JVC's book-thin XV-N310SL progressive-scan DVD player is a high-value player equipped to spin both your DVDs and your CDs, including recordable CD, video-mode DVD-R and DVD-RW, VCD (video CD), SVCD, MP3 CD, JPEG CD, and even discs bearing MPEG-4 (Simple Profile) video. It also features conveniences like express play start (which starts a single-layer DVD movie in just 4 seconds), disc memory resume for up to 30 discs (which lets you pick up exactly where you left off the last time you were viewing); quick playback with sound at 1.5x speed, and 1-touch instant replay.The player includes JVC's Direct Digital Progressive-Scan output using switchable (480p/480i) component-video connectors. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.
On the audio side, the XV-N310SL offers Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround passthrough with coaxial digital audio output for easy hookup with a compatible audio/video receiver. The XV-N310SL makes use of high-bit-rate and high-sampling-rate digital-to-analog conversion for both video and audio--10-bit/54 MHz video conversion and 24-bit/192 kHz audio conversion.
The model's 10-bit, 54 MHz video sampling frequency ensures detailed images and clear, pure colors for DVD movies. And, with seven parameters to adjust, the unit's Video Fine Processor (VFP) provides exceptional versatility in fine-tuning images to personal preferences. The player gives you a coaxial digital-audio output for routing Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1-channel surround signals to a compatible audio/video receiver.
The XV-N310SL offers component-video, S-video, and composite-video outputs, a coaxial digital audio output for PCM, Dolby Digital, and DTS passthrough. Other conveniences include AV CompuLink (which optimizes performance when using the player in conjunction with other JVC equipment) and 3-step picture zoom.

They aren't kidding. In fact, they probably aren't being very truthful about this, because I've tried this DVD player on 5 different HDTV sets from different companies including Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, and my RCA - all produced the same results, with a poor quality picture rife with heavy compression, artifacting, and motion blurs. Switching over from 480p to 480i with the component inputs makes a minimal difference in terms of the artifacting, but the picture becomes so grainy that it makes watching DVDs impossible. The quality is worse than cable. I've read through the manual about 10 times, I've fidgeted with every menu and setting on the DVD player and the TV, but was unable to get a decent picture.
I just tried a Sony DVD player which doesn't even have progressive scan, and using just s-video inputs, the picture quality is vastly superior.
