5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Album Description

Undercurrents of thundering tribal drums and primal rhythms awaken the wisdom of the ancients while haunting Native flute and keyboard melodies conjure the elements of the Earth in this greatly anticipated collaboration between best-selling Sequoia Records artist Steve Gordon (Sacred Earth Drums) and acclaimed Spotted Peccary Music artist Deborah Martin (Under the Moon). Rattles and shakers, ocarinas, acoustic guitars, textural electric guitars, hand drums, and sculpted electronic soundspaces are all combined to transport the listener to a world of delicate beauty and raw power.

5 out of 5 stars Calming and comforting.......2002-04-18

I enjoy New Age genre and Native American music and this collection was recommended to me by a 19 year old friend who shares the interest. Although my husband complains that it's a little "repetitious," I find Ancient Power very relaxing. It speaks for a more spiritual part of self than I can usually express in words. I have recently suffered the loss of a close personal friend, and this collection has allowed me to come to terms with it without the need to intellectualize. Calming and comforting.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritually rich and imaginative musical flows.......1999-01-24

The liner notes accompanying this CD tell you about the instruments used -- Taos Drums, Shakers, Turtle Rattles, Keyboards, Rainstick and so on. And apparently both the artists (Deborah Martin/Under the Moon and Steve Gordon/Sacred Earth Drums) have achieved some recognition independently.

Their combined effort here is seamless. If you can imagine sitting out West in the high desert, perhaps a thousand years ago, and if you could hear the sounds of the spirits of the people and the elements of sun, wind and fire that were the basis of their spiritual life, this is what you'd hear.

The songs flow melodically with rhythm and authenticity. Very relaxing to listen to. Buy a new candle, cut the lights down and feel the Ancient Power.

Based on Somerset Maugham's middling novel Theater, Annette Bening stars as the title character, an aging star of the London stage whose life and the melodramas she performs have come to mirror each other. Composer Mychael Danna sets those conflicts to a score that emphasizes theatrical surfaces and rigid role-playing, utilizing a finely honed classical pastiche approach with parallels to his previous period-evoking work on Vanity Fair. His cues here are rooted in the light romantic chamber music of the 19th century, though they frequently bristle with a more contemporary energy and aplomb. Offering counterpoint to Danna's dignified, oft-precious classical confections and mining the story's more sensual human dimensions are pop chestnuts from the era (The Andrews Sisters' saucy "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon" and Mills Brothers' jaunty "Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries"), as well as fine contemporary takes of "They Didn't Believe Me" and Noel Coward's "Mad About the Boy" by Denzel Sinclair and Alison Jicar's elegant read of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful melody but lacks variety.......2005-04-11

Being Julia OST has a beautiful main melody which occurs over and over again throughout the tracks. I especially like "Curtain Up" and "Quite Alone". However, Being Julia OST doesn't have other strong melody to show along side with the main melody which seems a little too simple for a complete album. The movie is great too. Annette Bening's performance is outstanding.

      5 out of 5 stars Rare Grooves.......2004-10-02

First of all, this CD is very hard to find now because it's out of print for long even though it's rather popular among collectors like me. You should buy it if you are a real disco music fan and able to find somewhere, I think. Give Your Body Up series includes many rare disco tunes, moreover, in the extended versions in most cases. But this Vol.1 is most recommendable. I like Why Leaves Us Alone and Bad For Me, both of which are exciting up-tempo disco gems and really really hard to find on any CD. The disco version of Free Man is also good.

5 out of 5 stars CLUB CLASSIC & HOUSE FOUNDATION REVIEW.......2002-09-15

THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST SERIES TO DATE, ALL THREE VOLUMES HAS CLASSICS THAT HAVEN'T BEEN HEARD IN YEARS. I HAVE ALL THREE AND I HOPE THEY COME OUT WITH 4,5, AND 6.

5 out of 5 stars HEY, NOW THIS IS WHAT I'M TALKIN' ABOUT!!!.......2002-05-25

Great collection of dance-cuts. I have volume 1-3, and I'm glad I decided to buy them. With the exception of a couple of songs, all the jams are full-length extended versions. This is what I've been asking for all along. The average person from that era don't want alot of three-minute cuts from back in the day. Hey, we want the whole un-cut versions and this series delivers.

Plus, while listening to it, I came across a few long-loved jams that I haven't heard in years (decades, even). For instance, as soon as I heard the song "BRA" by CYMANDE, man, I almost cried. And then there's the vocal-version of the jam, "ALWAYS THERE" by SIDE EFFECT. Man, I was looking for these cuts; in CD-format, for a long time.

Hey, if your on a serious quest for great un-cut dance-jams from back in the day; you definitely can't go wrong with "GIVE YOUR BODY UP", it's one of the best series.

5 out of 5 stars Superb performances in both languages. Buy it twice!.......2005-10-04

`Berlin Cabaret Songs' by Ute Lemper are issued as part of London recording company's `Entartete Musik' series or music suppressed by the Third Reich. One of the very best things about this issue is the fact that Ms. Lemper and London have issued the album in two versions. One is in the original German and one is sung entirely in English.

