Get over your Lombardo vs. Bostaph rants and recongnize that Bostaph is every bit as brutal and Slayer worthy as Lombardo. This album absolutely crushes. Tom's vocals are so high and forced, they finally sounds as tortured as the guitars behind him. This album is every bit as fast, heavy, sick and twisted as the albums before it, maybe even more so. I personally think it's better than Seasons and South, but to each his own. I can listen to this album from start to finish and never once be tempted to skip a track. Give this album a chance and you won't be disappointed. It's production is one of it's charms as well. It just sounds fuller, heavier, more stadium worthy. Slayer's thrashy punk roots really shine through, and the slower darker tracks contain some of the sickest imagery of the bands career.

Even though Dave was gone with this release, Slayer stayed strong. While it isn't as good as their first 5 albums, it is still worthy of 5 starts and amazing. This was the last Slayer album I bought, simply because I listened too everybody else too much. I figured if it was like Reign in Blood part 2, I wanted nothing to do with it. Simply because If I wanna listen to Reign in Bl0od then well, i'll listen to Reign in Blood. However, I don't really see it, this album stands as a strong but sadly over looked Slayer classic. Jeff and King seem like they may slow it down a little bit here, which at first was annoying, i'd be sitting listening to this album, grinding my teeth waiting for it to speed up (i.e. ss-3) Once I got over that though, it seems that the speed might have done more wrong than right for this album. Don't get me wrong, it is still quite fast. Vocal wise, this is up there with South of Heaven as one of Tom's best vocal performances. While dave is missed (welcome back!!!) Paul does a steady job of filling in, as he would for years. All in all, don't let the few nay sayers stop you from purchasing this album. It's Slayer, never dissapointed. Never anything less.

Killing Fields - 5/5 Talk about starting an album off with an anthem. This is one where I could only imagine how crazy the crowd is at a live show while this one is being played. The first 25 seconds can't even begin to prepare you for what happens next. To think, this is only the first song.

Sex. Murder. Art. - 5/5 A fast one and definetly a good one. A good opening riff leads into killer lyrics/vocals. I feel the drums slow it down a little too much in the start of things but after about 20 seconds, that is not a problem. Definetly a personal favorite of mine. Also a wonderful song name. Tom flows quite well with his vocals here. Should please any thrash maniac.

Fictional Reality - 5/5 Reminds me of a faster version of "Killing Fields" the main riff here, is one of the most memorable from this album. Probably Pauls best work is here. He really helps the flow of the song click well.

Dittohead - 4/5 The intro riff tells you one thing. "This song is going to be short and fast" which is pretty much what it is. One of the fastest here. Part of me thinks they tried to make it too slow and sped it up a bit too much and maybe should have added another 45 seconds or so to this one.

Divine Intervention - 5/5 A song that lets you take a small break. A bit long for the normal Slayer song, over 5 + minutes. Really sets the mood for the second half of the album. Not one to be missed. I love the dark almost depressing feel of the outro for this song.

Circle of Beliefs - 4.5/5 Right away, Tom starts belting it out with his vocals, I wish this song had more of an intro to it. Other than that I can't think of anything else wrong with this. It has one of the best solos on the album. It almost has a "distant" feel which gives it more atmosphere when a solo isn't being played.

SS-3 - 6/5 A song that took me some getting used to. When I did though, it became one of my favorites if not my favorite. The riffs here are the darkest you will find on this album. a song that w ill beat you jsut as hard as any other Slayer track but jsut doing it a bit slower. Enoguh to agonize.

Serenity in Murder - 4.5/5 The song name says it all, I don't think I need to say anything more. This is the type of asylum patient violence we've come to love from Slayer. only here, Tom does some really good singing, which could be called "Spooky" definetly adds something to the song. The guitars hold back here, that doesn't kill the song though.

213 - Definetly the song with the most atmosphere here. The string intro is just great. One of the best songs here. Not one to be passed over. The chorus is a bit choppy but other than that it is great.

