For those who want the most remembered passages of classical music's best-loved works, here's a package for you. On this bargain priced double-CD, you'll find music from 40 different classical composers; for the most part, the recordings excerpted here are some of the very best. Of course, you only get one Bach sampling (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) and one Mozart (A Little Night Music conducted by Herbert von Karajan), but this is still a nice collection--perhaps the starting point for a budding collection of classical music. This set's downfall? Unfortunately, though the liner notes discuss the evolution of classical music chronologically, the tracks are programmed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. This makes for some startling transitions! Emil Gilels's reflective performance of the Adagio from Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is followed by the crashing cymbals and bombast of Carmen's "March of the Toreadors," a recipe for a heart attack if there ever was one. Still, there's something here for everyone and the liner notes even explain what movies this music can be found in. A nice touch. --Jason Verlinde

Watch out for the volume leveling mentioned in another review. Surely the compliers could have come up with a better sort order than by composer. The change in tempo/volume between pieces makes it impossible to enjoy. My two CD's ended up in the trash.

Great Music Compilation.......2005-08-15

This is a great CD full of many songs that you will recognize and enjoy. If you are someone who likes classical music but doesn't necessarily know which songs or which composers you like, then this CD is for you. You will likely recognize many of the songs as the classical songs you would have picked out to be your favorites.

If you like classical music don't buy this CD........2005-03-11

Most of the tracks were chopped down to 3-4 minutes so some of the best parts of the compositions are missing. I don't know what I was thinking trying to buy 40 classical songs on two CD's. If you really want to enjoy the music you would do better to purchase a CD with fewer, but better quality tracks.

A must for anyone wanting the staples of classical music.......2005-02-23

In my years of experience teaching Fine Arts to high school students, I know that the majority, if not all, of the music included on this album is commonly used in collge music appreciation courses. This is an excellent sample of truly all the "greatest hits" of classical music. My students enjoy listening to the music and have later told me when take their required music apreciation courses in college that they "already know it all" because of this CD! The recordings are clear, the selections are passionate, and the listener will gain a familiarity with all of the most commonly heard classical music used in tv commercials, movies, etc.
I recommend this album, along with the boxed set, "Age of the Classics" for anyone who is interested in becoming familiar with the most famous staples of classical music.

A great compilation.......2005-02-09

This cd somes up some of the greatest pieces of instrumental (and is some cases choral) music ever written. It is a great starter for a beginning classical music lover or a quick and easy all-in-one for those of us who study classical music for a living. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who wants to love or already does love classical music.

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Tight G-Funk Melodies from Memphis Playas.......2006-04-28

EightBall & MJG came out with a certified banger in 1995 with On Top Of The World. These southerners bring the heat with nice pimpin' flows over smooth bass-heavy beats. Some of the beats approach a west coast, even better, a Bay area feel to them such as in "Top Of The World" with a vocoder in the hook. The beats throughout the album are fun and perfect to ride to. "Pimp In my Own Rhyme" is a little harder showing how they are on top of the pimp game and are in charge. "What Do You See" is a funky, melodic track, a perfect hood anthem. E-40 and Mac Mall appear in the track "Friend Or Foe," so you know that this south and west connection is comin' tight with each's unique flows. I love the beat in "For Real;" with whiny synths and a funky guitar riff, an immaculate combo in G-Funk. The dynamic duo talk about keepin' it real and shakin' the fakin' in the rap game and in life. This album will satisfy any west coast and southern rap fan. Really, any rap fan will find enjoyment in On Top Of The World.

8Ball & MJG's Dope Underground Album!.......2005-12-30

Memphis, TN's finest MC's 8Ball & MJG come hard on this 199Nickel track, I wish more southern hip hop artists were like these poetic spaceage pimps, who have this rapping sh*t down. They need to be more media oriented I think people will start to pay more attention to them. Pimp In My Own Rhyme is a tight g-funk classic, Funk Mission is another hit of theirs I like, Kick that Sh*t sounds like something of the Geto Boys or N.W.A. which is a tight song, how can I forget the horrorcore classic Hand Of the Devil!?

Tennesee Titan's best songs are *2, 3, 4, *5, *6, 7, *8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14 & 15.

