Loosely based on the popular Disney theme park audio-animatronic ride, one might expect a modicum of good-natured "Yo-ho-ho-ing"--or maybe a little rousing Korngold/Errol Flynn/Captain Blood orchestral romanticism--here. Instead composer Klaus Badelt initially entices us with some sparing Celtic folk charm, then unleashes a furious broadside of symphonic and choral thunder to rival his ominous score for K-19. The composer's fellow German mentor is an obvious influence throughout (the album is credited with a wink as "Score overproduced by Hans 'Long John' Zimmer") but Badelt brings his own muscular instincts to bear throughout. Perhaps shrewdly realizing that genre cliches are nothing if not for reinventing, Badelt delivers his rhythmically nervous Eurocentric sensibilities--sort of Holst duels Shostakovich on the Spanish Main--with the subtlety of a scorching cannonball. It's seasoned with a little romantic respite in the final act, if a bit gingerly, and could no doubt profit by some of Korngold's sparkling melodic verve. But it's a loud, unabashed Summer Blockbuster score at heart; alert the neighbors. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

"...Cuz I'm A Woman And I Can Do That" (Rating: 9 out of 10- -4.5 stars).......2007-06-13
Hearing most of her albums, I have to say this one might be her best. She really has a lot to say, especially when she speaks about women, and how they are living in society. Whether if it is living with a bad boyfriend, or living and doing drugs, or dealing with female drama, she covers it all on this album. One great track that I liked was "You Should Have Listened" where she covers all of those topics. On the song "Hoes" she defends the female gender being called that name and features a Deadly Threat. "A Few Good Men" is another excellent track about men who don't sell drugs.
Production here is mostly by Sir Jinx and DJ Pooh (the Lench Mob's bread butter when it came to their production), with a some by DJ Muggs (from Cypress Hill), Down Low Productions, Bobcat, and Rashad. A lot of it has that early 90's sound with isn't bad at all. "So Funky" is a nice funky type beat, that reminds me of something I would hear on Del's I Wish My Brother George Was Here.
Overall, Black Pearl is a real nice album from Yo Yo. I beleve this album got her the nickname "Black Pearl" as well. Her skills on here are excellent here as well as her subject matter. This album really has that early 90's sound to it, back when rap was about sending messages to it's listeners to better their lives, and thats what she does on here. Black Pearl is mostly about uplifting African-American females who are not living the way that they are supposed to, and Yo Yo backs it with some skills. I would be suprised if anyone remembers her albums and still spin them every once in a while. I recommend that you check this album, espeically if you're a fan of early Ice Cube/Lench Mob or if you're a female and are looking for some positive lyrics. This is a toss up with her next album You Better Ask Somebody as being her best album. Peace!!

Engaging, lyrical performances.......2006-11-10
Let me back up a bit and discuss this CD itself. You have to realize that this is vintage material from the late 1920s and the 1930s. The producers had a dilemma. They could try to suppress all of the hiss and surface noise of the 78 rpm records. But, in the process you would also lose the high notes of the soprano. Wisely, they chose to leave the high frequencies alone. If you want to suppress them, virtually all playback systems have a "treble" control, if not a full equalizer, so this is no disadvantage. Luckily, there is no detectable wow and flutter from warped disks.
About Bori's singing. It's musical, and tastefully done. It's not overblown with excessive vocal theatrics, or sentimentality as some of the early 1900s singers were prone to. She is an excellent musician. Yet, there is a detectable accent. In Hoffman's Barcarolle, which is sung in English, you've got to listen carefully to make out the words. But then, Lawrence Tibbett also is sometimes hard to make out. It may be their operatic technique of the time as well as the limited frequency response of the recording system. Tibbett seems to be a bass or baritone, and in combination with a soprano, a wide frequency response is needed.
Ironically, even though Bori was born in Spain, when I asked my Spanish speaking friends about the lyrics of "La Violetera", they noted that the Spanish was pronounced with a heavy accent also. Perhaps people knowledgable in Italian can tell us about her Italian pronounciation.
A word about the Italian opera snippets. I'm a nut about Puccini, especially Madame Butterfly. Un bel di is so critical to this opera, that it has to be done right. I'm stuck on Renata Tebaldi's rendition, which to my mind is the gold standard. Bori has a different view, which may take some getting used to. The notes do say that she rarely performed Butterfly in the USA, and so perhaps she was aware of her own problems with this aria. Tebaldi brings out the anguish and makes you cry. Bori seems a little more perfunctory.
Overall, this is quite a fun, musical CD with material that is not often heard today. I really enjoy this one.
