Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Well worth the price.......2006-04-13

I love this CD. No, despite its name it is not the "ultimate" collection, as scarcely could be expected from a single CD. It is heavy on Mikado, as others have stated. It leaves out things I would have included and includes things I would have left out. But the performances are wonderful, traditional and all you expect from G&S. Considering the low price, it is well worth including in your G&S collection ... as PART of your collection. After the disappointment of the godawful Opera World video series (Don't buy it!) this CD is a joy and a relief.

Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23

It seems that a collection of Gilbert & Sullivan music that has the name "The Ultimate Collection" in its title would boast a wide range of music, but I found the selection disappointing. Half of the tracks are songs from The Mikado, and the other half is divided between five... yes, FIVE other operettas. This means that the representation from each operetta is awfully scant. I would have liked to see less Mikado and more of everything else, and perhaps some highlights from the more obscure operettas (Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, namely).

In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.

Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.

Where's the chicks?!?!.......2003-05-15

It wouldn't be G&S if not for the ladies - so where are they? How could they leave out Mabel's aria - or Josephine's!? The only female aria included on this disc comes from Mikado, which is the least exciting (if G&S could be un-exciting) of the three! Everything else on the recording is great, but I am still quite disappointed.

Not quite the ultimate...........2002-03-25

This is a great collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have songs from all the works of G&S. Most notably, there is nothing from the "Yeoman of the Guard". I still reccommed it however as John Reed is wonderful!!

Great Music - Questionable Selection.......2002-02-05

It's an ongoing challenge to find a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan that combines premium musicality and great theatrical performance. This recording is a true gem on both fronts. My only complaint is that for a "Best of" collection, this compilation is Mikado-heavy and scarcely touches on highlights from other masterpieces, particularly The Pirates of Penzance. This would be my favorite G&S CD of all time, of only it included tracks like "When the Foeman Bares his Steel," "Poor Wand'ring One," and "Dry the Glist'ning Tear," but then again, I guess there's no real consensus as to which are Gilbert and Sullivan's best works, and there are too many to fit on one CD.

I come from a classical music background and wish to congratulate the producers of this CD. For the first time ever, to my knowledge, here is a CD that's incredibly straightforward and extremely simple - perfect material for babies and young children. By no means a classical music masterpiece but the entire easiness and simplicity is perfect to ease any child into a positive state of mind as it does with my baby and toddler. For the Bambino's, I say this is a cut above Mozart. ( Give 4 stars)

Majors for Minors- classical music nursery rhymes.......2002-04-25

...My wife and I have used the Majors for Minors series for the last three years, we have two small children and can only praise the positive results our children have had from these CD'S.

I can only assume that G Spanos is a music academic and authority on classical music, however from what I know of the research that went into this series the mucis is purely a classical interpretation and the success is actually created by sound frequencies and specfic patterns which the producers have used.

The fact that the product uses digital instruments as opposed to authentic instruments from what I understand has no bearing on how this product works.

I admit as a lover of classical music myself that there is far supeior available, however as a product designed to calm and assist with active and passive situations during a childs daily life - there is nothing better in the market (from what we know of) and we have used many other products designed for this purpose wthout success!

My knowldege of Majors for Minors workings is probably better than most average person, due to the fact that when I was in the UK on business, I read an article in a London newspaper which gave detail on how the produsers of this product went about their research and they admitted that their compilations such as the nursery rhymes and the lullabies would sound rather monotonous to the average adult, however the effect on children under three is excellent.

We challenge G Spanos or any parent with young children to use this product and not experience the incredible benefits to their children as my wife and I have found. In fact we would go as far as saying that the principles of this product should try and do alot more to make Majors for Minors more known to the rest of the world.

Classical Music Nursery Rhymes.......2002-04-19

I bought this CD for my 5th child, who has special needs when he was 5yrs old. I had struggled with 5yrs of disturbed nights; frequently up for 2hr stretches. I would play it in the sitting room whilst cuddling/rocking my son. I would concentrate my mind on the music, rocking patting, walking in time with the beat, until he slept. Because my son frequently needs attention during the night he sleeps in our room, and for the last year or so whenever he wakes at night I play this music softly, it does not disturb my husband and it gives me a focus on which to concentrate instead of mulling over the day ahead or worrying about matters. It has been our nightly friend and companion. Please send us your comments about Majors for Minors.

AVOID THIS CD.......2002-03-11

DO NOT BUY THIS CD !! This cd purports to be Classical Music Nursery Rhymes. It is nursery rhyme melodies, but completely homogenized pablum. It is not classical, it is synthesizers - the worst kind of muzak versions, with the melodies practically hidden away in the synthesized "new age" (in the worst sense of the word) background/easy listening, mellow accompaniments. It might be ok for putting kids to sleep, but I can think of much better music to do that, that is real music. If you are looking for real versions of nursery rhyme melodies, this is NOT the cd to buy.

The Innocence of the 60's lives.......1998-08-29

For any one who remembers seeing this film with its vibrant, garrish colour and innocent aproach to sex, this album will be a "trip" back. For those who were not around for the sixties (or who cannot remeber), this will give you an idea of the fun before the storm.