Pimpin @ its finest!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-11-16

It's still classic. This album holds the test of time. I bought in 95, at Christmas, and its still hittin. For the first time, outside of Outkast, and the dungeon family, I have never heard some southern rap that doesn't have that typical southern sound. Eightball & MJG, make an album that is funked out with spritual lyrics, (that is not in ABC fashion or gettin' crunk), that really hits the listener. Track #2 the pimp anthem, "Pimp in my own Rhyme", has 8ball comin out hard and tellin these hoes just how it is.

Example: "F*ck being your boyfriend, girl I wanna hit dem boots/ jump deep in that rump/ and then I gotta fly B!tch/ you should've known how a real playa acts/ that's why I be/ about my P's/ and Q's/ cause hoes end up being bad news.

That is classic hotness!!!!

On the Afrocentric banger, "In the Line of Duty", MJG delivers fiyah like this:
"Everytime I breathes/ everytime I talks/ I'm always being heard/ or even being watched/ by scary @$$ white folks and crooked @$$ cops." That is a classic banger that deals with the police.

"What do you see" is another classic banger. 8ball once again delivers the extremely witty wordplay saying:
"Crews come 2's and 3's but they all 4's/enemies of me and MJG's tight flows".

As far as production. It's superior. It has a down-south pimp feel to it and no beat on there is wack, or sampled. Everything is original.

They also recive guest shots from E-40, Big MIke, Mac Mall, and others. This is also one of the first cd's I've ever bought that fills up 74 minutes, that is quality. Nowadays an album that long ain't quality, but this one is still timeless, and it still delivers, even after 10 years, but it was also made during the second golden age of hip-hop. That's just a few of the bangers that's on the album. This is also the cd with "Space Age Pimpin'". That song brought the duo more recongnition, and its probably when most people got hip to them.

All in all, if you want a southern rap album that has tight funked out southern beats, real flow about real life, this is it.

It's still superior, so please, please, if you can find it, go cop it!

Very Under-rated!!! .......2005-07-28

"On Top of the World" is a great example of why Ball & G are called the Kings of the south. Every track on this record is tight. The Beats are super clean as hell, fulla southern funk. And the lyrics are amazing as well, Ball & G spit like no other! It's too bad this album is often overlooked by many...they deserve a lot more respect than they get. Like I said, every track is sick, but my fav's would have 2 be "For Real", "All In My Mind", "Space Age Pimpin", "Top Of the World" and "Pimp in my own Rhyme". Check this out if u dont already got it!

Great album from Ball & G -- their best.......2004-11-05

The fat mac Eightball & the skinny pimp MJG deliver a classic album. This is my favorite out of all their group albums (I have 6 of them). All the songs are tight and you can listen straight through without skipping any. They are some of the south's finest (w/ Scarface, UGK, Devin the Dude, Lil Keke, Lil Flip, Big Mike, C-Murder, Young Buck, & Mr. Serv-On). There is no song on here I skip, it has 3 classics and a number of great songs. Southern rap isn't my favorite type of rap but I like some of it and this album is great and everyone should have a copy of it.

"El stinko," writes one Amazon.com customer, but to be fair to Rimes, her second album since the surprising debut Blue is more misguided than merely bad. She bites off more than she can chew, and producer Wilbur Rimes (LeAnn's father) tries to force-feed warmed-over Adult Contemporary arrangements and overheated pop fare ("Purple Rain" may be the silliest cover in "country" history), the kind neither Rimes nor the listener can easily swallow. Sittin' on Top of the World may be an advance from the truculent You Light Up My Life, but Rimes's talents are being squelched by the superstar machine. Excellent Album........2006-06-10

This is an excellent collection of a pop and country songs that just put you in a good mood. LeAnn Rimes voice is so clear and powerful that it will just blow you away. This album captures such an innocent sound and Leann sounds just like a sweet country girl. The tracks "Rock Me" and "Undeniable" are the albums strongest songs and LeAnn does an amazing performance of Prince's "Purple Rain". My opinion is that this is LeAnn Rimes strongest album and is a must for any fan of hers.

Nothin' New Under the Moon?.......2006-04-06

Well, you could say that this album belongs to LeAnn Rimes' best ones. There's a couple of hits: "Looking Through Your Eyes" (from the "Quest for Camelot" Motion Picture) and "Commitment". Then there's "Undeniable", it's a great song. After that the songs are so good, well LeAnn has a great voice, so that's one reason. Surely I could pick "These Arms of Mine", "Nothin' New Under the Moon", "Rock Me" and "Sittin' on Top of the World" but the truth is that this album is a great one but not her best work The last song "Purple Rain" which was originallyt made by Prince is one of the greatest moments in this album. You could say that quantity doesn't replace quality but this album has many great songs.