Mind Control - 4.5/5 One of the fastest songs here. Can't go wrong with that. A good way to go out. Tom seems to put a little more venom into his vocals here. Great guitar solos as well.

So once again, you can never go wrong with Slayer. Enjoy.

Its sinful that such a great album doesnt have a 5 star average. This is quality thrash metal right here, with a slightly refined sound to it. All the songs have blistering solos, crazy as hell riffs, and of course, Paul Bostaphs inhuman drumming, which brings me to another a point. PAUL BOSTAPH IS JUST AS GOOD AS DAVE LOMBARDO YOU F-ING RETARDS!!!!!! GET IT THROUGH YOUR F-ING SKULLS.

Sorry, I had to get that out. But seriously, just listen to the crazy intro to Killing Fields, his crazy pummeling in Dittohead, and his double bass madness in SS-3. This is Slayer, quality Slayer, and all the b-chin needs to stop. Im betting about half of you who are trashing this album havent even listened to it, like the retards reviewing Trivium and Unearth. If your like those Sepultura and Anthrax fans who refuse to move out of the 80s and early 90s, than so be it. Your loss.

As for me, my favorite tracks are Killing Fields, SS-3, Mind Control, 213, and Dittohead.

If my review has convinced you to have a positive attitude about change, get Diabolus in Musica, this, and God Hates Us All. Also get some of Pauls work with Exodus, Forbidden, and Testament if you need further proof of his excellency.

The problem with Divine Intervention is timing. Had this album been released after Reign in Blood or even after South of Heaven, it would have been considered a masterpiece, one of Slayer's finest. But having been released in 1994, it has far too much of a "been there, done that" feel to it, making it difficult to pinpoint any standout tracks. However, with that said, Divine intervention is a very exciting, aggressive LP that IMHO is the album Seasons in The Abyss should have been. This is undoubtedly one of their fastest efforts, although it is not simply a case of "Reign in Blood Redux"; most of the lyrics (with heavy contributions from Tom Araya) deal with the theme of criminal pathology and the breakdown of society, being Slayer's first album with no reference to "Satan." Despite the somewhat rough production values (the band did this one themselves) the balance of strong musicianship, intelligent lyrics and a variety of tempos with a bias toward extreme speed makes this a nice introduction for newcomers to the band. Furthermore, whatever creative rut Slayer found themselves in with this album would be more than compensated for on their next effort, Diabolus in Musica. My personal favorites: Killing Fields, Fictional Reality, Dittohead and Serenity in Murder.

First things first.Lombardo is not on here.Bostaph is a very good drummer but he isn't the right drummer for slayer.That title belongs to Lombardo and him only.Now to the review.This a good album and now a bit overlooked and forgotten.It still has some slamming songs but this is the last Slayer I usually reach for.To their credit the sound is actually heavier than ever but the songs are just not the classics of the previous three.This still belongs in any Slayer collection.This is Slayer in transition.A new drummer and new decade and now competing with the death metal movement.The best song is the title track.

The premise of Divine Intervention is as follows: Steven Halpern performs 10 piano improvisations (plus an eight-minute piece for electronic keyboards, the disc-closing "Rest in the Light") in the presence of Starr Fuentes, a woman identified in the liner notes as a "healer and master teacher" and a "Bishop of 64 Divine Intervention congregations." As Halpern plays, Fuentes's contribution is "anchoring and transmitting multidimensional energy fields." What is the result of all this focused energy? Nothing quite as revelatory as the recording's title might suggest. The disc opens on a promising note, with a gentle, sweetly melodic charmer simply titled "Opening Theme." What follows thereafter is more formal-sounding, serious-minded music, as if Halpern is searching the piano's lower ranges for notes suitable for the ostensible profundity of the occasion. After pretty much inventing and pioneering death metal in the early '80s, Slayer spent years playing as fast and with as much intensity as they could muster. But after 1986's pinnacle of death, Reign in Blood, the band decided to explore the slower side of intense volume, so it tempered the tempos and indulged in a darker, more atmospheric sound. But with 1994's Divine Intervention, the band proved it could still race to the finish line. Somewhat messier than much of their earlier output, the record makes up in brutality whatever it lacks in precision. If "Killing Fields," "Circle of Belief," and "Sex, Murder, Art" quicken the pulse, the hardcore velocity-fest "Dittohead" will cause the heart to explode in showers of Divine gore. It's Slayer !!!!.......2006-01-25