For starters, I strongly suggest you listen to both, but if you simply have no interest in listening to the German version, I will reassure you that the English performance is musically virtually identical to the German. The instrumentals almost sound as if they were done Kareoke style, with Ms. Lemper's English or German mixed in afterwards. I'm almost certain this was not actually done, as the translations probably changed a few things here and there about the meter of the lyrics, but I could find nothing in the instrumental or vocal performances to prefer in one over the other, except for the genuine experience of hearing it the same way as the cabaret audiences in Berlin would hear it.

Ms. Lemper's English interpretations, as they are in all her earlier albums, is impecible. It also seems to be about as accent free as you can imagine. Not only is it free of German inflections, it is free of a British accent as well, so it should sound great to American ears.

The first thing which strikes me about the lyrics of these songs is that to my ear, there is practically nothing which is critical or even satiric of a specific government. There is not even much which is sexually explicit, let alone lewd. Some pieces from Kurt Weill in `Mahagonny' may be more objectionable than most songs in this album. One thing that tells us is exactically how extremely conservative the Nazis were about any art whatsoever. The most strident politically oriented song is in favor of women's rights and makes no mention of the Nazi government or any other political party for that matter.

The only weakness of the album may be that virtually all this material is unfamiliar to the average listener, so we don't have the pleasure of seeing how Ms. Lemper does a new version of, for example, `Bilbao Song' or Jacques Brel's `Amsterdam'. But then, I relish any chance whatsoever to hear Ms. Lemper sing. She is still fresh and free of the kind of syrupy sweetness we get from, for example, Barbra Streisand, these days from her `Guilty Pleasures' album.

5 out of 5 stars Ute, Ute, what would we do without you (and these songs)?.......2000-09-02

This album is absolutely to DIE for! These songs, as everyone knows, are still very effective today, so it is schocking to think that they were first written in the 1920s and `30s. But when you are supressed (like the Germans were during this time) things come out. The rousing anthems on this album run the gamut from gay pride ("The Lavender Song") to women's rights ("Chuck Out the Men!") and everything in between. There are also wistful, beautiful (yet unsentimental) numbers like "I Don't Know Who I Belong To" and "A Little Yearning," though there is still enough room for sentimental propaganda, like in the very moving "Munchhausen." Ute's duet with herself, "When the Special Girlfriend," a lesbian pride song, is a hoot! Then there are the stinging, biting social commentary songs, like "It's All a Swindle" and "The Smart Set," which is one of the best satirical songs I've ever heard. The funniest song on the album is, without a dought, "Maskulinum-Femininum," which cracks me up every time. Getting these classic songs in English is a real treat, as it helps them speak to a larger (maybe) audience. Thank you, thank you, thank you Ms. Lemper, for this excellent album! The world is a better place because of it!

5 out of 5 stars These songs have not lost their pertinence or their punch........2000-07-30

Ute Lemper, perhaps the pre-eminent European cabaret singer of our day, does a brilliant job putting across these songs. While songs such as "I Am a Vamp" come across as snazzy, funny period pieces, others--"It's All a Swindle," "Chuck Out the Men," "The Lavender Song," and "Munchhausen"--have lyrics which are just as pertinent and biting in Y2K America as they were in 1930 Berlin. (That doesn't speak well for today's society, needless to say.) These songs--and Lemper's performances of them--are like brilliant mirrors held up to reveal the hypocrisy of the Weimar Republic. If you can bear the shock of recognizing yourself in them, this CD is for you.

      5 out of 5 stars I love this cd!.......1999-02-01

I bought this cd in german, and appreciated it, but wasn't in love. Then my girlfriend went to see a production of Cabaret, loved IT, and i found more enjoyment in the german edition. The next day, I found this english version, and immediately fell in love with the songs. A wide range of songs (feminism, gay rights, anti hitlerism, and songs of love) pepper the subject matter. THe tone of the writing is racy of fun, tinged with seriousness and a bit of sadness. Ute's voice is fantastic throughout, she carries each song through thoroughly.

Power-pop & garage-punk get hitched! Led by singer/guitarist/songwriter Evan Foster & keyboardist Nick C. Seattle band the Boss Martians release their fifth album, The Set-Up. Musick Recordings. 2003.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Play it LOUD!.......2006-02-09

I first saw Boss Martians live at a festival 2-3 years ago, and they totally blew the other bands away! Great power/pop/punk attitude. Think Cheap Trick on steroids with some Elvis Costello/Replacements/Paybacks in the mix. Great songwriting and Evan Foster is a SHREDDER on guitar. Top to Bottom this is slightly more solid than their previous effort, "Making the Rounds", but I'd give Making the Rounds a slight nod as the best songs are stronger. All in all a GREAT band that's flying just slightly under the radar thought probably not for long. I hear they're in the studio putting together a new album now (Feb 06).