LeAnn's Best Album.......2005-07-03

I have 4 of Leann Rimes's albums(Blue,LeAnn Rimes,Unchained Melody & Sittin' on Top of The World).I can definitely say that this is by far her best album as it has a perfect balance of country & pop tunes.& her voice easily beats the likes of Celine and Mariah.This album should have at least been Grammy nominated but oh well.Finally,this is one album youcan NEVER get bored of.

This CD has a nice mix of combination of romantic and upbeat music. Have been listening to it everyday for past month and haven't gotten tired of it. "More than anyone deserves" is so sweet and the words to "Commitment" is so true.
I love her tone pitch in "Purple Rain"...her voice is amazing.

Album Description

Evelyn Ryan (Julianne Moore) is a devoted housewife and mother of ten in the 1950s. Her husband (Woody Harrelson) can't seem to make ends meet, but that doesn't stop the car from breaking down, the mortgage coming due and the bills from piling up. It falls to Evelyn to defy the conventions of the day and find a way to keep her family together with the odds stacked against them. Applying her remarkable resourcefulness and an uncommon wit, Evelyn finds her own way in the profitable jingle contests popular in the 1950s and'60s.

Composer John Frizzell adds his own sophisticated sound to the compositions and brings on two great musicians - Sara and Sean Watkins - to play fiddle and guitar. We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Pierce Brosnan may well be the most hyped James Bond since Sean Connery, but he's gratifyingly used his burgeoning Hollywood clout to midwife Evelyn, a warm, intimate portrait of an unemployed widower battling both the church and Irish government for the custody of his own children. Composer Stephen Endelman colors the film with a musical mix that leans on traditional Celtic folk touches (fiddle and pennywhistle), skillfully weaving them into an orchestral context that ranges from the gently pastoral to some emotionally detached minimalism. I had been counting down the days until this album came out, and wound up driving two hours to buy it -- but it was time and money well-spent.

The soundtrack to "Evelyn" is both touching and light-hearted, with Irish jigs, pub songs, and heart-wrenching orchestral tunes. Full of rich emotion, it's easy to comprehend the film's main themes, though the movie won't be released for many weeks yet.

The record opens with Van Morrison's jazzy 'Sitting on Top of the World', then segues into the theme from the opening credits. Orchestration takes over, filled with tin whistles, bodhrans, and violins, giving the album a gentle, yet painful, Irish feel. Desmond's pain at losing his children is evident throughout, though there are some joyous passages. And there is, of course, Pierce Brosnan's singing on two tracks, the fun 'On the Banks of the Roses' and the depressing 'The Parting Glass'.

Perhaps the most touching tunes are 'The Verdict', a deeply emotional yet uplifting instrumental, and Sissel's 'Angel Rays', a tear-jerking piece about strength and courage.

Overall, the album is one of the finest examples of Irish music that I've heard. Filled with touching, emotional, yet rough tunes, it will have you believing in the power of the human spirit.

Decent Quality, But a Little Rushed.......2002-09-20

I have to agree that this is a good collection of music for the money, especially if you are a novice at the Classics like me. Each disc covers a 40 year period with an hour of music and a little bit of history in the cover slip. However, there were some oddities that made me question the quality of this product. First, a few of the songs seemed like the conductor was hurrying them along so the songs on a disc would add up to exactly one hour -- where's the love? I know I'm a novice, but there are just some songs that are so famous that you can pretty easily tell when they are being butchered or compressed. Second, the quality of the product was suspect. Some of the discs looked like they were manufactured in 1990 and some in 1994. The older ones just had the titles on the discs and the newer ones had a screen-printed color change with no information. They couldn't even use the same type of Jewel Case throughout the collection. In total, it's good for beginners and the money, but not much else.

Not bad, but not a perfect as well. The music selection is very questionable for my taste. The performers are not always very suitable for specific masterpieces. It is inherently, just because such mix of names cannot be bad ;). If I will compose such set a lot of forgotten things should take their place.

Bought this CD to calm and relax myself after a hard days work. CD seems like a great collection to me. It's got a lot of songs that I recognize and some that I don't. It does sooth me a bit after the the many stresses of everyday life.

I'm not really a classical music nut like "Frasier Crane" so I'm not sure how much merit I can bring to the table with this review. But I think it's great..!!!
