the music, unless you listen to it really loud, maybe. The lowest volume setting (#1) is still too loud,in my opinion- there is no "silent" volume level.
*The one thing that I really don't like is that the screen has no back-light. I never thought that would be a problem, but it can be if you want to play it in dark-lit environments.

-I LOVE this player.
*Those are the only negative things I can think of, and I'd still settle for those negatives to have this player. I'd choose it again if I had to choose, with a better set of h-phones, of course. I would like, someday, to upgrade to a better pair of headphones which aren't so "un-soundproof".

Untechnically, I really like the look of it as well. It's not too "un-cool", not too "feminine" or whimpy looking, and not ugly at all.

4 out of 5 stars It's a quality product .......2007-01-16

However, because of the water-prove design, it's a bit heavy and bulky than the last Panasonic CD player I had. Sound quality is very good. It's also quite easy to use. I only wish the CD player has a back-light so that in dark places it won't be this hard to see.

5 out of 5 stars It's great.......2007-01-05

I've never owned a portable CD player before but this one works very well. It never skips and sounds excellent. And it feels sturdy.

1 out of 5 stars I'd give it NO stars, if I could.......2005-03-15

Bought the "jogger" version from Sam's Club. After 1 week of PURE frustration while trying to jog, I returned it. UGH! I had to stop to fiddle with the stupid thing during CD play. It is SIMPLY SIMPLY terrible. The sound was fine, and it picked up radio, like normal, but the CD feature is only okay if you plan to remain still. HORRIBLE machine.

3 out of 5 stars A good mp3/CD player with some shortcomings.......2004-08-06

Pros

1. nice battery life, almost last twice as long as last year's mp70.

2. inexpensive for something with ID3 tagging.

3. I use it with the car kit, and the player standed the Southern California heat in the car just fine.

4. Headphone an improvement from last year's model. Volume is loud enough; I use 10 (out of 25) under most conditions.

Cons

1. No fast forwarding for mp3 songs (same issue with last year's models, mp70, mp80). Therefore, this is not an ideal player for mp3 audio book listening.

2. Slow/awkward, non responsive controls; you can forget about getting to the songs quickly. The controls looks ipod-ish, but are truly the most non responsive design I've ever seen.

3. Display has no backlit, this saves battery life, but it's a major inconvenience at darker condition.

4. The player doesn't like CD-RW disk; somtimes it takes a very long time to load when using CD-RW disk. CD-R and regular CD work just fine.

5. Awkward profile, the side with the batteries is thicker than the other sides, but this is minor gripe, overall, the player is relatively slim.

Remember to group songs into folders, otherwise you'll have an even harder time getting to the songs you want to listen.

5 out of 5 stars Great little CD player !.......2004-06-19

When I got this inexpensive player, I was expecting bad sound and even worse quality...but, I was wrong !
The power output for the headphones included with it, is clear and more than adecuate; for everyday music, I listen at 15 (minimun 0, max 25) and I don't have any problems, however for quiet classical music (Tchaikovsky)it needs to be set at 23-25.
If you plan to use it in a very noisy enviroment, get some different headphones (closed type) and a headphone's amplifier.
It is not heavy to carry around, but it does not have a belt clip.
The EQ works, but does not provide much difference, however there is some.
Now for the MP3's, it is a little confusing at the begining, the way the folders are set up, but it is not a huge problem, however when you burn your CD's, if you have it, use software with volume normalizer and set it as loud as you can without distortion, and you will enjoy your music.
Battery life, I don't know, as I use it only 3 or 4 hours a day, and I really don't keep track.
One last word, IT IS made of plastic and kind of fragile, if you are going to put it in your backpack under several books, it might no be the player for you.

This portable CD/MP3 player provides some unusual benefits along with the ability to play CDs, CDRs, CDRWs, and CDs with MP3 files. Product Description

Panasonic brings a beautiful design and a wealth of features to this portable CD player with No-Skip system. The SL-SX392C comes with a wireless remote control, an included car power adaptor and car cassette adaptor for simple integration into almost any car stereo. You can enjoy listening to CDs that you make, since this portable CD player enables playback of CD-R and CD-RW disks. Program this portable CD player to play a CD at random, in a specified order, or to repeat one song or the whole disk, letting you enjoy your favorite tunes without interruption. Extra Bass System (XBS) gives your music an added bass boost for fuller sound. The CD player can be used outdoors because of a heat-resistant body design. In order to load a CD, the top of the player fully opens, and a slide lock closes it back up once your CD is placed inside, making sure your player won't open during playback. An included pair of stereo headphones lets you enjoy your music to the fullest.