3 out of 5 stars LOUD, man-- LOUD!!!.......2004-03-03

Comparisons with Cheap Trick are very apt; I doubt I've heard a previous band THIS loud who were also so REFINED-- and MELODIC. So what's Rick Nielsen done good in the last 15 years??? Move over-- Evan Foster's here now!!

This is-- depending on your POV-- either the 8th (or 9th) Boss Martians album, OR the 3rd Mystery Action album (certainly the near-complete shift in style from hot-rod-&-surf to power pop started on HERE'S TO ANOTHER YEAR). The tone, and the VOLUME, on display here is so consistent (not quite monotonous) that this is taking a bit to digest and grow on me. However, there's ALREADY a few songs that are becoming fast favorites for me-- among them "I Wanna be Your Addiction", "Walk Away" and "I Am Your Radio" (picked as "Coolest song of the year 2003" by the listeners of Little Steven's nationally syndicated radio show The Underground Garage). It's a sure sign of how screwed up the music biz is when stuff THIS good isn't ALLOWED to be played on most stations!!!

With the variety of styles the BM have hit over the last decade, I woudn't mind seeing another shift on Evan's next project. In the meantime, check out the Link Wray tribute, GUITAR ACE, on which he contributes 3 covers of wildly varying styles, including an astonishing version of "Fire And Brimstone", which I like even MORE than anything here! (Meanwhile, my favorite BM album, LOCKDOWN PARTY, is still only available as an import LP from Italy. I've already had to make my own CD copy, fans should nag his label to do an official version!)

5 out of 5 stars Best "Unknown" Band I've Found.......2004-03-02

Words cannot describe how fantastic this CD is. I first heard these guys at 2 in the morning on our local classic rock station, and I've been hooked ever since. People say the Strokes and White Stripes are 'saving rock and roll', and while that may be true (I'm a fan of them as well), the Boss Martians just have such a pure sound that's impossible to dislike. If you are even the most casual fan of the classic rock sound, you have to get this album. I think the other review says it best, these songs WILL cheer you up on a rainy day.

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Album.......2004-01-30

The Boss Martians have been great at everything they've done. From "surf" to "garage" to just plain rock, these guys know how it's done. Great hooks, great songs, great band. Look for these guys to go FAR very soon. I've seen these guys live tons of times and trust me...THEY ARE ROCK AND ROLL!

      5 out of 5 stars unbelievable---check these guys out.......2003-12-03

OK, if you're reading this, you must have some idea of what the Martians sound like, sort of surf rock meets Cheap Trick. I'm here to tell you that they sound even better than that. They sound like the feeling you get when you're about to ask that cute girl across the room for her phone number. They sound like fireworks in July. They sound like a crescent moon hanging over a lagoon in Venice on a warm Saturday night. They're one of the best damn live bands I've ever seen.

The CD is a blueprint---these guys pump a ton of life and muscle into each show they play, especially "Walk Away" and "I Am Your Radio". What stands out to me is the Martians' increasing lyric accomplishment; songs like "Angela" and "Vows" are packed with enough clever turns and internal rhymes that they could pass as Sondheim songs.

So take a chance and get happy with the Martians. Because that's what will happen, you'll pop this in your car in the morning to get going before work, you'll pop it in on the way home to be cheered up after a bad day. And catch them live too!

i personaly don't own this box set. however, i do have the first two volumes of the tighten up series. I gotta say probably some best collections of reggae to ever come out. There are alot of songs in this box set from the frist two volumes..."blood n fire"-niney the observer "barb wire"-norma dean "fatti fattie"-derrick morgan....plus lots lost more.I highly reccomend this to any fan of mid to late 60's ska and reggae truly great stuff

4 out of 5 stars One of the best of the series.......2002-04-20

I own the Trojan "Rocksteady" Box Set which I personally consider a bit lackluster. I also have the "Club Reggae" Box Set which I give a hearty thumbs up to. But the "Tighten Up" Box Set is my favorite so far. You dig Reggae from the late 60's early 70's? "Tighten Up" fits the bill nicely. My only wish would be that some more detailed liner notes were included. Plus the original album cover art for the series was incredible but unfortunately not found with this re-issue package. But the most important ingredients are, of course, good music at a reasonable price, and with "Tighten Up" you get both.

2002 marks my tenth year of being a dedicated "Jamaican Sound" fanatic. In all those years I have been lucky enough to find some of the best music of the genre but this boxed set has knocked the wind from me. I've owned it for only a week and have listened to every track on every disc at least twice a day. I could extol the virtues of this set 'til I went blue in the face but even so I couldn't begin to describe how fantastic these tracks are. If you are a fan of the genre or have never heard a single Maytals cut in your life you have a real treat in store for you.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Vintage Reggae.......2001-02-16

This three set is one of my favorite Reggae CD's. It has a lot of classic reggae tunes from the 60's and 70's and shows the roots of reggae beyond the masters - Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. A welcome addition to any reggae collection.