Arab Strap make folk music. Not the touchy-feely kind. The real kind--music made by folks. These Falkirk, Scotland, deadbeats have stripped their music down to its barest bones, crisscrossing spoken word and music to reflect the bleakness of the refinery town they hail from. A strumming guitar drifts out of one speaker while dark, disaffected poetry about sad, drunken nights and lost chances with lost girls issues from the other. Starkly honest, the lyrics slowly burn like cigarettes left on a mattress as they describe murky sexual encounters and the grim face-offs that follow. It's downer music, but it's so elegantly conceived that it engages a wider band of thought than simply sadness. The album's centerpiece is the trip-hoppy "The Clearing," a slow, sexy lament with piano and cello contributions from Chris Geddes and Isobel Campbell from Belle & Sebastian. "And now the things that used to turn me off, I find endearing / And they laugh behind the trees and she lays naked in the clearing." This is what life sounds like. --Lois Maffeo

FOrget it.......2007-01-06

Sorry to bring everyone down, but inspite of all these great reviews, this album is a Dud. Notice the capital D. It sounds to me like some guy in his living room with a multi track and a drum machine. And there is nothing on the insert to suggest that there are other people in the band. Maybe he found some like-minded friends later on to play music with. There were a couple of tracks with a real drum kit and an occassional guest cellist that wasn't bad, but it doesn't save this album. I could give him the benefit of the doubt and try another album, but probably not.

The Dark Side of Love.......2001-06-24

One night stands, girls that decieve, ale, clubs, cigarettes and ecstasy; welcome to the world of Arab Strap. A band the tells all(Well mostly the sad parts), not leaving out any little detail. The lead singer mumbles on the mic as if his woken up after a long night before and with a deadly hangover and the band plays on. With lyrics like "I lick her ..., as it tightens its grip." and "Talked with your ex and we agreed,thought of your sister helped us wank. ", it's not hard but to laugh at first but these guys aren't just trying to shock people's parents for a few bucks. Arab Strap live this lifestyle and put it on record, making the music seem more real. All the songs go in a singer-tells-a-story-rather-than-sing formula but the music is differnt. At the core of Arab Strap's music, is modern folk(Belle & Sebastian, etc...) with sprinkles of electronic keyboards, hip hop drums, and industrial thrashes. Arab Strap combine old with new, making a fresh sound. If you don't dig the lyrics, you can atleast just focus on the music. Stand out songs include ; "I Work In A Saloon", "The First Big Weekend"(Possibly the best Arab Strap song), "Blood", and "The Smell Of Outdoor Cooking." "The Week Never Ends Round Here" plays like an Irvine Welsh novel(Arab Strap should've done the whole soundtrack to "The Acid House") talking about youth who waste their days on ale, one night stands, and being lazy all day. If this is what you want, no one does it better than Arab Strap. They've wone me over.

Excellent, but try it first........2001-03-20

I don't know if this albumn is for everyone, but I loved it. Some of the songs such as Deeper, Phone me tonight, and The First Big Weekend of the Summer, go down in my list of all time favorite tracks.

I would certainly recommend listening to this albumn on a good stereo - a lot of the lyrics sound muffled on bad headphones, making the heavy accents harder to understand. The lyrics are worth it though - Pessemistic, world-weary, but honest and very personal.

This albumn is more varied than some of their later stuff, and one or two tracks are just plain painful to listen to (whistling?) - You certainly can't call this albumn over-produced. This adds to the appeal, though, reflecting the lack of pretention in the music.

In my opinion, this is Arab Strap's best albumn. Buy it, love it, then buy all the ones that follow. You won't regret it.

not as good as i thought it'd be.......2001-03-07

i bought philophobia first and i think this album, though it's their debut, is not as good. it's too varied, it's not as consistent as philophobia. of course, you might like it that way. i don't, and i wish someone'd told me that this is the case. of course there are gems on this album, and it's worth buying if you like them, but i'd buy it used. philophobia is much more involving, and the music is better. the middle of this album starts getting strange, sounds as if some kids were just messing around with a tape recorder. which is fine, but just not what i was expecting. and i don't think 'the first big weekend' is such a great song - i don't like the techno type stuff very much at all. oh well. this album lacks the depth of philophobia, the honesty and shamelessness that makes that album so great and that makes me love arab strap so much. about half of this album is good in that way. the rest is filler. eh.

beautifully simple and hideously depressing.......2000-08-08

if you are the kind of person who will listen to their friend sob in a drunken stupor about how miserable they are, then you will love this album, even though it could drive somebody over the edge from depression into self-destruction (which is usually where the lead singer sounds like he is). the lyrics are amazing and simple; you can actually feel the sadness in his voice as it moves between a moan and a whimper and it is just beautiful, especially when complimented by the quirky instrumental back-up. although i make this sound like the most depressing album you will ever buy, it is a good bit more upbeat than their other albums and is more accesible for the average listener. buy this album first and then check out the others; if you really pay attention to arab strap, you will be amazed every time you hear the album.