    Amazon.com Product Description

The Panasonic SL-SX392C portable CD player was made for active use, incorporating not only a wireless remote control but Panasonic's "No Skip" anti-skip system and a handy car kit that lets you power the device from your vehicle's cigarette lighter and listen through your cassette deck using a cassette-shaped audio adapter.

"No Skip" construction was designed with rubber bushings to absorb the shock, while a thin and light anti-skip mechanism and anti-skip digital servo system add to the defense. It also boasts a digital-servo recovery system that can detect even a fractional difference in the CD's tracking and quickly recovers before it has a chance to "derail."

The system is bolstered by an improved set of error correction chips together with a 48-second backup memory buffer. When a vertical shock (along the axis of the disc) causes a tracking error, the system plays back music from the memory buffer until correct tracking resumes.

Since the SL-SX392C enables playback of CD-R and CD-RW discs, you can enjoy listening to CDs that you make in addition to conventional audio CDs. This unit also features programmable playback (up to 24 tracks, in your chosen sequence), random play, repeat play (either one song or an entire disc), as well as S-XBS bass boost and Train mode (which cuts high frequencies for less externally audible or less fatiguing sound). The player includes a "pop-up" disc eject mechanism for easy disc removal.

The CD player uses two AA batteries (not included), which last up to 32 hours. You can also power the unit with an optional 4.5V AC/DC adapter, which lets you plug your portable CD player into an outlet. In order to let you load a CD more easily, the top of the player fully opens, and a slide lock closes it back up once your CD is placed inside, making sure your player won't open during playback.

With a heat-resistant polycarbonate body, the SL-SX392C can be used in most outdoor settings without worry of damage. However, the unit should not be exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods.

    What's in the Box
CD player, stereo headphones, wireless remote control, remote battery, hook-and-loop fastener for remote, car power adapter, car cassette audio adapter, and a user's manual.

5 out of 5 stars Strong CD Player .......2006-01-12

I bought this cd player (with car kit included) about 3-4 years ago at Target, and I still love it. Though I usually use my new iPod now, this cd player's still gonna be with me for quite awhile longer. I mainly use this player now when I want to play CD-RWs in my car (car refuses to play CD-RWs). I've never had a problem with this item breaking or anything (and I can say that I used this player often before I got an mp3 player for the first time a couple weeks ago), and I can't recall any major problems with skipping in the car or when I'm walking with it either. Cool thing about this player is that it remembers what track I left off, so when I stop it, press play again, it starts off from the track I left off with. Plus the car adapter works with my iPod, so I don't have to buy one for the iPod.

1 out of 5 stars gismo lovers beware.......2004-03-23

i was forced to get a new cd player when my 2.5 year old discman finally pooped out on me right before i was leaving for london. a quick stop at frys on the way to the airport left me with a decision between this one and the [other] of the same price. being easily impressed with gadgets (i.e. a wireless remote) i went with this one.
every time i use it, i regret that choice. as soon as a disc is put in and the door closed, you can hear a ridiculous hiss that shouldn't be in any kind of audio equipment. granted, i use my [other player] which provide much better listening than the stock ones they give you, but upon testing them, i found that you could hear the hiss even with the stock headphones in most quiet situations.
i have now owned this player for a year, and about two month ago, the cd began spinning crooked, causing it to skip massively about 5-6 tracks in to any cd. this is due to a cheap little mechanism designed to hold the cd in with push-button release that wore out without expansive abuse.
among other things wrong were it's lack of a line out jack, two completely useless eq settings, and buttons that are all the same shape making it impossible to navigate in the dark/your pocket.
    this thing is [worthless].
but beyond that, the skip protection is actually fairly nice when the cd is spinning flat, and the battery life was good enough that i barely bothered to plug it into the wall when listening using it at home plugged into a stereo.

    but seriously.
don't buy this thing unless you are part deaf and have night vision.