Released in 1994 after 4 years and a change in their drummer, this album really was a turning point for Slayer. Not once is the word Satan mentioned in any of these songs ! When I first heard the album, I was a little disapointed (we waited 4 years), but it was still Slayer. The album starts with this cascade of drums and rips right into Killing Fields, which is an excellent song. Right away you can hear the difference in their sound...but is it for the better ?! Seasons in the Abyss had such a crystal clear sound and Divine Intervention just does not sound up to par when compared to the Seasons. That being said, this is a great metal album that is overlooked by many. I must say that I do enjoy this album much more than their most recent material and would recommend it to all. Feeling compelled late at night to offer forth my two cents worth, since for some horrible reason there isn't a review of this record (maybe infamy is enough), so... After four years between studio offerings, the spawns of hell return unabated, ferocious and blood hungry as ever. By no means a bad thing, this is a typical Slayer album full of all those 120db subtleties and nuances that we've all come to know and love. No sh*t, the power and aggression of these guys is incredible, and when all those metal mainstays are busy writing sh*tty records and making themselves look like a bad U2 joke as they age (Metallica: just sell what little soul you kept and get it over with, thanks for scamming us with that "load" of sh*te), these guys beat you over the head with some of their heaviest production and songs that slide nicely into the catalogue like they were always there. Almost hard to believe they're on a major label. Ten years later I still spin this disk on a regular basis, it's seminility only challenged by that breathtaking "in the nightside eclipse" album those Emperor boys put out that same fateful year. What more is there to say? Anyone remotely interested in what metal is supposed to be (as in not written to sell records, for example) NEEDS this disk, since it does a pretty damn good job of actualizing my definition. One of the few old bands left in the genre that still deserve the "metal" moniker (thanks for "youthanising" your band, Dave). Light a doob, grab a shot and watch the sky turn red, fellow hellions. This is why you call yourselves metalheads, and this is what your parents warned you about. Now go. You have commerce to perform.

This alblum represents a new level of Dementia. If you could pick an alblum -and band- to represent heavy-metal in a permanate archive, This is it! Very literate band. Divine Intervention is a turning point for Slayer. From young chasers of evil spirits, These men may have become Evil in the time leading up to this CD.Musicaly tight and drivin by a new drummer they do a clinic on hard core and the EXPLICID LYRICS on this one are so forward you live each scene they paint in your head. Yeah, it's good but different.......2007-04-17

They chose 9 great songs (and an "inspired by Slayer" original composition), highlighting completely different styles that Slayer has gone through over the years, from Die by the Sword (perhaps the worst song on this album, but at least as good as the original) to Dead Skin Mask (as disturbing and enjoyable as the original). The new song, inspired by Slayer, would actually probably be a great song to hear be performed by the band (Amazon lists it as "Windless Death" and "Mindless Death", it is actually the latter).

Some of the tracks do not work out so well, okay, they are bad (postmortem, south of heaven, die by the sword), but the album is well worth having anyways: the stuff is eery and lends itself extremely well to bowed string playing. Expendable Youth and War Ensemble sound absolutely creepy, though some of the tempo changes that sound great on guitar leave you kind of wanting them to change the song around to fit a more classical sounding composition.

This is what Dracula would have been bumping back in the 1500s if he had a CD player.

As a Slayer fan seeing this CD for the first time, my first thought was that this was a long overdue idea. I wondered at the trouble of translating the sometimes repetitive nature of metal riffing to bowed strings, but otherwise it seems a rather natural transition. So, with much excitement I purchased it and slapped it into my CD player at the first opportunity. This excitement quickly changed to puzzlement as I listened to what turned out to be an unsatisfying realization of the idea.

There are ten tracks on this CD, all but one being surprisingly faithful covers of the Slayer versions (the one original composition being very much in the style of Slayer). While every rendition had its moments that worked just right, the rest of the time it seemed confused, lost and simply not going anywhere. Not to mention sometimes slightly out-of-tune (I suppose what works with a pair of heavily distorted guitars doesn't necessarily work with four acoustic stringed instruments). Frankly, the repetitious metal riffage during the verse parts turned out to be just as much of a problem that I suspected they might be. This was not at all helped by the violin following Araya's vocal lines. Altogether, it left me wishing they had done a bit more rearranging, perhaps cutting the number of verse repetitions.

There were a few standouts, the foremost being "Die By the Sword", which somehow worked all the way through better than any of the others. Other notable tracks include "Mindless Death" (the original composition) and "Mandatory Suicide". I had high hopes for "Dead Skin Mask", as well, but that one didn't quite work as well - probably in part due to the lightly distorted electric cello, which seemed out of place amongst the more natural sounding instruments.

All in all, it seemed an honest, but underdeveloped effort. Perhaps with a bit of arranging or with a group larger than a quartet, this would have been perfect. As it is, I must admit that I will be listening to it again. Maybe as I listen to it longer I'll warm up to it. As it stands, I agree with the previous reviewer in that it is probably a must for any die-hard Slayer fan, but don't expect perfection.

Fantastic Music For SF/F fans.......2004-12-30

Filk Music is a fiction reader's dream. Music based on books, popular culture and most of all science fiction and fantasy. Ecklar is the cream of the crop. Divine Invention has some great songs. Crane Dance, (based on Karate Kid), Crimson and Crystal and Terminus Est. These are great tunes guaranteed to inspire you and to thrill your imagination. I only hope she produces more CD's! And quickly. Oh, and Ecklar's voice is quite a joy to listen to! A MUST for science fiction fans!

Wonderful music, marvellous voice, splendid lyrics -- all in all, a terrific album, both a grand introduction for anyone not familiar with filk music and an equally grand listen for those acquainted with it. The instrumentation appeals to more mainstream listeners, but the quality here is anything but ordinary. If nothing else, certainly take a listen -- this is amazing stuff!

I love this album for Julia Ecklar's beautiful voice, her lyrical melodies, and her imaginative lyrics. Her songs have a depth and range of emotion that I rarely find elsewhere. Many of the songs are based on works of fiction, from "Cyrano de Bergerac" to "Star Trek".

The recently released CD, "Divine Intervention," is a powerful collection of gospel tunes that are highly spiritual, uplifting and inspirational. Marsha Bullock is destined to be one of our truly great singers, who, by the way, was told once that she would never talk. The song "Brighter Day" (which, I believe, has crossover appeal) alone should be a part of anyone's gospel CD collection, because it really is that good! This song exemplifies her exuberant and joyful lyrical style that synchronizes beautifully with her background singers and has the potential to uplift and inspire listeners of any genre.

Congratulations to Ouibill Records for producing Marsha Bullocks first gospel CD. Without question, I rate it a solid five.

From beginning to end this compilation of songs flow evenly from one to the other. The infectious rhymic stylings flow flawlessly between the rough lyrics to the tight tracks. This CD is evenly distributed amongst all possible listeners ranging from the solid headbangers like "Spittin" for the true Hip Hop Heads to the party minded individuals on tracks like "Fame". Black Tongue also comes with a blend of conciousness as well with tracks like "Cherish Your Breath". Black Tongue brings you the true Baltimore Hip Hop seasoning. You should know that this is the second release to their initial CD called "Preamble to the Game". If I was the Source Mag, I would give this CD 5 Mics.