    Amazon.com Product Description

Join the MP3 revolution without abandoning your CD collection with the stylish and affordable Panasonic SL-SX450 personal CD player. Outfitted with a number of basic features and a few more advanced functions, the device is an ideal alternative to expensive Flash memory MP3 players, as it lets listeners enjoy downloaded MP3 files when burned onto a CD-R/RW disc. Listeners can employ such playback features as 20-track random-access programming; repeat and random play; and skip/search within both individual tracks and MP3 albums. The device also includes a hold switch that locks the current settings so that users don't accidentally switch tracks while jogging or turn on the unit while traveling. Active listeners will welcome the anti-skip technology, which includes a 45-second CD memory reserve to help ensure a skip-free listening experience whether you're sitting on the sofa or jogging on the sidewalk. The memory reserve is even more generous (100 seconds) when listening to MP3s.

The CD player delivers on the audio front as well thanks to the multiple equalizer settings, which include a live setting that simulates the sound from a live concert hall and two S-XBS settings. The first S-XBS option boosts the bass to create a deeper, more powerful audio effect, while the second S-XBS enhances the overall sound (including the bass). Adding to the CD player's value is Panasonic's PowerLast high-efficiency power system, which combines an efficient motor with low-load circuitry to create a playback time of 50 hours for CDs and 85 hours for MP3s on just two AA alkaline batteries. The device also includes a low battery indicator and carries a one-year warranty against defects.

5 out of 5 stars Does what its suppossed to do.......2007-01-09

This player has been bouncing around in our minivan for over a year now. Plays music skip-free. I've had three similar CD players now; they've all worked pretty well. But this one slightly outperforms the others and had a great price.

5 out of 5 stars am i even supposed to take this seriously???.......2006-05-29

While I was initially attracted to this product for the sterling glamour of its silvery surface, this soon tarnished once I began operating its more than yielding button interface. Yes, it is very generous in how it allows you to press and poke it to command a number of operations; but it is almost too generous, and with each push of a button it sinks into disrepute, servility and debasement. I once esteemed its silvery resplendence. This product now impresses me as nothing more than painted chattel to be abused by paupers and mendicants, to daub with their oily fingers.

I can have no more of this disreputable product.

4 out of 5 stars Decent CD player.......2006-04-01

The main thing which prevents this player from qualifying as a 5-star item is the accessibility of the buttons on the front of the player. They are a little TOO accessible...many times while listening to CD's in bed at night, I have accidentally brushed a button & ended up having to turn on a light & try to find my way back to where I was.

Of course, you can slide the button which prevents any changes to settings on the player, but this is inconvenient too if you want to adjust the volume, for instance, or hear a track a second time.

Otherwise, battery use, listening quality, etc. have all been excellent, especially for the price. I did purchase different ear phones, but then I almost never use the phones that come with CD players because they won't stay on my ears.

4 out of 5 stars Literate and genteel.......2005-11-17

Seeing that the Sony D-EJ001 CD Walkman was a couple of bucks cheaper than this one and that Amazon was advertising it at a greatly "reduced" price (misleading), I selected it over this Panasonic competitor. Big mistake. I was almost relieved when it failed to read discs because then I had an excuse to exchange it for the Panasonic SL-SX450. The Sony model had tiny, practically inaccessible, plastic buttons on the underside, an all but unusable "lock" button, and a tiny read-out window that wasn't visible from the top.

This Panasonic model, like the Sony, is also manufactured in China and is a real "lightweight" (both of the previous generations of players were made in Japan). But it's unfailing in reading my disks, does so with reassuring clarity, and accommodates all my needs. The controls are of a generous, finger-friendly size and the read-out window is large and clearly visible when viewed from above the machine. The pause control is more practical than the Sony's, and I love the feature that allows you to resume play of a disc where you left off providing the cover hasn't been opened. Finally, the extra life you'll get from two AA alkalines is a significant technological advance. This machine just keeps going!

The only other consideration might be the headphones. The Sony's ear buds with attached clips are cosmetically "cool" but tinny-sounding compared to the Panasonic's. Regardless, even a non-horticulturalist could tell you that buds are no good without a plant.

[Since writing the above, I see that the item, introduced barely six months ago, has been removed by Amazon and perhaps by the manufacturer. Unfortunate, since I had planned to purchase another as a gift and have found no comparable unit at a comparable price. After two months' use, the only problem I've noticed with the player is the flimsy door to the battery compartment--sometimes requiring use of a screwdriver or similar pointed device to open (though rarely necessary due to the minimal drain on the batteries) and extra care in closing (unless it's completely "snapped" shut, the machine won't read discs). With any luck, Panasonic will address this flaw and reissue the product.]
